Johanna Spyri was a Swiss author of children's stories, best known for Heidi. Born Johanna Louise Heusser in the rural area of Hirzel, Switzerland, as a child she spent several summers in the area around Chur in Graubünden, the setting she later would use in her novels.
Read Heidi for Gr. 1 read aloud. My 6yo loved it and I appreciated anew the author's spiritual insights and characters. Some of the chapters were a bit long to read in one sitting but we managed just fine. As for Hans Brinker, I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would! I remembered very little of the story but it has all the pleasing parts of a good fairytale but told in a real world place. There was more history and geography about Holland woven in than I expected but it was balanced well with the story. Truly enjoyable stories!
Heidi - 3 stars - a lovely little story that I enjoyed reading Hans Brinker - 2 stars - just too much stuff that wasn’t directly related to the Brinkers’ story, which was what I was really interested in. It made the book feel like a bit of a slog, though I do appreciate the attempts to impart some Dutch history.
Loved reading this with my daughters. What a wholesome story. We had such great conversation starters with this one. We loved giggling about Rottenmeir and the cats. We loved daisy and dusky and snowflake. We heard how prayer and faith can change hearts and move mountains and even recognized the story of the prodigal son being retold. We loved the true sweet friendship of Heidi and Clara!
I only read Hans Brinker this time around. My favorite part was when the father was cured. My least favorite part was when the money was almost lost to them for good because they looked under the wrong tree and then gave up.
