Rate this book
Sometimes a single flame can ignite a love that lasts a lifetime.

Milo Phillips knows the meaning of pain. Suffering through the most intense physical agony of his life, he’s confined to a hospital bed to bear it alone. More than once, he wishes he’d died in the explosion that melted and mangled his skin. Darkness consumes him, snuffing all the joy in his life and leaving an empty hole in its place.
But one day, a flicker of light sneaks into his hospital room, driving away some of the hopelessness. For the first time in months, pain isn’t all he feels.

The flicker’s name is Sara Foster, his new nurse. Milo just hopes that Sara can see past his scars. Because underneath, his heart has begun beating again just for her.

Oh yeah! This is what I’m talking about! A novella that is full and rich, filled with enough angst to keep it going, romance that will make you swoon, and some drama to keep it interesting. Add in another trip to Jamison Valley and a story that fans demanded since The Coppersmith Farmhouse and I am spinning with glee!

I was so freaking excited to get Milo’s story. After being burned in an explosion his story takes a back seat to the other characters in Jamison Valley. But now we get to see what really happened and how he met Sara, the love of his life. This was everything I wanted and nothing like I expected.

description

Working on the burn unit, Sara is a sweet, caring and kind nurse that feels an instant attraction to Milo. His burns don’t distract from what draws her to him but his stoic acceptance of the pain incurred during his treatments makes her respect and care for him more. I loved that she had a genuine heart and although she has some professional struggles in regards to her growing feelings towards Milo, she worked around them and in the process fell madly in love.

”Her touch soothed the burns more than any cream or ointment on earth. Her voice was a dream, chasing away the dread and despair. When Sara was in the room, the pain was bearable.”

description

We don’t get much of Milo’s point of view, but we know he’s much like Sara in his demeanor. He is polite, kind, and not the type of guy to stand out in the sea of alphas that live in his hometown. But with the right woman, buttons can be pushed and protectiveness can rise up when needed. While this story doesn’t require much in the way of him standing up for her, it’s obvious he is completely alpha over her. Gotta love everything about that!

”No more crying, okay? I can’t take it.”
“I’ll try.” She gave me a small smile. “Is that just a guy thing? Not being able to see a girl cry.”
“No.” I ran my index finger up and over the hills of her knuckles. “I can handle tears. Just not yours.”

This book is filled with so many swoony moments, extreme chemistry between Milo and Sara and moments that will have you choking back a lump in your throat. Ms. Perry brings these characters to life, making them real and their story completely believable. I can’t express how much I loved this couple, their story and this return to Jamison Valley.

Can be read as a standalone.

Mostly heroine POV with a little from hero

This is sweet. The Candle Palace is an old book by Miss Perry. I have been wanting to read this series and I fnally get a chance.

The story is short. More like novella. Miss Perry packs a punch into the whole story. The story deals with more of Sara's background and family. The romance story is there. Quite in the background but somehow I felt swoon.

Overall a wonderful read for my bad day.

"But for you, I would have tried a million times. I´ve got a hell of a crush on you Sara Foster."

This is a two POV book, told by the POV´s of Milo and Sara.

I loved Sara as an FMC, I didn´t see that much of her during the Jamison Valley series and I loved getting to know more about her and Milo, and what their story was. Since this is a short novella, the vibes are more insta-lovish but with a hint of the Forbidden Love trope. The romance was really cute and sweet and the two of them had chemistry.

Since this book isn´t really set in the Jamison Valley, the side characters were new to me. I liked them nevertheless especially Luna and Kym. They had depth to them and I especially loved Lunas side story.

I liked the setting of the novella, the storyline was really interesting. I would have prefered a few more pages to make this more of a slow burn, but again this is a novella, so I am trying to treat it as such. I definitely would have loved to see a bit more of the Jamison Valley residents, but I felt like this was a really nice ending to the Jamison valley series nevertheless. Although I am really sad this series is over. I absolutely fell in love with it and all the residents and their stories. I would highly recommend it to anybody who loves smalltown romance.

Overall it was a nice ending to a series I am kind of sad to let go.
"And the Jamison Valley owned my soul." as Sara said.

This is a gorgeous little read. A novella in the Jamison Valley series, this is the story of local police officer, Milo and how he found his happy ending. It’s a short read, but it packs a punch with a lot of heart and a beautiful love story, and I loved it!

Milo was horribly burned in an explosion that occurred early in the series. We didn’t see a lot of him after that, except to know that he healed and met the love of his life, Sara. Well, this book takes us back to show us how Milo and Sara met and fell in love, and they have such a beautiful story.

Sara is the nurse who cares for Milo during his stay on the Burns Unit. It’s the lowest and most difficult point of Milo’s life as he deals with his injuries, but Sara is there for him, first as his caregiver, and then eventually as so much more.

“For a guy who’s been shot down more than once, I’m pretty gun-shy. But for you, I would have tried a million times. I’ve got a hell of a crush on you, Sara Foster.”

Their love story unfolds naturally and effortlessly, but it is strictly forbidden, which is not only a huge challenge for them, but also creates this sense of longing which makes it a really emotional read. They are so perfect for each other, you can feel how much they want each other, and it could be so easy, but they are in an impossible situation which creates a fantastic feeling of intensity and anticipation as we watch it all unfold.

“No more crying, okay? I can’t take it.”
“I’ll try.” She gave me a small smile. “Is that just a guy thing? Not being able to see a girl cry.”
“No.” I ran my index finger up and over the hills of her knuckles. “I can handle tears. Just not yours.”

I felt so much love for these characters! Milo is suffering, but he’s still an incredible romantic hero – sweet, gentle and kind with a touch of vulnerable innocence about him, but strong enough to pursue the girl he wants and showing his caring, supportive and protective side. And Sara is so gorgeous, with a huge heart and a sweetness that makes her perfect for Milo. These are two people who have been through hard times and who deserve something special, and after all of their longing for each other, I loved seeing them find that.

“Sara, you are not plain. Or dull.”
He framed my cheek with his hand. “Yes, I am.”
“No, babe, you’re not.” He bent and brushed his lips against mine. “You shine.”

There are a few other dramas unfolding that they need to deal with, but it’s pretty much all about the love story, which I loved! I also really like that the story is written in flashback style, which includes cameos from the girls of the series and gives us a glimpse of Milo and Sara’s life together in the present - years after they meet.

It could standalone, and it’s a must read for Jamison Valley fans, and I loved it!

4.5 stars.

This book is everything.

If you know me at all, you know I’ve been DYING for Milo’s story... since the day I finished The Coppersmith Farmhouse over two years.
And I honestly started losing hope. I didn’t think I’d ever get his story.
But holy shit! It’s here! AND I READ IT! And now I don’t even know what to do with myself!

I’m honestly speechless.
This was everything I hoped for and more.
Milo and Sara have such a raw and emotional story. You’ll be drawn in on page one.

I wish I had more words but for real... I. Am. Speechless.

Thank you, Devney for giving me this book.
I cried when I found out that you were writing it. I cried when I saw the cover. I cried when I got the paperback in my hand. I cried when I read it.
BECAUSE IT’S REAL. AND IT’S HERE! FINALLY!!!!

PS-I don’t know what to do with all my crazy #MiloforAllyson energy... where do I direct it now? What author should I bug next? 😂

“I don’t see scars when I look at you. I see a man who makes me feel safe. A man who makes me feel wanted and sexy. You don’t have to hide these scars from me. They don’t scare me.”

I have always been a huge fan of Devney Perry’s work and her stories are always the highest on my anticipated tbr list. Having said that, some of her masterpieces also happen to be some of my ALL TIME FAVES EVER, and when I discovered she was releasing a novella as part of the Jamison Valley series, I literally could not be more excited. The Candle Palace positively blew me away and while it is considered a novella, it wasn’t super short and more like a full-sized novel, so we really got a fulfilling and well-rounded story that is perfect for a series as amazing as Jamison Valley.

Milo and Sara’s love story is positively breathtaking and one that I believe is so epic that everyone should stop what they are doing and devour immediately. Milo has suffered an immense amount of pain, both physically and emotionally due to an explosion which occurred at work and the scars he bares are so much more than skin deep. Sara is the nurse who cares for Milo within the burn unit and while she can treat his wounds, with her care and compassion she may just have the power to heal him in more ways than one. Milo is not always the nicest to be around due to the immense pain and emotional turmoil he has suffered. I really felt for him and everything he had to endure as a result of those severe injuries. I could not think of anyone better than Sara to try to heal poor broken Miles, she really is a modern-day Florence Nightingale.

While I tend to steer clear of novellas as I have not had much luck, this story was profound, and it was written with so much depth; it had such an emotional plot. The characters were crafted so perfectly and their development throughout the story was phenomenal. I absolutely loved this story from start to finish and could not recommend it enough as Milo and Sara’s love story is one that deserves to be shared with the world. There is a reason Devney Perry is my favourite author, because she continues to write stories that I feel deep down to my core and literally take my breath away. Be sure to one click this masterpiece.

This was so unexpectedly heartbreaking and sweet. I remembered Milo being injured in a previous book and it was such a treat to get his story.

As mentioned, Milo is burnt badly in an explosion while he was working as a policeman for the local sheriff’s office. He is being treated in a hospital in Spokane, needing lots of skin grafts and numerous dressing changes every day. He is in incredible pain but there is one highlight of each day, his nurse Sara.

Sara loves her job working in the burns unit. There are definitely heartbreaking moments but also so many moments that make her appreciate the strength and resilience of people. When she first meets Milo he is going through the worst part of his recovery but there is something about that draws her to his room. Even when she doesn’t need to be there.

Milo has very kind eyes and speaks so softly to Sara. They become each other’s sounding boards, confiding in each other and forming a really sweet friendship. However, things begin to change between them and Sara knows that she is walking a very fine professional line. She needs to put some distance between them before she makes a career defining mistake.

Sara’s and Milo’s attachment to each other does not go unnoticed by other staff and this creates a big secondary issue for her with another staff member who also has their eye on a chance with Sara. Milo becomes increasingly agitated and impatient with the hospital imposed separation between them. When you know you have found ‘the one’ you just know and there is no way he is letting go of this beautiful woman that has made him feel more alive than he ever has felt before.

I absolutely loved this!

This was probably my least favourite out of the series and I think for a few reasons.

This is about Milo who was in an explosion in book one and was severely injured so this book follows his recovery at a hospital where he meets Sara. She’s his nurse and they instantly feel a connection to each other.

Insta love is a trope I have a love/hate relationship with and in this instance it didn’t work out for me. I get why it was a bit insta love because it was only a novella but I really wish we had got a full book because this had so much potential.

I also think that this should’ve been the second book in the series rather than the last, because by book 5, years have passed since his injury whereas his book takes you back to it. I also kinda didn’t care for Milo by that point either?

It was still cute but I just wanted more from it.

The Candle Palace by Devney Perry will warm your heart and soul!

In this wonderful novella, Devney gives us the long awaited love story of Milo & Sara. The story begins in present day Jamison Valley, 12 years after Milo's tragic accident that landed him in the burn unit of a hospital in Spokane... A hospital where he meets Sara. The connection between these two was so beautiful to be apart of. Sara gave Milo the strength and courage to pull through during his darkest moments. Love blossomed in room 503... lite by the light of a tea light.

The Candle Palace, nicknamed by another burn patient named Luna who will surely captivate your heart; this novel was a bit angsty but had a whole lot of spirit. It truly is the perfect ending to such a sublime series--a series full of stories I will always come back to. Thank you so much, Devney!

Milo and Sarah had a sweet story. It was really good to find out how they met and fell in love. I only wish Sarah had, had a little more, umph! In her. Kicked a certain someone in the balls.

I have loved the Jamison Valley series. This was a nice conclusion. Happy reading!

What a freaking wonderful conclusion to the series, and my new favorite couple!!! Oh my heart. This is a novella, but showcases the low key relationship that was mentioned throughout the series. In book one, Milo and Jess were injured in an explosion. This is the story of how Milo met Sara, his nurse.

Sara is assigned to the burn unit and takes a special liking to Milo. He had kind eyes, and she’s as drawn to him as he is to her. Both a little shy and awkward, they’re so sweet and perfect together! Aside from her annoying and flaky mother and her drug addict brother, she’s all alone in life, and Milo comes along at the perfect time.

Of course, it’s forbidden because reasons, but that doesn’t stop these two sweethearts! They battle a handsy doctor, a ruined childhood home, and all kinds of red tape, but they make it in the end and I just loved these two!

‘Maybe his feelings for me weren’t as strong as mine were for him, but he wanted me to stay. That was something. That was everything.’

The Candle Palace by Devney Perry was incredibly sweet, romantic and encompassed the purity of humanity as well as its counterpart, compassion and ultimately love. We really enjoyed the love story of Sara and Milo, who we know from previous books in this wonderful series. There’s no question that Devney Perry writes the most heart-warming romance that’s both classy and subtle in its seduction.

‘Here, it was just two strangers keeping one another company. Here, we were two new friends quickly becoming…more.’

The Candle Palace was a slow build romance in some respects, yet it also had an intense and immediate attraction. A somewhat forbidden romance, under difficult circumstances, which builds on an initial act of empathy and understanding. It was swoon-worthy, low on angst with emotional moments of heartbreak and pain.

‘When Sara was in the room, the pain was bearable. Sara. Even her name brought me comfort.’

Devney Perry, as always, has some wonderful and profound messages in her writing and we love her for this very fact. On the whole, her stories are always perfectly balanced without being ‘preachy’ about a personality trait or habit. However, there can indeed be a fine line as no reader wants to feel guilt when reading fictional romance, which sadly we experienced to some degree whilst reading The Candle Palace. Feeling chastised resulted in a disconnect at times. It most likely won’t bother the majority but sadly it did for us at times.

“I don’t see scars when I look at you. I see a man who makes me feel safe. A man who makes me feel wanted and sexy. You don’t have to hide these scars from me. They don’t scare me.”

The Candle Palace had raw emotion at its heart which compelled us as it felt incredibly intense. In a story that almost relied solely on the two main characters, we felt their pain and struggles in our hearts. They held their own and we rejoiced and fell in love with their love. A love that felt incredibly solid and unwavering in the face of adversity. Both Milo and Sara had this gentleness about them, a beauty that almost felt vulnerable, which was incredibly endearing. The Candle Palace is a quick enjoyable read in the wonderful Jamison Valley series, which we adore and highly recommend.

“I’m grateful for the explosion. All the pain. It was worth it. To be here, lying in your bed. It was all worth it.”

Meh

A bit awks but this didn't do very much for me. Surprising for a Devney Perry as she's usually a solid 4-5 star read for me but I wasn't feeling the feels, the chemistry wasn't there and the jeopardy didn't feel threatening or give it much tension.

On reflection, I think the prologue set me off on the wrong foot as it's set in the present where we learn who she's with then we go back see how they got together. It was kind of a big old spoiler tbh.

Standalone but part of a much better series. If you were asking for my advice I'd say read those instead.

The Jamison Valley series is one of my absolute favorites! And I was so happy to learn Milo and Sara’s story was going to be told! And it’s everything that I wanted and more!

I loved the balance between the present and the past. That the love between Milo and Sara started so strongly and has defined their relationship from the start. That something so beautiful and wonderful could rise from such a tragedy and difficult time.

And I absolutely loved how The Candle Palace reminded me that love really and truly is blind. That love doesn’t notice scars and other imperfections. And that’s evident between Milo and Sara—she doesn’t see the scars, she sees the man beneath the exterior and loves that his scars don’t define Milo, they prove his strength and devotion. And this “blindness” is also shared in Milo’s love for Sara. He couldn’t help falling in love with her and her beautiful heart. He finds her beautiful inside and out.

And that, my friends, is what I call marriage goals. Finding that one person who loves you for you. Loves you despite your faults or imperfections. The Candle Palace is a love story—true enduring love and I hated for it to end. ~ Missy, 5 stars

***

When the only complaint you can come up with at the end of a book is that you want more, I mean...that's basically a compliment.

And that's exactly how I feel having turned the last page of The Candle Palace. Don't get me wrong, this is a full story and I do not feel cheated out of anything. But I loved Milo and Sara and would have liked more time with them, done a little bit of a deeper dive with them, simply because I loved all the ways they made my heart happy.

I make no secret of the fact that I love a wounded hero and Milo was one of the best. I loved the slightly forbidden dynamic of their story, and the sort of desperate way that caused their feelings to bloom. I loved that they didn't get in their own way, and I loved how steadfastly loyal they were to each other when life obstacles came at them.

I just...loved them. And I loved how this (long) novella rounded out the Jamison Valley series. How many times can I use the word "Love" in one review? Did I make myself clear?!

In all - it's a relatively simple, sweet, and super quick read - but your heart will thank you for the time spent with these fantastic characters in the end! ~ Shelly, 4 Stars

SOUL. This book can be summed up in one word it'll be Soul! It'll knock on the door of your heart and just echo in it for a long time. This much I can guarantee, you won't be able to put the book down and you will miss it the moment you finish it.
Beautiful Sentiments that explore oceanic depths, Real Love which climbs new heights, goes behind superficial facades and false colors of first impressions.
"I don't see scars when I look at you. I see a man who makes me feel safe. A man who makes me feel wanted and sexy. You don't have to hide these scars from me. They don't scare me."
Devney delves deep in the matters of the heart, shows us deeper connections that link the soulmates. They could be blind and still attach, such is the magnetic attraction that pulls Milo Phillips and Sara Foster, when they meet for the first time in the Burn Unit of Sacred Hearts Hospital in Spokane.

description

Nicknamed The Candle Palace by another beautiful patient, Luna, cause she considered herself a candle-A Human Torch. And Sara brought her tea lights of hope.
The least glamorous place to begin a love story which deviates from every known norm prescribed in the Romance fiction.
"Here, it was easy to pretend there wasn't an entire hospital that had walls, one with rules and reprimand. Here, it was just two strangers keeping one another company. Here, we were two new friends quickly becoming....more"

description

The hero is not a strapping hulky alpha with 6 pack abs. He's right now lying in a hospital bed with a concussion, lacerations and half his body burnt and melted skin to reveal muscle and tissue inside
This type of love can only be described as divine and courageous. It takes strength of spirit to look beyond devastating good looks and fall for the actual personality which is a human mix of vulnerablity & awkwardness. Devney cleverly doesn't embellish the story with unnecessary grand gestures or flowery lines. It doesn't need it. The story is pure and powerful, it shines through brilliantly

description

The setting of the story is unique and unusual, So REAL and humane, I was totally dumbfounded and awestruck. Devney has become my instant one click author. The story not only pulled at my heart strings, it strum them to make wonderful music. I need to go read the Jameson series and will do so soonest.
Meanwhile you must read this wonderful story asap.

After reading and loving all the books in the Jamison Valley series, I felt there was a story missing so when I heard about The Candle Palace I was super excited to finally find out how Milo and Sarah met and fell in love.

If you have read The Coppersmith Farmhouse you will know that Milo was burnt badly and sent to a special burns unit for treatment.

Sarah is a nurse at the burns unit, she has the biggest heart, some patients are just special to her, the first time she sees Milo she feels a connection and even though Milo is in agony he feels the connection to Sarah too.

Sarah was there for Milo through his treatment keeping their relationship professional 90% of the time anyway and when Sarah needed help against a sex pest and the BITCH aka Sarah's mum, Milo was there to take care of her.

Out of tradegy becomes this beautiful love story between two wonderful people, find out how Milo and Sarah got their happily ever after.

In this book the author gives us the tale of cop Milo and nurse Sarah. Overall this was a sweet one time read, but it didn't pull on the heartstrings as potently as I would have liked.

For some strange reason the book also felt short, at least that was one of my first thoughts when I had finished.

What a great novella to finish out The Jamison Valley Series.

Milo and Sara were so sweet together. I haven’t read many forbidden hospital romances. A nurse falling for her burn patient. I love that Milo was connected to one of the other characters in this series.

Thank you for writing this book! Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to return to Jamison Valley!!!! I have missed those folks like crazy!

What a sweet story this was. Milo needed to share his heart with someone, and Sara needed someone to love.

I absolutely love the friendships that have formed between the Jamison Valley women!

I thoroughly enjoyed every single bit of this book! The love, the alpha-ness of Milo (swoon!!), the real life issues, the way they met... all of it!

This is the novella brought me such happiness! Throughout the Jamison Valley series, Milo has made appearances and he has been the character that I have always wondered about. How does his HEA happen? What were the lasting effects of his injuries? He may have been a side character at the beginning but he made such a huge impact on the series that he for sure needed his story told!
Devney Perry was able to make the book start out in a way I didn't see coming which. I loved reading about Sara. She was brave, she was strong, and even though their drama was completely different than the others, their story has just as much of an impact on me as all the others.
The Candle palace is unique, heartfelt, and just as potent as the previous books in the series. It has love, just a bit of suspense, and the heart that we have come to expect from this writer.

The Candle Palace is a novella part of Devney Perry’s Jamison Valley series and the last I needed to read to be finished with the series. Sara and Milo’s romance is one we get glimpses of throughout the series but in this we get a flashback story of how they met all those years ago!

Sara is a nurse and works in a hospital burn unit in Spokane, Washington. One of her former patients started calling the burn unit “the candle palace” so that’s where the title of this novella comes from. She gets a new patient in, Milo, and is immediately taken with him and he with her. Milo is from Jamison Valley and is looking forward to returning to his small town hometown in Montana and just maybe he can convince Sara to join him… When others at work start to notice Sara spending a little too much time and attention on Milo, she’s removed from being his caretaker and has to try and keep her distance. So because of that this relationship has a bit of a forbidden vibe. Sara also deals with a creepy doctor she works with and complicated relationships with her mom and brother.

Good story.
Well written.
Devoted Hero.
Milo and Sara.
No intimate scenes with anyone other than the Hero and heroine.
No cheating.
Other man drama in the sense that another man is interested but the heroine doesn't encourage him.
References to earlier books and events so best to read series in order not to spoil it.
Prologue is present time.
Chapter 1 is the heroine sharing the story of how they met.
I did feel it felt short, ending was fine but certain events felt a bit rushed to me, there could have been more scenes with her brother and mother but maybe that's for a future book, who knows.
It has been commented on as a novella, hence expecting it to be shorter but it is marked as book 6 in the series.
I liked that neither were particularly experienced with the opposite sex. Both hadn't been with anyone else for a long time.
HEA.

The Candle Palace was such a wonderful suprise and great addition to The Jamison Valley Series. The Candle Palace might just be a novella, but this story certainly packs a punch. It will keep you on your toes and your eyes glued to the pages…

The Candle Palace follows the story of Milo and Sara. I really loved the way the author decided to tell Milo and Sara’s story. We start off in the present, Sara is surrounded by her girlfriends, one thing leads to another and Sara begins to tell the story of how she and Milo met….

From the moment Sara started to tell her story, I was hooked. Sara was an amazing nurse who loved her patients and worked hard at her job. When Milo came into her care, I’d like to think that it was an act of fate. Sara was drawn to Milo and had a hard time fighting the feelings she had for him. Soon, these two would form an unforgettable friendship that would lead to a love that lasts a lifetime.

Now, the road to happily ever after wasn’t an easy one for these two. There were a lot of obsatcles along the way. But, these two had something special from the very beginning and I loved watching them come to terms with their feelings and accepting the things they have no control over.

The Candle Palace is a sweet little addition to The Jamison Valley Series. Sara is incredibly sweet and compassionate, and Milo is totally swoon worthy and doesn’t plan to let Sara go without a fight. Ugh! I just loved getting lost in these two and seeing them find their way. Their story kept my stomach full of butterflies and my eyes glued to the pages. Of course, The Candle Palace couldn’t just be all hearts and roses. It had its fair share of drama along the way. And I loved every single second of it.
