This was a lot of exposition, longing glances and thoughts, intricate plans for far in the future, and preparation for action where nothing much happens. The biggest action was when the group when to find a noble scientist and.....he wasn't home. I have the feeling this series wants to be full of court and interpersonal intrigue, but the stakes, characters, and narrative style just don't connect with me.
**Thanks to the artist, publisher, and NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
"Once your course is set you have to navigate life differently."
I am SOOOOOO proud of these characters!!! *sobs*
Once again I got super emotional and cried and just like THIS BETTER NOT BE THE NEW NORM WHEN READING THESE VOLUMES! LOL!!
Seeing Obi with Shirayuki really brought a lot of comfort to my own heart and thought it awesome that she felt spurred on by his company. Her dream hasn't changed since the beginning but only has gotten grander, and LOVE that Obi is going to be her bodyguard to help her reach for the stars. They really make one of the best duos and appreciate their friendship so deeply in this series.
Not only that but Shirayuki and Ryu's too! Their friendship is different than the others, but no less special, and think it's because Ryu doesn't say much, but when he does, it really speaks volumes. (No pun intended.) They have that trust in one another (and I LOVED that moment when Ryu even says so!) that brings out the best in the other when working side-by-side.
I know in the past I've seen a few people share they didn't like how much there is a focus on the "glowing rocks," but I really enjoyed this volume because of it! I thought it was fun and insightful to see more of what Shirayuki does and thought it was really engaging too because they have a lead on the pretty glowing flower, but things aren't looking too well. Due to this, I definitely laughed at the final page because Obi mentioned much earlier in the volume that it's time to see how far her status can carry her, and I think seeing the connections she has made is tied into that.
And the reunion!!! I got emotional there too! LOL! It was wonderful and truly hope there is PLENTY of time for Zen and Shirayuki to spend together because four months is wayyyyy too long for our gang not to be reunited. <3
Sort of unrelated, but I love how Obi and the creator (at least in her sidebars) troll Zen. LOL! I would even say Kiki does too and have to confess that I'm totally here for it. LOL!
Wonderful volume and glad I got emotional but not because I was feeling sad. LOL!
You can tell I’m really fishing to say something in these reviews, heh.
Again, this volume was fine but still nothing really happens. I really wish I was more invested in this series but despite liking the characters I just can’t get past how kinda boring it is. This is purely a personal thing as the series is well written. I just want a little more action or character depth or emotion or…something. And as the series goes on it’s not doing any of that for me. ☹️
The bonus chapter with Mitsuhide and Kiki was great though. I love these two. 🥰
There’s also another separate one shot called “00 Days of Summer” and it was okay.
Hopefully something interesting will actually happen in this series soon…
I really do love this series. I love the characters, I love how simple and sweet it is.
I see some reviews that feel that nothing happens in this series, but this is a slice of life shojo... so things are happening. It's just not a high stakes at all times kind of story, set in an older era.
I love the friendship between Shirayuki and Obi. I love how they work together. Little Ryu is so cute and I love that Shirayuki has no issue at all that her boss is at least 10 years younger than she is. She just respects his position and does what she can to help him.
I am also so happy that Zen and Shirayuki aren't going to spend two years completely apart. They are so cute.
This one really focused on Shirayuki and her work. I loved seeing her learn more about making medicine and her drive to get it right and help people. I also am interested to see where the plot with the mineralogist goes and if they succeed with the orimmallys.
I love this... I love the story, i love the unique characters of this story, i love isit lot, i love each and every about the story .. lovely The best romantic story in planet... It's just amazing... I watched the anime version but it only have 2 seasons...i request the creator to continue the story.. please... Anime is the best way to feel the story.... Please continue the story i request you...
I haven't given a volume of this series only 3 stars since the first one, but...I don't know, I just found this one a little boring. Not much in the way of conflict or relevance to the overall plot. I'm not bothered, really, because I'm sure the storyline will pick up again. I just can't say I enjoyed this one as much as previous volumes.
Shirayuki and Ryu, now joined with Obi, begin their two year transfer to Lilias. A lot of alchemical research happens and some soul-searching, but precious little else. Also, a wild one-shot appears.
We start off with Shirayuki and Ryu getting settled in and Obi’s reintroduction. Parts of this are pretty great - we see how complimentary our two herbalists are when working together and Obi lends a helping hand with a difficult problem.
Obi also hauls Shirayuki out to see a sunrise and have a little chat, basically so he can nurse his crush a little more. It’s fun but nothing too exciting - I mean, Zen knows the score as we established last volume and trusts Obi, so it’s hardly threatening.
There’s also a completely charming bonus manga featuring Kiki and Mitsuhide, plus their ongoing romantic tensions, that’s way more fun than the main story.
We also also have a brilliant little one-shot, set on the cusp of summer break in a modern school, which is perfectly delightful. Even with my usual dislike for one-shots, I was really taken with this one. I kind of wish the mangaka was doing a straight-up school shojo.
Where this book falls down is, unfortunately, in the material that makes up the bulk of the story. A lot of this volume involves research into the plants that caused the plague a couple volumes back and it is the biggest slog in the series to date.
There is a lot of ‘tell not show’ that drones on and on and involves lore that is just coming out of nowhere and is so, so dry that I feel like I should have gotten course credit. The whole point of this academic minutiae is to make the plants shine brighter because they are pretty.
Yep.
It’s a far cry from a plague threatening to kill people left, right, and centre. There are less stakes to this entire plot than at Vlad the Impaler’s wedding reception. They should have investigated how it threatens to cause comas in the readership.
Splitting our five leads up made perfect sense, narratively and dramatically, but the book struggles to fill the huge loss of their banter and camaraderie with something else and doesn’t really come close. When everybody reunites at the end the book briefly roars back to life and it is a very telling moment.
It’s a bummer - this has always been a slower, more thoughtful series and has often taken the more pensive route to its destination, but it’s never become mired in itself. Nor had it, until this moment, made me realize I was bored silly as I was reading it.
3 stars - sadly my lowest rating yet for a very dependable series. That research stuff is a serious two-star snooze, but that bonus manga and one-shot are amazing and balance it out for me. Thankfully we’re promised a grand soirée next time out which should bring some energy back to things.
I pre-ordered this volume because I was so excited for it, however I kind of feel like this was mostly filler manga. It had a few of the classic Snow White with the Red Hair moments but overall it just didn't do it for me this time. I hope the story picks up next volume.
Real romance is going on in this manga. Realistically portrayed boy-girl relationship without the 'overly shy' dere-dere ness. If you liked Kaichou wa Maid-sama you'll most probably enjoy this too.
"Snow White with the Red Hair" is fantasy-type manga that takes place in a faraway kingdom. At the beginning of the tale, Shirayuki wants to become an herbalist, but the prince of Tanbarun is planning to make her his concubine! She makes a run for it and encounters Zen, the second prince of the nearby kingdom of Wisteria. Zen helps her escape from her plight and escorts her to his kingdom, where she becomes a full-fledged court herbalist. The rest of the story follows their adventures together (and apart!) as they develop deeper feelings for one another and work to overcome the gap between their social stations.
What impressed me the most about this story was how balanced the characters were. Often, characters are written with extreme characteristics and stereotypes. While this can be funny and distinctive, it can also get old after a while. It was refreshing to see that Shirayuki wasn’t a helpless princess, nor was she refusing assistance. She certainly did want to do things for herself and on her own, but she wasn’t above accepting help when she needed it. Even Zen, despite his stubbornness and rule-flouting tendencies, didn’t just rush off to do whatever he wanted all the time. Instead, he faithfully played the role of prince and followed his duty rather than his emotions.
Personally, I find it so much easier to connect with a character who knows how to flex and adapt as their situation changes. Plus, it was so exciting to see these characters build their relationship the “right way,” by working through the rules and customs of their world so they could perform the roles they’d been given to the best of their abilities.
Shirayuki & Ryuu are back at Lyrias & reunite with people they met the 1st time they were there and some new ones. Obi has suddenly appeared to Shirayuki & Ryuu's shock but then also expected; as he does appear when neither of them expect him to. They were shocked to see how Kirito grew taller the last time they saw each other. Shirayuki & Ryuu joins Shidan & Suza with their research on the Olin Maris, to make the plant poison-free & capture it's glow without making it poisonous but it's taking some time. They eventually find a clue: Glitter Crystal Stones & a noble called Lata Forzeno. However finding Lata & asking for his help is proving difficult as he is avoiding them & then he suddenly leaves Lyrias. But Shirayuki has a plan on finding him & informs the others that she & Obi have been invited to the Night Banquet at the palace so they will be gone as well. Shirayuki & Obi unexpected reunite with Zen & his aides sooner than they predicted but Obi decides to pull a prank on him 1st, with help from Kiki who saw them approaching.
I never thought that I would be one of those people eagerly awaiting the next book in a manga series to come out, but here we are. When this crossed my desk a couple of weeks ago, I had to fight myself to send it for processing before I read it.
I do love this one. I love the characters and they've become like old friends to me. I thought that I would not be able to stand Shirayuki and Zen being separated but it was fine. This was a slower book than the others but I find myself so drawn into the world that it doesn't matter. Honestly, it's kind of soothing.
This volume finds Shirayuki and Ryu in Lilias where they are helping to research the glowing flowers that previously made everybody sick. They are trying to find a way to preserve the luminescence without causing illness but the only lead they have is a nobleman who doesn't seem to want to be found. Zen, meanwhile, seems to be mostly working and pining away or something.
Maybe I’m expecting too much from this series, but I just find it incredibly underwhelming. I love the art! But the story is so slow, and honestly not very interesting. Perhaps it has something to do with the translation from Japanese to English? Oftentimes it feels very disconnected, there’s no sense of urgency, little conflict…. I might drop it soon. I’m not sure I want to invest in something I’m finding so little enjoyment in. I don’t know how rereadable this series will be for me at this point.
Shirayuki's and Ryu's adventures in Lilias continues as they get adjusted to their new lives and join the orimmallys research group. Obi also tags along for fun until he and Shirayuki need to track down a nobleman and ask about his research on wunderstones.
There's also a chapter featuring a really cute Mitsuhide and Kiki moment. And there's a oneshot chapter featuring bubbles. It's cute but it's not very polished.
Good volume! Shirayuki makes an important decision regarding her future that is very much in line with her character and development throughout the series. There was interesting progress made regarding the orimmallys. You couldn't help but also feel equally excited as the researchers to learn more and seek answers. I also really liked the bonus chapter between two particular characters. It was cute and made me smile.
kinda wished that shirayuki, obi, and ryu’s stay in lilias was more detailed rather than just a time skip bc i really thought it'd be a bit longer and it would've been nice to see shirayuki develop as a character separate from zen muna medj
on another note, nasasaktan na aq masyado kay obi bilang isang dakilang obizenyuki bitch di na to kaya ng puso ko parang onti-onting nagtatanim ng sama ng loob pls
Idk I just really enjoyed this volume. It was so relaxing and I liked seeing Shirayuki focus on her career, and getting some of the more fantasy elements along with her work was so fun and interesting. There wasn't much romance in this volume until the last chapter, but I didn't mind, and the reunion was cute. The bonus story was also pretty sweet. It didn't match well with the rest of the volume, but I didn't mind it too much.
Another good installment. The end of this book makes the next one something to look forward to! The soiree!!! :D Also the extra story was sweet, a bit lacking but sweet.
"There's something so heartwarming about having all five of them together. That's the vibe in chapter 65. I think Kiki is prone to nonsense at times like that, and lo and behold....Zen and Mitsuhide fell for it, hook, line and sinker!"
This latest installment sees Shirayuki on the hunt for a mysterious academic noble in Lilias in search of answers around. the mysterious flower that caused so many to become sick. Zen and Shirayuki are also reunited for the first time since Shirayuki's assignment to the academic research facilities in Lilias.
Snow White with the Red Hair is a manga that I always pick up when there is a new installment! I love all the main characters and the adventures they have. It has a very Studio Ghibli-meets-Disney vibe so of course I fell in love with it. In this latest installment, things are kind of slow but knowing the series that means something exciting will happen soon! I can’t wait!
Watched the anime and knew that the story continued in the manga. It's light fluff. I know that the premise requires Shirayuki and Zen to be together but it would have been more interesting to me if along the way they realized that they are better as supportive friends and she ended up with Obi. Also, she just utters "Zen" way too often.
