This second volume was still really fun to me, but I didn't love it as much as the first one. I was missing the actual convention part of the story I think. I still love our characters, and the journeys they go on within volume 2 are still really enjoyable. I was just missing that one element.
The episodes continue! (Some are not entirely intelligible except after the first volume, so spoilers ahead.)
The first two stories are in fact not even Mika as the central character, though she features in both.
It features a runaway noble girl who wants to seem more of the world, a request to have a table from someone unexpected, a quest for binding for a book and its resolution, monsters attending the convention, a Great Sage, and more.
I was really excited to see a volume 2 for this series. I had so much fun with volume 1 that I pre-ordered this volume, and I was not disappointed. This volume delivers on the same light-hearted humor and fantasy-parodying, but also delivers on extended world building and a little more continuity.
Like the previous volume, each chapter stands on its own as a short story, but this time the short stories can link together as one narrative. This is done by having characters from one short story show up in a later one. It is simple to arrange this seamlessly by having the characters gather for Magiket, such as Demon Lord Satziiko.
Magicket's fame as reached the underworld, and Demon Lord Satziiko has signed up for a booth. So not only are there humans and magical creatures selling spell scrolls (and dungeon maps, and primers on medicine for adventurers, and slash fanfiction of the local deities), but demons as well. The phrase "overnight fiends" as become literal, and it is hilarious. But that is just one story.
Another story stars Miss Aile, a young noble girl who is frustrated with all-day studying, basically cloistered in her family's mansion. So she runs away from home to see the world and accidentally boards a ship headed to Magiket. She is adorable. She looks cute, tries to act grown-up, and gets swept up in the event. She even bonds with Mika over similar parent troubles. She has a fantastic character arc, and a satisfying conclusion to her introductory story. There is also a sequel hook, suggesting that she will appear later.
The fantasy parodies show up again, this time in the form of dragon hunting and the Sword-in-the-Stone template. Neither are original ideas but they are written and displayed in a way that only this particular setting could achieve, which makes them new.
The art is still beautiful. Aile, again, is adorable, and the landscapes featured are great to look at, but the dragon is fearsome. The arrangement of the panels helps to keep the action moving and provide for twists, or punch-lines as the case may be. There is little true danger here, but tension is still maintained in this way.
Trickster Eric Novels gives "A Witch's Printing Office volume 2" an A+
'A Witch's Printing Office' continues to be fun, about a lady from our work setting up a fantasy spellbook exchange and printing shop. I enjoy seeing 'everyday' things transposed into a fantasy world - introducing new literature to people, using a magic sword to trim pages, trying to find a source of dragonhide for binding; the bit about magic to blow away a typhoon didn't quite land for me, but I imagine if I'd ever been waiting for a convention in the rain it'd be awfully tempting to imagine. :)
Several new stories with our printing press + Comiket/Magiket. Including a girl who has now turned to the dark side (welcome we got cookies), a sword who was looking for a new hero and apparently was waiting a bit too long which made me laugh to see him panic + we meet the demon lord + a dragon who is clearly me + more magiket and more fun + a note on a board that is going to come back in the next volume, I am sure! I love the mix of magic x humour x books of this series~ I wish I could visit Magiket.
Making new friends at Magiket while opening it up for new people to attend and new items to be sold! (In this case, the Demon Lord and her fiends and BL stories) Meanwhile, Mika continues her printing business, acquiring new materials and tools to make the process DA BEST! (And you'll never guess what she gets)
But! There's a storm on the horizon and hints of a very important new character about to appear!
Is it bad that I identify so heavily with the dragon?
I love the stories in this one. A run-away, a book-loving dragon, a wizard who needs a break, a sword in the stone, and a pun-filled story about teamwork! The main character's primary goal isn't mentioned much, but her passion to create books and put on the market is clear on every page.
Good pacing for a second installment. The world is being revealed at a reasonable rate, with memorable supporting cast. The plot moves along in a steady fashion.
Fun book. Noble Runaways, Magic Swords in Stones, Demon Lord Attendees, Red Dragon Readers, Vacation for a Grand Sage, Reaping the Whirlwind. Mika is able to make the best of allies.
YAY Tellement enthousiasmant !
My favorite involves a young noble woman who runs away from home to attend the market. She's extremely lucky that a ship diverted to her floating island home. After a fun and busy day, she discovers the reason for the diversion. It's a hilarious punchline of an awkward meeting.
Another fun one involves an elderly wizard who I swear is the lovechild of Rincewind and Twoflower. He loves to travel but is antisocial. He's also on the lam (sort of). Finally he's very powerful but his magic is a bit chaotic. Of course Mika doesn't know any of this and gets along swimmingly with him. He gets the vacation he needs and wants, and she gets some last minute help.
