The Duke of Death and His Maid follows Viktor, the duke, who was cursed by a witch and kills anything he touches. Ever since he was a child, he was unable to touch another person or living thing because he ends up killing them. Due to this, people fear him. Even his own family doesn't live with him because of how risky it is, which leaves him with only two servants: Rob the butler and Alice the maid.
Something I really like is how open Viktor and Alice are about their feelings for each other. Alice is fully aware that he can kill her with a single touch but she isn't scared. If anything, she teases him because she knows who he really is and would never want to actually kill anyone on purpose. She makes him feel so loved and special even without touch. It was so heartwarming.
"This story is a little bit funny, a little bit pervy, and a little bit true love." -from the mangaka at the end of the volume. Basically this volume is that, if that interests you you'll love this.
I've been wanting to read this comic for a while now, likely because of the Victorian? (I want to say) setting. I love the Duke's wardrobe.
The chapters are short, but it feels like things actually happen, rather than it just being set up, punchline, next chapter. There is alot of Alice teasing the Duke, ALOT. More on that when I discuss light spoilers. It sets up the characters pretty well, develops them. It sticks with a small limited cast and delivers well. You understand who the Duke is, what his life was like you feel for him and his curse. The first few chapters are excellent also, you could read those 4 or 5 and see if you like the series probably. It's a comedy, yes, but there are still moments of heart. And the 3 main characters are all pretty likeable. A main nitpick would be Alice being a bit too one note. However even though her main joke is that she is flirtatious she does have amble moments where she genuinely cares for the duke, and it's really sweet.
The art's really good too, nice use of camera angle or whatever, no talking heads, the designs are great, the style's pretty, just chef's kiss. I would frame the comic on my wall. Also I love how they draw young Duke (does he have a name) he's got these BIG frog eyes.
So yeah since this is a period piece and since it's really cute I reccomend it. But if you're looking for something that's more than a comedy, you really liked Konosuba's humor, or want a non contemp setting romance... tadah
Light spoilers
THANK YOU FOR NOT PROLONGING THE WILL THEY WON'T THEY, ROMANCE OF THE CENTURY.
I’m terrible fascinated by the macabre and things concerning a morbid nature and this is such a delightful read. I love the duke, I love the premise of the story, I love the maid. (I do have a penchant for strong FMLs and she is posed to be one). It also has one of my favourite dynamics- shy ML and pushy FML. So I’m positively foaming at the mouth to see how this one turns out.
While there is the occasionally almost innocent and cute scene in this manga, it is just to much of sexual attraction and lack of respect for boundaries or appropriate behavior. Just go watch Pushing Up Daisies for a cute comedic gothic romance.
This is a weird story in which we find a cursed Duke and his maid. Some parts were cute and funny…some were a little creepy (not scary creepy, but invading personal space kind of creepy)
Does it make me want to read the rest of the series…sadly no because I think it’s going to be more of the same.
I had actually started reading this volume in June but after chapter 12, it started skipping and repeating chapters. It was printing error. I got the volume out again from Cleveland Public Library but it was the same thing. I decided just to read the remaining chapters online.
The Duke is sent off to live with his maid and butler. He is cursed to kill anything that he touches.
I was looking through Seven Seas calendar (as I often do), when I cover caught my attention. This is a slice of life and it shows Alice (the maid) and Viktor (the Duke) day to day life. He does one day plan on marrying Alice but wants to break the curse first.
I looked online and saw this series ends with 16 volumes so I have a lot of reading in the next few years to look forward to.
Wow, both this story and the couple are in it are just too cute for words! 😍
That poor duke, though. Abandoned by his family and unable to touch any living thing, that must be so frustrating. Especially with that saucy maid Alice teasing him at every turn.
I'm just curious as to what time period this is supposed to take place in. Not that it really makes any difference to my overall enjoyment, but there's this gothic, Edwardian aesthetic going on and then there's some modern language and sensibilities peppered in here and there.
Ok, these two are ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE!!! He can't touch anything without killing it, and he wants nothing more, than to have a romantic relationship with his beautiful maid. She wants nothing more than his attention, and to tease him into blushing constantly. Yes, the ecchi element is there, but I feel it is much more mild compared to most ecchi I have personally come across. I'm going to take this one a volume at a time, so we will see. It is a promising start for me.
I really didn't know what to expect with this one, I picked it up because the plot sounded interesting as well as the art style. I can't say I expected the plot to be exactly like this. The whole teasing maid is funny and quite endearing in patches.
The chapters were short, so I'm not sure if the series will have massive development points or just be a more pervy fantasy themed teasing master Takagi-San.
Very cute, a little suggestive, and funny. I like the art style and the characters. The Duke was cursed at a young age by a witch. Anything alive would die by his touch. People would die, animals, and flowers. Abandoned by his family, he lives with a butler named Rob and his maid Alice in a mansion paid by his family.
So far, each chapter focuses on a different scenario. There's not really a story / plot yet. I'm thinking either volume 2 or 3 will begin an ongoing plot.
Not really sure how to feel. I'm not a huge fan of the sexual harassment (although I am glad to see it called out as such) and disregard for personal boundaries. But just maybe there's something deeper with this story? To the mysterious talk of witches does intrigue me. I'm willing to give this another volume or two.
ROMANTIC, LOVELY, COMEDY, AND HOTNESS MOMENTS, Best manga I have ever read (just keep in mind that i have read only 5 manga till now , so this is my fav but I am sure there are lot more good manga than this, well guys I would really like some manga recommendation, just reply to this review back
5/23 Just the dull everyday tale of a depressed, cursed, and exiled young man and the voluptuous maid who constantly sexually harasses him. Forced myself to read two chapters to see if it was going to grow any kind of plot beyond the premise, and it didn't. Hard pass.
I decided to read the manga after watching the anime. It’s very sweet and cute and I really enjoy the relationship between the Duke and Alice. There’s not a whole lot of plot going on at the moment, but it’s not a bad thing in this case. It’s just some quick fun
This is one of the few mangas where I actually don't like the story at all. The art is alright and the plot sounds interesting until you start reading and figure out its one of those mangas where 90% of the story telling is sexual and theres little to non plot progression.
It was cute. There’s enough heart and earnest feelings that I didn’t mind the peek-a-boo cleavage. Not the type of thing I could binge multiple volumes of. Highlights were dancing, the cat, the meteor shower and the extra.
The 1st volume of this series is a great intro to the plot of this series. I like the art style and the relationship the MMC has with the other characters.
I'm excited to read more since I picked up volumes 1-10 recently hehe
Ohhhhhh this is just so adorable! Firat heard about it when someone talked about the anime version. Reading the manga and its just soooo cute the relationship between the two.
3.25 stars The story itself is a pretty standard romance story for the demographic. I do like the gothic style. I can see potential, but it falls short.
