My second favorite Hashira makes her cover debut in this volume! Mitsuri, the Love Pillar, a young woman gifted with a fine and strong body from birth and born to slay demons.

If you know who you are then no demon can run when you bring down a blade that knows no hesitation or confusion.

Our heroes were already struggling to deal with six demons and now we got a seventh one to fight against. This one seems to be the most dangerous one. Can the heroes stop all of their opponents and kill them before they will the ones to die?

Helping other people also ends up being beneficial for you. And people are living creatures who can draw out unbelievable strength for someone else's sake, Muichiro.

I'm not a fan of Muichiro, but I liked how the tables have turned for him. He was a guy who considered everything as either low priority or high priority and acted accordingly to it (but most of the time he was spacing out, struggling to remember what he was thinking about in the first place). The events happening in the Swordsmiths Village were truly eye-opening for him. I was happy to see him acting like a hero he always should be, thinking of the wellbeing of the innocents and acting accordingly to that. People say that if you act with kindness, that kindness will come back to you and Muichiro was blessed with that. I liked how he and Kotetsu saved one another, it was a great change from the very beginning of the Swordsmiths Village act.

We also got a Muichiro flashback which I already knew as the anime watcher, but I never realized the parallels between Muichiro and Shinobu. Both of them had siblings that are now gone and both of them took some of their siblings personality traits. The younger Shinobu was more serious and angry while the older Shinobu was more kind and nice, like her sister. The younger Muichiro was a compassionate one, wanting to help other people while his brother, Yuichiro, was more reluctant and passive one, trying to stay away from any kind of trouble until he had no other choice. The older Muichiro lived through that mentality until he realized how different it is from his child self.

When we're on the Tokito brothers topic, anyone knows this trend on social media:
"I want to save everyone!"
"I want to save you!" ??
It's perfect for these twins. Muichiro was the one who wanted to save other people, while all Yuichiro ever cared for was the wellbeing of his twin. Muichiro was all he had been left after what had happened to their parents and he sacrificed everything to save him :(

'Boy. I'm worried about you. Will anyone ever understand? Understand you. How much you've gone through.' [Tetsuido]
'Tetsuido, I'm sorry. I made you worry. But now I am fine.'
[Muichiro]

I don't think I ever mentioned that, but since we have great examples of it here, I will do it now. I love the bond that the author had created between the demon slayer and his swordsmith. It can be seen through the small scene of Muichiro mentioning Tetsuido, his swordsman while Tanjiro's swordsman, Haganezuka, was sacrificing all of his blood, sweat and tears to make a perfect sword for Tanjiro. It was all so heartwarming.

P.S. I never realized how hot Haganezuka is?! Damn! 😳

"I will never let any of my friends die! The demon hunters are my precious home." [Mitsuri]

Let's not forget about the other Hashira, Kanroji Mitsuri, that also fights on our side! I never expressed how awesome she is, so let me do this now! She's the definition of a badass woman. She's nice, kind-hearted and adorable by nature, but would punch you without hesitation if you hurt any of her friends. She's incredibly strong, fast and flexible, looking like a ballerina while giving her all in the battle. It's such a pleasure to see her fight! And I love the bond she already has with the other heroes. The moment Genya and the Kamado siblings rushed to protect her was so heartwarming!

"Only a bear or a boar or a steer would marry you. Your hair's a funny color. The idea of passing that on to children gives one shivers."

First of all, rude!! I can't believe that there was a guy who rejected such a woman like Kanroji Mitsuri! Did he left his brain and his eyes at home when he left to see her?! It's your loss, asshole! 😡

Second of all, I don't know how I should feel about Mitsuri being the only one without any loss in her life that made her choose the path of a demon slayer. Her reason was to find a man to marry, and that's okay, but did she really need to become a demon slayer to find a partner?? Her not experiencing any loss doesn't strip her character from the depth, no. She's fighting to protect the people she has grown to care for and that's fine. I just think that, because of the lack of loss in her life there is a big wall between her and the other Hashiras. Everyone else experienced a tragedy that had an impact on their characters, while all Mitsuri went through was a rejection of a stupid guy who saw a nobody in her when he should see a goddess.

But hey, whatever her reason to fight is, I'm glad that she's on our side. She's a true powerhouse that should never be underestimated!

"You! Get back here! Don't run from your responsibility! From the sins you've committed! From all your evil deeds! I'm gonna make you take responsibility for them all!" [Tanjiro]

While Muichiro was occupied with his opponent (Upper Rank 5) and Mitsuri was fighting the manifestation of a dragon, Genya and the Kamado siblings were on a desperate pursue after the real Upper Rank four, a little demon coward who's giving its all trying to escape as far away as possible. Both Tanjiro and Genya tried to cut his head down, but didn't succeed, will they be more lucky next time? We will see in the next volume! ☺️

Muichiro’s backstory is heartbreaking, but so well written. I also love his banter with Gyokko during their fight. It’s so entertaining.

But I’ll forever be annoyed by Mitsuri’s backstory. Most of the characters have these heartbreaking backgrounds that motivate them to fight… and then Mitsuri’s backstory is just boring. I’m a bit disappointed that she didn’t get a better backstory.

Mist form and Love form. Fascinating backstories, but not quite as good as the ones we’ve already seen.

BUT, Mist form makes me ask many new questions about Sun form, so that’s pretty awesome.

I must bide my time. Fortunately, we’ve got some kick ass battles going on right now. :)

Lord Muichiro Tokito uses his sword skills and emotionless face on the ongoing fight against his evolving demon foe, while we learn of his backstory. We also see lighthearted Mitsuri show her brave side and her fighting skills, while learning how she hid her strong physique as a child. A (100%/Outstanding)

Holy SHIT, this volume was awesome! I know I've been saying that a lot lately (especially with this particular series) but holy flying FUCKER FUCK, this was volume rocked!

Tokito is officially awesome and I FUCKING ADORE HIM! His character development in this volume was inspiring, though his backstory was heartbreaking. Interesting that Tokito never showed much emotion before, but the driving force behind his strength in his fight was rage, a powerful tool when wielded properly. I loved his roasting match with Gyokko as well as his completely stoic face after Gyokko's final transformation. Seriously, Tokito has sky-rocketed into my favorites list, I SURE HOPE HE MAKES IT OUT ALIVE IN THE END!!!!...Sorry, I just have some trust issues due to an unexpected death earlier on in the series.

But wait, there's more! We didn't get just ONE badass Hashira moment, we got TWO! Kanroji's backstory kind of broke my heart with how relatable it was, but my absolute fucking favorite part was this line from the Master:

"Be proud of your strength! Those who speak ill of you fear your talent...and are merely envious!"

SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!!! Kanroji is an incredibly strong, incredibly talented young lady who was looked down by others (specifically men) for her more "masculine" tendencies and unconventional appearance, but it was the Demon Corps where she found a group of people who ADMIRED her strength and weren't ashamed to express their admiration for her. It's a subtle way of showing how society tends to dismiss useful attributes in a woman (strength and vitality) while focusing on useless attributes (physical appearance), but the Demon Corps cares more for the former rather than the latter (because, you know, looks can't kill demons). And it's no small wonder Genya, Tanjiro, and Nezuko were so determined to protect her, she's the only one able to give this demon a run for his money! (That and they just generally care for her, too).

Damn, this was an excellent volume and I had an absolute BLAST reading it! I'm so curious to see where this arc goes, I'm hoping my pre-order for volume 15 arrives on time. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Sloppy is the best way I can describe it. I’m getting tired of the bad and on-the-nose writing. A few examples of writing that bothers me:

“My lungs hurt... from all the water in them.”
“He cut them all” and “He spun and deflected all of it”
“No impossible! I don’t believe it! What an incredible turn of events” and “This was indeed an incredible turn of events”
“It’s extremely vexing! Because of this girl I can’t send a beast after those kids! How infuriating!”

All of the above is just unnecessary information that should be obvious just looking at the art. It only serves as an interruption of the flow that the action scenes could have had.

Also, the breathing techniques are getting ridiculous. Now we have “Love breathing, catlove shower” and “catlegged winds of love”. Seriously? What does that even mean?

So yeah, I’m tired of Demon Slayer. Sue me.

A volume where the story and characterisation work hits it out of the park. While there is a standard set up of flash backs to flesh out characters, they are well-written enough to not feel repetitive. The combat scenes are also excellent.

As a slight aside, I see comparisons around the treatment of “demons” in Demon Slayer and Frieren. To the extent that they are even the “same” entities between these fictional universes, the portrayal of them in Frieren is ostensibly more Manichean.

I suspect an element of this misreading is deliberate, especially as Frieren is often repurposed for… …extremely uncomfortable allusions to white supremacy:

Apparently she’s a "faith penitent" whenever someone calls them on it

…but it is likely also a failure of reading comprehension.

Your whole being is twisted!
And I can’t forgive that!

Gyokko and Hantengu being relatively unsympathetic makes it more obvious, but Demon Slayer is very clear that the Demons need to be slayed.

I accept there is a complicated theology in the Demon Slayer universe around hell and redemption, along with the impact of Muzan’s control, but good and evil still seems starkly clear in Demon Slayer. I guess Akaza will later provide the most complicated interpretation of that but, even then, his path is more towards accepting defeat than doing good.

5/5 Stars (%89/100)

A very good volume that mainly focuses on Muichiro and his past. The battle continues and the demons are super persistent. I also have to give extra credit to the author who thought of very creative blood demon arts. Muichiro finally regains his memories of the past and remembers his life before joining the Demon Slayer Corps. After that, a mark very similar to that of Tanjiro appears on his face. We also learn more about Mitsuri and her life as well. Surprisingly, a similar mark appears on her chest and gives her an advantage over the demon. I wonder what that mark is and why people other than Tanjiro are getting them (wink wink). This arc is almost over and the highlight of this volume and perhaps the whole arc is the mysterious swordsman that Tanjiro keeps seeing and the mark itself.

This volume was great as it amps up the story and gives us the emotional backstory of Tokito and his family and his brother which reaffirms his conviction and then his fight with the genie Gyokko is next level even as the latter takes another forms and he fights like anything to take him down and then we have the side of Tanjiro as he is fighting Hantensu and his split things with Genya. The fight is becoming more epic. This volume had great character moments, emotional affirmations, convictions tested and good designs and insane fight scenes with the mystery deepening.

The art continue to be great.
The story seems to be slipping? Stalling? Filler?
We do learn more about the "Mist" and "Love" leaders (I can't seem to spell the leadership title / fighting style correctly) background. There is a whole bit with a demon claiming to have artistic talents.
The characters seem to just be at a loss if chopping off the head of a demon does not work. Sometimes ignoring things that seem to work for trying for the neck again. Oh boy.

Until next time.

The attack on the Swordsmiths' village continues and in the midst of it we get to see Tokito's origin story. It isn't something that one would call great, but succeeds in adding depth and motive to the character.

I like what the author has done with the characters, all getting together as a team, fighting the demons.

Hotaru Haganezuka also gets his time to shine.
