Kit ...

The one man she vowed to love, honor, and obey ...

The one man that can make her drop to her knees with a single command ...

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Calavera is part two of Luna and Kit's story. This installment featured a good bit of action, drama, some suspense, a little romance, and a twisting plot! There was much clarified about Luna's past and the Kingmaker's vision for her once she was placed in Kit's care. This book also revealed more about Luna's relationship with her peers and there was additional insight about the complex nature of the Kingmaker.

The players from the Den of Mercenaries showed up for some action and there was much packed into this book!

Also featured in this story? The Wild Bunch crew who first appeared in Nix.

 photo IMG_4425_zpsnsrowf0u.jpg

This series has to be read in order, as Calavera is book four in this seven-part series, with Skorpion's story to be released next. The CODA chapter at the end of this book only fueled the fire as to what can be expected from the Kingmaker in the upcoming books!

Book One: Red.
Book Two: Celt.
Book Three: Nix.

3.75 stars ⭐ RTC

Downgrading to 3.5 stars, rounding down.

It's been a few days since I read this & the only thing I remember is it being nice that this clarified what happened to Elias & Luna from the Kingmaker Saga (I read the Kingmaker Saga before reading this series).

While only 3 stars, I fully recommend this series, and this book after reading Nix (which I enjoyed very much). This installment I felt did not live up to Nix and was slightly underwhelming. I don't know what it was but this simply felt like a continuation of the saga all these characters are going through...while the character arc Luna went through in Nix was much more impactful. A part of this reason might be because I knew the other side to all these scenes from reading the Kingmaker Saga. If you're starting this series first, this book would feel more exciting/new.

Also, I've been very generous with my five star ratings for these books, despite consistent editing issues. A reason for this is that London Miller has done something I've never come across before in the mafia/organized crime romance genre. This is a plot driven series, with a full cast of characters that all have important roles & are fascinating to read about. The suspense, mystery...I feel like I'm reading a crime thriller just with emotionally moving romances being the overarching themes. There's so much more depth here than any other mafia/organized crime books I've come across in romance. Praise aside, there are editing issues, and finally they grated on my nerves in this installment.

One example: Typos, incorrect pronoun usage, & blurry scene transitions. (One fuzzy scene transition goes from Luna & Uilleam being in her new apartment Nix bought to all of a sudden being on assignment at an Opera....no transition whatsoever and I was confused for a minute).

I think what's happening is that London Miller has so much craft & skill as a writer she's likely getting all praise from her author friends/Alpha readers/beta readers that look over her manuscript. Also, for any editor she hires, unless they've read all her other series and paid close attention, they won't be able to catch the continuity errors. I've completely given up on the timeline and I just pretend it makes sense to me.

I 100% plan on finishing this series. Despite my criticism I can't remember the last time I was so emotionally invested in not just the main characters, but side characters as well. When a story is so gripping I become lost in it--I'm able to look past errors and just let them roll off my shoulder. Now that I've read quite a few of London Miller's books...I have to address it. It was distracting for me in this installment especially, and since this was just a continuation of Luna & Kit (less epic feeling than Nix) they stuck out to me more here.

Editing to add: If anyone is reading this series, and comes across this review...I do 100% recommend this book. Why? While this book isn't perfect, we do get some resolution to Kit & Luna, and I'm the type of reader that needs resolution to the stories I read. The big reason to read this book? Skorpion. He has been one of my favorite side characters since starting the Kingmaker Saga & has an important role in this book, that clearly adds context to his story, the next book in this series. I ate up all the scenes with Skorpion. So love him.

Another winner.

I have read, thus far, every book London has written up until this point (and a book beyond, but I am getting there). Full disclosure, I wrote a series with her too.

BUT ... I wanted to say that because man, the growth in this author is unreal. And her skill with dialogue is hard to find in a lot of authors. I'd even include me in that, too. She keeps honing her ability to write these books, and it shows.

I was happy to see a resolution for Kit and Luna. Hoping to see something in the future from them (babies, London, I want babies).

The plots are intricate. There's more going on than you realize. You get invested (and if you don't feel invested, it's because you're not paying attention, or you haven't been reading the books in the right order, IMO). You get invested in their lives, and it carries you through to other books, and other series. That's a talent in and of itself.

Mish and Lauren were a favorite series of mine (I am biased to the series we wrote together, honestly) but the Den is stepping up.

Read the books.

Jesus Christ take the wheel
My feelings guys! All over the place!
She did it, she fucking did it again, London Miller is taking no prisioners with her Den of Mercenaries books.

I stayed up so late reading it never mind I couldn’t function like a proper human being the next day and yet at the same time I couldn’t bring myself to finish it because come on guys how am I supposed to keep going with my life after such a masterpiece!

Ok, fangirling aside, we finally have CALAVERA , the conclusion of Kit and Luna's story but let's not be fooled my friends this book is definitely not the end for the Mercenaries, it's just one more step to resolve all the unanswered questions in the Den of Mercenaries and Wild bunch world.

In Calavera we get to see more of Kit and Luna's interaction and the way little things start to fall into place , there's also a lot of growing up for both characters and the action lets not forget this author can write an action scene that will keep you eating your nails

Nix is still his alpha male self, but in Calavera we get to see more of his soft side, the way he loves his pequeña Luna and the way he would sacrifice everything so they can be together again.

Luna, well besides being totally kick ass she's just amazing. Luna is definitely one of my favorite heroines ever written by London Miller. She's this tough female that even the way she has suffered she still fights for what she wants, the way she doesn't submit to anyone but to Nix talks a lot about all the trust and love between this two and how far they've come in their relationship

It wouldn't be a LM book if we didn't get a healthy dose of steamy scenes and since not everything in life are hearts and flowers we also get some scenes that quite honestly will make you cry, because that's the magic of Ms. Miller's books she can make you feel like all her characters are some sort of friends so when they suffer you just have to cry like a little baby.

When it comes to London Miller I assure you're in for one hell of a ride, amazing writing style and unforgettable characters. CALAVERA is one of the best books this series so far and honestly I can wait for what's to come. If you love Mafia Romance and action packed books you'll love this one!

BHIThis picks up where
ended, which was the first in the series that didn't complete in one book. Luna and Kit are still working out their relationship kinks; while working the current assignment which confronts her past. Kit and his brother Uilleam flip the script by combining forces to dismantle the mysterious entity targeting their business, and personal interests.

The Good:
1. So many questions about everyone's pasts are finally answered, including the employees in both organizations.

2. Kit is in danger of taking my #2 book boyfriend spot (#1 is forever Barrons
). He might be controlling to the point of invasiveness, but love that he doesn't try to clip her wings in the things that really matter.

3. Luna might be Kit's submissive, but she is boss in every way that matters.

4. Uilleam makes being a sociopath look adorable...how is that possible?

The Bad:
1. Triggers are everywhere, so beware.

Final Thoughts:
This was a great way to wrap up everything began in the previous book, while laying the groundwork for intensity to come. I cannot wait for The Kingmakers story to finally come out.

I have been a huge fan of this series. Calavera and Nix have been almost a turning point as the secrets and revelations have been insane. I FLOVE this series but honestly nothing takes the cake like Nix and Calavera's books. Kit and Luna were romantic and intense and good Lord was Kit feral af when he needed to be. I seriously don't think I could love this book anymore!

I love that this author is so meticulous with the details and that every breadcrumb and flashback is so on point. I loved Kit and Luna's love but also how much Kit fought back to redeem himself in Luna's eyes. The more we learn about people (The Kingmaker, Skorpion, Syn, Winter and The Wild Bunch) the more I desperately die for their stories! Bravo! 5 stars! ~Ratula

“We all make our own choices, but our choices have consequences.” Luna ‘Calavera’ Santiago

What a story guys. Wow.
To be honest I thought that I could get bored with so many books in this serie. But the truth is that I feel like a drug addict waiting for my next dose.

This book was truly a rollercoaster of emotions which I still don't know if I feel prepared or if I'm going to change or add something here but I needed to share my thoughts with the world.

Definitely the story of Nix & Calavera is one that can easily become my favorite of the author (I'm sorry Lauren & Mish, Nix have a "Je ne sais quoi" that drives me crazy). The development of the characters is impressive and you just can't stop... but at the same time you want to read as slow as possible so the details don't escape from you.

Because this world, (not wait) this universe that London created in her head and share with us is based on every detail that she releases us to end with our misery.

Here we are looking a story where you can see some Mercenaries working together and not only with each other but with The Wild Bunch (* whisper * and the Wild Bunch will have their series - No matter what, London you keep writing what you like I got you back, girl).

We see life and we see death.
Happiness and Sadness
Hate and love.
Friendship and betrayal.
Lies and truths.

I feel like this book easily for me becomes the Yin & Yang of the whole series. I love the fact that both characters are so closely intertwined with each other. As despite living in a shitty world, in the end they are together. I love the fact that Luna is strong and not a damsel in distress.

New characters appear, more questions, more hypotheses, more lies, so many things behind so many characters. Much to hide. Decisions with consequences that must be faced.

This series is one of those that you stay with hangover for a few days... One that you can't stop thinking about... One of which you anxiously wait for the next book to know more and yet you know that the next book will not be enough.

Sorry for my rambling ... I recommend it a thousand times!

Pawns were often overlooked with so many of them being on the board. They were the sacrifice in a bid to get at a bigger mark, but sometimes, the pawn that could win the game.

Qué historia chicos. Wow.

Vemos vida y vemos muerte.
Felicidad y tristeza.
odio y amor.
amistad y traición.
mentiras y verdades.

“Will do, kitten.”
“Kitten?”
“Kit has to be short for something,” Luna remarked with a laugh. He did his best to hide his own amusement.
“Call me that again, and I’ll put you over my knee.”
“Is that a promise?”
“Is that permission?”
A thrill shot down Luna’s spine at his question and the implications behind it. “We’ll see how long you manage to stay away, kitten.”

It really takes a woman with a set of balls to move things along. This was a good conclusion to their story but pretty light and wished i got more background info of Nix and Kingmaker and why is K so into calavera. Also want to know more about Z. I am more more intrigued with the secondary characters popping up. Can I get more Kingman and Belladonna?!?!?

5 Kitten Stars!

After finishing Nix I couldn't wait for Calavera to come. I was invested in Luna and Kit to the point of driving my family nearly insane. ( Everyone has their vices, I claim Booksanity- not bad compared to others vices out there)

In Nix we got to delve into how it all began: the players, the plots, the end game etc; because with all Of London's book we have schemes, plots, machinations galore. It's not simply a "romance" It's an EXPERIENCE- it's like the rides at the theme park. You get the ups and downs, the scary moment where the roller coaster is twisting and your heart nearly skips a beat. the quick turns that make you giggle and ending climatic dip where you get that exhilarating high. And once you get to the end you want to start it all over again. It's like that but with hot, cunning men mixed in and SEX. Lot's and lots of sexy sexy times.

Luna and Kit are semi-made up, Some issues are cleared up but plots are still in the works. It's all about out maneuvering the bad guys and in some cases I was kinda scared that the bad guys would win. I say bad guys loosely because come on our good guys are pretty bad too but they make bad looks so good. I'm seriously all for the anti-heroes. I fell for the come to the "dark side we have cookies" mantra and cuddled up with a maitai and totally got comfortable.

Seeing what Kit does behind the scenes to give Luna her space was so cute, Some could deem it psychotic but I think it's romantic and sweet. Good thing Luna's of the same frame of mind. There was alot of protectiveness, jealousy and sarcastic bantering between the 2 and the romance was intense, they didn't have to always be together to feel it. I'm just sorry this book ended. :(

There were a lot of things that totally caught me unawares, I wish some things didn't turn out the way it did but in the lives of mercenaries there are always casualties. We got another peak into Uilleam and the mysterious Belladonna and boy can I just say if this turns out the way I think it'll turn out it's going to be a very long and very impacting game of chess Uilleam is playing.

I hope the Jackal gets his own book because dammit his quiet stillness just screams for a heroine to shake up his control a little. Not to mention the whole "He is a weapon in itself" nonsense. That's freakin hot!

Loved the story, Calavera gave so much more insight to the Runehart brothers' story. I live for Belladonna!

This book had all the makings for a Hollywood blockbuster.
-Kick ass heroine
-Man who saves her...
-Tragic deaths
-Enough master plans the good guys could be villains...

I felt Calavera was lacking something and I honestly cannot put my finger on what it was but I do know I was a bit disappointed. Kit, the first part of this two-fer, was excellent as you can see the romance between he and Luna, the fight and spirit of a young woman. Luna, who was cheated and dealt the shittiest of hands, came back swinging. Yet, it seemed that Luna was being saved by every man possible left and right. Kit? Uilleam? Skorpion? She is no Lauren Volkov and yet she was treated as such which made her seem ridiculously weak. This felt like a major hindrance in the story that just didn't make sense as we've all read how bad ass she is. And to go against those who wronged her, only 2 chapters?!

3.5 stars.

Slow start fast ending

I have to admit I had trouble getting into the story. Took a few to remember the last book and all its ins and outs. Then the story took off. Lots of action lots of evil people and lots of vengeance. It also gave a promise of more action and vengeance to come.

As always Ms. Miller wraps you up in her world and won't let go. Good to hear from the rest of the Den. My heart goes out to Fang. Can't wait for more.

I liked this book better than the previous one, so it gets 4.5 stars. there were some typos but less than in book 3. the only real annoying thing was the french name of skorpions daughter soleil, which means "sun". first it was correctly written but later in the book continuously wrong. every time the wrong written soliel popped up it disturbed the reading flow. I hope that it will be written correctly in his book, which is supposed to be next.

Loved it!

Calavera kept my heart racing, with my mind constantly in a state of alert. There were times when the drama would heighten and then as it eased I would think "Why has the story peaked so early?" Then the suspense would build again, becoming evident there would be many more situations to encounter before this book ended.

“It’s a bit of a story, really,” Luna said with a shrug of his shoulder.
Kit smirked. “It always is with you.”

Initially, I took a moment to gather my bearings. Calavera is the sixth book in the series, and each book opens up another plethora of information. In a perfect world, I would have taken copious notes, or at the very least read the series again before I embarked on part two of Kit and Luna's story. It is the kind of series that takes your mind to a heightened state where you don't want to miss any of the plot's intricacies.

The Den of Mercenaries series has been building towards the mystery surrounding the man the mercenaries take their assignments from, The Kingmaker. A lot more time is spent with him in this book while providing an insight into what made him tick. He refuses to accept defeat. Constantly anticipating, planning and strategically playing others, while waiting patiently to orchestrate his final move. A game is only interesting when it is challenging, and the challenges the Kingmaker experiences in this book equate to suspense. With each of the scenes guaranteed to raise your heart rate!

Adding to the team of skilled assassins, The Den find themselves working with Kit's men known as The Wild Bunch. The Wild Bunch are aptly named, providing their unique skills to Kit out of loyalty. It's interesting to see the similarities in the structure of both teams, while their unique strategies executing assignments set them apart. The camaraderie they share with their partners is an aspect I never tire of reading. Their cameo appearances created a level of familiarity as the drama unfolded.

Rarely throughout the story do we hear Luna referred to as Calavera. Each of the main characters is known by dual names, while only revealing their given names to a trusted few. This duplicity added to the complexity of the mystery rather than detract from the storytelling. The dual names are as much of a facet of the character as they are an identifier to what they represent. An important lesson I am anticipating will play as the series continues.

"Weapons," the big, bald one to her left demanded, his finger on the trigger of his gun. Luna smiled, even as she palmed her knife. "I am the weapon."...

Luna is a woman who radiates confidence, ability and determination. Interestingly, it was her vulnerability, and how she connected with those she cared about, that constantly garnered my appreciation. Some people offer to give you the moon. Then there is Kit who has claimed Luna and will destroy anyone who dares to harm the centre of his universe.

The Den of Mercenaries is one of my favourite series. Luna and Kit's obvious love for each other combined with suspense and drama surrounding them held me captive from start to finish. I can't wait to read the next book in this series, Skorpion.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Having read The Wild Bunch books before this, I knew a certain traumatic event that would occur towards the end of the book. That is the only reason I didn't finish this whilst ugly crying on a MASSIVE scale.

This book will only 'work' if you've read at least the previous book, Nix. It pretty much picks up from where that book ended and has so many different plot threads woven together I can't begin to pick them apart! I really enjoyed the book, perhaps if you're a better puzzle solver than I am you have joined more of the dot's together. I'm still wondering where the background plot will eventually take us but am confident, from the quality of writing so far, that the journey will be a very enjoyable and magnificent one.

We see much more of the present day Nix/Kit and Calavera/Luna and get to experience their deep connection to each other. We also get to see the more D/s aspect of their sexual relationship (perhaps Top/bottom would be a better description but it's not so much BDSM as just Kit being dominant with a touch of kink).

There is a lot of dangling Elias and Belladonna in front of us, then whipping them away before we can learn enough about them (in a good way). Lots of suspense and intrigue, plenty of action, a good dollop of bedroom (and against the wall etc) action and some intricate game playing all work to make one heck of an amazing read.

I loved learning more about Skorpion and The Wild Bunch, both of whom make several appearances in this book. We also see more of the Jackal - hmm, theories, theories on whom he could be. There area few 'lose' plot ends but it's easy to see that these will be carried into the next book.

FINALLY.
Calavera gives Luna the closure she's needed.
Nix finally gets his girl back.

We get better insight into the Kingmaker and other characters. The fascination is real.

This book is really long and packs a lot of information in it.
I couldn't put it down. This web of plot gets bigger and more complicated with every page.

The saga continues!

Calavera (Den of Mercenaries #4) by London Miller
4.5 stars!!!

“…to topple an empire…you don’t start with the queen – you start with her pawns.”

London Miller has held me captive for the past one and a half days, four books read and now I am itching to read the next one…only to find out that it isn’t released yet!!! Hot damn!! Skorpion is up next and I cannot wait for his book and to find out who is behind everything that has happened so far. We think we know, but do we?

“Ghosts don’t stay hidden forever – I’ll always find them. And you tell her, or whoever it is you work for that the second I become available, I will make it my mission to flush her out.”

Calavera is the continuance of Kit and Luna’s story but rather than concentrate solely on them as a couple this is a more action packed, plot driven book that centres around the storyline that has been continual since book one and there were some major, major scenes that have left me stunned.

“…showed me what it meant to truly love someone without question…but she also showed me that love makes you weak.”

London Miller certainly bought her A Game with this one. Suspense and intrigue throughout, action packed to the gills and goes somewhat to answering a lot of questions while simultaneously generating a whole lot more. Seriously, this series has been addictive from the very beginning and normally spending this length of time in one world gets incredibly boring, but nothing could be further from the truth.

“Sometimes, you just need a bit of perspective.”

Luna just goes from strength to strength and her total kickassness oozed from every page as she is made to confront a lot of demons as well as try to repair her marriage to Kit. Kit shows his more romantic side in this book as he goes all out to win back the affections (that he never truly lost) of Luna and just the little things mean so, so much.

“I’d give you anything you asked for, but never that.”

Uilleam is really growing on me and I don’t know whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. Yes, our good guys are bad, but they are positively angels compared to the people they are fighting against and you cannot help but have their backs as London Miller makes us the reader navigate through some incredibly dangerous scenarios.

“Protect her – even if you have to protect her from herself.”

Palpitations aplenty, edge of your seat moments and nail biting is an Olympic sport in this book and mine are bit to the quick. I love this authors writing style and connected with it on the first book I read of hers, hence coming back from more. London Miller certainly nails the suspense and intrigue but her character connection is on point and this band of mercenaries have certainly burrowed their way into my heart. It is this connection that led to quite a few tears in this book as London Miller plucks at so many heart strings and most probably not in the way you are thinking.

“Just know that those I deemed responsible will be held accountable.”

Calavera held many surprises, Calavera destroyed my heart, but Calavera has also left me wanting vengeance, while some has already been dished there is still a lot to be dealt and I for one want a front row seat. Bring on Skorpion!!

“Did you miss me?”

"I cherish you." No Kit, I cherish you! I think, London, that I have a new favorite couple and well...you guessed it, Kit and Luna.
Gawd!!! That man can pour on the charm! This was everything I needed after Nix. He fixed it...damn straight!
The action was constant and the mysteries surrounding some other important characters have come to light and oh man is it going to be marvelous once it all comes together.
And, how about the tender moments between Kit and Luna. Not only did they have their steamy scenes, but the humor in the Doctor's office...golden. Can we have little assassin/mercenary babies from them anytime soon? But I do have to say that the book spotlight did go to Fang...poor Fang. Awe, he needs a HEA. Well the entire Wild Bunch does! I like them!
Anyways, wonderful job and the plot kept you wanting more. It was definitely a page turner for me and be prepared to read late into the night. Bring on more from the Den!

Perfection.

This was a wonderful conclusion to Luna and Kit's story. I admit I'm not ready to say goodbye to them though. Their story is up there with Mishca and Lauren; I can just continue reading about them forever, I think.
In Nix, and Calavera we're introduced to more characters in the Mercenary world - now I look forward to reading their own stories of redemption, finding peace, love, and adventure.
You have an incredible gift, and you obviously value the loyal readers you've obtained. The attention to detail in the plots, how they intertwine, how we have to pull on our memory strings to solve song with the characters is masterful!! I'm confident in your ability to deliver each time. Now... to get back to waiting on the next book. Until next time! FV

This book was amazing.
I loved how like in the previous book Nix it started with the present and went back in time so we could see how everything happened that led them to where they were now.
I really enjoyed seeing how everything come together and how their plans all worked out, except for one thing which had me crying a lot!
And I loved seeing more of Fang. I really liked him in the previous book, so it was good to find out more about his character.
And I'm so excited for Skorpions book next!

I read this book in the "Den of Mercenaries: Volume One" (the first 4 books of the series). I found a new favorite author. Favorite doesn't really do it justice, one of the top authors so far. When I started these book I wasn't sure what to expect and what I found was a wonderful adventure. The plot is like a roller coaster with twist and turn and you never know when you are going up or coming down. The characters were all described so well and had such depth I never felt like anything was missing. Wow, just wow!

I just got introduced to London Miller and she ranks right up there with another series writer, J.D. Robb. Quite clever in her storytelling, she makes you want to stay to the very end. Unfortunately, there are only 24 hours in the day, so ... Calavera is an off-shoot of the Kingmaker saga and it fills in the blanks. This story is good as a standalone, but the reading of the Kingmaker saga series completes it if read first. Every page kept me enthralled.
