Fabulous.

This is the first book I have read from this author, and it was excellent. The characters were believable and relatively likeable, although none of them stood out for me. The story is told over seven days on the separate journeys of Reid his daughter Hannah, Emily and Brienne.
The pace is constant, and it is a page-turner. I feel that the book is lacking in the way that food needs seasoning.

Make This A Movie

This story has the making for a good movie! As I read, I kept looking and petting my dog- assuring myself she would not.....no that would be a spoiler. There are plenty of books written about viruses escaping labs, bio weapons and the like that are good apocalyptic stories, this one is different- trust me- I’ve read plenty (read my reviews). I’ll be honest, I took to reading apoc novels again as CVID-19 (corona virus) was circling the globe and the governor of my state had imposed a stay at home order. Seven Days was the thriller I never expected to keep me awake- it’s happening to us now and I’m scared stiff.
I give this book two thumbs up and 5 stars for it is well written, great character development and a believable story line (truly a real life scenario). About the choice of dogs.....sad but again...very believable.

Apocalyptic Fun!

Well, Not really fun so much as riveting. Enjoyed the plot, characters and end-of-the -world-as-we-know-it details. The only thing I didn't like is how the dog flu is too close to covid19 in our real world. I would recommend this author and will read more of his books.

If you haven’t read G. Michael Hopf’s New World Series, and this is your first time diving into his work, Seven Days might hold some appeal—especially for a younger audience, say, a 14-year-old boy enamored with post-apocalyptic stories. However, for anyone familiar with Hopf’s previous works, this novel feels like more of the same, with predictable tropes, shallow characters, and an overly macho tone. Having finished his New World Series, I had hoped for a fresh perspective or a different style, but instead, I got more of what left me jaded in the first place.

The plot initially promises a thrilling race against time: a father desperate to get his daughter to a facility with a vaccine after a deadly outbreak. But the execution is underwhelming. Instead of gripping tension, the story meanders. The narrative splits between two main characters: Reid, and a woman named Brianne, who left her family to pursue her career and somehow managed to return to the U.S. after the outbreak. While the story alternates between their perspectives, the focus shifts unevenly, leaving neither arc particularly compelling. The climax—where the two characters finally meet—feels anticlimactic and pointless after everything has already been resolved.

The dialogue is perhaps the most frustrating aspect of the book. Characters often talk to themselves, narrating their thoughts in a way that feels unnatural. It’s as if the author doesn’t trust the reader to infer anything, so every motivation is spelled out explicitly. The dialogue reads like it was written for children, with a constant need for characters to justify their actions out loud. Combine that with Hopf’s penchant for glorifying guns and hyper-masculine ideals, and the story becomes tedious. Men are tough, gun-loving, and stoic, while women are invariably slim and attractive. This over-reliance on stereotypes strips the characters of depth and makes them feel more like cardboard cutouts than real people.

Brianne, in particular, is a frustrating character. She’s portrayed as a hardened survivor who has endured unimaginable challenges, yet she often makes decisions that completely contradict her supposed survival instincts. For example, she repeatedly risks everything, veering off course to help others in situations that scream “trap.” Her priorities shift on a whim, and her logic crumbles whenever the story requires a convenient moment of sensitivity or impulsiveness. Meanwhile, Michael, a sensitive and fragile teenager, inexplicably transforms into a pragmatic, hardened figure when the plot demands it. The inconsistency in their characterizations undermines any sense of authenticity or emotional connection.

The book’s predictability further drags it down. Hopf’s reliance on familiar post-apocalyptic tropes makes the story feel derivative. The gun fetishization—pages spent detailing firearms, their assembly, and their use—might appeal to readers with a particular interest in that subject, but for me, it quickly become tiresome (not again..). Brianne’s arc feels like a recycled version of characters from Hopf’s previous works, particularly the New World Series. She evolves from a civilian to a gun-wielding expert who never misses a shot, but it’s so formulaic that it fails to be engaging.

Ultimately, Seven Days feels like a missed opportunity. While it’s a fast read with plenty of action, it lacks the depth, tension, and emotional resonance that could make a post-apocalyptic novel truly memorable. If you’re a fan of Hopf’s style, you might enjoy it, but for me, it confirmed that I’m ready to move on from his books.

"... mindset is the key to survival.”

I have been reading a few pandemic books since we're all being confronted by the COVID-19 virus. I don't know what that says about me (a glutton for punishment, maybe?) but I've always enjoyed these type of books along with other books of the post-apocalyptic genre.

Nine years ago the H5N7, or dog virus, decimated the world population, killing 87% of the people who are infected. Then, after the virus hit, two major world powers decide to nuke each other. Smart, huh? Not an efficient way to control population growth if you ask me.

In Deliverance, Oklahoma there is a community of survivors that are doing well. Reid, who lived through having the virus, and his 9 year old daughter, Hannah, live there. Reid is approached about going on a dangerous mission but doesn't agree until Hannah shows the first signs of being infected. Now she has 7 days to live.

This was an okay book. It seemed to me to be Pandemic Lite 101. It glossed over a lot of the details that I would have enjoyed reading about concerning the beginnings of the disease and the war. And the characters were a little flat. I would have rated this 3 1/2 stars if I could have. I ended up rounding that to 4 because it did hold my interest for most of the book and wasn't too bizarre.

Missing something

Interesting brief story of the results of a virus and subsequent nuclear holocaust.
The story (prologue to epilogue) spans nine years but focuses sharply on one week in the lives of a handful of people.
The main protagonists are Reid, one man that lost his wife to the virus and his daughter Hannah who is now 9.
The story seems sound. Like a body needs a skeleton to remain upright, it also needs the depth of organs and tissues to make it viable and mobile, this story moves but lacks something. Thoughts and decisions abound but something is missing.

Good plot with lots of potential

I quite enjoyed the plot and most of the characters. Some of the events that happen are well thought out and the pacing is done well enough to keep you hooked. The only negative I have is that sometimes the writing isn't as smooth as it could be, sometimes redundant or unnecessary phrases in sentences. I would definitely consider reading a 2nd book in this story.

A book to make you think. What would you do and go through to try to save your child. A wild trip across country trying to get to what you heard was a research center on an island off California. Capture along the way. Odd characters to mix with the mail characters. Full of suspense. A well thought out story with characters that will make you remember then for a long time. Don't expect to lay this book down and come back later. It is a page turner.

A Very good story

I enjoy the post apocalyptic genre. I chose this book because the premise interested me and also because it is a standalone story. I wasn't in the mood to begin a saga. I was very pleased with this book! It is filled with interesting characters. I had a difficult time setting it aside for a while, like to sleep. I would highly recommend this book to those who enjoy this genre.

Since we are going through this pandemic and there are so many unknowns, I could relate to the situation that the characters are going through. This dystopian world goes a bit further to capture what a desperate group of people might do to stay alive and how a parent will fight for their children no matter what. This aligned to our world with the virus running rampant and affecting our lives in a very personal manner. Read it to find out how desperate people can get.

Good book

This book kept my interest and I didn't start skipping pages. I liked the characters. This is a story about peoples lives in a post apocalyptic time without a bunch of unnecessary gore and violence. Not a bunch of unnecessary pages of boring writing to fill the book. Michael Hopf is a new author to me. I see he has written many books so I have a lot of reading to do.

I was super intrigued after reading the blurb but boy, half of the book was so boring to me.That said, about 10% leading to the ending was so sad and I read a lot of reviews condemning the ending but I think that was appropriate and realistic without the dramatic victory you often see in this type of book. I would definitely recommend this book to readers who like this kindof book but make sure to have a coffee next to you to get through the first half.

This is the best book I've read in a while. I read a lot of post apocalyptic books and this one grabbed my interest in the first chapter, which I enjoy since I don't like to have a large amount of background material to read through before getting to the meat of the book. I created time to read this book because I couldn't wait to get back to the story. There were several believable twists that I didn't see coming. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Survivers with a purpose!

Great plot with a happy ending. Little Hannah survives the dog flu with the help of her father despite desperate times and plenty of nefarious people. Michael finds a caring, responsible adult to team up with. It all adds up to a great storyline. If there's a sequel I'll read it too! Highly recommend it!

Amazing!

It is a great book with a great storyline. It is a good book for both young adults and Adults. I read this book in a matter or days. It had me immersed in the world of the different characters, and the he hinted at the ending several times. I had several emotions reading this book and would recommend it for anyone 13+.

This was not a bad book. It kept me interested and wanting to know what was coming next but to me there was a few oddly written areas in the book that did not need to be there. For example several times in the book he simply wrote, two people where walking along the road . It was.... The names of the characters in the book. Just seemed odd to me and why I rated it low.

I wasnt sure on this to start as it was a bit slow whilst it is setting the scene - but you have it all dog flu and nuclear bombs and gangs - it is all there and adds up. it was really interesting how the strands came together and worked well and the ending was so sweet. I really liked the narration.

Great find on the audible plus catalogue.

With such an overdone genre, it’s hard to stand out. This one is done very well. Yes, it’s predictable, and yes, the characters sometimes don’t make perfect sense, but there’s plenty of depth for the length of book and to keep the plot moving. I’m also pretty thrilled that it doesn’t introduce a lengthy series—it seems most post-apocalyptic books do that.

He did it again!

Another great read from G. Michael Hopf. I love his Westerns but the post apocalyptic books are always excellent. This book is no exception.

I am not going to give you a synopsis, just get the book and enjoy a tale from a master storyteller.

Enjoyed the story

A very good story, one filled with hope, regret, pain and survival. The dog flu helped destroy the world, but now rumors of a cure reach the walls of Deliverance. Reid and Hannah have limited time to find a cute, can they find it in seven days?

Despite following well-used post-apocalyptic trends, Hopf has done a decent job.
The separate stories of characters converge nicely, and he paints a realistic view of life after the event.
Worth a read.

Good apocalyptic novel. The daughter was overly dramatic and annoying to the point of frustration, but once you got through her tantrums and the dad's refusal to make her obey (during a pandemic/apocalypse of all things) the story was a good interesting listen.

Pretty good, at least he makes it logical, not so totally far out that I cannot find believable. OTOH, how could I ever have believed this futuristic current event? There are some post apocalyptic works that just make no sense to me. Good narrator.
