On our way to Italy to find my dad, Don Enzo Spia, Lisa, Jade and I hit a bump in the road, namely in the form of one (almost dead) mobster.
A dead mobster is one thing, but an almost dead mobster can only lead to disruption and pandemonium in the recovering Spia clan.
With our Italian trip on hold, along with the news that my distant dad has some old-fashioned plans for me, and with the added surprise of a real dead body the family Spia goes into self-preservation mode . . . they plan a wedding.
Having no choice but to snag the killer, Lisa, Jade and I take it upon ourselves to throw some hot oil into the already scorching hot frying pan. Needless to say, sparks fly, tempers rise, arguments ensue and what should be a happy time for the family Spia turns into a sleuthing detail that can only lead to . . . a wedding.
Come join me on my quest to stay sober while I try my best to avoid murder and mayhem on the Spia Family Orchard.
*No actual mobsters were harmed during the writing of this book.
USA Today bestselling author, Mary Leo, writes small-town, swoon-worthy, sexy romance with enough humor to give you a giggle or two. She loves Italian food, a bubbly flute of Prosecco, meeting her fabulous readers, the company of other writers, and a cup of hot tea every morning. She's a city girl who adores a small town. When she's not writing, she's reading or binging on a great comedy series.
Mia is a recovering alcoholic and her entire family are recovering too. They are former Mobsters trying to stay legal and even have a Mobsters Anonymous support group for when the desire to off someone becomes too strong. Mia and friends are planning a trip to Italy to locate her father but she thinks she has seen him in her home town. The trip is cancelled completely when they find a body in the road. The man has been shot but not killed and thus the main mystery begins. The Spia family has an olive oil industry and the book contains numerous uses for olive oil and information on olives. There are several recipes throughout the book and constant talk of the joy of Italians' love of olives and other foods. A plate of Antipasto close as you read would be helpful. The book was funny but very laid back as far as solving the mysteries goes. The ending was unexpected but not very exciting. A good read but not as suspenseful as I usually prefer.
Grab a plate of cheese, a loaf of Italian bread, olives, a bottle of extra virgin olive oil before starting to read to avoid getting hungry as reading. Located in Sonoma Valley in California, the Spia Family which is an Italian family operation consisting of ex-mobsters, ex-cons and reformed killers runs an olive growing, picking, pressing and selling of olive oil plus its various products. Mia Spia is a recovering alcoholic who has just discovered that her father has arranged a marriage for her with the mobster she found laying in the road shot. This man is now under her care. But this man is also engaged to her father’s bodyguard, Angelina. When Angelina turns up dead, Mia, her best friend (Lisa) plus Jade (her new half sister) set out to find the killer. I felt the story was well plotted with several sub plots, drama, suspense with plenty of twists and turns. There are many humorous moments plus after each chapter a recipe is included. Get ready for Orange Olive Oil Muffins, Insalata Caprese for Two, Deviled Eggs: Italian Style, Lasagna, Spia Pasta Sauce plus olives 🫒, olives 🫒 and more olives 🫒.
Anther great read. A wonderful plot of delusion, murder and mafia. Loved the way the characters are growing and the fact that she can see that neither of the two men are right for her. One because he has too many links to the mafia, especially her father, and the other because he would be a constant temptation to a recovering alcoholic, being a vineyard owner. However I must admit that in this one is did guess the culprit quite early on. She, her BFF and her new half sister are going to track her elusive father down by trailing behind his hitman. A shortcut however proves to be a bad choice as they come across the hitman lying in the road. Shot! After they get him to her mother's house she finds out that a marriage has been arranged between her and the injured man. A date has been picked and all the arrangements made. Add in his Nonna, his 'fiance', several attempts to kill her, murder of the 'fiance' for a terrific read. Will she marry him? Will the vineyard owner propose? What next?
I had to go buy this second book after I finished reading the first one. As I had hoped, there were laughs galore throughout the book - possibly even more than in the first book! The characters that we met in the first book are developed further, and new characters are introduced. Another dead body turns up (and is subsequently disappeared) as shenanigans in this recovering-mobster family ramp up. I am eagerly awaiting book 3 with this hilarious family.
It took awhile to keep all of the characters straight in both books because there are so many. It is an odd but interesting storyline with some funny scenes. I enjoyed it and have pre ordered #3.
