Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
Excellent volume. To be honest, I would have been happy with just the conclusion to the tournament of power, but that is just half the book. The next story arc is introduced.
In between the tournament of power conclusions and the next story arc there is a page to acknowledge the Broly movie happened, but is not going to be covered in the main comic volumes sort of like the Resurrection F movie.
The action for the conclusion of the action is packed and well done. I got a better understanding of Jiren's reasoning from the comics. I also like Whis secret reason for training both Goku and Vegeta at the same time. In the second story arc, I liked Vegeta using tactics of watching a Galactic Petrolman getting the drop on three of the most powerful beings in the 7th Universe. Also what Vegeta is known for his pride, turning into his own form of honour.
If I have one disappointment, it is the Broly movie that was not covered in the comic volumes. Though I could always watch the movie again. I'm looking forward to what happens next.
EN The great Tournament of Power finally comes to an end, and its outcome is, for me, only 50% surprising. I had already anticipated part of what would happen, but the other half truly caught me off guard. It was a magnificent event, and it will be very hard to surpass it in the future.
Meanwhile, our heroes are summoned to join forces with the Galactic Patrol to face a new threat looming over the Universe.

For the first few chapter of the tournament of power and the preview volumes of the manga show's that its much better than the anime. But after chapter 35 and beyond I loses the hype on it. The narrative direction of Toyotaro and a littlebit dry compare to the last arc (Zamasu/Future Trunk's Arc) and the power scale that I thought the manga fixes totally went off. Toppo fought goku with SSJ Blue once and win. Why is he so afraid of it now?
and the pacing on some chapter is basically one giant page of talk no jutso. Yes, he done that on the Trunk's Arc but atleast on that the you actually needed to explain the plot via conversation/commentary which on this one shouldn't. THEIR JUST FIGHT ON A LIMITED TIME, NO NEED TO TALK.
and the most important scene is just half of a page
Finally! The new non anime content I’ve been craving to get to and that’s been itching at my mind ever since I finished the show years ago and heard they probably would never continue it. I never could have guessed the tournament of power would literally lead into goku and Vegeta space patrol members/adventures… but I gotta say I’m here for it. (not gonna lie though I am hype for goro)
There's no doubt that the Jiren story arc was the best event so far in this series and it has such a fun finale that undoubtedly keeps you at the edge of your seat till the very end. The aftermath was a bit predictable but nonetheless, it was epic for that right reasons.
This volume also introduces the next story arc and a new villain while also giving some other silent characters the chance to be central to the plot. It's goofy fun, but it remains to be seen if it will be worthwhile.
Who knew, a new power level, seriously, this series have become a parody of itself, it's stuck on repeat and has nothing else to give, the new story arc is about a guy who eats people and was defeated by Grand Supreme Kai, now, where have I seen that before, oh wait... right. Also, that is one ugly book cover.
Kinda offended at how rushed the battle with Jiren was. I get the fact that the manga wants to distance itself from the anime, but why even include this arc if it was just going to be shoehorned and rushed through? Not cool.
C-17 coming back and saving every damn universe out there with his wish was unexpected but welcome. And look at Vegeta and Goku actually being friends, poking fun and each other and training together. The series could have ended there and I would have been happy, but the next story arc got introduced in the second half of this book. The new big bad is here and Goku is almost scared of him for once which doesn’t bode well. And what’s new, he’s after the Dragon Balls of Namek. But Vegeta keeps showing his character development by putting his ass on the line to protect the Namek against Moro who wants to decimate their people by eating them - and I’m always glad to see how far he’s come.
Wow! okay finally. We are done with the tournament of power. I am finally away from all that anime stuff. Now all the stories I am reading are original to the manga, just like how it was from the beginning. It was crazy how they skipped over all the movies, how they literally said the broley movie is for another time. I love that. They just said that Vegeta and Goku got super strong but in another story, I am no longer needing to worry about all that stuff that the anime already showed me. I get to read and learn about everything already.
The conclusion to the Tournament of Power arc. A refreshing end to the this particular story that didn't just rely on Goku...although there was a lot of Goku fan service here. Another power-up; they're not as exciting as they used to be from the original.
Finally we end the tournament arc and get to the brand new one never animated!
The first half is the end of the tournament and it's pretty intense. A way different ending than the anime in how the good guys win. I actually really enjoyed the loss of certain characters since they made more sense than the anime. Maybe not as epic ending but still really good.
Then we move on to a new enemy. A mystery goat looking guy with magic decides to revive himself in the modern day age. But his mission is slightly unclear. He wants the dragon balls but what else does he want? Vegeta and Goku go to stop him but maybe the two strongest warriors aren't enough?
The first half is good, but the second half is great. Plenty of suspense, interesting ideas, and funny moments. Super returns strong in this volume and I want more. A 4 out of 5.
9/10 the ending felt a bit different than the anime, but I heard there’s a few differences in the tournament when comparing to the anime. It was a great battle with a great ending, 17 was hiding all along and became the last survivor after frieza sacrificed himself to take out Jiren, while also taking out goku and vegeta as well. Also, great transition from a hard fought battle into a little down time for a few moments then instantly back in action. The new foe Moro looks like a differently being the saiyans have ever dealt with so it is looking interesting. Also the fact that Moro’s finds new namek for dragon balls makes for a interesting plot.

Tournament of Power: Really great Saga, while the anime had more hype moments I must say I like the way Gohan was dealt with but Kefla vs Gohan was disappointing being mostly off panel. I prefer Master Roshi vs Jiren and Roshi being the reason for Goku’s UI and the reminiscence of him being a student of the School of Turtle which the anime completely disregarded. Jiren was MVP, my favorite DB character after Vegeta
The Tournament of Power continues to play out a bit differently then it did in the anime. After its conclusion a totally new arc begins. From here is were events will play out which have yet to be animated.
Passing the anime!!! This Volume finishes the Tournament of Power and continues on into new territory. Will they make more episodes to continue? Highlights: - Goku finally reaches Ultra Instinct Perfected, hair going gray. Goku vs Jiren - When Goku loses as Jiren keeps getting stronger and stronger, Goku and Vegeta work perfectly in tandem and get his end set up... - Jiren takes out Vegeta, then falls for the trap. Freeza and Goku work together, sacrificing themselves to take out Jiren... and it is then revealed that Android 17 didn't self-destruct and he wins the Tournament as last standing. - 17's wish is for all the universes to come back, and Whis makes Freeza back to life. - The manga acknowledges the Broly movie, but chooses not put it in manga form. NEW STUFF - The gang gets word that someone is taking Buu from Mr Satan's mansion. They fly off to rescue. - Upon arrival, they find out its Space Patrol who wants him. Inside Buu is a powerful entity known as the "Great Lord of Lords" and they need him to help stop an escaped criminal. They knock out Goku and Vegeta and take them as well. - Goku and Vegeta get inducted into the Space Patrol (having to take the logo on their uniforms) and they go with Jaco to help arrest a gang of space pirates, - Once the gang is captured, we finally get to hear more about the escaped criminal: Moro - Moro (looking like a kind of goat-man (huge horns) has been imprisoned for 10 Million Years. He destroyed hundreds of planets, absorbing their life force energy to keep himself going. - The gang reveals that Moro is heading for New Namek, to get his hands on the Namekian Dragon Balls. Goku and Vegeta instant transmission to the planet and warn them. - Goku and Vegeta vs Moro.... just the beginning of what will be a crazy long battle, I think.
Glad to be in new territory! Looking forward to Vol 10. Recommend.
This was such a great volume as it serves as the finals for the tournament of power as we see Goku fighting Jiren in his ultra instinct and its such a great fight and then we have him team with Vegeta and the two fight with everything they have got and then some stuff with Jiren's approval by his master and more stuff, Freeza's second coming and 17's ultimate victory, it was a macguffin but such a great moment for Jiren where he learns team work and more good stuff for Goku and all the universe coming back and the end for the tournament but it was so good! And the Freeza revived and then Broly thing happens (the movie reference) and then them joining the Galactic Patrol and meeting Agent Merus to apprehend their next big threat: Moro! This arc is gonna be good as there are some cool moments and revelations that will happen next with Moro! The story was brilliant and the threats don't stop at all for them but thats what exciting! Toriyama even after 50 volumes continues to increase the hype of the series!
The first half is 10/10, the second 6/10. The finale of the tournament is really cool, and the fight between UI Goku and Jiren, and then between Goku-Vegeta combo vs Jiren is just great. The final twist is very rewarding, too, and shows how much our favorite Saiyans still have to learn, at least when to comes to strategy and cooperation ;).
The second half is all right, setting up a new villain and expanding the universe a bit further. My main complaint is that the poor Namekians always seem to get the short straw in these arc - I mean, if you have a whole universe to play with, why don't you just create some new designs and introduce new races and characters? This seems lazy - just as some of the recurring jokes, which never were funny to begin with. However, I'll reserve judgment on this new arc till I read some more of it. It shows some promise (and finally the villain shapes up to be suitably menacing and exhibits some new powers, not just riffs off the earlier ones).
Amazing! This is by far the best volume of DBS so far. While I do admit that I wish the tournament went on a bit longer, the quick wrap up was fantastic and the twist is easily one of the best I've seen in Dragonball as a whole. While the anime definitely did aspects better compared to the manga the manga makes Jiren much more of a fleshed out character even though it's slight. The beginning of the Moro arc is also going very smoothly. The first manga original arc seems like it's off to a great start and the world building that is accompanying it is entertaining. Vegeta feeling remorseful and becoming borderline heroic was not a change I expected but is a welcome one. All in all hands down an amazing volume.

9/10: What a perfect ending to the first Tournament of Power! Not only did Goku and Vegeta get to use their full strength, but Frieza and the other 11 universes were brought back to life as a result of Android 17 being the last one standing! After all of that, now Goku, Vegeta, and Buu have been tasked with defeating an evil, magic-wielding creature named Moro by the Galactic Patrol!
Picking up where the show left off! The manga seems to jump really quick from one point to the next, but still a fun read. Really interested in what they started to build up towards in this volume. Solid 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 for Vegeta 😌
