To repeat what other reviews have said, please please take notice of the warning at the beginning of the book. The content is graphic and heartwrenching.
That said, the content is also extremely well written, and the characters come to life quickly (which is handy, as it's only a very short book) I felt so much hatred for Drake instantly. And then realising that Gavin knew it was happening and did nothing - I wanted to reach into the book and punch him. And then the realisation that if Gavin knew, Mom probably did too - and as a mother, that just made me so angry, that she did nothing to save her daughter.
There were a couple of things that surprised me in the book, and made it less believable for me:
1) After being abused numerous times by various men whilst growing up, Skylar is then surrounded solely by male characters at the college. When Dr Higgard realises what she's been through, I would have expected them to provide a female counsellor / female RA / SOMEBODY female for her to have around. The only female we hear about apart from Skylar is the Dean's receptionist.
2) Skylar is told that she is part Vila and the granddaughter of Pan - and just accepted it, without question. Living in a world where these things are myths and legend, I would have expected her to need at least a little proof. Oh, and by the way, you're going to go live at the underground college - yep, no problem, show me the way....
But, that said, I am looking forward to the next book and finding out what happens next
