Celtic warrior blood flowed in her veins, but as a gladiatrix-slave in Londinium's arena, Rhyddes was nothing more than a wild thing in a gilded cage. Yet though her Roman masters owned her body, she swore that none would claim her soul. How was it, then, that Marcus Calpurnius Aquila, noble son of the Roman governor, could make her yearn for things beyond her reach?

Famed as "The Eagle," Aquila preferred the purity of combat on the amphitheater sands to the sinister intrigues of imperial politics—and the raw power and grace of the flame-haired Rhyddes to the simpering

wiles of Rome's noblewomen. And when dark designs for power threaten to ensnare the two of them in a plot to overthrow Caesar himself, Aquila must choose between the Celtic slave who has won his heart…and the empire to which they both owe allegiance.

This book completely took me by surprise. I had read the synopsis, and was intrigued to check it out. I am very glad that I went ahead and read this book. It is epic. That is the only word for the journey that the main character goes on. The scope of her struggle is nothing short of amazing. I was so engrossed in the book, I read it in one sitting. It is an incredible story of one woman’s struggle under Roman rule. She is an incredible character.
Rhyddes ferch Rudd is a young woman about 18 years old. She is Celtic, part of the Votadini tribe. They had been conquered by the Romans. She has always felt like a slave, her father beats her, never showing an ounce of love for her. Her name means freedom, and this reason becomes clear in the story. When the Picts attack her village, she fights with her brothers- and finds herself fighting a female warrior. This became the beginning to her life as a warrior.
Marcus Calpernius Aquila is the son of the Governor of Britannia province, Sextus Calpernius Agricola. Marcus’ relationship with his father is strained at best. He likes to fight as a gladiator, whereas his father wants him to work toward politics, not associating with the lower class. He has his life decided for him when his father decides he is to marry Senator Falco’s daughter, Lady Messiena.

The story is set about 160 A.D. The Romans rule is far reaching, have conquered most everywhere in what is now Europe and Great Brittian. Rhyddes has no love loss for the Romans. They take and tax everyone to support Rome. Her father decides to sell her into slavery to get rid of her and pay his tax debt. Although her virginity had to be maintained, that did not keep the Roman guards from brutally assaulting her. This was the pattern her life would seem to be taking, everyone hurting her. She was sold to a lanista, Jamil of Tanis, who out bid Marcus. Marcus fell in love at the sight of her, but let Jamil buy her. They were friends, so he was not completely out of luck. Rhyddes struggle with becoming a gladiatrix and her feelings for Marcus are the focus of the story. There is also a very sinister plot brewing against the Emperors, and she will become a huge part of it. This book has so many things happening, and I do not want to spoil it. She must come to terms with her growing feelings for a roman when all the empire has done for her is cause her pain. And Marcus has his own journey while figuring out what is important to him and what he will do to achieve his goals. At every turn, their lives go in unexpected directions, pulling them apart because of chance or duty.
The way the author uses facts and fiction, woven together so seamlessly, makes you feel as though this story is truth, and it makes for an incredible experience. The pain and suffering of the heroine is so tangible, you can almost feel the heat and dust of the streets. I cannot say enough good things about this book. The peril and the intrigue will keep you turning the pages, hoping against hope that things will get better for Rhyddes. One can hope that the fates might smile upon the feisty Celt who has done nothing to deserve her station in life. And from his own gilded cage, I was rooting for Marcus for the same reason. It is a fabulous read, and if you liked Spartacus, you may find this is a perfect next Roman tale to sink your teeth into.

Rhyddes means freedom but she was never free. She is sold by her father to pay his tax debt. She is a virgin which means she needs to be delivered that way. That however doesn’t mean that they can’t do other things to her. She is then sold as a slave. She is paraded naked for anyone and everyone who walks by to see. The people who want to purchase her a free to touch her anyway they want. She is purchased by a man named Jamil. He intends to make her a gladiatrix-slave. Rhyddes is choices the name Libertas as her gladiator name. There is something about her that makes Jamil think of her more as a daughter. She meets a Roman man named Marces Aquila who fights as a gladiator. His is being groomed to follow in his father’s political footsteps. His father hates that he fights as a gladiator. Marcus must do whatever his father wants. He is set up to marry a girl because it will benefit him and the girl’s father. He doesn’t love her and isn’t even interested in her. He is falling for a gladiatrix. Will Rhyddes and Marcus get a chance to be together? Will Marcus stand up to his father?
I enjoyed this book. It was slow at times but well worth the read. Marcus and Rhyddes go through so much together and almost don’t make it. I don’t want to give away any spoilers. Rhyddes is attracted to Marcus right away but she doesn’t always like him. Things happen that neither one of them can control and create misunderstandings between them. Once Rhyddes understands things she sees Marcus in a different light. They know that under their current standings they could never be together but that doesn’t stop them from falling in love. Will their love be enough? There are lots of twists and turns in this book. There is a plan to over through the current people in charge that threatens both their lives. Will they be able to stop it and be together? They at the mercy of the gods. This book was wonderfully written with fantastic characters. The book was very interesting. You really felt like you were in the time of the gladiators. I was totally sucked into the book. Marcus and Rhyddes story was very moving. I didn’t expect it to end the way it did but loved it none the less.
I was given this book in return for an honest review.

This was a very good book and the historical aspect of it was simply amazing. I could feel in touch with the characters the whole way through the story and it kept my interest through flowing descriptions and an excellent use of details and picture words. I felt that it was really well-done and it was easy to get lost in the world of the story.

I think my only complaint lies in the very beginning of the book as we are being introduced to our characters and seeing their first interactions with each other. The female lead of Rhyddes was thoroughly examined and fleshed out while I felt that the male character of Aquila was left just a bit vague. We had only a half idea of his motivations in the beginning and while it did seem to remedy itself as we got further through the story, the developing romance between the two characters almost felt a bit weak simply for the fact that we did not yet have enough information about Aquila. I found it a bit difficult to understand why Rhyddes should go from hating him to giving him a chance so quickly.

However, that small thing aside, the story did move extremely well and we did eventually experience enough of Aquila's character that we could feel as much for him as we did for Rhyddes. And in the end of it all, you could really appreciate their relationship and feel yourself rooting for a happy ending for them both.

The action sequences were really well done and I must give Kimberly Iverson much respect for writing it as she did. As an aspiring writer myself, I have dabbled a bit in writing combat and it is no easy thing to get those action ideas to follow one step into the other as smoothly as it is in your head without sounding like a technical guide. I never felt once that I was being lectured about fighting and was able to experience each moment of it in the same elegant story-telling as constituted the rest of the story. Really, really well done.

Rhyddes family works to pay taxes to the romans. She is then sold into slavery by her father. She becomes a gladiatrix. She fights in an arena with other female gladiatrix for the sport of others.
Then there is Aquila, the son of the Roman governor. He wants to be in the arena but his family has other plans. He becomes betrothed by his family wishes for a political marriage.
He then meets Rhyddes at a slave auction and starts falling for her. He tries to buy her but is out bid. He sets out to try and win her over Rhyddes though never wants to let a Roman win her over.
It was a very good book. It moves at a good pace so you do not get bored.
I liked Rhyddes. She is a very strong women. She does not let anyone see her fear and is always strong. This book will keep you interested until the end.

Liberty is a captivating novel with so many variables that make it a true masterpiece. Our main character Rhyddes, which translates to mean Freedom daughter of Red (thus Liberty), is sold off to the Romans due to a tax debt. Here she must fight in the Gladiator arena. Fortunately Rhyddes fights well, it's that ancient Celtic warrior blood that runs through her veins that makes her fierce. Although Rhyddes is plagued with captivation and yearning for the Roman governor's son, Aquila. He too is irresistibly drawn to Rhyddes and vows to renounce his wealth and power for her. The charm of this novel kept me intrigued from the start. The savagery, ferocity coupled with the longing and purity of true love makes Liberty a captivating must read!

5 stars!

This book was a captivating book that had me at page 1. I really love the plot and the idea of a Roman senators son falling in love with a female gladiator. The book was not a disappointment and I loved the growing love between the hero and heroine. The heroine, Rhyddes was sold into slavery to pay her fathers debts and trained as a gladiator to fight. I love her characters so much. She was so full of spirit and determination, she never gave up hope on her freedom and was a very interesting person to read about.

Being a history buff, this one was extra special for me. I will say there is a lot of fighting and gore in this book (the romance angle is very, very light), as well as scenes that are about as un-PC as an author could get. But they fit the story and time period and read very true to life. For me, this book was a hit and one of the best I've read in a very long time.

The author's notes at the end of the book explain how her goal was to give a little history lesson while entertaining along the way. I would say that the author definitely attained her goal. I was disappointed with the story because it did not draw me in nor make me love and root for the characters. I rolled my eyes...a lot. The male lead character was supposed to be this big strong guy but he seems to get discouraged way to easily. Honestly the love story between Aquila and Libertas was very shallow. They were mostly in lust and not much in love. I had high hopes for this and was disappointed.

Freedom

I enjoyed reading this story! It's always fun to find a strong female in a time when men seldom allowed them to even speak. Liberty shows true strength as she battles to find her freedom. Love might also be in her future.

I met this author at a local art fair and I’m usually not much of a local reader so I was skeptical. Although this exceeded my expectations! If you like action, drama, and lots of romance, this book is for you! I also love the strong female lead!

Liberty is the first book I have read by Kim Iverson Headlee and certainly won't be my last.

The story is about Rhyddes, a young woman who is sold into slavery by her father as a means to pay off debts he owes. Her father, for reasons explained later in the book has always seemed to hate Rhyddes, and has treated her badly, even beating her. It was no hardship for him to sell her into slavery to pay off his debts. At the slave market she is purchased by a man who sets out to make her a female gladiator, a gladiatrix. She has no freedom and every fight she has could lead to her death.

Rhyddes whose gladiator name she chooses to be Libertas for it's ironic value, first sees Marcus, her love interest in this book, at the slave market. He is the son of a Roman Emperor. His relationship with his father is a volatile one. He enjoys training and fighting as a free gladiator, but his father wants more for him than that. He even arranges a marriage for him which he says is for Marcus' benefit, but truly will benefit him the most. Despite knowing that he is betrothed to another, he is instantly attracted to Rhyddes and tries to win her in the slave auction. He loses out to Jamil, the owner of the Gladiator school. Jamil is actually a friend of Marcus' though, so despite losing the auction, he still has a way to have contact with Rhyddes.

There great sub plots running through the story apart from the relationship between the main two characters. Marcus' father believes that Rhyddes, now known as Libertas could be a danger to both his son's betrothal, and because of her celtic origins, a threat to Rome as her popularity in the ring increases. One way or another he wants her removed from the picture. There is also a plot where Jamil gets his comeuppance after being in hiding from creditors. In turn Liberty is now a slave to the man who is trying to overthrow Marcus' father, so that he can take his place as an Emperor which is a huge part of the story. The plot to overthrow Emperor Marcus Aurelius is a complex one, and you will need to read the book to find out if it is thwarted or not.

The story is not a light read, and you need to keep your mind on the story to not end up confused about what is going on. All the plots are intertwined and you really need to take everything in for it to make sense. It's a very emotional read too, and your heart will bleed for the plight of Libertas, and what seems the impossible relationship with Marcus. The beginning of the story where all the characters and their relationships to each other are set out seems quite slow at times, but it's worth carrying on reading because as all the plots and twists and turns come together in a final show down you can't read quickly enough to get to the end to see what happens.

Although there is an underlying love story throughout this book, I wouldn't actually put it in a romance genre of books. I would have liked a lot more interaction between Libertas and Marcus before calling it a romance novel. That said, if the author did add more romance, the story wouldn't have been as epic as it is. The romantic in me was a little disappointed but not enough to not thoroughly enjoy the book and fully recommend it to others.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Vikki’s Musings

I recently read Snow in July by Ms. Headlee and enjoyed it a great deal. When I was offered a chance to read and review Liberty in exchange for an honest review, I was intrigued by the book description. Since I was familiar with the author as well, I decided to give it a read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this well-researched book in an era that is different than many of the novels that are available today.

The first scene quickly heats up, showing Rhyddes doing chores with her family. Her father is very harsh toward her and the brother closest in age to her, when he catches them in a playful moment. Rhyddes takes the blame, and her father back hands her so hard it leaves her reeling. Before he can do further damage, Pict raiders attack them. The attack leaves two of her brothers dead and her father and Owen wounded, but it is nothing compared to the disaster three days later, when her father sells her into slavery to pay his debts.

Marcus Calpurnious Aquila, while part of Roman aristocracy, fights as a gladiator against his father’s wishes. On the eve of his betrothal to Lady Messiena, his father tells him he can no longer fight in the arena. However, his betrothed wishes to see him so his father agrees to allow him to fight one final battle. When he proves victor of the match, while the crowd gives the thumbs up for his opponent, his father gives the thumbs down and Aquila has to kill the man.

When Rhyddes arrives in Londinium, she is purchased by Jamil, the owner of a Gladiator school. She will be trained to be a Gladiatrix. When she witnesses a brutal killing by Aquila, not understanding Latin, she assumes that he chose to kill his opponent, so does not want anything to do with him.

As Rhyddes learns the language, she finds out what truly happened and her heart softens toward the handsome Roman. Even though the attraction between the pair is fierce, there can never be together, since Aquila is betrothed and Rhyddes is a slave.

Although Rhyddes and Aquila try to deny their attraction, it is too strong. Is it possible that this ill-matched couple and their forbidden relationship manage to find a way against all odds?

I enjoyed being pulled into an era from so long ago. Ms. Headlee’s vivid descriptions of the times brought this book to life. I can only imagine the amount of research she did to write Liberty. I became so enmeshed at times that I felt as if I were in the arena fighting. The suspenseful scenes enhanced this story tremendously.

The pacing is very good at the start of the story and also at the end. It slows a bit in the middle, especially when Rhyddes and Aquila are apart. I would have liked to see a bit more interaction between them. That would have helped the romance aspects of this book.

Overall, this is an enjoyable romance, and I’m glad I had a chance to read this entertaining story. If you want a great account of the life and times in ancient England and Rome, you will definitely enjoy Liberty. Happy reading!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Rhyddes' journey from farmer's daughter to gladiatrix to...don't worry I won't spoil it!

The story was well-written, although I do believe some liberties (ha! pun intended)were taken in the events that transpire at the end of the novel. But this is not a historical document or treatise so I never had an expectation of total and complete accuracy to begin with. It is a work of fiction and I truly enjoyed it as such. The plot twists kept me completely engaged in the story.

The settings were beautifully described. I could almost hear the roar of the blood thirsty crowd as "Libertas" stood waiting to being her fights in the ring. The difference in Britannia and Rome were highlighted well and I felt the stifling atmosphere of the city just as the characters did.

The characters were very well-developed even if their emotions were a little difficult to comprehend. At time Rhyddes seemed too cold and too proud, incapable of understanding how much Marcus loved her. Some readers took this negatively where I looked to how she was treated by her father and the fact that she had no example of true love or affection to follow. And Marcus seemed the typical "spoiled little rich" man, however we come to understand the familial pressure he is under with his father's political ambitions. I must honestly say that Jamil was truly my favorite character in the entire story. How he progresses, mentally and emotionally, from the beginning of the story to the end left me with tears in my eyes.

While the names of characters and places were hard to wrap my head around at first I did eventually get used to them. Warning this story is not for the faint of heart as it includes violence and sexual assault. It is not a light, easy read by any means, but the time is well worth the awesome ending!

LIBERTY by Kim Iverson Headlee is an enticing Ancient Romance Historical Romance set around 160 AD Rome. *This is the second edition*

This is the tale of one woman's struggles, Rhyddes (aka-Liberty) a glaiatrix-slave, sold by her father for a debt owed to a Roman tax collector. "Liberty/Libertas" is the tale of betrayal, intrigue, sacrifice, survival, lust, romance and unrequited love.

Also, meet Marcus Calpurnis Aquila is the son of a Roman governor, "Aquila" or "Eagle" who is falling in love with the noble, Celtic Warrior, Liberty.

While, an interesting tale, some of the language felt a bit out of place for the era, overall, an interesting and satisfying read. Liberty had a hopeless, helpless life, but though it all she kept her soul intact. "Liberty" is a story with many facets, and characters. Well written with an interesting cast of characters. The storyline is rather unique in the premise of young love, lovers who can never be together, for a Gladiators' life is to "obey or die". Interesting and intriguing, but at times very frustrating as well. This story is NOT for the faint of heart, some parts of the story was hard to read. This story is at times hard to follow, not easy to read, but overall a unique and entertaining read. If you enjoy Ancient Rome, Historical Romance, a story with many facets, than I would recommend picking up "Liberty".

*Please be warned, this story is NOT for the faint of heart as it does have scenes which includes violence and sexual assault**

THIS IS ONE GREAT STORY..I AM SO GLAD I DIDN'T MISS IT..HOPE YOU DON'T,IF YOU LIKE THIS KIND OF STORY
I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK FOR AN HONEST REVIEW AND THIS IS MY HONEST OPINION
You have Rhyddes ferch Rudd (18) beaten by her father Rudd and finally sold to the Romans for a slave, to pay her fathers taxes. She was abused by the Romans on the way to the slave markets, were she was sold to Jamil of Tanis the gladiator trainer as a gladiatrix salve (she fought under a couple names 1st given to her by Jamil and after her 1st win she was allowed to choose her own name and design her own outfit). Jamil was good to her and protected her as much as he could. Then there were a male volunteer gladiator, Marcus Calpurnius Aguila son of a Roman governor. Governor Agricola decided that his son would stop his fooling around with the gladiators and marry Senator Falco daughter, Lady Messiena. A father could tell his kids (male or female what they had to do, no matter the age), and he didn't want an arranged marriage. Now all these peoples life's intermingled, and others some of real importance , and many considered from little to no importance. There are many twist and turns in the story BUT IT IS A GOOD ONE with a happy ever after (just a lot of fun, sadness, love, hate, murder, rescues, and happiness. I also love it that she puts information in the back about where information comes from, what was real and what was not, she even list words you might not know and gives the meanings. What more could you want? I LOVED IT and bet you would too.

Rhyddes is a young woman who is sold by her abusive father as a Roman tax debt. She is sold as a slave to the arena where she is trained as a Gladiatrix. After learning to live by one rule obey or die she becomes the best. Although she learns to live by these Roman rules she holds on to her Celtic heritage.
Aquila is a Roman nobleman groomed by his father to further his career but Aquila loves the freedom of fighting in the arena. He soon becomes enamoured with Rhyddes but she rebukes his advances. However after spending time together they realise that their feelings are true but they can never be together. When they find themselves involved in a plan to kill Caesar they must decide what they want their future to be.

I was a little hesitate when I started reading because of the setting but after reading the first chapter I was engrossed. Rhyddes is a true warrior woman; she becomes a formidable fighter but also keeps her inner strength to the end. She is a perfect blend of strength and vulnerability.
Aquila is expected to follow his father’s plan stop fighting, get married and begin a political career but sometimes the Gods have other plans. I liked the growth of Aquila's character throughout the book.

I really enjoyed the plot with fantastic descriptions of the arena action as well as the relationships Rhyddes makes. One of my favourite relationships was between Rhyddes and Jamil it has tenderness in a harsh setting.
It is well written and draws you in from the beginning, with great description and beautiful relationship I would recommend it.

Liberty was a fantastic story. It was a very substantial novel and although it is a work of fiction, does have some historically accurate components, along with some notes at the end from author explaining what is fact and what she has adapted for the purposes of the story. There was so many facets to the story, the romance, the gladiator world, the political world, there were so many elements that made the story complex. There was action, drama, romance and a depth to the characters that compelled me to keep reading. Rhyddes possessed a strength of character that was admirable, and it was very easy to feel for her as the story progressed. Marcus Aquila is a likable hero, with the few exceptions where he behaved poorly. Overall, this was a great read, and I would recommend it to any historical romance lovers.

It was another up way too late book for me. The first little bit of the book I found trying, but I did get into it and loved it! I took it to work with me to read at lunch and it was all I could think about till then.
Taking place in Britannia and Rome in around 200 AD, this is story about a Celtic girl sold by her father into slavery and what she does to not only forgive him, but get herself out of the slavery (become a gladiatrix). The cast of characters from the guards to the Roman nobles to the gladiators were well formed and most of the time in a weird way amusing.
This is a historical romance, but not in a woohooy way. The romance was very tasteful and mild, definitely not a bodice ripper type book. As always with historical books I read I learned something about the time period that it took place in (I have to look things up to make sure that it is correct).

What an amazing historical romance! In this book the author via her unique story telling transports us to ancient Rome. Rhyddes is sold by her father and she ends p being trained to be a gladiatrix. She falls for a Roman man even though this is an impossible relationship as she maintains her Celtci heritage and he is a noble man. This was a well written and developed story with beautiful and strong characters. You will feel a range of emotions throughout this fantastic book. I continue to enjoy reading this author's books as they continue to transport me to different times and places.

I think this is the third book that I've read from this Author, and I can honestly say that it keeps getting better!!
This time, I was blessed with Liberty, an amazing Historical Roman's Romance.
Our Gladiatrix, Rhyddes/Liberty, it's one of my favorite Heroine of all times, she's not only beautiful but also fearless, a real warrior with deadly curves. Her relationship with Marcus it's one of the high points of the story, come on, I know, sounds girly, but for me, it's always about love.
The story is full of action, of twist and turns, love and the historic scenery its fascinating.
I, once again (Thanks Kim), highly enjoyed reading this book and recommend to every type of reader.

A wonderful historic romance. This one is a read that kept me hanging onto every word and wanting to know more of what happened. I love books like this not just because they hold my attention, but because of how accurate the author got the time period. Kim Headlee has once again proven how much research it takes to find the right words to fit the time period and setting that she wants to portray. She nailed this one and I really enjoyed it. Page after page, never wanting to stop reading. This author and book has made it onto my favorites list and my must re-read list. I loved it and can't wait to read more from this author.

I was really torn if I liked this book in the beginning. However as I read more of the story and got to know the characters more I really enjoyed it. For me this wasn't your typical story. The author did a great job of making the story very real. Just like life its messy and people are unhappy and have to make choices between bad decisions and go with the best thing they can. I really loved that the main character turns out to be a tough women. Reading this story I imagined that it was just like what it would have been in the past. I was sucked in and couldn't put it down!

Liberty is the first book I have read by Kim Iverson Headlee. I enjoyed this book. I thought the story line to be unique and refreshing. Rhyddes is a great, strong character. I admired her courage, bravery and will to survive.

I enjoyed listening to the audio version of Liberty. Lillian Rachel’s voice was a perfect fit for this story. Her performance was great.

I am giving Liberty four stars. I would love to read more by Kim Iverson Headlee in the future.
I received the audio version of this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

This is a new genre for me. The names and language is a bit confusing and hard to catch onto. That is the only downfall.
This is a long story full of drama and heartbreak that keeps you flipping the page to see which obstical will come between the two lovers next, what tragedy will befall young Rhyddes next. This is a real page turner even if you get discombulated in the period language.
Warning, greusome content and sexual assault. Not for anyone looking for a light read

Kim Headlee's "Liberty" is a beefy standalone novel that's nearly twice as long as the average indie romance novel I read. The characters and time period and gladiatrix scenario are all very interesting. You just want to keep reading and reading to find out what happens next. The characters are all flawed and very deep and well thought out. I definitely enjoyed this. The sex scenes were of a more "closed door" nature, but you could still feel the passion and love between Rhyddes and Aquila.

This was a first for me reading a romance set in ancient Rome, I really enjoyed. The author did such a great job of describing everything from the landscape, buildings, and people and way life.
The story itself was really well done with Rhyddes and Aquila and their turbulent stories separate and together. The battle scenes were described to perfection and it was just a very fun read!!

~~~~~~~~~~Lindsey's ★★★★ Review~~~~~~~~~~
Historical romance is one of my favorite sub genres of fiction. This book by Kim Iverson Headlee was a great escape from reality and a superb story. I love anything Irish or genetically Celtic. This book is a must read!
