"What in the world is happening in the Soul Society?"
That's a question everyone's seeking the answer to, because things starts to become intense. Half a year had passed after the defeat of Yhwach and his Sternritters, but it looks like the world of BLEACH just cannot catch a break. With Can't Fear Your Own World a new threat appeared in the form of a Soul Reaper named Tokinada Tsuyanashiro and his companion, a mysterious child named Hikone Ubuginu. Now the characters from both good side and bad side that we had either fallen in love or feeling a deep dislike (or hatred) to, need to gather together and stop Tokinada before the world everyone know will change forever.
To be honest, I struggled with part one of this book. For two reasons. Reason no. 1: the writing style. I ignored this issue in book one because this kind of style had (at least some kind of) sense back then. It was the first book after all. The author had to introduce the reader to the world of BLEACH and to the characters. But with Vol. 2 that kind of writing stopped being necessary and became quite irritating. The reader didn't need to be introduced to the characters they already knew and didn't need to be reminded of the events that took place in the previous book. No one's memory is that short. Second reason was the fact that not much had happened through the first part of the book. The characters just kept on standing and talking about things that I already knew or, in the villain's case, kept on either provoking people or declaring how much they would like to kill. It tired me out pretty quickly.
Part two of the book is the one where things finally started to become interesting. Some truths got revealed, not only about the villain's plan, but about BLEACH's world in general, which as much as I welcomed with open arms (I craved for all the informations considering how many questions I still have after finishing the main story), not every case made me happy. Considering the villain's plan, the name of Reio shows up through the story pretty often and we get to see the dark truth behind the god's existence.
Anyways, the storyline of Can't Fear Your Own World Vol. 2 focuses on the Fullbringers and I have to say that I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this fact. It's not a mystery that I haven't been a fan of these characters, especially not the two that had manipulated my poor boy Ichigo so wickedly in the Lost Agent arc. Yes, they got a little bit of redemption in TYBW, but I was convinced that it's not enough for me to care. I ended up realizing how wrong I was about my feelings when the Fullbringers became the main target of the both the good side and the bad side of the story. I realized that I didn't want either of them to be captured and to be hurt in any way and I started to bite my nails in fear of what was coming for them.
"Every so often when it does speak, all it says is disturbed stuff like, 'Give me blood,' or 'Offer your life.' I know it's not fundamentally a bad guy, but honestly I have some reservations. I'm worried that if I understand it completely... that maybe I'll end up tainted up by it." "Are you scared?" "I can't say I'm not."
Hisagi who's supposed to be the main character of CFYOW as a whole, despite being present, didn't really do much here, and, while I wasn't worried about this through book one, book two made me quite anxious. I love Hisagi and I was happy that he got to be on the spotlight, because I thought that he had a ton of potential as a character, but uh, what was that? He's not an active character in any way. He spend the time mostly talking with various characters. There was some fighting involved, true, but it felt insignificant, considering that the villain's focus was put on Urahara. Hisagi was just... there, you know? He was just there through Vol. 1 and he was just there through Vol. 2. It need to change ASAP, because Hisagi truly deserves to be on spotlight. Give him something interesting to do and show me his Bankai!! He's the MC so let him be the MC! 🤧 Anyways, what I like about Hisagi's presence in the book is the little light that had been put on his relationship with Kazeshini, his Zanpakuto. I hope to get more of it, but we will see how things will look like.
"Lord Tokinada said, 'You are the beginning and the end, so you need no reproductive function, or gender, or development. That is the way you were made.'" [Hikone]
Tokinada wasn't as much present through Vol. 2 like he was in the previous book. We get to see more of his childlike companion, Hikone Ubuginu, instead. The book revealed the mystery behind their character and, to be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about it. While I felt Yhwach being overpowered and people say that Ichigo is overpowered (considering his genes), both of them blend in comparison to Hikone. She's the OP of the storyline. Their arsenal has everything you might think of. While all Ichigo had were the various genes, but barely used them, Hikone has no reservations and uses those genes in the full extent. I wonder what else are they capable of (and if I should be worrying about all of my favorite characters' safety).
I'll have to admit that the whole case with her Zanpakuto, Ikomikidomoe, shocked me. I'm baffled how was it even made! Why did Oh-Etsu create it the way he did, especially considering the fact that there are only three people who could use it? I don't understand it at all, I'm worried, but also very curious, I hope to find more about it in the next book.
Though he was a member of that clan, the boy looked down upon his own family. He looked down on his own family as it continued to indulge in pretentious luxury and as it frivolously squandered a history built up through time and complacency. They were evil - simply despicable.
Now, Tokinada. Despite not being as much in the story like in the previous book, he's there and he's doing exactly what you would expect of him after reading Vol. 1. His 'wicked' smiles are still present in every scene he shows up on and he keeps on provoking people and talking about killing, because he's evil. In fact, he's always been evil, since he was a child. His whole clan was made of evil people, but he's the greatest of them all. He's the head of the family now and has the resources and knowledge that no one else before him had. He's free to do whatever he wants which is to change the world and make a playground out of it for him to use as he pleases. My feelings about him are quite mixed. Part of me is happy that there is a villain that's fully a bad person. You know, that he's not someone who had some traumatic past that made him evil. He's just evil for the sake of being evil, that's it. What's irritating about him is the fact that he's supposed to be the no. 2 greatest villain of BLEACH (or so I heard), but all he had done through the story so far was declaring how evil he is and going through one convenience after another, picking up things that someone else had created and blending them together. What a mastermind.
There is also the whole thing with the new XCution and its leader, Aura Michibane. I'm not sure how I feel about her yet. I like her backstory with her parents loving each other so much, it reminded me a little of Megumi's parents storyline from Jujutsu Kaisen. But I don't understand Aura's motives. Because she doesn't feel any bond with any person nor object, and because her reasons to follow Tokinada were unclear, it's hard for me to understand her and care about her. Maybe it will change in the final book. I also don't get how Yukio benefits from being in alliance with Aura. I hope that it will be explained later on.
Anyways, the best thing about CFYOW Vol. 2 and its villain is the fact that they brought everyone together. And by everyone I do not mean the main BLEACH gang (who are out of Karakura Town, right now of all times!), but the Soul Reapers, the Quincies, the Fullbringers and the Arrancars together. Everyone who were Ichigo Kurosaki's enemies through the main BLEACH storyline had to become allies to defeat their common enemy. Ichigo's not present to see this, but I am, as the reader, and I like it very, very much! (yes, I don't even mind that the Quincies are there, not anymore) I squealed like a teenager (that I no longer am, unfortunately) when I saw everyone together in one place (in the Shiba residence! THE SHIBA RESIDENCE!)! It's like a dream come true for me! I NEED MORE, PLEASE! By more, I mean more characters, more action and more information! Please and thank you!
"In that case... it's almost time for a miracle. I'm going to turn things around." [Shinji]
I'm so excited to read book three, considering how things ended up in Vol. 2. We got some incredibly interesting informations about Reio's fragments through the whole story, but on the end?? I already heard about some things (due to me being active on social media), but, to be honest, some things sounded quite heard to believe. I certainly believe in them now! There were some heartbreaking truths (like Gremmy's case and the behind the scenes of Mayuri's experiments on the Quincies), but also surprising (like the Matsumoto one). There were also some names mentioned that I don't recall hearing before (who was the seventh Kenpachi?! What did Tousen wish for?!) and I'm hoping to find more about. I wonder how the final battle will look like!
P.S. what was up with this "trip" that Ichigo and his friends went for?? Urahara talked about it briefly, but then he also mentioned that Ichigo's sisters were in danger that's why Ichigo and Isshin went after them? I'm so confused?? I mean, I understand that it was an arrangement of the villain to keep Ichigo away from the Karakura Town, but I don't know if I should be worried about Ichigo and his friends or not 😭
P.P.S. LET DORDONI AND GRIMMJOW MEET WITH ICHIGO, DAMMIT! HALF A YEAR HAD PASSED ALREADY, HOW LONG ARE THEY SUPPOSE TO WAIT?! 😭
I feel as though I read 400+ pages but the story went nowhere.
Positives: It's quick to read and I got to see some of my favourite characters, happy to see Aizen again even if it was a short flashback story.
You learn a little bit more about the world...
Negatives: sooo many things to list!! But I will list the main issues in my opinion.
1. How can many events happen but at the same time nothing happen at all??! This happened a lot throughout the book. I believe the story could have been cut down greatly, there were moments that I thought were useless/pointless. I read 400+ pages and the characters went nowhere, expect towards the end where there was actual progression. But this is a let down, as you know there is only a few pages left until the end of the book - so the payoff doesn't exist, you don't feel satisfied. It just leaves you on another cliff hanger the same as Vol 1.
2. And that leads me to the cliff hangers..... Soo many cliff hangers. Want to see Hisagi's bankai!?... Yeah not today, we will build up the suspense - Hisagi is in a tight spot his only option is bankai - Yeah nope, we gonna use some other character that pops in out of nowhere, even though we say Hisagi is a reallllllly strong soul reaper.
You want to know why the soul king is such a sin??...We are going to keep mentioning he is a sin but not tell you why - not even at the end of the volume, you got to wait until book 3 ;)
Aizen tells Tosen why he wants to sit at the top, why he wants to replace the soul king... But we won't tell you what that is ;)
The book is like watching a long episode of bold and the beautiful.
3. The mention of characters who weren't even the supporting cast. If you watched the anime or read the manga, there are some characters mentioned in the novel that had appeared in the main series at most once or twice tops. I don't see the point of adding them into this novel and I think it could have been cut down greatly if they removed those scenes with these characters who aren't even supporting cast members.
Did I enjoy it? a little; I was mainly in it for the Arrancars and Aizen. I just hope the third volume answers more questions, fills in the blanks and has a better payoff.
Dear lord I started to read this book in June and finished in freaking October, it is so bloated, maybe it worked better in japanese yet here it doesn't work well. For example you get a dialogue where two characters go at it and we can see that they hate each other yet the author then tells us man those two hate each other. NO SHIT! so many scenes are shown to us and later told us what they mean again because...........reasons?! Considering the large number of pages yet barely anything happens, so much ass kissing for Urahara yet all he really made were some observations and off screne investigations, that does not make him a genius, it just makes the rest worse.
We get some hints about Yoruichi's sword, Hisagi is going to do something, eventually, we also get a hint about Hirako's bankai, which is unleashed at the end of the book, however again barely anything happens, yes the stakes are raised and there is a build up for the reveal however it is so freaking slow and after the reveal someone hits the breaks and goes right back to more build up, more stuff is revealed about the world that weren't hinted at before and just exist cuz plot.
As much as I want to see the end of this story I don;t think I will pick up the sequel, it's a slogg to get through so many characters are reintroduced and later dropped and picked up again at random, I know that it's done to show how everyone and everything is affected yet it;s so damn slow, there is build up and then there is this shit. We also have the return of some wimpy male characters so attract agressive girls so want to jump their bones when they show the slightest back bone, are you trying to tells us something Kubo?
Mayuri is somehow an even worse monster in this one, mentioning how yeah I had quincy parents kill their kids while I recorded everything and set them on fire cuz science, apparently corpses of Arrancar that lose their head as long as there are drops of blood he can bring them back from the dead, how? fuck if I know, he is just that great cuz reasons.
Want a small POV of Hiyori, ok, that wimpy soul reaper from the start of the quincy arc? have several of them I insist, don;t forget quincy characters and arrancar characters and dead and revived arrancar characters and new shinigami chracters and....you get the point of it.
It was amusing to read how Kyoraku is proposing peace while Mayuri is marching revived arrancar in front of the current crop and casually electrocutes them for disobeying him.........yeah hell of an alliance.
this second volume was just as good and interesting as the first one. i loved diving deeper into the plot in this one and getting more answers to stuff while also still getting to see all the familiar faces. cant wait to see what happens in the last one.
“A man I do not see eye to eye with is trying to do something I don’t particularly like. Is it so strange that i would want to strike him from behind and hinder his progress?”
period🙂↕️ words to live by
great volume. it’s dealing with the nobles and it’s basically full of tea, what’s not to love??
also i love how we are getting glimpses of tosen’s past and how he came to be with aizen… i can’t wait to see what the last vol says about it
While I would still recommend this to anyone that is a fan of the series, this one has a few problems....
Firstly, it's way too padded. The first half or so of the book dragged on forever with very little seeming to happen. The book constantly explains things that anyone who has followed the series for a while (ie. the target audience) will already know. There is too much time spent on characters who are very minor in the story, though I did like the Arrancar stuff.
Secondly, the writing is very shaky at times. I think the problem is that the author is trying to write this like it is a manga series. For example, there are lines that just say, "...?". It can make it quite awkward to read. Also, as mentioned above, the constant explanation of previous events which really isn't required.
Some of the good points are that the story is very interesting and gaps in the story are slowly being filled in. We get some backstory on characters such as the Arrancar and Quincies which is pretty cool and unexpected. Also, I really like the illustrations in these books, they add a lot of character.
As the middle of a three-volume story, I expected that this would push the story forward more than provide any resolutions. Of course, I should have remembered that this is Bleach and shares the same strengths and weaknesses as any other incarnation of the series.
For me, what keeps drawing me back are the characters. This fictional world is populated by a diverse array of odd, unique characters. The series is at its best when examining those characters through their interactions with one another. That said, prose is the perfect format for doing so and this volume has a number of fascinating character interactions throughout.
However, this volume also falls prey to the great weakness of the series, overextended fight scenes. The bulk of this volume is dominated by two big fights. While this can work in a visual medium, it tends to drag in a purely prose arena. And, ultimately, it feels as though much of this volume is filler.
There is an interesting situation set up for the final volume, but it feels like the important story elements here could have been distributed to the surrounding volumes, which may have made for a tighter, more fluid, two-volume story.
Phew, finally finished this book. If you are a hardcore, read- the-manga Bleach fan then you should read this series.
A quick note, I know some readers are upset with the length of the book and lack of action, but remember how mangas read. And remember this series is written by mangakas aspiring to be novelists. Obviously, I love the art included.
I like the ending, a lot. The last 5 chapters were very much Bleach. The humor, the taunting, the characters, ugh I missed this!
My biggest issue was not knowing who was speaking! It really could just be me as my husband just accepted how it was written and no complaints whatsoever. My personal opinion is to do something similar to the following- “Blah blah blah” replied Megan. I know it’s repetitive and sucks, but the reader has to know who is saying what and when. Would be so much easier for the whole flow of the book. Constantly going back being like, ‘who’s in the room and who looked at who and who said what first’, that really got to me. Other than that, I have another giant book to read :p
I don’t know about the others, but I really love Hirako here lol. He was funny and amazing! Need to know his bankai!
Though, there are so many cliffhangers and too much info needed to digest. It was also long, but seemed like the story only moved a little. Still, it was okay for me.
Oh, what happened with Gremmy shocked me! I have mixed feelings about it, but I gotta admit, it was quite sad. I also liked Liltotto.

The second volume of the Bleach Light novels that continue the story of Tite Kubo worldwide phenomenon Bleach, Can’t Fear Your Own World II picks oui where the first book left off, with the trough led created by the main antagonist of the story escalating, and the backstory of Fullbringers and Hikone, the non-binary antagonist introduced is fleshed out.
Like the first volume, the benefit of the light novels in the Bleach universe is allowing for more minor characters from the Manga to have more dialogue and a role in the story, and also allowing their character developments and ties to Ichigo playing out. While at times it is hard to keep track of the events because I am used to the manga format with these stories, it was very enjoyable and loved the writing style that closely followed the style of both the manga and the anime. Can’t wait for the third and final volume in this story.
How could so much happen at the same time, yet lead to nowhere? This volume is just packed with things starting and ending with cliffhangers. I'm not exactly sure how all of this can be resolved by the final volume. I'm aware that this is essentially how manga is serialized before being published again into tankobon, but something about that pattern in novel format isn't translating too great for me. It took me quite a bit longer than expected to finish this because of that. That being said, a lot of exciting things have been set up so I did finish this genuinely looking forward to the next volume; I feel like this may only be a reaction shared among big fans of Bleach. As an aside, I was excited to see Hirako's Bankai finally revealed and explained, and am very much looking forward to Hisagi's in volume 3!
This a bit more entertaining than the First volume. I a still hampered by not reading the Manga, and knowing Details about the Quincy, Soul Society war. But there are enough clues , and I am Familar with the Anime enough to get by. There are a a lot of interesting three or even four sided battles. The head of research and development takes a more active more, and so does Kisuke. We get introduced to new enemies, and get hints about dark secrets in the soul society's past. I am looking forwards to volume three, and seeing how everything ties together
Shuhei Hisagi (69 face tattoo guy from the original Bleach series) is continuing to try to piece together what happened during the recent Quincy war. He begins this book by interviewing Kisuke Urahara, but there meeting is cut short when Aura Michibane (a strange Fullbringer woman) attacks and kidnaps Kisuke.
A bunch of familiar faces begin fighting in the The Rukongai and are later attacked by Hikone and his zanpakto.
Basically chaos ensues and Ichigo is out of town…. And apparently doesn’t have a phone?
If you're considering reading a Bleach light novel then you're already a Bleach nerd. It's got cool lore, the plot is OK, and Shuhei is a cool main character. But really it is only worth a read if you want to fill out and expand on some of the lore in the series. The writing isn't particularly interesting and very flowery.
It's like fanfiction - you read it because you're a fan of the original series, not because you're looking for something stimulating to read.
I love the way Ryohgo Narita writes, there is something just so beautiful about it. It’s informative but not to the point of too much information, although if you hadn’t read or watched Bleach already it might not be enough information. Also the ending (not including the chapter about Kaname Tosen) ends in such an annoying way, which is lessened slightly by the fact that the next volume was on my desk already.

dnt at chapter 7 I've been trying to read Can't Fear Your Own World II for a few days now but I have close to no will to read it, I can't bring myself to pick it up and I don't know why. Maybe I'll pick it up again later.
So much happens, but it all winds up being one huge nothing burger.
The second installment in Can't Fear Your Own World continues on with the same problems I found in Vol. 1 with a improved prose. That's really all. I hope Vol. 3 is more satisfying, interesting, and focused then this
A big long book of set up for the next book I suppose. I got exhausted reading this, but persevered for all of the characters. There’s such a large cast that it’s hard to focus on everyone for their own moments, but Narita certainly tries. Excited to read the finale and see where all of this leads!
So much and so little happens all at the same time. Felt a little dragged on but it was great to get more info about what happened after the anime. Four stars because it felt like added detail with a story planted in between. Good detail, not just rambling about unimportant things.
Better than the first volume. Since Hisagi, Kisuke, and Shinji are some of my favorite characters in the manga I probably enjoyed it more than it may have deserved. But same review as the first volume: if you love Bleach you will love this.
