Iruma-kun's life probably couldn't have been worse.. and then he gets sold to a demon. :P
I was looking around for some more manga to read and I wanted something that was silly when I bumped against this one. I have to say this was fun but I had some issues.
Meet Iruma, a human boy (looks 12 but is probably 14) and he is sold to a demon. Now this sounds pretty terrible right? But luckily the demon isn't looking to eat Iruma... well not yet and as long as he says yes, he just wants a grandson and Iruma is perfect. I had such a big laugh when the demon confessed that is why he wanted to keep Iruma, I guess you have to get your grandchildren from somewhere right? Iruma gets to go to school and finally have a good education. Only problem, it is a demon/devil school... that means a daily bath in some perfume to mask his yummy human smell. I wonder how long it will be before Iruma is found out, or that there is something more going on with Iruma given certain things that happen in the book.
I had quite a laugh at the eccentric and weird characters that Iruma meets, the food he is eating, and oh my gosh is that Snape from Harry Potter (he has the attitude and the look at least), the school looks fabulous, and the lessons are interesting. Plus, how can I resist the whole summoning of a familiar? I want one! Hopefully something cute and not murderous.
The art was also pretty nicely done. It fits with the manga/story/characters really well.
However.... It felt really episodic to me. While it did string together as one story in the end, it just felt too much like oh here is another day in the life of Iruma, what will he do today? Who will submit to him today? What kind of stupid luck will he have now?
Yes, luck, and coincidence. Everything just went too smoothly for him. He gets to school, as the only human (gee, this sounds familiar), but due to luck he manages to impress all the students. Not late thereafter he gets in a fight which he wins... and I could go on. I don't mind some things going smoothly, but I would like a bit less coincidence. Maybe some bad luck would make it more fun for me. Now everything just breezes into his life. I almost don't believe he has endured all he did with his horrible parents (who really shouldn't have gotten a kid).
That ending.. another thing that just didn't make me very happy. Instead of being like OH COOL, I was more like OH LORD NO, why? *sighs*
So yeah, a bit of a mixed bag, despite the things that weren't too fun/good I still had tons of fun reading it and laughed my butt off during several parts of the manga. Plus, as I said I liked the art! I will definitely give this one another volume before I determine if I am continuing or not.
Pity poor Iruma - his deadbeat parents have just sold him to a demon. But wait, maybe that's not a bad thing? Because the demon he's been sold to actually just really, really wants a grandson, and now he's ready to pamper Iruma and make sure that he can live his best life, in the most ridiculous way, of course.
If you're already a fan of the anime adaptation, reading this is a no-brainer; the show has clearly been very faithful, based on this first volume. But even if you're not familiar with the story, it's worth picking up, because it's just delightful - it blends goofy fantasy humor with a strong sense of kindness as Iruma bumbles his way through his first days at demon school and learns that he's worth something besides hard physical labor. This book brings the main trio of characters (Iruma, Asmodeus, and Clara) together, as well as introducing the first few members of the Misfit Class, and it's not hard to become invested in the characters' adventures. Silly and sweet with a touch of danger, this is a fun book for old and new fans of the franchise alike.
[Thanks to Netgalley and Kodansha for a copy of this manga in return for an unbiased review]
Iruma’s parents manage to top the pantheon of lousy manga caregivers by selling him to a demon for riches. Now it’s school time for a student who eats like a meal, along with his utter inability to say no to anything and, maybe, the one thing he needs to survive.
Dang, this is a strong start to a series. I’d dipped into the first episode of the anime and found it funny enough, but this makes me wish I had watched more (except now I’ll read more instead). And I might like parts of this a bit better on the page than the screen even.
It opens up with the multiple ridiculous salvos of Iruma’s absurdly awful life on earth, subsequently combined with the hilariously indifferent and cavalier way his parents sell him off to his new demonic grandfather for the good life.
And then his grandfather turns out to be incredibly doting in the most cringe way possible and, sadly, in a position of power at the school. So no sooner has the school song detailed just how much everybody wants to eat humans than Iruma makes a massive spectacle of himself.
This eventually turns into the time-honoured ‘misfit class against the world’ trope, but not before Iruma has demonstrated a very handy survival skill, gained a couple of fun tagalongs, and also turned the school’s Snape equivalent into his familiar (that guy’s attitude makes me laugh very, very much).
It’s maybe not original, but there’s a lot of silly here and a hearty dollop of heart too. Iruma is nice beyond the very definition of the word and this shake-up to the demon realm means he’s coming though these overwhelming odds just by being a good guy. It’s pretty impossible not to root for him at that point.
The friends are basically one power and one major attribute types, but I do like Clara and her learning a lesson about not letting people use her. That’s punctuated with a vending machine to the head, in case you were still wondering what the story tone is like. She’s more than she seems from her annoying first impression.
I think my major issue with this first volume might be the art. The art’s really good, in fact, but it’s really light on the page and could use some better line work. I’m not sure if that’s the review copy or the series’ age or something else, but it was super noticeable.
As I said above, this isn’t exactly a new story either, human mixes with monsters has been done a hundred times, but this is a really good version of it. I genuinely like Iruma as a character and having your reader wanting your lead to succeed is something that seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how often it’s done wrong.
4 stars - funny, some heart, a great lead. I tend not to rank first volumes really high so they have room to grow, unless they blow my socks off. Mine are still attached, but I am definitely smiling at the manga and I’ll be back for more. Solid recommend.
This was such a fun read! Like Blue exorcist but with more humor. It was silly, and had so much cool art. It reminded me of watching Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy when I was a kid. I can’t wait to read more volumes!
I loved this. It’s pretty comedic and chill since it’s kind of a slice of life manga, but it’s also got a fair bit of action and even lore too. Just a fun time all around imo
From a logical perspective, I should give this a lower rating. The plot concept isn't particularly mindblowing. The characters are heavily based on pre-existing fictional characters (Iruma from Tsunayoshi Sawada/Izuku Midoriya, Azz from Gokudera Hayato, Kalego from Severus Snape). The worldbuilding isn't substantial enough to give me an understanding of how the demon world looks like outside of the school campus, how social classes are structured, how magical spells are fueled etc.
But from an enjoyment perspective: this manga is fun.
There were tons of scenes in the plot that made me grin or laugh out loud. The author really gets my sense of humour - they know how to use timing, character facial expressions and sheer irony to give punchlines their maximum effect.
I also love all the characters and their friendships with each other. We might not get fully introduced to all of them in this first volume, but their sideline bantering feels naturally delivered and brings a lively atmosphere to the story. As the lead protag, Iruma himself is absolutely loveable. It's just refreshing to take a break from angsty main leads and have a character who is unashamedly kind.
And as someone who's read up to volume 17, I can promise you that the plot arcs in this series are really exciting and you're in for some great character development for our favourite blue bean :)
Would recommend this manga to fans of Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Assassination Classroom, Boku no Hero Academia and Kyo Kara Maou.
To be honest the story sounded interesting and when I saw how The star rating I was really looking forward to it although this for me was more just a mess I think this is more just because of my personal preference rather than anything of the story wise I don’t know why stories like this just don’t work for me I think there’s an audience out there for it but for me this will just be a hard pass.
I have seen the anime and I think the anime covers up to chapter 40 or something and this volume covered upto 7. So I cant wait to catch up so I can enjoy these more. This series is just fun. I don't really expect much more than that.
I wanted to love this book. I love the concept, but just couldn't get into the story. It might just be the fact that I am not the target audience. It wasn't bad, I just couldn't get into the story.
Ok so I began watching Iruma kun as an anime back when it first aired but I then immediately moved onto the manga. I really enjoyed the gang being up to no good and seeing Iruma progress to being the "demon lord" that Sullivan wanted him to be as his "grandson". I really liked a lot of the characters surrounding Iruma like I didnt actually mind at first having a lot of them because they really blended the story well and I always got a chuckle from every chapter as it can be seriously funny. However that all changed recently when the author decides to add even more characters by sticking them in there without context and not involving the charms around the story it once had. It was if author-san just completely went to a complete different direction from what I thought was all going to be about Irumas goal. It's becoming even more draggy now which is disappointing because I've read this manga for a long time now like I thought it had potential but nope, not anymore for me....
Mairimashita! Iruma-kun blends layers of different elements together so elegantly and in such a fun way. There’s so much culture in the literature and the writing that a few significant things had to have some heavy liberties taken in order to translate them at all. Be sure to read about these liberties in the back of this volume! (I love editor notes!)
Fun, nerdy, translation things aside, I thought this manga was a lot of fun! It was creative and engaging, entertaining and interesting. It doesn’t necessarily stand out from the crowd of shonen manga, but there’s something about it that would appeal to most audiences looking for a light hearted and fun shonen manga that doesn’t cheap out on the story for the sake of the humor.
Devil's Candy meets My Hero Academia in this action-packed, slice-of-life comedy series by Osamu Nishi! Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-Kun is a shounen manga with the perfect blend of isekai and school life.
A natural-born pushover with terrible parents, Iruma Suziki has had it rough and has been taken advantage of since birth. When his greedy parents sell his soul to a demon in exchange for riches, you'd think Iruma's life couldn't get any worse! But, then you meet the demon who bought his soul. An eccentric demon-turned-grandfather, Sullivan actually dotes on young Iruma like he's never experienced before. He even enrolls him in the prestigious demon school, Babyls! The only catch? Iruma must convince everyone in school he's actually a demon... or else they'll eat him!
I can't wait to follow Iruma on his new journey into the Netherworld, where crazy things happen around every corner, testing Iruma's pushover nature to the limits. Will he survive demon school and convince everyone he's not human? Only time will tell in Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-Kun.
The artwork is dark and sharp, yet it pulls you in with details. From chapter 1 you're already rooting for Iruma and hoping his new life with Sullivan is a good one. Each chapter brings new adventures and more havoc to Iruma's life, and you can't help falling in love with each character introduced. This series is sure to be enjoyed by readers of all ages!
Iruma has had his soul sold off by his trashy parents and must now attend school in the Netherworld all while hiding the fact that he is a human. His unique survival skills and his new doting Grandfather will help him to navigate all the dangerous challenges that he now faces.
I laughed out loud all the way through reading this, and I think it would be a good recommendation for a slightly younger audience (even though this old lady loved it!) I enjoyed all the challenges he faced and how he overcame them, the characters that were introduced and how he interacted with them and how much he adapted to his new environment. I would definitely like to see where Iruma goes in this world as he is an adorable main character.
4 stars
Thank you to Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for providing me with an eARC copy so that I could give an honest review.
This is my all time favorite comfort series. I’ve been reading it online for over a year, and now I finally get to hold a physical copy. Iruma, Azz, and Clara are such amazing characters and I’m so happy I get to relive all of their adventures again.
----------- {ENGLISH} In perspective this first volume maybe deserves a lower rating, but I come from the anime (and I'm reading this to catch up with the manga) and I absolutely love this story, so I give it 4 stars.
This first volume is absolutely introductory, the story is very simplistic (come on, you know, the plot it's quite not a marvel), but easy to read, the characters are quite stereotypical, but the fun is the humor with which it is written. As I'm up to date with the anime, I can say that Iruma-kun it's a very entertaining story, you get attached to the characters and it gets better with each arc, so, please, give this manga a chance, guaranteed laughs.
The tale of a boy with the nature of a caretaker who is sold to a demon by his dastardly parents.
This is a series that is so light and funny that you forget that it's about recovering from emotional abuse sometimes. AND THEN YOU ARE REMINDED.
I'm glad I watched the anime season 1 first; there are some buggy bits with telling the reader what they need to know when they need to know it, which are resolved in the anime and not in the first volumes of the manga. It feels like the author was learning a few things on the page, nothing that's a deal-breaker, but that were handled better in the anime.
But! Such a cute series.
Recommended if you like cuteness with WAIT WHAT moments.
Meet Iruma Suzuki who's parents just sold him off to the devil . Now Iruma, who can never say no to anyone, has been adopted by the devil and is sending him to Demon School. Follow his adventures as he tries to lie low and blend in while getting into shenanigans. I picked up this comic randomly cause it sounded interesting but I was hooked from story 2. I am enjoying this series and picking up the rest of the books. At this time, it has only 3 volumes out.
This manga started like Hayate the combat butler. after reading manga's for quite a while. i think i can sense that it may follow either of the two routes-- 1. The good route ( where he becomes a authority figure in the demon world and the parents had a plan from the begining and the demon oji chan is actually the grandpa) or 2. The hayate route ( where the parents get what they deserve and crazy endings for the boy )
Oh my gosh, this was AMAZING !!!! I was hooked after the first 10 pages and completely obsessed by the end ! Basically it's "My hero academia" but 10 times funnier ! The characters are simply insane (love them all !), the relationships are so dear too me, the plot is sooo cool, the entire story takes place in a magic school (come read this Harry Potter fans!), the rythme is amazing, and it is HILARIOUS! Go read it now !
Read only the first tome in physical but saw the 4 season of the anime. I love Iruma, his friends, his found family and all the other students of the school. This is a really touching and hearwarming anime with an exciting plot and actions.
Situations délirantes et personnages extravagants entourent Iruma, personnage d'une gentillesse poussée à l'extrême ! Il m'a un peu rappelé Deku de My hero academia !
