This is the best of about a dozen art instruction books I have read, at least concerning pen and ink sketching. The sections on acheiving tone and texture using hatching had step by step instructions and exercises. After performing the exercises, I at last feel confident I will be able to use hatching effectively with more practice. The section on composition also expanded on my understanding in comparison to other books. She explained and illustrated framing, balance, and focal point thoroughly. There were also exercises for adding color, and unexpected light to a composition, with step by step instruction but less detailed explanation. I highly recomment this book to beginning sketchers like me.
