Lee is a jaded young man living in a district owned and overseen almost exclusively by vampires. When he mouths off to one of their flunkies, his life loses all of its carefully constructed order. This is my second book by Leona Bentley, and I find her writing quite works for me.

I really liked Liam, and Bale. Ira? Well, I suppose I liked him, but for someone claiming to be very possessive, he really should take better care of his things. I mean, pretty much 95% of the conflict in this book is because Ira wasn’t minding his things very well.

I do wonder if some of the content was cut, because at one point Liam mentions the previous times Ira had bitten him… but that hadn’t happened on page prior to that scene. I do also wish there was more Ira and Liam just being together, selling the romance a bit more, than just running around trying to problem solve.

But, overall I really enjoyed this and I’ll probably be kicking myself for reading it knowing it’s book 1, with no book 2 in site. I found the ending satisfying enough, but it definitely is HFN, and I’d like to see a HEA.

From the cover to the settings to the storyline, this book was delightfully dark, depressing and dreary. Well, actually, the plot wasn’t dreary, but I thought that bit of alliteration worked well together, so I just ran with it.

This story has an almost post-apocalyptic feel to it, with our main character Lee barely managing to eek out a living in a rundown, one bedroom apartment he shares with his brother and his brothers’ girlfriend. The city is run by vampires, many of whom hold little regard for the humans who live beneath their rule. Unfortunately for Lee, he has a bad habit of running off his snarky mouth at any vampire who looks at him funny. Mosquitoes, as he insists on calling them, are not deserving of his respect. But then he meets Ira, and though Lee can tell that there’s something fishy going on, for the first time ever he finds himself attracted to a vampire.

I absolutely adored the interaction between Ira and Lee. At times I wondered if the snarking would get to be too much, but I think the author balanced it just right with everything else that was going on. In terms of the romance, I didn’t feel that it was the major focus of the story, but that could just be because the secretive goings-on of the vampires had snared my attention so well. The way the author wrote this book, keeping Ira so mysterious throughout, I never really felt certain that Lee was completely safe with him. And I liked that. Obviously, the book is a romance, so a happy ending is pretty much guaranteed, but there was still an element of danger every time the two main characters were together.

Though the city the story is set in is all kinds of depressing, I totally enjoyed reading about the bleak world the characters existed in, and I hope that this actually is the first book in a new series, as the title suggests. Fingers crossed that a second book would continue the story of Lee and Ira, but there are a couple of other characters who could totally do with some love.

Where do I start? This book is about Liam, who works at a library and also lives in a bug infested apartment with his brother and his brother's girlfriend. He thinks all vampires are pests, so he calls all of them mosquitoes. He hates vampires, despises them. Until he meets Ira, Ira intrigues him and piques his interest. He can't get the vampire out of his head, especially not when Ira's so keeps causing problems.

Ira is an old vampire, he has many followers and has been around for quite some time. His son stole from him long ago, that he could overlook but killing those who were loyal to him was the last straw. Then going after his mate? Ira had to take care of that problem.

I really enjoyed Liam's sarcasm and his snarky comments, despite being surrounded by vampires he keeps giving them a hard time. His character was one I enjoyed but also wanted to ask "what on earth are you doing?". It's almost like he had a death wish at times, but I also enjoyed that. Ira kept calling Liam his Wyrm, which I thought was cute. The action scenes were really detailed, and the writing was good. I personally just had a difficult time getting into this story, I felt like it was really slow going. And I'm not sure if this is going to be a series but it leaves a lot of things unfinished. In the story Ira mentioned making Liam his completely, but then it wasn't brought back up again. Same with the vague mentions of Ira's other kids, it was mentioned but we didn't get much information.

Despite that I did enjoy the overall read it just didn't blow me away, I still recommend this though. Especially if you want a unique take on vampires.

*I received an early copy of this book and this is my honest review.*

Very dark and unique universe where humans and vampires co-exist. Liam lives in a small run down apartment with his brother and his brother's girlfriend. They only just scrape by even though all three of them work. Liam works the night shift in a library, when Ira a new local overlord comes by one day and they start an interesting relationship fueled by Ira's fascination with Liam and Liam's big mouth. It's not quite clear in the beginning, what Ira wants from Liam, but throughout the book the puzzle pieces start fitting together and something more grows between them.
If this, as the title suggest, is the first book in a series, then it was a good start. There were a few odd moments and a few editing mistakes, but the book was exciting enough for me to look forward to the next one.

Mosquito District was a dark and well written, with great world building. It felt apocalyptic. Liam works in a library in a world that is overrun and controlled by vampires. He lives in a bug invested home with his brother and brother’s girlfriend. He calls the vampires mosquitos and has a passionate dislike for them. Ira is an old vampire that Liam mouths off to. Every time Liam mouthed off, I though, “Ohh no here it goes.” I loved Liam’s sass and snark! Ira thinks that Liam can help him find answers to something…. You’ll have to read it. Overall, this is a good read.
