This is about sensei (teacher) who teach Ethics subject, and that each of his students have some problems and he need to confront them.

My first impression is that this would be a violence and gore kinda manga. But oh boi, I was wrong. This is quite dark but in a hopeful way. Various words in this manga are relatable, depression, anxiety. All the students problem that could have happen in real life. I think this concept is nice, sensei keep highlight the topics of ethics as it is important in life.

The artstyle not really my fav, but its really fit with the concept which is dark, and unique. As I get used to the artstyle I think its getting prettier. is that makes sense?

Also, each of the chapter contain different story, different lesson and different characters. Although its kinda nice to see more story to be unveil, but I find some chapter and story of character are left hanging which make me feel unsatisfied. It keep making me want to know what happen to them next? But then, they just move on to a new character.

This is so beautifully written and expressed..
There are some unpleasent sexual parts and the art style is a bit too much but it doesn't make this less of an entertaining, magnificent work.
It tickles the mind, calms it, and pushes one to be more patient and open-hearted.
I really enjoyed it.

2.5/5

"Ethics won't come up often in your daily lives, like history or geography. It isn't versatile like mathematics, or practical like English. There's basically no job that will require you learn anything related to ethics. If I had to say when it would be useful... it would be when death approaches you."

The concept is very simple-- an ethics teacher, flawed and mysterious as a person, trying to teach a bunch of less-than-enthusiastic high school students why asking questions and learning about "how to live" even matters.

It is split up into almost... vignettes? About a different student in every section. Naturally, that means some are far more compelling than others. Either way, it's interesting to see how Takayanagi connects with different kids in different ways and changes their lives for the better. Anyone who knows me knows I have a massive soft spot for teacher narratives (Lean on Me, Assassination Classroom, Super 30... the list goes on).

I really liked "Sleepy" the most-- I enjoyed how Takayanagi shows human emotions in being frustrated with a student at first because of poor behavior and he self-corrects to try to help him with his issues at home so that he can learn to connect to others. I enjoy how Takayanagi is open and receptive and forgiving to his students, but not a doormat and retains his own personality and knows when to draw boundaries with someone instead of being a saint. It makes him a more realistic character overall.

I also really liked "The Ideal Teacher"-- I thought it was a bit mid at first, but learning that Takayanagi became a chainsmoker all because he wanted to go into the smoking room to talk to one of his college professors, compared to the parallel of him holding off even when he's getting nicotine withdrawals because Kyouichi wanted to speak to him... chef's kiss

My only issue with the series is how some of the female characters are sexualized. I know that it's part of their personalities and they are promiscuous as a reaction to sexual trauma, but I think it could've been handled better and it falls flat and comes across as exploitative in some ways.

I wasn't going to read the next book after this one, but "Sleepy" really got me and made me want to see more, so I'm going to try the next one as well. Not sure if I'll read the whole series mostly because I'm not a big fan of episodic stuff, but if the vignettes start to create some sort of overarching character arc, I think I might be interested.

Overall, pretty solid start, but my feelings about the series as a whole will be determined by whether or not there is any development in the next installment.

Explicit content. Please note that this manga is for mature audiences only. You were warned.

TW/CW: sex, nudity, underage relationships, sexual assault (r*), mature themes, violence , suicidal tendencies, bullying, strong language

The Good Place, one of my favourite TV shows, sparked my interest in academic philosophy! Chidi is the best. I may need to re-watch it. I am suddenly missing everyone. It’s definitely a show that touched many hearts and souls.

Learning about the core tenets of ethics is undoubtedly fascinating, especially when done in a visually appealing manner. I appreciate dramatic, educative manga that forces you to confront reality. Although I dislike depictions of SA, I like how it is being handled in this manga. I also enjoyed the fact that each chapter is dedicated to different characters. We get more insights into not only the teacher but the students as well. Chapter 4, is by far, my favourite. The idea of "arete" greatly inspires me to lead a happy life according to my own rules. As long as it doesn't bother others and makes us happy, let's live our own truth. I’m hoping to get physical copies of these soon.

I will be continuing.

Manga | Ethics | Philosophy

• Plot:
From Now On We Begin Ethics Vol 1 MC is a high school ethics teacher who encounters students with issues and uses ethics to solve problems.

• What I Liked:
The teacher influences the changes in one of the promiscuous girls' life direction and prevents another from committing suicide. The teacher talks about living without damaging your soul and stands up for a girl with a deep connection to her plushie.

• What Didn’t Work for Me:
Most of the females in this series so far deal with attempted SA or SA. The teacher is a smoker.

• Themes / Ideas:
Sex, suicide, bullying, plushies as a protector & ethics.

• Who I’d Recommend It To:
Those interested in reading philosophy in manga format.

• Overall Thoughts:
I don’t like how the female characters in this series are portrayed, but I guess the mangaka is using them to share ethical and philosophical quotes.

This manga made me cry. I think I need a moment. Now see, I don't have the words to write a review better than this at the moment, so all I can say is I enjoyed this manga. It made me feel and think. Here are some of my greatest takeaways without any context:

- Time and place.
- As long as you're up for it.
- Live a good life that doesn't damage your soul.
- Not free, but not anxious either.
