Psychologist Richard Brandon's recurring visions of a fantasy realm called Midland leads to forays into alternate worlds, in which four of his alter egos are enlisted by wizards in a struggle against evil. Original.
A tainted fantasy, conjuring up memories of your best dreams contaminated by ugly reality. It’s a strange atmosphere, but it works. The story doesn’t really get started until midway through. Once the four versions of the same man actually start the journey, things happen, parallels and connections become clear, and then it gets interesting. Have patience, get past the first half, and it all makes sense in the end. The ending is obvious given all the clues throughout the book, but I never saw it coming. Not an expertly-crafted story, but it's satisfying in the end.
This is an interesting fantasy with six main characters, five of whom are apparently the same one. It doesn't quite all tie together as well as it might, but it's a fun, thought-provoking story.
This was the first fantasy novel I ever read from cover to cover, and a favorite at the time. A complicated, yet at the same time easy smooth and fun read.
