Homer Hailey (August 12, 1903 – November 9, 2000), born in 1903 outside of Marshall in Harrison County, East Texas, was a preacher among the churches of Christ in the twentieth century, a Bible professor at Abilene Christian College (now University) for thirteen years between 1934 and 1951, vice president and head of the Bible department for 22 years at Florida College (formerly Florida Christian College) in Temple Terrace, FL, and the author of at least fifteen theological books, including Commentaries on the Minor Prophets, Isaiah, Job, Daniel, and Revelation. He was well known for his general Biblical knowledge, especially of the Old Testament. After retiring to Tucson, AZ, in the spring of 1973, he died in 2000 at the age of 97 in Tucson.
Although I had heard of his name practically all my life, I first met brother Hailey in 1971 when I was a teenager and he came to my home congregation in Hillsboro, OH, to speak in a weekend meeting on the book of Revelation. I enrolled at Florida College in the fall of 1972. Hailey was on a leave of absence that semester but returned for the spring, 1973, semester. I did not have any classes with him but would see him on campus and in the Temple Terrace community. That was his final semester at the college prior to his retirement. A Festschrift is a German word describing a collection of essays usually written by former students or colleagues, often presented on the occasion of a scholar’s retirement. This Festschrift was compiled by Edward Fudge in 1973 to commemorate the retirement of Homer Hailey. All the essays center on the theme of the resurrection of Christ. I have known or at least met all the writers: Gordon Wilson, L. A. Mott Jr., Ferrell Jenkins, Edward Fudge, Harold Tabor, Maurice Barnett, and Phil Roberts (now deceased). Through the years, I have found material from the book quite useful in preaching on the resurrection of Christ. I do not believe that it is currently available in print.
