"When you can't trust your own mind..."
“If you want me to save some of your people and relocate them to a new colony I will, but in return you come to my planet with me, you stay with me for the duration of this affair, forsaking all of your family and friends. Then one day, when this has run its course, I will return you to your kind, unharmed but not untouched.”
Amber wakes up after a crash landing to find herself on a hostile planet with a "man" beside her that "shifts" into into a demon warrior whilst protecting her against the wild creatures they run into.
She can't remember him, nor can she remember the end of Earth and how she came to be in a new solar system with an alien who her claims they are lovers. Even though she is wildly attracted to him, something feels amiss, especially his recount of how they came to be together after Earth's ending, and why they can't immediately return to his home planet where he rules as the Monarch's son.
As their adventure continues, Amber is hurtled into worlds that both stun and defy her imagination. Her continued flashbacks of another lover, the mystery surrounding her departure from Earth and how she came to be the coveted spouse and Princess on his planet called Throm are slowly revealed to her along with the terrifying choices she has made to survive after Earth ended.
What horrors caused her to lose her memory and what role did Wrexel play in her spiral? Most of all who does she love, who can she trust and will the return of her memory be any comfort at all?
Who should read this book? This is a hybrid series: It has everything paranormal romance readers love: with a handsome alien monarchy who shift into demon warriors when attacked AND It has everything that fantasy readers love - New Kingdoms and New Worlds with magic and sorcery. It's packed with adventure and intrigue in every chapter and contains lots of romance & simmering sex too. It takes the reader on a wild ride from a hostile foreign planet with savage creatures to a new kingdom filled with intrigue and mystery.
This is a kindle e-book that I received through a Goodreads Giveaway. I loved it. I was immediately immersed in the characters, the worlds, and the storyline. It includes science fiction, fantasy, paranormal romance, sorcery, murder, alien skirmishes, and so much more. There are some steamy scenes so be aware of that going into the book. Canada Jackson was able to describe the worlds I visited in this book in such a way that I could see the grasses, the four moons, the asteroid, the aliens and more. She did this in a way that supported the storyline and did not detract from it. The main characters are fascinating, but not always likeable. There were internal, external and relationship struggles as well as considerable character growth for the main character. This is the first book that I have read by Canada Jackson, but it won't be the last one.
A gothic bodice ripper disguised as science fiction.
I started reading this because I won an ARC of the second book of the series, which I will not read. A woman comes to awareness in the possession (there is no other word for it) of a hyper-masculine person who will not fill in her missing memories because he claims she needs to recover them on her own. Oh, but he is willing to have hot, unbridled sex with her. I don't need to read Canada Jackson's erotic fantasies. I can create my own. And they do not involve submission to an ultra-powerful male who does things for my own good. Nuh-uh. Gimme some "dad bod" Thor.
Btw, I am sure there is some galaxy saving reason for this man's behavior, but I don't want to wade through all the patriarchal nonsense to get there.
I understand why the author had the ending start at the beginning but it made the book drag for me. Also, what the Thrombians did to Earth - no reason why that wasn't awful, no reason at all. I can't get over it and I can't imagine Amber getting over it so easily.
Started out great. Should never have gone backward in time for so long. I ended up skipping pages. The ending was lackluster and we were left with an incomplete finish.
If you are looking for a fun, not so serious, romantic read this book is it for you. While it wasn't written the best, it was still enjoyable, something I wasn't expecting to be honest! This book has a lot going on, but in a good way. There really is something for everyone: fantasy, sci-fi, romance, action, thriller, you name it and it's in this book. And like I said, it is all over the place and messy, but there was something about this book that really drew me in. Maybe it was the fact that it certainly won't bore you, you will possibly roll your eyes a few times and also be invested in characters and enchanted with steamy love scenes, but it certainly won't bore you. I'm very curious to see if this series will continue. I enjoyed it, but I could also see a lot of people not being a big fan!
I've been in a reading desert for the last few weeks nothing I attempted to read, grabbed me as I hoped, when I read their blurb, came across this as a free in free kindle reads and hoped the blurb lived up to the hype, and boy did it! Times 10, really glad I found this author, will be continuing this series for sure!
This story had such an interesting storyline that I really enjoyed it. The main characters Amber; Wrexel; Staede; Shihlo; & Whyle all had interconnecting parts, but they all revolved around Amber. None of the men knew about love, yet they all developed feelings for Amber so much so til they sometimes fought over her.
I was caught up in this story and did not want to put it down. I loved the characters, who showed both vulnerability and strength. If you want to read a book that has a bit of everything, action, sci fi, fantasy, cheekiness and love interest, then this is the book for you.
Amber was truly saved from from being with Travis and her dad was a turd. The sequence of the Parts was frustrating at first but it really made the book more interesting. W was the brooding love interest and hot alien.
It feels like I have read two books at once, and I can’t really tell if that is a bad or a good thing. My mind is reeling after the complex and secretive adventure Amnesia put me through and while some of the adventure was much enjoyed, it also at times felt like a too long journey on a straight and boring road.
What has really stuck with me is the beginning of the book, when the biggest struggle was Amber’s Amnesia and her confusion over who Wrexel was to her as well as all the other men she found out about. The unknown information of what all the men meant to her made me fear that the book was going to turn into a reversed harem. Luckily I needn’t had worried since this was cleared up later on. Either way, the different lovers bomb that was dropped and kept mysteriously vague was very cleverly written into catching my attention and pulling me in to the story right away. The complications and her fear and confusion over who she was, where she was and what she found herself in the middle of built the story and her personality, as well as mysterious and overly protective Wrexel’s personality, beautifully. Their rocky but thrilling relationship and vague revelations from her missing memory kept me on my toes with my nose glued to the pages ... until she finally remembered.
It was like suddenly reading a completely different book. Instead of following Amber and Wrexel working things out we were thrown back to the beginning to when they met and the story started developing from there and ending with present time just after she gotten her memories back. There is of course nothing wrong with the book written this way. As a matter of fact I found it imaginative and unique in a way. However, the reason for it feeling like I read another book is because that spark, drama and thrill I felt when reading it was suddenly gone. The main focus before that was their relationship and current struggles. Now the story was suddenly crammed with politics, war and culture. It couldn’t find any interest in any of it and neither in the relationship.
Amber and Wrexel felt like different people all of a sudden. Amber being a Mary Sue disguised as a damsel in constant distress, crying, fainting and the whole shebang. Wrexel gave little to no emotion other than lust, anger or indifference. Both personalities fell flat and therefore so did the romance. Their relationship was all about lust and sex which, considering their agreement, was not that out of order in the beginning. However I never felt like it really developed to much else throughout the story no matter what was said and done. This was most likely thanks to the one dimensional personalities. The book was more driven by the politics and incidents surrounding that rather than characterization and romance. This was really too bad with such a good start to the book.
This might be a personal preference, but I believe the story would have been much more enjoyable and better put together if the past had been mixed in with the present in the form of flashbacks throughout the story, focusing more on the present. While still learning what happened in a controlled and built up way through the flashbacks we also would have gotten a much more developed relationship between them, with them having to work out what happened, the betrayal and their feelings. The ending, where we readers finally knew what had happened haven’t become so rushed with them both instantly okay with everything and resolving it almost by chance. Even better, since this book was so long, might have been to make it into two books instead of one and not having to cram so much of the political information, plot twists and all other aspect into one book.
I honestly wish so much that I had loved this book since it had such a compelling start, complex world and original plot. At the beginning I only had one complaint and that was the unfitting exclamation points. I had hoped that that was all I would have to complain about, but it just kept piling up. Still, it was an enjoyable read and I will give the next installment a chance sometime in the future.
All right let's talk about Amnesia by Canada Jackson...
We have a little bit of everything in this book from paranormal romance, to sci-fi, to a little bit of fantasy and adventure tropes thrown in for fun. The world building in this tale was also top notch, it is clear that Jackson (like most writers) has dreamed of this location and knows every back alley, mountain, and speck of dust that could potentially collect on the surface of this world. This should have been a home run of a story for me but there was something off.
That something came in a couple of forms. The first being that yes, the book is called 'Amnesia' and I knew what I was getting into but it also felt a little too convenient at times. I think this is more my own issues with this concept in literature; being able to create a vessel for the author to use as a way to explain main ideas and world-building elements rather than to show them. It is okay in small amounts but after a while, it just got a little much for me.
The larger issue has to do with the editing of this book. I think Jackson has a great sense of story but whoever was her editor really needed to help reel in some of the ideas. Changing point of view multiple times per page is really problematic and led to sections of the book feeling jarring and disjointed. I think that if Jackson and the editor had worked together to rewrite these scenes from one point of view that they would have really shined.
In the end, I gave this book a 3 for even though I spotted issues with the editing and a little bit with some of the tropes that do not mean it is not an entertaining read. I am notoriously picky about books and certain ideas around the narrative structure so what made me fidget while reading might not bother another reader at all.
If you want a quick, entertaining ride, I suggest trying Amnesia out.
I won a copy of this book in a goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review.
Overall, it's an easy, fun read and I enjoyed it, but there were some parts that got a bit of an eye roll. The two parts that weren't my cup of tea were 1. the whole possessive/captive relationship (which I know, is a big part of this book) 2. Amber was kind of annoying at times. She spends a lot of the story being a bit of a damsel in distress that has a bunch of dudes being overprotective around her and she cried a lot. I know there's more books in this series and hopefully she's a little more well developed, because I think there's some potentially really interesting things about her. Despite all of that, there was something about this book that made me want to know what would happen next, so I actually read through it faster than I thought it would (it's almost 600 pgs!). I liked the overall story that was going on outside of the romance. I'm curious to check out the next book in the series to hopefully explore more of the world/characters. I'd recommend!
This review is of the writing, not a rehash of the publishers blurb.
The flow to this was fairly smooth. I liked the way the author staged the story and did not find it difficult to follow.
I don't feel that the characters are all that well rounded, but at least they are not flat.... I was not impressed by the female lead. I think the author was going for naive, but sweet and I think she came out as a door mat with little common sense.
Overall, the story could have been written without the sex and shoved into the YA category.
I may read the next in the series, if it is cheap enough.
I enjoyed this book. It was different in that you start in the present time and then get bounced back to learn what all has transpired previously. The characters are well thought out. There is sex, but it’s hard to find a love story nowadays that doesn’t contain it. I like the dynamics between the brothers. I have already began reading The Adrsta Chronicles #2. Happy reading.
I really liked the beginning of this story. I liked the characters at first, but eventually Amber became too irritating and I had to quit. Can't see her nose in front of her face and continually making her life contentious. I just couldn't take anymore. Wrexel was great though. Good character.
I have to admit to being sceptical when I chose Amnesia to read; but I was pleasantly surprised. I found myself unable to put it down and really enjoyed the evolving story ... I’m in need now to know the rest. Great read and I would thoroughly recommend it.
A huge asteroid is on a collision course with Earth. An alien race steps in to rescue humans from extinction. This is not the first time all life on Earth has been threatened or rescued. The humans are taken to one of 8 planets in a solar system populated by the previous human populations.
Wrexel! Oh my. You'll go from loving him to hating him so many times throughout the book you'll lose count. I was really surprised by this book. I expected the normal alien smut but the exquisite and original worldbuilding and intricate storyline really got me. I recommend the whole series!
I'd bitch about how I hate cliffhangers but this took nine hours to read so obviously wouldn't fly as one volume. There is resolution of the main problem, however, so it was a natural place to pause.
Really disappointed at the editing misses, though. "En route" is never "on route," and that mistake was made repeatedly. Other things made me wince, as well, like "passed" for "past" ("she went 'passed' him" really astounded me...) Would have rated higher if not for the editing misses that kept jerking me out of the story.
