Reid knew when he married a fireman that there’d be nights like this—sitting by helplessly while his man fought the hungry flames. But tonight’s fire is different, and Reid is starting to doubt whether even love is enough to bring Thane home again.

About the author

Kate Lowell

Kate Lowell lives on the east coast of Canada, in an old farm house that has way more personality than it has any right to. During the winter, she spends her time dreading snow, cursing at snow, shoveling snow, and scheming ways to shove it down the kids' necks. During the summer, she prays not to have snow. :)

Kate likes to play in ALL the sandboxes. While her main genres are paranormal and contemporary suspense, she is also interested in science fiction, fantasy and--weirdly--romantic comedy. She's willing to pay large amounts of money to anyone who can come up with plot-bunny repellent, which she will first use on herself, then sell to LA Witt for an exorbitant price to recoup her costs.

You can contact her at katelowellbooks (at) gmail.com . If you think you’d like to try writing gay romance, come visit her critique group (Link can be found at http://katelowell.com). New members are always welcome.

I don’t typically read short stories but wanted a sense of the authors style. First thing that bothered me: “...built in the seventies, in the traditional Art Deco style of the time,". Art Deco was the 20’s. So I’ll assume an editing error but depictions and scenes never felt authentic enough for me.

I think this was very well written and I could certainly feel Reid’s worry and fear over Thane as well as the strong love between the two. But beyond that, I feel like something was missing. There is a brief flashback to their initial meeting and eventual marriage but I still don’t know these characters. This short reads like an after-short following a full novel or novella about Reid and Thane. Instead, this is a .5 in the series and the only other story is not about them.
