I like to read about triads ever since Elizabeth Watasin made me a believer (look up her series, she has triads in almost all of them). Cynthia Dane/Hildred Billings threw her book Menage a Trois in the sales bin and it came at the right time for me to take a peek.
The cover doesn’t match any of the characters so you can skip that. Billionaire power couple (one domme, one switch) seeks new submissive to spoil rotten and to help them in the office. All three come with plenty of baggage to make it a volatile endeavour. All seems good until it goes off the rails in a spectacular fashion. After the smoke clears, are they still brave enough to try again?
Caitlyn was the most sympatico of the three, didn’t get much traction with Jane and Becca - the one with the most damage - was just a wet noodle. It was light on the bdsm, don’t buy it especially for that. Dane/Billings writes well, but it didn’t wow me.
f/f/f explicit but not overtly so
Themes: Damaged goods, thriads, why they work, why they don’t work
Becca has spent a year recovering from an abusive relationship in which she was the submissive partner of a domme who did not respect her boundaries. Hired by a new company run by two women, Caitlyn and Jane, Becca is offered an executive assistant position and is also invited to become the third woman in their relationship. Both Jane and Caitlyn are dommes and can only continue in their relationship if they have a submissive third.
All three main characters are holding a lot of baggage, but Becca's is by far the heaviest stemming from her difficult childhood and the abusive relationship. While Caitlyn and Jane talk a lot about valuing communication, there are things neither has ever told the other and things they haven't told Becca. All of this unravels in about the last 25% of the book.
I wanted to like this book because I was open to learning about how a 3-person relationship could work. The problem with the book is that it's way too long and the first half is just not engaging. It started to feel like the book was overwritten so that author could get more page reads on KU, but I do know that this author has written long books before that I've liked a lot (On the Rocks and Bound being two of them). It takes almost 3/4 of the long book before I felt anything for these characters and before I even understood what Jane and Caitlyn saw in each other at all, given the fact that all they do is snipe at each other. Becca's resolution of deep-seeded emotional issues seems almost magical. No therapy, no real working things through. I just didn't feel it.
Becca is looking for a job after a year off. Her previous job had her working for her girlfriend, but their relationship went from having a BDSM tone to outright abuse. Now she's finding herself in a dangerously similar situation as her new job has her working for successful financial partners Jane Wong and Caitlyn Adams, both of whom would like Becca to be the third in their relationship, again with BDSM elements. But in polyamorous and BDSM relationships, communication is key, and all three are keeping bombshell secrets from each other.
I wanted to read this because I'm curious about unconventional relationships and how they might work. This one has the added difficulty levels of power exchange and workplace relationships, so I was really interested to see how the protagonists navigate all that.
The simple answer is that they don't.
Sure it's a HEA ending, but largely because it all falls apart and then magically comes together again. I say magic, because it's quite clear that Becca is actually deeply traumatized by her earlier relationship and has developed some disturbing coping strategies that never get addressed. Both Jane and Caitlyn lay all their drama on the table, and that's reasonably satisfying, but the style of relationship that they have with Becca feels like they've swept Becca's issues under the rug. There are also issues with all of the families involved that are left up in the air and unresolved, making the already very long book feel unfinished.
In terms of steaminess: it's not. The bedroom scenes are very tame and often abstracted.
I was excited for this. But sadly I only got about 1/4 before I had to give up. Like another reviewer on her said, it’s way too long and a lot of the text could just have been cut out and it wouldn’t made a difference. I ended up just skimming the story. The plot sounded interesting, but the actual story was not. It came on to strong and I couldn’t figure out the relationship with Jane and Caitlyn. I couldn’t connect to any of the characters
Not my favorite Dane/Billings book but an intriguing concept. Jane and Caitlyn have a broken romantic relationship but a successful business as venture capitalists. To mend their personal relationship Jane suggests they find a third women to fulfill both their needs so they can stay together.
There is a BDSM component to this story that is wasted on me. If that’s your thing, there is plenty to work with here and you will relate to, and enjoy, this book. If it’s not of interest, you might want to just skip this one.
I could never imagine sharing someone in this way, but the story is fascinating. All three women have their secrets and it could make everything fall apart. Their relationship requires trust, comprising, communication and love. There were some twists through out the story. I found myself upset with all the characters at one time or the other. It’s an amazing and emotional journey. The he narrator was very good and make each character stand out. The book is very sexy and gets very heated in and out of the bedroom.
This was okay for me. The cover of the book is not good. I hate when the cover has pictures of people but it doesn't reflect what the characters look like on the page. If you are afraid of erotica, this for sure was on the mild side. The scenes were more artistic than explicit. I would have liked a tad bit more but was still ok with the way things took place. 3.25 stars
You will certainly enjoy this threesome tale of Rebecca as she joins partners Caitlyn and Jane for fun and games. Erotic but somewhat mild for me. XOXOXOs to the author, Cynthia Dane, for creating this sapphic adventure:)
Oh, there were so many things I found problematic about this book. I hardly know where to start.
For one, the dynamic between Caitlyn and Jane confused me. Now, the further I read, I did get slightly less confused. Their history, plus the recent breakup with their third, as well as HOW it went down.... Okay, fine. But they kind of sounded like they hate each other? And that didn't change much. Even as things about their past made sense, I was left wondering how anything about their personal OR professional lives could be considered anything but toxic. At the best of times, they seemed to resent each other.
Jane's idea to introduce a third, for both of them, made sense in light of things. But I wonder at someone who is so love with someone else that they will do anything to keep them, but even with the attempts made, that they were still so bitter and resentful toward each other. And oh, the secret keeping! Bloody hell! That sounds downright toxic. I mean, the way they talked to and about each other would be eyebrow raising under other circumstances, in my opinion, but even more so when you see the thoughts both of them are having, in their respective POV's. The resentment is real, and I spent a good chunk of this book, especially the first half, wondering why they wanted to be together, third or not.
Rebecca...she needs help. She mentioned therapy, but it seemed like the past tense, and honey, you still need it. Ya shouldn't have stopped going. It was truly amazing how one conversation with Mabel (of which I still do not know the contents) could cause her to spiral so fast. That's not just 'needs help', that's 'still caught in her ex's grasp'. Which also means you are not ready for another relationship, even if it was perfect and oh-so loving. And damn, it took her long enough to realize how the wrench she threw in things just made her a pawn between Cait and Jane. I mean, she starts a fight, and then lets Cait take her with her? That would have been the time to walk away. I was screaming at her for like, two chapters to just freaking leave. I mean, at least she did walk, finally, but it took far too long, in my opinion. And then she went and effed that up, too, by going to a sodding sex club. *facepalm*
The sex scenes bothered me. They were what I hate most in romances; more implication than description. I am not reading a story, any story, so I can guess what is happening. The author's job is to paint me a picture. And Rebecca way overthinks everything, which ruins every damn moment, sexy or not.
The reunion was lacking. Lacking in conversation, lacking in a clear outline of how they would move forward, do better...and then they jumped right into having sex. And there isn't inherently anything wrong with that. Sex is one way you show love and affection, yes? Except, in that very scene, Rebecca admitted that she often got confused, between love and sex and submission, and she needed to unfuck that in her head. But then she got into bed with them anyway, which not only negated the reveal of her issues and her needing work and acknowledging that, but also took away from the moment. The three of them could have agreed that they loved each other and valued what they had enough to try again, and just, well, did that. They could have kissed and cuddled and shared a bed, and that would have been perfect. The sex was untimely and in my opinion, furthered the unhealthy dynamic that they were supposedly fighting. Not to mention how Cait and Jane handled this brief breakup in the first place. I mean, mere scenes prior, they had been discussing Becca's history and the abuse and how it fucked up her view of the world, but then they literally showed her exactly what she expected to see, after Becca talked to Mabel. It's like when the toddler plays mom into doing something they want, and she doesn't realize she got played until after.
I do acknowledge that not everyone could handle that well, and Lord knows that even with the best of intentions, you could royally fuck up a sensitive situation. But I was so angry at the two of them for supposedly wanting so badly to help Becca and love her and show her she was cared for, only to fight over her and act like two spoiled brats right after.
That is just a taste of why I was frustrated with the way this story turned out. If I keep going, I might cease making sense, because talking about it is riling me up so much. But damn, people reference 50 Shades as a prime example of abuse and consent and an unbalanced power dynamic...no, look here, y'all. Look right the fuck here.
This book is about so much more than a manage a trois. Of course you get the amazing love scenes between two or all three of these women that'll make you weep. You also get the story of how Jane and Caitlyn come to look for a third in their relationship. Within relationships people grow and and change and they discover that the change in one individual within the relationship changes the foundation of the relationship. They discover that a third is the missing ingredient. A chance meeting at an airport lounge gives Becca a chance at a life she's always wanted after a bad break up. Upon exploring her relationship with Jane and Caitlyn, Becca believes she has found the partners she has been looking for. After a brief honeymoon period her past comes knocking on the door. She must face her past in order to move on. Jane and Caitlyn have made mistakes that they must try to fix. Will Becca open up or will she fall back into old habits? There's so much going on in This book that I couldn't put it down. This has easily become one of my favorites. I highly recommend it!
This was learning about polyamorous relationships vs. what I thought the book would be about a one or two night threesome. Plus The abusive monogamous relationship that Becca is recovering from. The story is another way to consider how relationships may work.
What did i just listen to in this 16hours book?! This is the first book by the author(s) i’ve tried and i’ve got to say i am pleasantly surprised. I thought i would be bored at somepoint in this 16hour long book but i was surprised i am not. And surprised why not.
This is quite different from the books i usually read/listen to. The first being the length. That aside, i am surprised there is an asian character in the story, and that asian character weirdly spoke the range of languages that i know where i live-Singapore. I didnt think HK people would speak hokkien or malay. But anyway, that was a surprise. I chuckled everytime this was injected into the story.
Also when you look at the covers of the author you would think there’ll be full of explicit sex/ BDSM but wow no, this book does not. The sex scenes feel different from what i’ve read so far, they are not explicit at all. However, the feeling is weird. It feels to me like the MCs are kissing and kissing/touching and then there is a mention of a climax and the story moves on. Sometimes it felt short and not much of a build? There is not much of a very specific build like in other lesfic books.
I think the narrator certainly does a great job with the dialogue. I would listen to the narrator read me the phone book in Jane’s voice. The “hokkien/canto” swear words arent done on point but who cares. The rest of the book is done fabulously.
Wow. I was not expecting everything that came with this book. It turned out to be much more of a character development story than anything, which was done extremely well. Caitlyn and Jane have been together for years, but they realized that they needed a third person to bring their relationship to a higher level. In comes Rebecca, who seems to be the perfect, subservient woman to complete their trifecta. But what develops is a story of secrets, weaknesses, and trust...or lack thereof. Jane the dominant has a secret that could tear apart her relationship with Cait. Cait the switch has some deep-seeded jealousy that might turn into a problem for the threesome. And Becca's past will creep up at the worst time and threaten to break down her walls she's built so carefully. It's a great story, guys. Seriously. And it's incredibly well-written. And the ending is the best.
My only complaint, and it's a minor one, is that the inner monologuing and descriptive paragraphs are just a bit too much. Giant paragraphs distract from the best scenes...especially the intimate ones. You have to dig around a bit and pick out little pieces of scenes to really put together an image of what's actually going on. Other than that, it's going down as one of my favorite stories so far this year.
It finally happened, I finally rated a lesbian book less than 5 stars 😩 It's going to be hard to review this book, as whilst I really really enjoyed it, it wasn't what I wanted it to be and I found it to be quite repetitive. It's a chunky book at 580 pages but it is told from all three ladies' POV which is a plus.
I wanted lesbian thruple smut and there were only a few scenes scattered throughout the book, with most not going into much depth. I was very confused about aspects of the story too. Firstly, the original two had only had sex once and then as the story unfolded there were random bits like they watched porn together and couldn't keep their hands off each other, and then we find out they were married? There were also quite a few editing errors unfortunately.
I just feel like this was all a bit too 'deep' for 3 people who had only been together a couple of months. And yes, I know, us lesbians move quickly and feel emotions more deeply, but it just got a bit boring in places.
If you're not a wlw then I wouldn't recommend this one as I don't think you'll appreciate it and think it's deserving of the 4 stars without that; that's probably the only bit that won me over.
“She knew what it was like to create a kind of purity not found in other relationships. Wasn’t that part of the joy of love, sex, and romance? Exploring boundaries and challenging preconceived notions of what love was supposed to be?”
“Rebecca was the rare soul who sought out the kind of lesbian relationships that could either end with her soul in chains or her heart soaring free above the clouds. She was used to the chains holding her down. She needed someone to break them and let her fly.” + • + • + • + 📍 A spectacularly stunning story of love that brings three women together & makes them whole.
This is truly one of the best BDSM narratives I have personally ever read. It emphasizes the emotional & mental experiences as the priority, with the physical as the avenue or agent accessing & achieving it.
The truth can made a delicate relationship finally balance.
The characters of this story Becca, Caitly and Jane each have to find a balance. They know what they want but have to express their need to make what they have work. I struggled with all the pages of individual thought and little dialogue together. It made it seem unnecessarily long. Yet, to realize the only way this threesome could work is when they were really open too each other's heart was brilliant. I came to love Caitlyn, admire Jane and cheer for Becca. Each had so much to give this unique relationship. Manage a Trois is difficult subject to embrace but I saw such delight and possibilities as each woman grew. It is such good read.
The main draw to the story for me was the dynamics in Jane & Caitlyn's and relationship. Both are very likeable, strong, feisty ladies who know exactly what they want. The author's usual style of detailed exposition (which I've gotten used to a few books ago) really gives a sense of history between them. The weak link for me is Rebecca, who isn't really all that interesting other than her background with the ex. Her notable qualities are neediness and insecurity! Maybe she'll redeem herself in the sequel though. Also, one thing that really irks me is that "Jane" on the cover is nothing like how she's described in the book! The ethnicity and haircut lol. I had to type "hong kong short haired women" into Google image search just to picture what she should look like!
Ménage a Trois by Cynthia Dane and Hildred Billings It is not always easy to find a book about polyamorous relationships that speaks truthfully about pitfalls such as secrets and jealousy. The focus of this novel is on Rebecca a damaged submissive who is escaping an abusive long-term relationship. who has just come out of an abusive long-term relationship. Rebecca finds a job working for 2 strong women. Jane is a Domme and Caitlyn is a switch. They enter into a triad relationship. This is where we begin getting into the turmoil created by Secrets and jealousy. The book seems to me to be overly long. It is very slow in development. It is worth the read. I did skip many pages but I like the end but also found that to be long. I will give this book 4 stars but probably should say 3.
i did stay to the end, but i have to say my beleif is that 3 somes don't work someone allways gets hurt, i would have liked to see a lot more of what mable did to poor rebecca, so i could realy hate her, t6he resque of rebecca in the club wasn't strong inough for me the way caitlyn apeared to be going after mable came to nothing, but ultimatly only from my feelings for becca and caitlyn i'd have loved for them to end up together, one small thing when becca went to caitlyn and just layed her head in caitlyns lap was just pricless, it wasn't kinky it was just some one needing comforting and that she got from caitlyn, but wasn't happening in this book, sadly.
It's a good thing I got this book on sale. The subject matter is interesting. I like reading about lesbians, BDSM, billionaires and Asian heritage people. I even liked how the author portrayed it in this story. However, the book was riddled with typos. Every chapter or two, I had to correct a word that was either used wrong or spelt wrong. Also, the sex scenes were lack-lustre. I mentioned on a review of another book of theirs that I read about these same issues and it seems that it is pervasive across their whole catalogue (based on three samples so this might actually be hyperbole).
Loved, loved, loved this story!!! It covered the wide expanse of emotions from the heights of love and laughter to the depths of pain and loss. Wonderful storytelling. Jane, Caitlyn and Becca are not one dimensional characters in a book but real, multi dimensional women who are real and broken, just like all of us are. But they choose to be together, living and healing each other while fulfilling their dreams of being with the person's who fill the part of themselves that makes them complete and whole. I didn't want the story to end!!!
I absolutely loved this book about finding love the real kind the one that lets you trust someone with your body and soul it just happens to be two people. Rebecca has suffered so badly in her last relationship that she is really torn up but a job interview has opened the door to her true found happiness along with trust and security. This is a love story with some desperately needed healing I just loved it. Jane and Caitlyn have found their perfect third and will be patient and understanding to keep their perfect third that completes them, Rebecca.
What a superb start to an ever evolving relationship between 3 stunning females.
Then the final third went downhill fast and furious, and epilogue Utterly went off theme and created such a huge let down.
In the final third the author lost the methodology of each of the characters. A wonderful intriguing Domme subservient relationship descended in to a non fetish dull everyday girlie chinwag with no content, meaning, nor the erotic excitement of the first 2 sections.
The three some storyline was a reading experience that the main characters were involved with was an eye opening experience. Cait, Jane and Rebecca Were well developed and portrayed as caring and loving people compared to the Mable character who abused poor Becca and almost ruined the relationship between Cait and Jane that would not abuse her. Overall this was a very very enjoyable experience that I would highly recommend to others.
I was rather apprehensive in picking up this book ever since my last polyamorous relationship completely shattered me, but it is safe to say that Dane and her writing is the epitome of what fiction stands for- to fuel the imagination and to help the reality. This book is a great insight into the life of a throuple relationship ( as opposed to a unicorn centred one). Highly recommend as well as an insight into how people should communicate with each other
Three ladies trying to find their way is not the easiest of tasks. Jane and Caitlyn were in a committed relationship but then comes Rebecca. She was the balance they needed. Situations added to a lot of drama. Read their story and discover what the menage a trois was all about. I think you'll enjoy it. I know I sure did.
An e.enjoyable reading of three ladies, each with their quirks and personality. Loved the story, pain has no limit, bad memories can ruin any type of relationship. I
It takes a certain type of person to live a three some relationship, it is possible and this story tells you how. Read this story, loved it.
Was read earlier in the year in my confort reading period.
This is my second time reading this, and I have to say it's one of my favorites. This is complete escampism for me and whenever I am in a reading slump or depressive episode this makes me forget about things for a while. Not a perfect book or story but it's light, quick, and fun.
I have mixed feelings about this book. I like the flaws all three MCs had, but really struggled with Becca. I was good with her personality and issues which a lot of time was spent on. In the end she had it all pulled together, but I would’ve like to hear more about that instead of a quick epilogue.
