This attractive ,informative, and approachable book highlights the true,heart-wrenching stories of young men and women who are the victims of eating disorders.Body image and self perception are often skewed by the media, and the result is more than nine million teenagers with eating disorders. There are many others, and their effects are not always states alone. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia are just two more commonly recognizable forms of eating disorders. There are many effects and many are not obvious.Highlighted here are warning signs, dangerous physical and physiological side effects as well as treatment options. In addition to the introdution ,which describes a debalting day in the life of an eating disorder victim, there are five powerful chapters with acompanying illusrtative photos. Each section demonstartes the impact of eating disorders and breaking disorders and begin with a breakdown in form of chapter menu. The accessible guide to the symptoms and effects of eating disorders also includes numerous cases studies of various individuals who have experienced living with these challenges and experiences. One significant quote is”The second was that that if this didn't work I was going to kill myself”this was said by one of the victims in the book.Taking things like this are serious in a manner of way because these victims may be thinking of suicide instead of living in these conditions. Basically I feel like this book would be a good resource if you know a friend suffering from these eating disorders which will not only benefit you but that person you are trying to help.It gives good advice as if I put myself in this situation this would help me help out someone I truly care about because knowing that someone out there cares and might know how I feel may help me out. I really do recommend this book out to especially teenagers because as you may not know the society these days are not caring about how others feeling may be hurt and not knowing how that person’s life is going on at home.
The genre of this book was Non-fiction. I really liked this book because it gets you in the head of the people who are suffering and makes you feel thankful about yourself. It is also really interesting because they have some really interesting facts about the causes and effects of Eating Disorders. Now that I know some of the causes to this disorder, I want to help people who are struggling and help clear their head of that thought.
VOYA Nonfiction Honors List: This book is wonderful! The stories are heart wrenching and informative. I would definitely teach this book in my classroom. I believe that most students have or are facing issues with eating disorders. I remember a time in high school where I seriously considered trying and did try several methods that were mentioned in this book. Although I was fortunate to overcome the issues I had, many aren't able to do so. I believe this book is appropriate. As a teacher, one does not have to use the entire book. The teacher can pick out certain stories that they feel are relevant to the class.
It was a little dry and text-bookish despite it's attempts to be otherwise. There are lots of pictures, and the font is larger than in most non-fiction selections. It attempts to read like a magazine - but misses the mark.
I wouldn't recommend that teens read this book unless they are motivated by dry textbookish materials.
If I were to put this book in the hands of a teen - I'd be comfortable doing so with teens 11+.
