This series actually includes a fifth story recently published called Samurai's Lover that I found the weakest in the bunch and which is not included in this box set.

Great world building and full of crossed lovers who deserve a break!

Format: Kindle Edition
I read each of these stories as they were released individually and, IMO, they range in rating from 4 stars to 4.5 stars. I read almost every Alix Nichols that is released. Though I prefer her France-set romances, she's built an interesting world here, with evil autocrats, brave and self-sacrificing heroes and strong women. The villains are really teacherous and into violence and disregard for the general population. Cyborg warriors and dragon shifters add to the fight between good and evil.

Here are my more detailed reviews on each volume in the set.

The Cyborg's Lady (4 stars)
🚀Keiron's forced vacation introduces a pivotal woman and raises hopes for romance💕🔥
May 4, 2018
👍Brief, well-written prequel introducing 🌌 interplanetary cyborg warrior and enforcer Keiron, who plays a significant role as the next volumes in this serial unfold (when I read this I had already read the first two installments in the main series). Nice to know he has his own romantic backstory that will surely resurface at some point.

Other than Keiron's appearance, the main point I got from this prequel was the background of how the planets were settled by Ra godlike aliens that brought humans into the mix and had a connection with dragons. This background may prove useful down the line. Like the later installments, action adventure, heat and romance populated by a variety of beings with individual super powers (some natural, some manufactured) feature for a classic sci-fi romantic adventure.

The Traitor's Bride (4 stars)
Can a lowly laundress save a hero's life and capture his heart?!😱
March 26, 2018
Very suspenseful romance with Areg Sebi, a persecuted and tortured war hero who is too popular and out spoken for his own good, and Etana, the innocent young servant girl who tries to save him. The MCs had chemistry and I liked the surprises that kept cropping up as the hero went from one horrible situation to the next. Etana shows surprising grit despite her sheltered background. Their growing closeness and tender moments provided a great contrast to the action-packed battle scenes.

The author has provided a sizeable cast of secondary characters, including a sadistic police chief, his power-hungry boss and their minions, Etana's supportive brother and employers, priestesses and regular folk inclined to help the hero, and a space commando and his crew looking for unofficial ways to stage a timely rescue. I have read a number of Alix Nichol's contemporary France-based romances and have always greatly enjoyed them. This sci fi romance is very different because she has had to build a whole new world for the characters and the plot is more action adventure than pure romance. I still enjoyed it and, as always with her stories, it's well-written.

The story is definitely a serialized tale and ends on a major cliffhanger so be prepared to read a sequel to learn how things end for Areg Sebi and Etana.

The Commander's Captive (4.5 stars)
💕🔥🚀A great adventure continues!😱
April 19, 2018
👍4.5 stars
:-) I think I liked this second book in Alix Nichols' new🚀 sci-fi💗 romance series even better than the first. That may be because I am now more familiar with the characters and world the author built in the first story. The MCs from the first story, which ended in a cliffhanger in regards to their relationship, are back and working their way toward a reunion, but the MCs here are Jancel, beleaguered military commander, and Nyssa, his prisoner under house arrest and the beloved sister of Areg, the hero from the first book who everyone assumes Jancel betrayed.

Jancel and Nyssa can't resist each other, despite Nyssa's belief that her long unrequited affection for Jancel undermines her loyalty to her brother's memory. This internal conflict provides for great tension. But there is also great passion and heat despite Nyssa's intentions to merely taunt Jancel as payback for her brother's capture and torture.

Simultaneously, we get a great political intrigue story, with the evil police commander, the power-obsessed governor, and a new cyborg whose close work for the governor seems suspect. I found the warped workings of this trio just as enjoyable (though admittedly creepy) as the romance!I

In sum, a great example of the sci-fi romance genre and thoroughly enjoyable. Though the two principal romances have HFN endings, there are plenty more characters to highlight in subsequent stories, like Etana's brother and Jancel's trusted allies. And will the evil Ultek and the governor get their just desserts? Can't wait to see what Nichols has in store as the series continues.:-)

The Dragon's Woman (4 stars)
Geru, who are you really and will your secret destroy you and those you love?
July 31, 2018
Lots of action, cruel scientists, evil politicians, all aimed at Geru Gokk, oldest son in a noble family who has no idea he is a "rich blood" with marvelous special powers that others seek to control. Marye, his childhood friend with a long-time crush, is sucked into the drama as Geru"s secret is revealed to her and her growing romantic connection with Geru offers a supplemental way for the scientists to force his compliance. There's steam, too, but it's largely a space adventure with winged cyborgs, magical and manufactured beasts, and huge plans for world domination with freedom fighters holding out hope for a better future. Exciting stuff, but I believe I liked the earlier stories in this series a bit more.

I am not a fan of multiple epilogues and this story had two, one directly connected to the story (fine) and one that was not. I did not see how the second epilogue fit in this novella as over 90 percent of it continued the previous book with characters not covered in Geru and Marye's story. It was an obvious attempt to continue the larger series but, in my opinion, it was misplaced and left the book ending on a confusing note..

The fourth full volume is not included in the set but my take on it appears below for those thinking about buying it to finish out the collection:

The Samurai's Lover (3.5 stars)
🚀Is an orphan from a bad part of town worthy of a hero's regard?😯
March 3, 2019
3.5 🌟stars🚀
This story is brimming with action and political intrigue, with a 💕romance bridging two sides of the tracks at its center. I liked the romance, especially the kind and gutsy heroine. The hero less so because he's a bit too rigid and priggishly judgmental. There's disdain that turns to an irresistible attraction. The action-packed climax was truly suspenseful and thrilling. Look for karmic twists involving a villain's wife and nick of time unexpected surprise appearances. The ending was upbeat and resolved some long outstanding issues.

😟 My main issue with this story is the number of characters (too many!) and the detailed political intrigue. I had read the previous books in the series and there's no way I could forget the principal villains. But it's been awhile since the other books were released and I read them. This book has no quick summary to refresh the memory about happenings and characters, principal and minor, from the previous books. As I had no desire to go back and re-read them to catch up there were a lot of details and interactions with those older characters that went right over my head. In addition to the back glossary with a few terms and a timeline, this book would be a lot easier to read with a list and brief description of the many characters.

I read complimentary advance copies of the books in this set; this is my voluntary and honest review.

The Cyborg's Lady

Though it is the prequel, havent read this one yet... so will update my review after I have finished it!

The Traitor's Bride

Areg Sebi, a young and decorated war hero has spoken out too loud against the current government.
Our story begins when Etana, a lowly laundry maiden, finds herself watching him being flogged quite brutally. She refuses to believe the story that he is a traitor, but is powerless to help. Or is she... when the date is set for the next public flogging a week later, Etana vow to find a way to save the man she admires.

I have to say, I was really pleasantly surprised by the book! :)

World-building was good, scenes and environments were detailed enough for the imagination to have some leeway and fill in the blanks.
While this is a sci-fi (honestly not my usual cup of tea), there wasn't that much sci-fi going on, being pretty focussed on the story between Etana and Areg. We had some cyborgs, spaceships and other planets, but more in a setting of the stage for the coming books kind of way.

Character development was decent. Etana, a lowly menial, rises up to save the man she first admires and later falls in love with. Areg, a disillusioned war veteran, has seen his fair share of suffering and carries the guilt of fallen comrades. He slowly but surely returns to life thanks to Etana's caring.

All in all I liked it! Likeable characters that felt real, the romance was slow, steady and bittersweet. This were not just 2 people fated to be together and that was that, no, throughout the story you feel that the author has thought things through and wanted to capture this story between them as good as possible.

The Commander's Captive

While this book wasn't as good as the first (in my honest opinion), I still liked it a lot! We got the continuation of Areg and Etana while Nyssa and Jancel were battling out their love/hate affair.

Character development was, good. We already knew a bit about Nyssa and Jancel from the previous instalment, but it was great to get a lot more insight into Jancel's reasoning. We got some more insight into our villains as well (I didn't really pointed that out in my previous review). We get to know why the governor does the things he does, how depraved our police chief truly is and even a little more insight into the hive-mind of the modified cyborgs. The continued development for Etana and Areg was very well done. Looking forward to seeing all of these characters evolve in later books!

Pacing and flow were very good. This instalment feels to have a slower pace as the previous, though this does not mean it gets boring! A lot of time and effort went into the interaction of our cast, old and new.

The Dragon's Woman

This book felt a lot different than the first two books, more diverse yet still very focused on our main cast.

World-building was good, environments and scenes were well described by the author. For me it did feel a lot more fantasy/PNR than sci-fi/PNR.

Character development was good, we get to experience Geru's despair and guilt over what he did in the first book, we get to know his dragon form and its pretty singular thoughts ;-), guiding him over to his best friend (and mate) Marye. Geru and Mayre were well worked out, though I had some issues with Marye not freaking out at least a tiny bit when seeing Geru's half- or even full dragon form.
The rest of the cast was a bit on the back burner for this book, we had some snippets here and there, but overall, the main storyline and events did not progress too much, which is fine as the main focus was the romance between the two and some behind the scenes info from our 'villains'.

Pacing and flow were very good without too long breaks in between the action and the continuation. A good spread of conversations, action and romance.

All in all it was better than I expected. I was afraid that having a dragon all of a sudden would ruin the build-up of the world, but it made it more interesting and diverse. With the knowledge we got in this book, many more avenues are open to explore and I very much look forward to doing just that!

The books themselves were well written with no (noticeable) errors. And yes, this series contains sex (if that is important to you).

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of these books and found them to be a very easy and enjoyable read, even when not into sci-fi! :)

Parisian Sci-Fi

From the queen of Paris-based, snarky RomComs comes a series of delightful SciFi novels and novellas that are, at heart, also romances. I read each of these as it came out and am happy to share a few thoughts about each story--but the whole is, not unexpectedly, greater than the sum of its parts, especially as this is an ongoing saga.

***
The Cyborg's Lady (Keepers of Xereill, #0.5)

This prequel novella makes a delightful introduction to the series, leaving us with myriad possibilities to look forward to but no loose ends. We learn about several of the variations in "humanity" as represented in this look forward to terraformed worlds and hyperfast space travel and are treated to a short love story. A satisfying teaser!

***
The Traitor's Bride (Keepers of Xereill, #1)

This was actually published before the prequel and my introduction to the series. We have multiple planets, varying levels of technical and technological sophistication, civilizations ranging from medieval to modern+, power mad evil-doers, national and interplanetary politics, bionics, and "magic" all wrapped up in one (full-length) novel which concludes its action but ends in a bit of a cliff-hanger.

***
The Commander's Captive (Keepers of Xereill, #2)

Following a nuclear disaster on their planet, the surviving population had agreed to eschew all but Level One technology --not even cellphones! Thus the majority of the population lives a rather medieval life and the political power struggles are crude, heavy handed and brutal, as is life for the havenots; and it's not really so sweet for the haves. (Think eastern Europe just post WWII, with Stalin threatening from outside as powerplays go on internally.) Meanwhile this planet is one of many in the League of Realms (will it prove to be as underpowered/-funded as the League of Nations or more closely resemble the United Nations?).

All this sounds rather oppressive and, although the politics are, the story is not. The drama moves along swiftly and believably with glimpses of the sly humor and romances of equals in temperament, if not in station, for which the author is known. The surprise is the complex and multi-textured universe created.

***
The Dragon's Woman (Keepers of Xereill, #3)

Shifting Hurts! In this exciting and imaginative series we are introduced to varieties of normal and paranormal species, including those bionically implanted, in a sprawling Sci-Fi realm which has long past absorbed humanity. The political scheming on Hente continues to escalate and the resistance gains numbers and strength. (The action is sufficiently self-contained to serve as a standalone tale but works much better in context with the previous stories, each of which is a romance beset by the turbulence of the times.) Borrowing heavily--but not directly--from existing unrest on our "blue marble," we are given the opportunity to watch as dysfunctional governments flail from one incompetency to the next while the League of Realms endeavors to hold together a tenuous peace. And on a more personal level, Geru must learn to become one with his inner dragon as he forms a mating bond.

Below is a review of two of the books to give you an example of the great story you’ll find in this Box Set!

*** Reviewing THE CYBORG’S LADY — PREQUEL) ***
Colonel Keiron Yaggar, head of the LOR Enforcer Cyborgs, couldn’t take his eyes off the young woman staring out of the viewport at the comet passing them. He was on a forced vacation to relax, and with some encouragement from a fellow passenger, he went over to the woman and introduced himself. However, she was already aware of who he was and who he worked for. As a government investigator, Linni apparently kept herself well informed. She excused herself and walked away. Their ship landed on Sovyda for their day-long tour. She reflected that next week, after her job interview, she could end up being Keiron’s boss! If not for that, well, no good fantasizing.

The tour was very enlightening. They saw frescoes of the Ra ancestors before the Human Infusion Era which brought in Terran females to mate with them since their own people were somehow not producing females anymore. But then they were shown a new discovery area, just recently found. It showed 3 statues which they determined represented 3 phases of an even more ancient Ra which supported the dragon shifter “myth” that now looked to have been true. The one statue actually showed a tail and the rib bones extending for dragon wings. But they were assuming this to be myth and wishful thinking, just like the Origin Legend that said the Ra descended from dragons. Then their guide led them back to the bus to go to dinner.

Linni has an assignment here, however, so she dashes off to gather information about an illegal trafficking auction. Once she has the venue and date, she would join the others at dinner. Little did she know that Keiron might be taking more of an interest in her work than she imagined.

This book is a prequel to this Box Set series and gives us some background information as well as the history of how Keiron and Linni met. It will certainly raise the reader’s interest level in jumping into this series! The character development was done very well, allowing the reader to get to know them, and to know what to expect from them in the trials that are coming. The story line was very good and the fast pace and action kept the reader fully engaged.

*** Reviewing THE TRAITOR’S BRIDE - BOOK 1 ***
Lord Areg Sebi is a military hero and member of a noble house who is falsely accused of treason and quickly condemned to death after enduring public lashings and a forced confession. Unexpected aid from a laundry maid, Etana Tidryn, is instrumental in allowing his escape temporarily.

There are lessons to be learned here about government corruption and power being misused. There are so many characters and so many things going on! It was interesting enough that the reader will be glad to have the rest of the series available to keep reading!

The Cyborg's Lady
There’s just enough in this to make me badly want more. This is a very quick little prequel that sets the stage for some of the scenes in the first book. I read book one before I read this, and it doesn’t seem to be essential to read about Keiron and Linnie before starting the rest of the series. Mind you, now that I’ve seen what brought the pair together and witnessed more of their chemistry, I’m a bit desperate to see this pair get their forever. Right now, their careers and events seem stacked against them. I’m anxious to see what comes next in the series.
The Traitor's Bride
I found that this book nicely avoids the most common pitfalls that can plague the first in a new series. It drops us right into the heart of the action without spending pages and pages explaining the background before we get there. It then provides us with that background in nice conversational snippets as the story moves along without becoming pedantic about it. It’s populated with interesting characters that I look forward to finding out more about. Though, their good versus evil natures are a bit simplistic at this point; most of the characters we see in action seem very obvious which side they fall on. Knowing that this is part of a series of connected stories, I was prepared for the ‘bigger picture’ not to be fully resolved by the end. I wasn’t prepared for the abrupt and sudden stop where this book does end. After watching the relationship developing between Etana and Areg, I was hoping for something more for them. However, where we’re left makes me very anxious to see what comes next.
The Commander's Captive
I don’t even know what to say. The political thriller aspect of this series is even more compelling than the romance between the lead characters. And since that’s hotter than the surface of a star, that’s saying something. I love that this book gives us the answers to what happened to Etana and Areg after the ending of the previous book, because it was driving me batty not knowing. I thought that some of the chemistry between Nyssa and Jancel felt a little rushed. However, as Jancel was the first one of her captors to be kind to Nyssa, I think there’s a bit of Stockholm Syndrome hurrying the emotions along. This has a ‘softer’ cliff-hanger ending but there’s still a lot of unanswered questions out there and I can’t wait to learn more.
The Dragon's Woman
A dragon? You have my attention. And the author was able to keep with a twisty little plot filled with political machinations, evil scientific experiments, and a One True Love. I’ve suspected for a while that Geru and Marye would make a power couple. I just never anticipated that it would be power like this. I loved getting the chance to ‘check in’ on previous heroines and their heroes and I’m dying to learn more about what’s really going on with Boggond and Horbell.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.

Read three of the stories individually and kept me interested all the time with the strong protagonists and the intense and exciting descriptions and narrations that kept me with eyes wide open waiting for evil to stroke and the heroes to retaliate. Loved the suspense, the mystery behind the magic and the twists in the stories. Power struggling, corruption, betrayal, violence, distraught and passion were presented all the time.
The Traitors Bride
Fighting for his ideals and facing the corrupted had cost Areg Sebi his freedom. Etana Tidryn, laundy maid, had not rights in this society but she was intended to do her part and join Areg in the fight against injustice.
The Commander’s Captive
Ashamed but decided to do what he thought was the best to protect those he cares for, Commander Jancel Heidd was risking his life and his heart.
The Dragon’s Woman
Overwhelmed by guilt Geru left his family to an unknown destination. Startled by strange changes, he trusted his instincts and went after the one Ra-dragon knew.

Oh. My. Gosh!!! All four books at this price?! LOVED every one of them…
Especially good price if you want to catch up with the series and if you only read one or two of the books when they sold separately.
Love this world. I read them as they came out and I must admit, I would have preferred to have read them one after the other…the characters reappear so you can feel more IN the story, if you know what I mean. The stories are intertwined but each will end with a very satisfying HEA for that particular couple. All captivating, fast-paced, well-written PNR where there are the haves and the have nots, some with special powers and others envious of them. Just writing this reminds me how good this series was. If you like heated paranormal romance with intrigue, read these books. You will not be disappointed.
I volunteered to review all of the above ARC’s when published.

Not enough closer for me

Ideas the Keepers of Xereill 0.5-3 I enjoyed most of the characters, the world building and the way the author wove in being a shape shifter, special powers and cyborgs. There was passion and lots of action and adventure. What brought down the rating for me was the amount of uncertainty for all the characters and how each book relied on the previous and still at the end of 3 books no closer. That kind of series is just not for me. The couple in the first book still struggle to be together and I know there is another novella about them but I'm not going to read it or any of the others due to too many disappointments.

I love the Keepers of Xereill! I love that each book follows mainly one couple, but we have an overall story arc that continues to grow with each book. The characters are unique and have amazing depth and chemistry. The whole world is a creation of genius. The overall story line keeps you guessing and wondering what's going to happen next. Just when I think I know where the story is going, boom! another curve ball! The series is full of passion, family, friendships, connection, mystery, suspense, and love! I can't wait to see where Alix takes the stories within this world!

Interesting but disappointing

This is a very interesting series. I would have given it 4 stars except for something the author interjected in the 2nd story. Very abhorrent and in my mind absolutely no need for her to have done so, unless trying to make a political point and show support for a very despicable act. In the storyline, neither party would have been at risk and indeed wound up safe and secure so there was NO need to go there. Shame.

I love the Keepers of Xereill series. This is a box set of the first 3 books plus a prequel to the series. Alix Nichols creates a unique and interesting alien world. The books are steamy, action packed - each book in the set can be read as a standalone, but there is also a story that weaves through all the books and once you start, you'll want to continue so you can follow the story to the end.
