'Although this novel follows Flynn’s A Greater World, it can stand alone, since the characters’ backstories are introduced non-intrusively. Will’s exploits on the seas and in coastal regions, notably Zanzibar and Naples, and Hannah’s confined life and mannerisms in pre-WWII Liverpool are presented vividly, displaying the author’s talent and extensive research. The descriptions of the sea voyages and locales are undoubtedly based on Flynn’s travels. The novel’s skillful plot elucidates the harsh treatment of some women during the period. Readers will look forward to the sequel. Recommended.' Historical Novel Society

William Kidd left Australia ten years ago, he’s traveled the world and he’s a merchant seaman. He left because his father Jack committing a terrible crime, his father was hanged for murder and he’s not seen his stepmother Elizabeth since.
His ship arrives in Liverpool, he meets Hannah Dawson, her father’s extremely religious and he’s crazy. He’s a bully, he hits his wife Sarah, Hannah and her sister younger Judith. Hannah works for her father, he’s owns the Morton Coffee Company and it’s struggling financially. Hannah looks just like Will’s stepmother Elizabeth, and they discover she’s Hannah’s aunt and her mother’s long lost sister. She left England fifteen years ago, she disappeared and Sarah had no idea her sister was living in Australia.
Hannah’s informed by her father he’s arranged for her to marry Samuel Henderson, his father's the minster of the church her father attends, and it’s a marriage of convenience. Will’s devastated when he finds out Hannah was forced to marry someone else, he leaves Liverpool on a ship bound for Africa, and when he returns months later, and he’s shocked to discover Hannah isn’t legally married to Sam. Hannah and Judith are finally free from their father and his violence. I received a copy of Storms Gather Between Us from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, Clare Flynn never disappoints and four stars from me.
Since escaping his fathers notoriety in Australia, Will Kidd has spent a decade sailing the seas. Content to live the life of a wanderer, everything changes in a single moment when he comes face to face with a ghost from his past on a beach trip in Liverpool.
What a well written book this is. Not always an easy topic to write about, brutal parents, husbands/fathers who must be obeyed, thank goodness times have changed for the better. Hannah, her sister and mother live in fear of their father. Will Kidd had left the Australian shores, sailing the seas. Their chance meeting in Liverpool, Will knew Hannah's aunt, brings a lot of memories to the fore. A great cast of characters and a good old fashioned storyline made this a great read.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Canelo and the author Clare Flynn for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This latest novel by Clare Flynn kept me enthralled for the past two days. It is a story of love and loss, courage and compliance. Set in a time women were still expected to obey their fathers and husbands without question, Hannah is at the mercy of her brutal father, a religious zealot. She, together with her mother and sister, live in constant fear of his rage and reprisals for any disobedience on their parts. The sudden arrival of Will, an Australian seaman who knew her aunt, into her life sets Hannah on a path which will introduce her to a variety of colorful characters, who will expel her innocence and cause her to discover a courage she was unaware she possessed. The descriptions were evocative, I especially loved the part set in Zanzibar (as I live in Africa), and the use of small sections of the dialogue in different languages added to the authenticity of the story. All the characters were flawed in some way, which made them real and relatable. I found this book compelling reading and thoroughly enjoyed it, including the unexpected ending.
Y'all I had the best weekend curled up with this book! Storms Gather Between Us is my first read by Clare Flynn and now I see why everyone raves about her! I see a Clare Flynn book buying spree coming up in my future :)
Storms Gather Between Us tells the story of Will Kidd, a young man currently working on cargo ships, and Hannah Dawson, who lives with her family including an overbearing awful father who pretty much controls her life. In her home, the women are to be seen and not heard, and should definitely not question their father's dwindling business and poor choices.
After sailing the seas for years, Will is a lost man. His family is gone tragically and he's unsure of his future. Hannah is desperate to get out from under her father's grasp and begin a life of her own.
When Will and Hannah meet one day in Liverpool their connection is powerful, and it comes to light that Will knew Hannah's aunt, whom the family never speak of. The love between Will and Hannah grows strong and they must figure out a way to be together and get away from Hannah's father.
I didn't realize that this book was a continuation from A Greater World but I wasn't lost at all and now I can't wait to go back and read that one. I truly loved this read and am very excited at picking up more novels from Clare Flynn!
In 1937, having left Australia due to the infamy caused by his father’s actions, young seaman Will Kidd is serving on cargo ships plying their trade between Liverpool and Africa. Although enjoying the pleasures found in seaports, Will suffers under a disciplinarian bosun who despises him and attempts to curtail his career.
In Liverpool, Hannah Dawson lives in a strictly controlled household under her religious and abusive father. After enduring business losses, he concocts a despicable financial recovery scheme that involves Hannah. Will had known Hannah’s aunt in Australia. In an amazing coincidence, Hannah and Will meet at a Liverpool beach. It’s love at first sight, but Will has to act quickly to enact his plans, hoping to counteract Hannah’s father’s scheme and escape the looming war.
Although this novel follows Flynn’s A Greater World (2018), it can stand alone, since the characters’ backstories are introduced non-intrusively. Recommended.

I'm a fan of Clare's writing and can't wait for new works. Her writing style is easy reading and her stories are full of colorful characters and interesting plotlines. This book is no exception with its plotline twists and turns. If you have a couple of me-hours and you want to disappear into another interesting period in time and place, I highly recommend reading Storms Gather Between Us.
I very much enjoyed this book by Clare Flynn. How i love a good saga and the picture on the front cover alone would have had me picking up this book. A wonderful story and one in which i can recommend. I hope to read more by this author.
My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy. This is my honest review, freely given.
I have loved all the books of Clare Flynn that I have read and this one is no exception. Set in a period of time way before ours, when women weren't allowed to have their say, this is an evocatively written story, with beautiful descriptions. I liked the different places it was set in as well..I love reading about characters in settings different from mine. Overall a great read.
Alongside a conventional "boy meets girl but they cant be together" love story, this is a story of love, loss, courage, hope, yet with an underlying darkness as it touches on domestic violence, abuse, bullying and religious bigotry.
Hannah & her sister Judith live with their mother & their abusive but religiously obsessed father in Liverpool. The family business is failing and the future looks bleak for Hannah Will is a sailor, escaping bad memories & a difficult family in Australia. When Hannah & Will meet, both their lives are turned upside down - family secrets are exposed, and love is tested.
The book concludes as war breaks out in 1939 & leaves so many unanswered questions! There is definitely another story waiting to be told, the wartime story of Hannah & Will and of course Judith.
Disclosure: I received this book free from NetGalley for review, but all opinions are my own.
This actually is a pretty compelling saga. Hannah and Will should not have met- he's a sailor and she's the daughter of an abusive religious man. Will knew Hannah's aunt and, in traveling to Liverpool, he never expected that he would fall in love with Hannah. These two set off on an adventure in life, with love powering them through. It's also an interesting look at life just before WWII. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Will Kidd has left Australia for a life at sea. He is in Liverpool when he meets a girl who reminds him of his step-mother. This is a story of enduring love, fanatical religious beliefs, brutality, loyalty and friendship. Once again Clare Flynn has penned a brilliant saga which I can't recommend highly enough.
Oh my word - this author never disappoints! I loved loved loved this book - the determination of the characters and the brilliant way they were brought to life made me fall in love with Will myself! The references/links to other stories and characters also made me feel as if I already knew some of them - a must read!
I loved this book even though the domestic violence and controlling behavior did make me very angry and frustrated. Of course, there is the wonderful love story which is also a big part of the book. All in all a great read.
Another great book by Clare Flynn. We meet characters from a previous story, but it can be read as a stand alone. Three women live with their strict, bible obsessed, abusive husband/dad in Liverpool. Will Kidd sails the Seven seas, leaving behind his bad memories of life in Australia. Will's ship docks in Liverpool and a chance meeting between Hannah & Will brings the past to the present. Can there be a stop to lives being destroyed? Will the lies continue? Can love conquer all?
As much of a fan as I am of Clare Flynn's books, this one was very difficult for me to get into. It was an excruciatingly slow beginning. I read more than a-third of the way onto it before it got interesting.
The stories of a merchant seaman and a young woman from Liverpool in the late '30's are told, individually, as eventually (and a very long eventually as written) their paths converge.
I understand, after now having read the entire book, the author wanting to create and develop backstories for each of these main characters, but the build-up got boring as I read on to the ultimate meeting. By the time I got to that climactic meeting it drolled on for a bit longer in spite of the impact of their paths crossing.
This seemed like it was going to finally get interesting, but from there on it raced into a fireworks of issues confronting the two that seemed a bit over the top until the grand finale ending which seemingly, in the last few pages takes a leap off a cliff!
This is unlike Flynn's previous writings and I was rather disappointed. I still mark her as one of my favorite authors all the same. Every book can't be five stars.
This story surprised me! Initially when I started reading, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was confused with Will’s convoluted family history. There are so frequent references made to his past, and I was wondering perhaps this was a sequel? But, all my insecurities changed when the author introduced Hannah. Hannah’s story-line is intense and gripping, particularly being in the clutches of her evil father. From then on, the story was gripping.
The characters are wonderful. I loved Will and Hannah as individuals, and enjoyed reading them together as well. I also loved Hannah’s relationship with Judith and Sarah. Dawson is one of the most despicable characters I have ever read, and I thought the author did a wonderful job in portraying how evil he is.
All the supporting characters like Rafqa, Nance, Sam and Bridget are very interesting as well. I loved Nance and wanted to read more of her. Moreover, I liked Will’s friendship with Paolo. One of my favorite scenes was when Will goes to meet Paolo’s family in Italy and the way they treat him. I also loved Sam’s back story and how it impacted Hannah.
Like I said, the only reason I didn’t give this book 5 stars was because it felt a bit bumpy in the beginning. However, I was engrossed reading it once Hannah and Will met. Also, Aunt Liz is a mystery character that we don’t get any resolution to. Apart from that, Storms Gather Between Us is a very nice historical, contemporary, romance novel.
This is just my type of book. Great writing, well drawn characters, enough action and description to keep the reader turning the pages or in my case clicking the Kindle.
It is a stand-alone book but if you have read A Greater World by the same author (which I have) it encompasses the characters from that book although this book is set many years later on the cusp of the outbreak of WWII. So, I’m not sure if this makes it a sequel or a follow-on and I do hope there is a third book to come.
Will Kidd has spent many years at sea thinking he doesn’t need anyone else in his life nor the love of a female, he is a typical sailor. His friendship with an Italian sailor is one of the lying undercurrents in the book and is tested at times.
Hannah lives at home with a religious, abusive zealot for a father, her mother browbeaten, her sister still quite naïve and innocent. Their homelife is spartan and austere.
Will and Hannah meet by chance with an instant attraction, surprising both of them. There are social aspects, societal conditions laid down during this time that make the book interesting, how women are treated, double standards for men.
The book contains love and hope, despair and malice, justice and the threat of war overhanging all their lives. Descriptions of life at sea, Liverpool and more exotic places are vivid and true to life.
Wow what an amazing story. Ms. Flynn has done all her usual research before she has written this book and shows very well. This book actually has some of the characters from her previous book "A Greater World ". We find out right at the first what has happened to Mr. Jack Kidd and his daughter Henrietta. We also find out a little about Elizabeth and Micheal. But mainly this story is about Mr. Kidd's son Will and Elizabeth's family left in Liverpool. I was shocked at the person Elizabeth's brother in law was, he was a overbearing, temperamental, religious fanatic that took scripture and twisted it to his own self righteous description. His wife Sarah and daughters Hannah and Judith lived in constant fear of him. A chance meeting between Will and Sarah becomes the start of a very dangerous relationship. As Will sails along the shores of Liverpool, Dublin and Africa the author gives us a beautiful picture of the different places and peoples he meets. Through Hannah and Will's eyes we see the filth of living in Liverpool in the late 1930's. This is a beautiful in depth story of two people and how they try to overcome the horrors of their past. I really enjoyed learning more about this time in history which I think may be right before WW2. I totally recommend reading this book if you enjoy a book with substance. I would like to thank the publisher for allowing me to read a free copy of this book. The above review is totally my own opinion of a very good book.
A satisfying tale of love between a young Australian, Will Kidd, fleeing from a tragic past and Bootle born Hannah, the eldest daughter of a tyrannical father. I enjoyed the romance between Will and Hannah despite it being ‘love at first sight’ as the author carefully builds up to this point. Hannah’s abusive father and the revolting pastor were a little less believable and seemed to me to belong to a different century rather than 1938 when attitudes had changed so dramatically after the First World War. That said, Storms Gather Between Us is a fast and entertaining read for those who enjoy historical romance.
I think this book is excellent and i think the author did a hreat job of with the way she keeps you on pins and nettles by the way the two lovers keep missing each other .I was sent an early copy to read and i liked it so much I stayed up late into the night to read it and I also liked it so mucn i bought my own copy today. I JUST HOPE FOR ONCE everyone will be happy. I can not wait for the next book to come out.
Although there is an underlying love story, this book comprises of a lot more than that. Other aspects including courage and hope, despite the surrounding abuse from a selection of characters with issues.
The love between Hannah and Will hit many twists and turns in the plot as they both dealt with different but difficult pasts and circumstances.
Well developed characters, great world-building and description made this very readable and I would recommend to fans of this genre.
I really enjoyed this. I was going to comment that I was disappointed that there seemed to be a whole back story that was just briefly told, but I’ve looked it up and found that this is actual book 2 of a series. The first book is A Greater World so I will look to read that soon. Will be good to learn more of the story before this one. This was still a stand alone story which I enjoyed and it is left open for a 3 story, to be set during WW2. The characters were good and narration excellent.
Will leaves his tragic past in Australia and sails the world until he reaches England and meets Hannah and instantly feels a connection. Hannah's father is a controlling man who rules his family with outdated views about the place of women in the world. A fast paced story, with a love story running through it and eventually after lots of obstacles love overcomes.
One character constantly “speaking” Italian then translates to English. Why why why? How dare the author assume that readers cannot understand even the grammatically incorrect Italian phrases she pointlessly includes in an English novel. At least the other characters were written in English, at least until I gave up. DNF
Secrets of a Charmed Life continues with Storms Gather Between Us. They are stand alone novels with a fine link between them. Book two has a few twists along the way, but not nearly as much as the first book. It’s still an enjoyable and engaging story with the possibility of a third waiting in the wings.
This book has received a Discovering Diamonds Review: Helen Hollick founder #DDRevs
"The two main characters and all the rest of the cast were well-written, and although this is the second book of a series it sat easily as a stand-alone read. "
This was a very sad story but with a happy ending. Set in the days when women were considered to be mere chattels and given no rights whatsoever, it gives a harsh background to the story. Long live emancipation, glad I didn't live in those times.
I received a free copy via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
In places this story is very dark with domestic violence as it's background. On the other hand, the romance and friendships lightens the whole story. Overall a well written enjoyable story.
This book. Same as all the others from Clare Flynn are absolutely fantastic. They all follow on to each other and make brilliant reading. I had not read any of Clare s books before. but now I am hooked.
I absolutely loved this title which, like most of Flynn's novels, combines an intensely emotional story against a perfectly drawn background. I didn't even know I liked historical romance until I found this author's books so, even if you're not a fan of the genre, you may enjoy it too.
