Welcome to historic Lea Bay, home of maritime lore and the region’s most popular pirate festival. It was also the landing site of the infamous Lords of the Deep, ruthless pirates who once pillaged the area and said to have hidden a chest full of cursed treasure.

But this year’s pirate festival will be different.

This year, the Lords of the Deep are coming home.

Recovering from the death of her husband, Daphne Jordan is thrust into a series of bizarre events leading up to the big celebration. Lea Bay locals have been reporting strange incidents. Green mist. Seismic activity. Sinister sightings in the harbor, things with scales and long, sharp teeth. Monsters. Joined by her brother-in-law and a local police officer, Daphne must solve the mystery before whatever is swimming beneath the shore surfaces for all eternity. Before the Lords of the Deep resurrect their long-dormant leader upon the Bay—and the world.

The Fog meets Pirates of the Caribbean. Will Jake survive the attack of some ghostly pirates (The Lords of the Deep) on the picturesque town of Leabay? What about the sea monsters. Where do they come from all of a sudden? What about Jake's uncle Eric? And why is the treasure box everybody is looking to possess so important? A very wild ride of pirates, treasure, greed, resurrection and a mysterious goddess on the rise. Oh, and same nasty sea snakes of course. If you want to sail out for some horror adventure this definitely is the right book for it. Highly recommended. Pirate days ain't over yet!

If you follow my reviews, you'll know that the "Creature Feature" is not my favorite horror sub genre. I find that most stories involving a villainous creature of some sort rely pretty heavily on readers being able to suspend disbelief. They also tend to lean heavy on the gore and mayhem, with character development being too thin for my liking.
LORDS OF THE DEEP is *not* your average Creature Feature.
I'm excited to report that the collaborative efforts of Patrick Lacey and Tim Meyer have been put to excellent use in this fast paced, compelling tale of Lea Bay and its inhabitants.
Chapter One is a solid hook; I just had to keep turning the pages after that enticing lead. And the hooks just keep coming! Every chapter ends on a mysterious note that made me curious and eager for more. One of the most impressive aspects to this story is the descriptive language. I was constantly blown away at the vivid word pictures Meyer and Lacey were able to conjure up in my mind.
I was immersed in Lea Bay's seaside charm on the surface but with a seedy underbelly and dark history. All the characters that were introduced were interesting and three dimensional--nobody seemed like stand-in props to be fed to the beasts later. Most importantly, I was treated to some amazing descriptions of all the sinister activity going on--there is SO MUCH going on! Fresh horror is emerging every twenty pages or so--sea serpents, ghost pirates, green mist...the threats and the body count keep leveling up at a frenetic pace.
Normally, my cautionary advice to potential readers would be that there's not enough emotional investment here to care about what happens to the characters and to enter this one with no expectations other than to just have fun and be entertained by the carnage--LORDS OF THE DEEP turned the tables on me in more ways than one!
I did care about the characters, actually, which was a nice surprise. I loved the character arc of Daphne Johnson and I was into her the whole time.
There's also some very cool/original story developments that caught me off guard and I really enjoyed that too! Lots of new territory covered here in this story-it's not your average blood soaked gore-fest (although there's plenty of THAT as well)
My only real complaint is that somewhere about 50 pages in, I started losing interest. The plot got a little bit draggy/repetitive. But then it picked back up again around the 100 page mark, so I’m glad I didn’t set it down but I did have to push on through some of the chapters.
This was a super fast, entertaining read that didn't just scratch the surface of the reader's experience but really went a few layers deeper making LORDS OF THE DEEP a Creature Feature with teeth, laughs and heart. Throughly enjoyed it.

Plundering Pirate Ghost Action!

Backstory:

Setting: Lea Bay

The town of Lea Bay is wrapped up tight with past transgressions when pirates use to rule the town and they took advantage of whatever came across their path.

Though now in the present the ghosts of the pirates are making their presence known to the townsfolk as they are wanting something that belongs to them and the pirates brought along a "sea pet" to help them secure what they are looking for which is going to turn the town upside down. No matter who gets killed in the process the ghost pirates are going to do whatever it takes upon blood and death to find it!

That is about all I can give on a backstory without giving away spoilers, so you if you want to know more then you will need to read the book!

Thoughts:

This is a great creature feature story meshed within ghost pirates, a ghost ship, and a treasure chest. There are quite a few characters to keep track of as well which is why I didn't add them into my "backstory" description as the whole town is involved in the story.

There was action right out of the gate with this book and a slow buildup of things happening with the ghost pirates, but then after the half way point the book picks up speed and then all hell breaks loose with more sea serpent action along with pirate action as well.

I found myself flying through the pages as there was so much action on all fronts that I wanted to see what would happen next! This book kind of reminded me of the horror movie "The Fog" as it seems when the fog rolls into the town of Lea Bay is when the ghost pirates appear. Definitely was a fun filled adventure with a haunting and creature feature action! Giving this book four "Scary Sea Serpent" stars!

LORDS OF THE DEEP, by authors Tim Meyer and Patrick Lacey, is a book that hit several sub-genres of horror, and made each stand out successfully. Looking at the cover, my initial thought was a "creature-feature". It was, yet it was also so much more.

"EYES IN THE MURK."

In the small town of Lea Bay, there is a legend that Pirates once landed in the town, pillaging, raping, and spreading unspeakable carnage. Unlike other legends though, this one has a more "sinister" element to it.

These pirates had allegedly made a pact with a devil, of sorts--one that ruled the ocean and an army of sea monsters . . .

". . . Pirates don't cause seismic activity."

The action starts immediately with Donny Jordon, one of a crew of thieves who helped to steal an unopened pirate chest, for an "unknown buyer". Once there, we move on in various directions and learn about the key players here. The story of Donny's wife and son, Daphne and Jake, really captured my attention, giving us a family with obvious issues, yet at its core, one that was very close.

". . . This was reality. This was her life now."

Interspersed among the modern day happenings, the authors dish out portions of the town's fabled history. I enjoyed the way they weaved around the current issues, and injected parts of the events that happened to this town in the past, when the pirates actually lived in the small port.

"Sometimes, old wounds continued to hurt . . . "

Getting a glimpse at the personalities of the pirates was another aspect that I enjoyed. The leader, the relationships, their lives before landing in Lea Bay--all of these dynamics made it feel as if I were getting two stories in one.

". . . fear does that. Makes you think ridiculous things . . . "

For the most part--with the exception of a "lull" in the current timeline about a quarter of the way in--the story moved along steadily. There were plenty of unexpected twists to keep things from getting stagnant, and a lot of character development throughout.

". . . Everything he thought he knew about the rational world had come undone in the time it had taken to eat a stale egg roll . . . "

Overall, this was a fun "summer" read. I could picture the water lapping at the docks, walks along the beach, and other, more monstrous things . . . There was a point early on where I felt things were a bit repetitive, but once past that, the pacing picked up appreciatively. The authors took a legend that could have been commonplace, and made it into something much more complex and intricate, with parts branching out into areas I never would have expected.

"You can't stop what's been beneath you all along."

Recommended!

DNF at 34%. I really did try hard here. The premise sounded like a blast. And I love both the authors. And it takes place in my lifelong state of New Jersey. All the makings for a good reading experience. However, after the few chapters, I became completely overwhelmed with the huge amount of characters brought in all at once. And it jumps all over the place, leaving you as the reader unsure if any of these people are just faceless victims to perpetuate the threat and stakes, characters that you really need to pay attention to for the long haul, or something in between. So as I was trying to navigate all that noise, I was missing some of the fun lore and interesting plot points, ie sea serpents and zombie pirates. If the story stuck to Donny, Daphne, Jake, Eric, and maybe a few select others, it would have eliminated a great deal of unnecessary filler and made the pacing and overall flow much smoother. Probably my least favorite book from both authors, who are otherwise very talented and usually have much better showings.

"The Lords are real and they've come back."

2.5⭐

Creature features are not usually something I go for, but I love both of these authors, so I wanted to give this one a shot. There's nothing wrong with the book, but I just really wasn't the right reader for it. I didn't connect to the story at all, and had a hard time staying invested in pirate ghosts and sea serpents. I did really enjoy the autopsy scene, but I struggled with the rest.

John Carpenters "The Fog" meets "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" with a hint of Tim Powers "On Stranger Tides". What a fun read this was. Pirate ghosts, cursed treasure, and sea monsters. You couldn't ask for more.

This book stars out with a bang, and doesn't let up.

The Good: Really good story about ghost pirates and sea monsters and it happens to take place in one of my favorite places, Jersey Shore,(Go head and laugh)

The Bad: The final climax between the protagonist and antagonists seemed rushed and thus weak. I mean you blink and it's over.

The Ugly: The secondary protagonist annoyed the fuck out of me. I mean the main protagonist is going through a personal Hell and this dude is pining for her and crying :"Whaa whaa whaa, it should've been me". Give me a freakin break. I couldn't wait till something bad happened to him

The Lords of the Deep is a fun horror novel that combines the talents of Tim Meyer and Patrick Lacey perfectly. I have read several books by each author previously and they have always been excellent reads. In this novel the authors have written a seamless book and it is never evident who wrote which section. This is a novel with a quick pace and plenty of action and gore. I enjoyed the characters and I feel they were well developed. However this novel is all about the action and the monsters. This novel has ghost pirates as well as various water monsters and it was so much fun to read. I highly recommended this enjoyable tale.

Arrrrrr....ye scurvy wench. Where be me treasure map?
You left it in your pantaloons and I put them in the wash. I now know why they call you Captain Skidmark.

Either the story is stretched out to meet publishers requirements, or the author put in a lot of tedious bits in between action scenes, but the first 75% of the story just seemed to drag on. I nearly DNF many times. Once you're into that last 25%, the action kept me going - just. It could have been the martinis - the more I had, the better the story seemed to get.

Look, if you like pirates and ghosts and sea snakes, it's probably 3.5 stars. For me, it was just too long. 2 1/2 landlubber stars. I liked Tim's Primal Terra better than this...or maybe I'm just "in a mood". Now where's that martini?

This is a good one folks! I really enjoyed reading it and recommend you do too. It begins with a stolen treasure chest in transit to the local Historical Society. Legend told of this treasure and the Lords ability to summon “eldritch beasts” from the oceans undiscovered depths.

The Lords of the Deep is the title of a scrapbook found in the attic of a home in Lea Bay which began as a hobby that became an obsession. This book has it all, pirates, the walking dead, 400 yr old ship and creatures. These authors made these characters come alive. I could just visualize the rolling sea, the black clouds, the tentacles reaching for the town folk, streets covered in blood! I call this a good, ole fashioned creature feature!

This book was quite the fun read blending some pirate legends, nautical beasty horror, and suspense mystery together. I am a huge fan of both authors as independent writers and I knew I just had to read a collaboration between them. I am not sure the details on the actual collab but I do know the writing seemed seamless and I could not tell where one author stopped and the other picked up the pen. The characters were quite likable and I found myself really feeling a few of them and wanting them to succeed.

One of the better adventure themed horror tales I've read. Meyer and Lacey rely on good old fashioned story telling here without the need or use of excessive gore and profanity. Not that I mind those two things.

This is an extremely well written and fresh entry into this genre, with characters that I cared and rooted for. It was a fun read and I look forward to seeking out other works by these authors.

I really enjoyed the book, I was in the mood for a little horror with some vengeful ghost pirates and a treasure that might be cursed and should be avoided. Maybe not the best book to read before bed but I still managed to read way passed my bedtime. I liked the characters and the storyline and it was just very entertaining and lets not forget the green fog.

Fun for a horror story!!

First, why Kim 5 stars? Well, because I enjoyed every single word, the tension was amazing and who doesn’t like ghosts, pirates and more monsters. Sure high body count and blood galore but the story is linear, the relationships are spot on and wow then these guys can paint a mind picture! Humor? Yes! Actually In just the right places. A mothers love to save her child in the most bizarre situation ever! Walking dead, plot twists! ( hey not fair!) will make you enjoy a good, scary and entertaining read for a quiet day! Read and enjoy!!

I’ll begin by saying that I really enjoy the work of both Meyers and Lacey. Their books LIMBS and WHERE STARS WON’T SHINE (respectively) were great reads for me this year.

I liked this book, it has an interesting premise and I tend to enjoy creature stories. There are some great descriptions and, as my friend Emily notes in her review, there’s an autopsy scene that was just everything in gore and detail I needed. There’s also a decent twist I really liked.

For the most part I found sections a little repetitive and drawn out. This pulled me out of the story a bit and I found myself impatiently waiting to get to the next scene.

Will I read another book by these authors, both together and separately? Absolutely.

It’s still summer, so it’s time to get into a creature feature!
Set at an ocean side town, bodies are found mutilated to the point it doesn’t look like it was done by a human and it involves everyone in the town. This book was insane! Even though this does feature a giant sea serpent, there’s plenty of stuff going on such as another kaiju and dead pirate cultists, plus a police procedural!
I also love how the characters are believable in the trauma and larger than life stuff that’s going on. I also love how seamless the writing was. Even though it’s by two people, there’s a clear voice that flows smoothly and not divided. It’s a great summer horror read if you love the Fog and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Went into this expecting a creature feature and while there is a fair amount of people being eaten by giant sea beasts, which is always a winner, there is a lot more going on here. Ghost Pirates, strange green mists, possession and human evil all feature here.

It doesn't hang about and gets straight to the introduction of the serpent, but the 1st unexpected turn happens pretty quickly after that and then they don't stop. By the midway point I really didn't know which of the characters were on Daphne's side. The ending feels a little rushed, but it did fit with the mythology scattered through the story.

A fun read by two excellent authors

Admittedly I haven't delved deep into the realm of aquatic horror despite the fact that I find it fascinating. I hoped to begin to remedy that with Lords of the Deep by two authors I've read and enjoyed solo works by - Tim Meyer and Patrick Lacey. I wasn't sure what to expect from this one, thinking it might just be 200 pages of sea creature carnage. Make no mistake, I would've been okay with that, but the reader is treated to a lot more. The authors create a living, breathing seaside town to house the story. Lea Bay with it's troubled past and complex backstory is just as much a character as Daphne, Jake, or any of the other human cohorts.

Meyer and Lacey do deliver, and pretty early on, with the giant sea creatures, though the focus is more on pirates, ghosts, and hidden treasures. Combine that with the town, and you've got a little bit of the type of urban legend flavor that one hopes to find in a small coastal town. A lot of the book is considerably more subtle than I expected, but Lacey and Meyer do allow for things to come absolutely unhinged at a certain point in the story. If that's why you bought a ticket, you won't leave the theater disappointed.

I love some big sea serpents and krakens, I love some pirate lore, I love well-developed small town horror, and Lords of the Deep brings together two phenomenal indie horror authors to deliver the goods.

Christian Alert ! "I abandoned this book at 50%. This author cant make it thru a whole page without cursing God or using the "F" word. It is so unnecessary. He has some good plot ideas, but doesn't have the wordcrafting skills to pull it off.
All the negatives got tedious so I quit."

"All my life, I've thought I knew the people around me, but everyone has another side, don't they? Everyone wears a mask." Daphne.

Sea Serpents and pirates and treasure... oh my!
I enjoyed reading Lords of the Deep. This book had blood and gore aplenty, but it also had heart - and not just those ripped from the chests of the unlucky. Daphne is the quintessential mother bear, and Jake is her cute but naive cub. Even though there was an subplot involving romance, that never took over the story in any way - which was good, as this was not a romance.
There were a couple plot lines that I felt could have been taken further to enhance the story - namely that the pirate that possessed Donny had betrayed the Lords before. I thought that either he could have pulled from Donny's love of his family to help defeat the Lords again, or that he could have tried harder to make up for the betrayal and been of more consequence in that way. I also felt that the goddess was defeated way too easily - a being of that much power maybe should have had more to do with the final scenes.
In reality, I only give this book 3.5 stars, but there are no half stars in the rating system.
I did like this book, don't misunderstand me. I merely think that it could have been more. However, it was an engrossing tale that kept me turning pages to find out what would happen next.
