Rabbinic Judaism Debunked: Debunking the myth of Rabbinic Oral Law

Rate this book
"This book provides a critical survey of Judaism, making it an excellent introduction for anyone interested in learning about the Jewish faith from a critical perspective!"

The central aim of this book is to argue that the God of Israel did not give Moses the traditions of the Orthodox Rabbis, known as the "Oral Law" or "Oral Torah." Jewish tradition claims that the Oral Law, which includes rabbinic laws and statutes, was handed to Moses alongside the Pentateuch. However, drawing from biblical scholarship, history, and archaeology, this book demonstrates that it is unreasonable to believe God gave Moses a concealed Oral Law at Mount Sinai—one that only Rabbis can interpret, thus making the people of Israel dependent on them to connect with God.

This book defines Judaism, explores its origins, and critically examines rabbinic arguments for the Oral Law. It also offers evidence to show that the Oral Law is untenable biblically, historically, and logically while revealing its true sources and intentions based on Jewish scholarly research.

Rabbinic Judaism relies entirely on the claim that God provided an additional, oral body of law. Refuting this claim undermines its foundational premise. As one Jewish professor admitted, “There is no greater threat to Rabbinic Judaism than the refutation of the Oral Law as handed down to Moses at Sinai.”

We wish to clarify three key points:

First, this book explores challenging issues but is fully supported by academic research. Drawing on studies from Israeli scholars, it presents rigorous arguments while remaining accessible to non-academic readers.

Second, we deeply respect the Jewish people (of which we are a part) and their dedication to preserving God’s Word and identity throughout the diaspora. However, we lament that traditions rooted in the Oral Law have led to a version of Judaism that diverges from the Hebrew Bible and the God of Israel.

Third, this critique is an internal discussion between Jews who believe in Yeshua (Jesus) and those who do not. It is not an attack on the Jewish people but a call for dialogue grounded in biblical and historical truth.

Messianic Jews, who are a tiny minority in Israel, have some major challenges on their hands. For one thing, a typical reaction to their message from an Israeli Jew might be, "We have a tradition going all the way back to Moses. Why should we listen to you?"

This book, written by two Israeli Messianic Jews, examines the claim that rabbinic tradition is rooted in an oral Torah first given to Moses at Mount Sinai. I think the authors get a number of things right, including that (1)there is no evidence for such a claim in scripture or history; (2) rabbinic tradition is often valued above Scripture in Jewish circles; (3) rabbinic tradition is not inerrant and sometimes contradicts Scripture.

On the other hand, I think some of the book's critiques are not well founded. The authors imply that there is some moral problem with the rabbis structuring their movement like a Greek philosophical school and using Hellenistic teaching methods. They wrongly characterize liturgical prayers as some kind of "vain repetitions," and they make some false charges of paganism.

The main problem I see with this book, however, is its unrelentingly negative, accusatory tone. No "love of enemies" is evident here, and there is no admission that there is value in any rabbinic teaching, or that some rabbi may have had a motive that wasn't ulterior. Because the book is so one-sided and not always accurate, I cannot recommend it. For a balanced approach to the subject of the book, I recommend Volume 5 of Michael L. Brown's Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus.

Rabbinic Judaism Debunked by Eitan Bar

This is a polemical book written by a Christian Jew. The gist of the argument is that Judaism is impeached by the Rabbinical Jewish doctrine of the Oral Torah.

The oral Torah is the set of unwritten law purportedly given by God to Moses at Sinai. The oral Torah supplements the written Torah. The oral Torah provided the basis for the Mishnah upon which the Talmud was a commentary.

I don't think non-Jews (or American reformed Jews) understand the role that the oral Torah plays in orthodox Judaism. For my part, I was surprised to find that most of the well-known rules are found in the Mishnah and not in the written Torah. The oral Torah, Mishnah and Talmud are not accepted by all Jews, including the Karaites and Reformed Jews.

Bar's argument is use the Talmud to highlight the importance of the Talmud to Orthodox Judaism. Bar supports his argument with quotations from the Talmud. Some of the quotes are eyebrow-raising, including some that suggest that the Rabbis get to tell God how the laws are to be interpreted. Since this is a polemical work, I suspect the quotes are in the text but that these quotes may be susceptible of a more charitable interpretation. Chalk this book up as an interesting survey of a maximalist interpretation of the influence of the Talmud.

This book is excellent, well researched, easy to read and understand and respectfully proves that the Oral Law of Rabbinic Judaism is not Scriptural but is man made. I was raised a Catholic also and was amazed in reading this how similar the rules, dogma, liturgy and traditions of the Catholic Church are as man made, non scriptural, pagan but used to produce a theory and worship actually more disrespectful to the GOD who communicated with us in his Wriiten Word as is Rabbinic Judaism. I encourage all Jews and Christians to read this book and share it with fellow believers. For me, so much of the confusion I discovered in reading even the opinions written in the Jewish Bible ( why opinions are there I do not know ) and reading in the Mishna and Jewish commentaries now make sense.....they are of man....not God. I look forward to reading Eitan Bar's new book , and I pray the veil covering the eyes of so many Jews emersed only in the Rabbi's oral tradition and control be removed and they come to know Jeshua our Jewish Messish and Lord.

Provides Answers I Have Been Looking For!!

The authors do a fantastic job of answering questions I have had since first hearing of the "Oral Law" several years ago. After reading "Rabbinic Judaism Debunked" many pieces of the puzzle I have been searching for are quickly coming together. I would like to see the authors do a follow up book on how the church in America has followed the example of the Rabbis by teaching mainly from commentaries and books, rather than from the Scriptures. In doing this, the church has also substituted the doctrines and traditions of men for the Scriptures - the written Word of God. And, although the "Noahide Laws" are not mentioned in the book, the authors have helped me to better understand the significance of our government's public endorsement of them. This short book is 5 stars all the way!!

I’ve just finished the first chapter and I did not even want to stop reading but I am compelled to write about what I think will be an excellent read and will give insight into Yeshua from a more intimate perspective! I am so excited to continue reading, learning about Jesus in a way that I have never read before. This book explains who Jesus, or Yeshua, is from the vantage of someone who understands the language, culture and heritage of the land of Israel in a way that makes sense to the very people of Israel. Thank you for sharing the “secret” of the Yeshua of Israel! I am so excited to continue reading!

Most christians will undoubtedly not take this review seriously because of confirmation bias, but for those with an open mind: here goes.
It becomes clear from the beginning that the people who wrote this book are not very familiar with the sources or practices of rabbinic Judaism, or their scholarly interpretations.
Many concepts are confused, such as halakha and agadah. The portions of the Talmud dealing with the Law and those that are homiletical.

The Talmud and Midrashim will often give us homiletical accounts of historical events in order to make a point. That does not mean that they are meant to be taken literally or that they were taken literally for the vast majority of post second Temple period Judaism. Nor does it mean that these are the main defense for the concept of the Oral Law. The main sources for the acceptance of the Oral Law are sadly not discussed or only mentioned haphazardly. The book is often reminiscent of how the new-atheist crowd argues against God by presenting only the most unsophisticated theological positions or by creating a straw man argument. This may fool the average layman with poor command of the sources, but not rabbinic scholars.

An example is how they often attack the so-called 'kabbalah' in order to bring down rabbinic Judaism. What is called 'kabbalah' today is indeed heavily influenced by pagan sources, such as the Catholic Church and second Temple period Gnosticism. The catch is however, that this so-called 'kabbalah' has only been widely accepted for the last few hundred years in the ultra-orthodox world and is still vehemently opposed by many rationally minded rabbis. Books such as the Zohar were not thought of as belonging to the corpus Oral Torah throughout Jewish history (Maimonides doesn't mention them is his magnum opus 'Mishne Torah' as a valid source of Oral Law). Presenting them as such is very misleading, just like the cover of the book. The cover shows a 'hamsa' symbol which is a pagan symbol from Islamic societies. It has gained some popularity among superstitious, uneducated Jews from the Middle East, but definitely does NOT represent authentic rabbinic Judaism.

Third, the book has a constant accusatory tone against the Rabbis which is completely unfounded. Sacred Jewish prayer is referred to as 'mindless repetition' merely because the authors don't think it has value. The authors seem unable to accept that the Rabbis instituted certain practices with pure intentions, rather they assume they must have done so in order to deceive the people.

Lastly, the contents of this book are hardly an objective, scholarly evaluation of rabbinic Judaism, but rather a clearly motivated attack by the Christian authors. For an objective overview of rabbinic Law and thought look elsewhere.

Another Dynamic Book

This book should be read by every Jewish person as well as Christians . If Jeshua is not the Messiah why are the rabbis so afraid to let the people read for themselves what the New Testament says ? When I wanted to know for certain that Yeshua was and is the Son of God and Messiah I asked God to show me . I'm truly amazed at how the Bible opened up to me and I found so many things that point to Yeshua . The New Testament is interwoven into the Tanakh like a beautiful tapestry and if I studied the Bible for the next thousand years I would still not know all of it's wonders . What I know absolutely and for sure is that God is very very real as is his Son Yeshua our Savior !

AS a new Messianic Gentile Believer in Yeshua, I found this book quite eye-opening concerning the Rabbinic Judaism and the oral law.

THIS book is a very good source of understanding the origin and development of Rabbinic Judaism and the Oral Law.

IT is very well written and the author has given good references for all his claims.

I recommend this book to all new Messianic, Jews and all who are interested in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as well as those who profess Yeshua as the promised Messiah.

I AM grateful to have found this book. Thank you Eitan Bar and Golan Broshi.

An excellent research work and argument

I wanted to learn more about the subject, and found this to be a great introduction to the differences between biblical and rabbinic Judaism, and the concerns with the departure from biblical Judaism and lack of acknowledgement of the Messiah. It is an eye-opening work, presenting good evidence, citations and asks some tough questions. Recommended reading for anyone with any level of curiosity. This book led me to further study, investigation and insight as I came across new ideas and evidence I was previously unaware of.

Good content that could use some polishing

At the very end of the book in conclusion you will find out that this was written as a "paper". That's why you have a feeling like you are reading someones ppt presentation. Everything is in bullet points with not much "meat" connecting the issues discussed. I'm no expert in Judaism or its history, but it seems as a well written overview of the many of the modern day Judaism or even better, rabbinic Judaism fallouts from true biblical jewish tradition well supported in many footnotes with comments.

Good for what it is

This is just a long paper, and as such would be far too pricey if I hadn't had a $3 Kindle credit. But very good for what it is, and well documented though. It can be a nice surprise when someone keeps it short, but this particular topic could have used twice as long of treatment. I'm glad I have some full length books to read besides this. Appreciate Eitan Bar though, and have read several of his works now.

Rare to stunning truth on the Judaism practiced since the destruction of the Second Temple. My seminary was highly interactive with Jewish Studies, and I was still ignorant of many of the things Bar and Brosh presented in this quick read.

Not a thorough treatment though; apparently, it was originally a paper.

Concise and informative

I was impressed with the professional integrity the author demonstrated by not resorting to name-bashing or demoralizing specific people or people. Instead, he gave a clear and condensed presentation on the dangers of the Oral Law on authentic Judaism as handed down by God through Moshe and Yeshua. Well done!

This book was quick and to the point explaining the Jewish faith of today with what it had been originally over 2,000 years ago. It was eye opening to see that the Jews basically don’t follow the Word of God anymore but the Oral Law that rabbis put in place of it. Great information!

The statements made in this little book may be shocking, but what counts is: Are they factual? The numerous references by the text show that thorough investigations have been made by the authors. A must read for everyone who is searching for truth.

I highly recommend it

Written in several small chapters, it is very easy to read, it is very well documented and it does not fail to show His great love for the Jewish people, whom, being a Christian, I also love and pray for them. God bless Eitan and Golán!

i never thought about the consequences of the destruction of the temple by the romans. now the priest class have no temple and no purpose. romans dispersed the jews to discourage another rebellion. taking over the dispersed communities were the rabbis. rabbis who like to spend all day arguing over any little point and pretending to be scholars. i have wondered where kabbalah teachings came from since it seems pagan and superstition based like astrology and numerology. the answer is: when tradition is thrown away some rabbi will try to gain respect by talking about secret teachings and a special path to god.

Rabbinic Judaism Debunked
by Dr. Eitan Bar and Dr. Golan Brosh

published by ONE FOR ISRAEL Ministry, 2019
(deutsche Übersetzung folgt)

This book with the provocative title, which is now available at Amazon, may initially shock the reader. However, it is consistently factual and written without false polemics, and its critical remarks should be taken very seriously. It is by no means a fundamental attack on the Jewish faith as such, quite the opposite. It wants to expose and defend the original Jewish faith based on biblical revelation. After long internal struggles and deep, careful studies, it is an intra-Jewish contribution for discussion of the Bible and its authority on the one hand and the rabbinical teachings regarding the oral tradition of the rabbis on the other hand, which the rabbis call the "Oral Law" handed down in Mishna and Talmud, and which as they say have been given by God himself on Mount Sinai to Moses, with everything which was inferred by the rabbis from their rabbinic tradition. This book is warmly recommended to anyone who wants to better understand the difficult and sometimes painful dialogue between Jews and Christians and the massive rejection of Jesus by the rabbinic leaders as it is until today. Unfortunately, this book has only been published in English so far.

Rabbinic Judaism Debunked
(übersetzt: Das Rabbinische Judentum entlarved)
ein Buch von Dr. Eitan Bar und Dr. Golan Brosh

erschienen im Verlag ONE FOR ISRAEL Ministry, 2019

A book well worth reading which sets out a very strong case that modern Judaism depends very little upon the Jewish Scriptures of Law, Prophets and the Writings but rather upon development of the traditions of the Pharisees. This aided by the destruction of the Second Temple and the ending of worship according to the Scriptures such as the sacrificial system which left the Pharisees as the party best able to seize leadership of Judaism who then developed their traditions into the concept of an 'Oral Law' reputed given along side the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai.

It's a short book easily read in a few hours.
