The class and seating order has been rearranged for the new school year!
If that doesn't sound like a big deal, cast your mind back to junior high and recollect what a big difference it made if you were sitting near friends or enemies.
There is also a new boy in class, one who seems determined to involve himself in Sawako's life. I'm not sure whether he has any genuine interest in her, or is just someone who likes to make trouble. He seems pretty selfish and conceited -- you know those guys who think because they're cute girls they don't even know should be willing to sit and listen to them talk about themselves? Sawako's girlfriends' internal monologues about this are pretty funny.
It ends sort of on a cliffhanger, so I'm ordering the next one immediately. These are quick reads.
🇬🇧 Kento Miura is the new seat neighbour of Sawako. At first I thought he was funny 'cause he acted like an idiot. Now I think that he is pretty mean and sneaky. So far, I'm still not sure if it's just to make the two main characters doubt about their relationship with each other, which also leads to drama, or if it will also become a love triangle, 'cause he somehow flirts with Sawako. Although I think it's stupid that Kento is pushing himself between Sawako and Shouta, I still have to admit that he was the only interesting thing in this volume. I mean, without him, we would not have seen this inner conflict of the two. This is something different and doesn't let the story to a stop.
Since I liked how the story takes a different direction — more into the drama and inner conflicts of the two main characters, I give this volume 4 stars.
Hmm probably my least favorite volume so far BECAUSE JUST HURRY UP AND TALK TO ONE ANOTHER ALREADY! *laughs*
I was pretty disappointed in Kazehaya though. Not sure why he asked Sawako what he did, but I was really bummed that he did so. I'm glad he DID realize later how he put unnecessary stress on Sawako.
Kento is sweet, buttttt GET AWAY FROM MY SHIP!!
Yay for Pin saving the day though! I liked him more in this one and he came across as cool. :)
I'm LOVING this series! It started with the anime (finished season 1) so I just devoured whatever volumes of this manga I could find. It's nothing new--a meet-cute set in highschool--but you end up caring for the characters, especially the two leads Sawako and Kazehaya. :) LOVE LOVE LOVE them. The supporting characters with their own quirks are loads of fun too :)
Sometimes you need a bit of angst and yearning in your life. While the miscommunication/ lack of communication is driving me crazy, this one is definitely picking up! I’m excited to see where it goes!
And the miscommunication begins.... -_- They really should just talk to each other. It would clear up so many problems. There is another character that is introduced in this one. I found him overly pushy and nosy.
Omg I’m so ANNOYED! Why are they overthinking this?!? Just tell each other how you feel!!! And idk what Kento is doing.. He’s just randomly starting shit
Wow, a quick read full of misunderstandings galore!
With our official introduction to Kent/Kento Miura, we not only get a possible love-rival for Kazehaya, but we also get thrown into a whirl of different emotions and thoughts from our two main characters.
At this point, we, the readers, already know how they feel about each other, and thus should also feel frustrated that they won't just admit it already and get together as a couple. But, as Ayane and Chizu discuss, it's not as easy as that (yeah, it never is, is it?) because on the one hand, trying to get involved and push things forward isn't a good move because forced emotions aren't good emotions and things like love need to happen naturally, and on the other hand, right now Kazehaya and Sawako are at different places emotionally. He's unsure what to think of her, nervous to go forward and push her out of her comfort zone and yet at the same time he wants very much to be special to her. As for Sawako, she's been a social outcast for so long that she's completely clueless on how to read people around her, and feels very inferior to Kazehaya, whom she's already put up on a pedestal of sorts. He insists that he's just a normal guy, but because he's the first one to acknowledge her, Sawako sees him more as her ideal at this point than as normal, and thus feels inferior. It's a complicated place to be in, especially since you can't force someone to be more confident--it's been tried and failed too many times to count, even in fiction.
Not that it stops Kent from taking his best shot, though. Keep moving the plot forward, m'man!
The emphasis on volume 8 and 9 are squarely on Sawako and Kazehara (I find it fascinating that Sawako is known by her first name to everyone, unless they use the nickname, but Shouta Kazehara only seems to be called this by Pin and Ryu..., even though he is the ultimate popular fun guy of the class).
The whole manga is very much centered on the girls, with or without their love troubles, so I enjoyed getting to see Kazehara get SEVERELY frustrated, annoyed and talking his own position out. I think it is a strength of the mangaka that it has been clear from the first volume that Kazehara is slowly falling in love with Sawako, all by himself (with most the class oblivious).
Sawako gets more and more integrated into the class outside of her firm friendships, which is a pleasure to watch, but also part of the plot twist to come.
That girl-crazy Kento becomes aware of Sawako's cuteness in her actions towards Kazehara (and from pity to interest, to falling in love with her himself at that) and actually interprets the situation the way that MOST of the school would: poor unpopular girl falls for kind popular guy who is too kind to be harsh towards her feelings and only pities her - that was a stroke of genius. It forces Sawako to examine her feelings towards Kazehara even more, even as the set-up of a huge (understandable) misunderstanding is being built carefully by the mangaka.

Guh!!!! Why why why????? Okay, there's a new guy in town and for some reason he has taken and interest in Sawako. He's constantly touching her and talking to her and making Kazehaya jealous. And Kazehaya goes and confesses (more or less) to Sawako that he wants to be the closest of all the boys to Sawako and then practically runs out of the room on her before she can think of a suitable answer.
And the new guy is starting to run interference and giving the two of them false information to try and keep them from getting together because he's interested in Sawako. (He almost appears to be grooming her when he's trying to 'help' her become more friendly) And there are more misunderstandings. But these ones are annoying, not cute or interesting. GUH!!!!
In conclusion
This volume was aggravating. Not that that's a terrible thing. It just irks me that there are more people out there in this false world Karuo Shiina has made who are purposely putting a wedge between 2 nice people who like each other!!! I must acquire the other volumes!!!!

This manga series follows a girl called Kuronuma and she has the looks that would be perfect for a ghost in a horror movie, but everyone has her misunderstood. Through her friendship with the popular boy in class, Kazehaya, her classmates start to realise that she's not this feared figure that she is thought to be. Kuronuma has just realised her feelings for Kazehaya and is learning to deal with them and still maintain the friendship that she has with Kazehaya.
In this volume you see a 'love rival' for Kazehaya for Kuronuma. I quoted the word love rival because Kento is more so causing trouble for the main couple then actively trying to be with Kuronuma. I absolutely love seeing a jealous Kazehaya. The only annoying thing about Kazehaya being jealous is that he feels like he can't voice his concerns to Kuronuma because he feels like she can't handle it. I wish that he would just tell her, but then the series would be a lot shorter if he did that.
I love this series, and I would recommend everybody to read it!
Sooo much frustration in this volume. But Ayane said it best, both Kazehaya & Sawako need to do this on their own (even though it's soooo frustrating seeing them struggling with their emotions and thoughts, I will be exactly like Chizu and wouldn't be able to hold back and just expose everything. Also, the fact that Chizu just realised Kazehaya likes Sawako is funny and frustrating (in another way) at the same time). Also, Kazehaya needs to calm down and give chance to Sawako to speak her mind too, not just him saying something to her, then leave after giving too short time for her to reply. He of all people should know how Sawako needs more time than other people to process her thoughts and emotions. And Kento (the one I thought is going to be Kazehaya's rival but turned out to be just a busybody) needs to stay out of all this, seriously, I hope Ayane said something more to him. Ayane is the best! I wished I had a female friend like her.
I appreaciate that this is becoming a coming-of-age story for our main male protagonist as well as for Sadako. We at first see him through her eyes, with all her admiration that excuses his (at times) selfish behaviour, but he's coming to understand more and more that he too has to work on his character, on his short temper and egotistical desires (and Sawako starts noticing this too).
It's great to see that even their close friends understand that the two main characters need to grow before they can be ready to become a couple: it's a refreshing concept to read in a manga.
I didn't instead enjoy the use of the "you two are too different to be a good fit for each other" trope again, but I guess it's realistic at that age.

In the next volume Sawako's friends Ayane and Chizu are pushing for Sawako to express her feelings more to Kazehaya. They also talk to Kazehaya about being more upfront with Sawako so there's no confusion on their feelings between one another. But when Kento sets his sights on Sawako that makes things even more complicated. Kazehaya starts getting jealous when Sawako starts talking more to Kento and thinks he may no longer be the closest boy to her. But it's still not enough for him to confess his feelings fearing he will scare Sawako away. It's getting harder for Kazehaya to hold his feelings back as the days go by. If he doesn't confess how he feels soon will he lose his chance with Sawako? Is it worth risking the relationship progress that they have made if she doesn't feel the same?
This volume makes me happy because finally Sawako gets to experience a "night-out" with her friends on a Saturday night. For a girl like Sawako who has been bullied and has no friends because of her name and the rumors surrounding her, this night would be momentous for her.
Aaaaand, not to forget a moment with Kazehaya who is trying hard to make some "moves" plus the duo of Chizu and Yano who is starting to notice Kazehaya and Sawako's admiration for one another thus the teasing! Aaaah this is going to be fun!
