I usually don't read Isekai type manga, but someone on Instagram recommended this and the Plot sounded so intriguing. We follow a young woman named Ruri, who has lead a difficult and lonely life. She grew up with a girl named Asahi who is beloved by all, and who sticks to Ruri like glue. Ruri is instantly blamed if anything goes wrong for Asahi or if she becomes upset. No matter how hard Ruri works, every advantage is awarded to Asahi!
A strange thing happens when the girls are summoned to another world to fulfill the prophesy of the "Priestess Princess". Of course they assume it's Asahi, and toss Ruri, alone, into the woods. Lot's of unexpected adventures begin. I can't wait to see what Ruri get's up to next! Engaging story, interesting characters, good world building, and wonderful artwork = recommended!
While it's true that this manga does have fairly typical tropes yet again for an isekai fantasy read, there's something incredibly charming about the main character, cozy about the world (the fairies mostly!) and the simmering plot (that first meeting moment!). I'm very much looking forward to picking up the next volume!
Ruri can't seem to catch a break in life. Ever since she was little, a girl named Asahi has been there to thwart her intentionally at every corner. When he is unexpectedly pulled into another universe with Asahi, Ruri is quickly on the bad side of everyone in the kingdom, and goes out into the country on her own. When she meets an older woman named Chelsie, she starts to discover that she actually has great magical powers, and wants revenge on the kingdom. This is her story. I love the innocence and joy that we see from Ruri. The way that the Faeries continually take her side in things and fawn over her is a lot of fun, and the art is super cute! I am so excited to keep going with this one!
So this was a cute little isekai book. The artwork was beautiful, the plot was engaging (even though it was a little bit cliché, but I think that was the point). I also think Ruri turning into a cat is adorable! There was a lot of humor in here as well, and I think that people would enjoy this shojo fantasy series if they were to give it a chance. But yes, I thought this was a cute, and charming story. Not memorable at the moment, but that might change once I read the second volume and bonus points that there were fairies in here!
This could have been an illustrated grocery list, and I still would have given it a good rating because...just look at Aki’s art! But as a story - um, I am a little disappointed. Where is the promise of the title? Where is the scheming for revenge as a cat from the dragon king’s lap? I wanted it so bad! Alas, onward we go to volume 2 after an exposition-heavy first volume of yet another isekai series based off light novels...
This review will be for the whole series; read at your own risk!
Read 3 volumes
My love for lady isekai stories strikes again! We follow a sweet girl who’s been blamed for everything her idiot “friend” does wrong. I really liked Ruri and how she grows and tries to be a better person. I find the magic interesting and I like how the fairy’s are more trouble than good sometimes! I am very much looking forward to reading more!
This is too cute. And the fairies are so adorable and sweet and a little vengeful when you mess with their favorite person. I like that Ruri is rather innocent in her way, and is just happy to be free from that clingy friend. She's going to live her best life, and what's better than being a pampered cat. Honestly all the characters in her are fun to read with some hilarious personalities.
The White Cat’s Revenge as Plotted from the Dragon King’s Lap Vol. 1 is a delightful shoujo isekai set in a fascinating world with room to grow in the upcoming volumes. The first volume is solid and introduces an incredibly relatable and likable heroine in the character of Ruri, a girl with a lot of potential and this series’ titular white cat. This is a definitely a series to keep up with, especially if you’ve been craving an english-language shoujo isekai with a likable heroine and a charming plot filled with magic in a pseudo-european world.
So Ruri has a childhood friend(?), Asahi, who seems like she gets by on life by manipulating people into doing what she wants. Ruri has a doll? Asahi wants it. Ruri has a friend? Asahi wants to be the better one. Ruri's unique hair color? Asahi dyes her hair. All her life Ruri has lived under the thumb of this tyrannical friend, and when she gets an opportunity to move away to college, she purposely chooses one that Asahi can't get into just to get away from her friend. Lo and behold, Asahi follows her. So it's no surprise to anyone familiar with anime and manga isekai plotlines that when a portal opens and sucks Ruri in, Asahi follows and proceeds to wrap the entire kingdom around her finger. Ruri gets ousted and exiled, and finds her way to the demihuman kingdom instead. There, she learns about her strong connection to fairies and the burden her power can be.
If there's a lack of any sort of cat description here, it's because aside from near the end of this first volume, there's a distinct lack of the cat I was promised. I get the worldbuilding and necessity, but considering the title prominently features "cat", I was expecting more cat in my story. The artwork, however, is gorgeous, and the story that is being told is cute, if a bit shallow for what I normally read for.
I'm going to give this series another volume or two to see if we get more cat in the "cat" story, but for the time being I'll go with "cautiously optimistic" on my opinion of this series.
There are like three major subplots going on JUST in the first book! 1. Main character has a "best friend" who is more of a clinger-on and has been for their entire lives, even to where if she protests, she is told that she is imagining things, and when she is Isekai-ed, so is the friend (figures!) 2. Both "friends" are treated as Saints there to rescue the country from harm, although Ruri (the main character) manages to escape to a different country, where she is ALSO treated as a Special One. 3. Also Ruri becomes a cat.
Sounds convoluted?? But somehow, I'm really drawn in to the story and want to know how it turns out... or even if she ever tells the cat-loving king that she's actually a human... I just always feel bad for the protagonists with pushy friends...
(repost since I apparently put it on the wrong book somehow)
Ruri has had a pretty hard life. Her blonde hair and blue eyes have brought her lots of attention, especially from an annoying girl named Asahi. Everyone LOVES Asahi, and Ruri always gets in trouble for Asahi’s whims. Ruri is determined to go to college and leave Asahi firmly behind her, when it turns out Asahi has gotten into a neighboring college and rented an apartment in Ruri’s building! One day, the two ladies and a few other “friends” are walking to school, and they get pulled into another world. Ruri is incensed - she can’t even get kidnapped away from Asahi! Everyone thinks Asahi is the prophesied Priestess Princess, and it’s more of the same in this new world - up until they throw Ruri out into the forest for some sort of “treason” against Asahi. Ruri picks her way along the forest until she happens upon the hut of Chelsie, an “old hag” who teaches Ruri more about this world. Ruri has much to learn, but she also wants revenge on those who treated her poorly.
Another entry in a crowded field of Isekai, this story is immensely cute and has some really great pacing. We start off with Ruri already in the Dragon King’s lap, and the rest of this volume starts to explain how she got there. By the end of the volume, she still isn’t back to where she was in the beginning, but the little stories and adventures Ruri has throughout are satisfying and interesting. The fairies are super cute and all over the story. Even Ruri’s initial plans for revenge are pretty adorable. There is also a good amount of explanation balanced with actually “showing” us how the world works through the illustrations and the characters Ruri meets.
The artwork in this story is pretty adorable and fairly detailed. Ruri’s dress is beautifully drawn with some great little details, like the lace coming out from the bottom and the bodice work. Most of the people and creatures have cute details that make them visually pleasing and not very terrifying, except for the first look at the wild boar that chases Ruri. Aside from that moment, there's nothing in this first volume that would be too elevated or inappropriate for younger audiences.
The art is stunning; it’s part of what drew me to this manga initially. The story itself is, thus far, nothing too entirely original though it is executed in an elegant yet still comical way. If you’re a fan of The Early and the Fairy, Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, or The Savior’s Book Café Story in Another World, then I highly recommend The White Cat’s Revenge as Plotted from the Dragon King’s Lap. Thus far, they all carry similar energies and all have a similar pace for their story and how it develops in odd directions. In terms of this story, I actually wondered for quite some time where the story was trying to go, and how it made sense in accordance with the title. However, by the end of this volume, things begin to make sense, and I’ve begun to fall in love with the Dragon King… as I hope Ruri will. As of right now, I’m not really sure what to expect of this story and the future it promises to tell.
Very cute and very funny! The fairies are easily some of my favourite characters. Ruri herself is entertaining to follow too - I really like her attitude. Even the occasional over-the-top reaction from her isn't at all annoying because it's done in moderation. And Asahi just makes me seethe with rage. My only gripe is Ruri's lack of revenge and active negativity towards those who wronged her... But then again, I can understand her lack of need to get said revenge (and I might possibly be a little too influenced from binge-reading manhwas whose plotline focus on that very theme haha).
Super cute! The art style, plot, and characters were fun to follow, and I hope that trend continues through the rest of the series. I particularly enjoyed the art for the fairies (SO adorable!!). Ruri is an interesting character, and I appreciate her resilience and perseverance. Her dynamic with Asahi has the potential to be either entirely innocent or deceptively malicious, and I'm curious to see which route the author chooses.
If this series ends well, I look forward to reading more works by this author!
Very fun read. Dragons, magic and many fairies. It is a bit weird however how this prince introduced quite late seems to have no interest in marrying anyone even though he's practically yelled at by his advisers to do so. Then he finds our protagonist being chased by thieves, she rescues herself. He then touches her hair and is charmed by it I guess. She flees. He goes home and tells his advisers he saw a girl he would like to speak more to. They then take it upon themselves to go hunt her down. Okay... Cool.
All Ruri Midorikawa wanted out of college life was an escape from the shadow of her best “frenemy,” Asahi Shinomiya. Despite her best intentions, Asahi has always made Ruri’s life miserable… so it’s no surprise things go sideways when the two of them are summoned to another world together!
Now alone in a completely unfamiliar world and betrayed by the only people she thought she could depend on, our hot-headed heroine swears vengeance…
Ruri, the heroine, is neither a door mat or a villain, but a sweet and a bit snarky. Chelsie, the main supporting character in this volume, is fun and nice, someone you don't mind hanging out with. This volume is mostly setting and world building, giving you a basis for the rest of the story. An appetizer, if you will.
This is an almost perfect adaptation of the novel. The art is exactly how I pictured the characters to look and although there are some minor differences, the story is mostly following the source material faithfully. For novel readers, it's a fresh version to enjoy and for new ones, it will definitely pique interest in the novel. I highly recommend this!
Read till Ch. 17. A cute fluffy manga with some very pretty art, I especially love the cat scenes, but gets a little boring sometimes with the cliche parts of the plot, which even the heroine is tired of 😂
This was a fun start to a series that could go in a number of different directions. I'm excited to see which the author chooses, but for now I'm enjoying the gorgeous art, the lovable lead, and the humor.
I tend to avoid isekai [mostly because I'm not a gamer and also I rather like my job] but will read anything even remotely featuring a Water God or a Dragon King, and in this case lucked out with a feel-good charmer with a message I can get behind. It's true, humans do suck.
The beginning was a rough start because I felt unsure where it was heading. I was unsure if the main character was good, but she has an endearing personality. I am pretty invested with the series now.
