Wonderful wonderful volume!

I was so excited to see that things picked up right where volume seven ended and that volume eight jumped right into exciting developments!

Though oh my goodness!!

CAN PEOPLE PLEASE LEAVE OUR COUPLE ALONE?!! UGHHHHH!

If there was anything frustrating about this volume is that there is always someone who has something to say! I don't know how many times I just wanted to yell, "Shut up already and leave them be!" Our girl Uka doesn't need that kind of negativity in her life! She is trying to grow every. single. day. and doesn't need anyone raining on her parade simply because someone feels she isn't pretty enough or good enough to stand by Kai's side! Girl is giving her all and I am immensely proud of her and how she is growing! And good job to her for telling those teachers to watch her grow because yes watch her grow rather than use her for an ad for your school! You definitely aren't *genuinely* caring for her well-being as you only care about how her SLIGHTLY lower grades will affect your overall school's image. UGH! Boils my blood! LOL!

While I am over the moon about all the amazing romance, I confess I really loved seeing Kai showing all kinds of expressions, including a blushy one! He has really expressed himself more verbally and I feel I have been thriving! Plus it was awesome to see how much he likes Uka in wanting to tell everyone that they do in fact like each other! He is as just in love with her as she is with him! Eeeeeppp!!

Really really excited to see what happens next even though I'm not too happy about an interloper coming in to cause problems. Like, no, please don't. However, I know our leads are rock solid despite what anyone may say!

Cheers to more exciting romantic developments in the next volume!

Well, congrats, I can’t think of this manga any more without having the opening bars of the theme song from the anime getting stuck in my head.

Uka has always been ridiculously inexperienced at pretty much everything, but you’d be hard pressed to not be sheltered with a helicopter parent and a 5pm curfew. She comes by it honestly compared to many similar heroines who have no excuse.

She’s been making changes though, sometimes timid, sometimes bold. Which has all lead to her slowly stumbling towards a relationship with Kai, who’s at least interested and likes her, so it’s not an unrequited mess on top of things.

For all his popularity and desirability to the females, however, it’s kind of obvious that Kai has minimal experience at dating himself. He knows what to say, but he’s still kind of a teenage bonehead who hasn’t figured it out quite as much as he thinks.

He gets by because he genuinely likes Uka; otherwise he’s kind of a dope this time out. That whole thing with the restaurant basically just serves to tell off a girl and also make Uka feel bad. Not that the former isn’t deserved, but parading Uka in there to hammer home the point feels way ridiculous.

Everything strong in this volume starts and ends with Uka. The way she gets around to dating Kai is really something, and I did like the way he just meets her shot for shot. He’s really good about making things work on her terms most of the time.

And while she hasn’t quite had the big glow-up, she is still Uka at the end of the day (much appreciated). The courage she shows in going the extra mile with her outfit was really sweet. She’s absolutely my favorite part of the series. Kai might be the boost, but she gets all the credit for making these changes.

Okay, next, phew, that whole exams thing; I just don’t know about this one. I appreciate Kai is trying his best to not only not bring Uka down, but also recognizes that her home life means he has to handle this with some delicacy.

There’s something here that feels like a culture thing, which I am generously suggesting, as the alternative to that is that it’s dumb. The way the teachers and the school start interjecting into Uka’s love life isn’t played for laughs, but it’s one of the silliest road blocks the series has put up yet.

It doesn’t help that the outcome might be a little too predictable to boot - I saw that whole thing coming from a mile away. I did appreciate that it didn’t really change Kai, at least, in terms of his plans. At least it shows a new side to Uka’s dad.

And said plans involve not going to college, so Kai and Uka suddenly find themselves split into separate classes with little time for one another. Helpfully, a window across the way allows for Uka to see how the other half lives in order to make things complicated.

The parts where Kai and Uka are actually alone together are the best. Kai’s got the poor impulse control that Uka could use a bit more of and there are some stolen moments here that are super romantic and very earned. And she’s so earnest that it’s super effective on her poor boyfriend.

Which is the thing. These two like one another and when that’s at the fore, this is really good. There are some things here I don’t think are especially good and feel a little silly. Uka’s journey has been really good and this takes a couple paths I don’t think it needed to.

3.5 stars - I’m certainly still shockingly fond of Uka’s continued growth, but I do think Kai’s in need of a bit himself at this point. He’s okay as her support, but she’s miles above him in my estimation and it could stand to be levelled out some.

I recently wrote in my episode review for the anime adaptation of this series that Uka forgets that Kai is just a kid himself. This volume drives that home - he's trying to figure out this whole dating thing, but he still doesn't actually know what the hell he's doing. He's been coasting by, and now it's time for Uka to play the role he played for her - and I think she's done enough work on herself to be up to the task.

3.5⭐️

All of these students seriously need to shut the hell up already. I’m so done with the constant badmouthing of Uka in every single chapter. She tries so hard and is genuinely such a sweet person, yet every npc just has to talk trash for no reason at all whatsoever. In their eyes, she’s somehow not good enough to date Kai and they keep talking about how it’s only a matter of time before he dumps her for a prettier girl. It’s honestly frustrating and repetitive as hell, like mind your own goddamn business and stay out of their relationship. It is truly not that hard. Don’t even get me started on the teachers. Why does it even matter who she’s dating when her grades are flawless and completely unaffected either way!? Grown ass adults, hello?? Abe (or whatever his name is) is literally the only normal teacher in that entire school. Also starting to think Tomoya has some sort of feelings for Uka based on that look he gave Kai in chapter 31.

This volume was so cute!! I love how kai is FINALLY BEING EXPRESSIVE towards Uka AHHHH SO CUTE!!
I especially liked their little outing at the start of the volume where kai puts some girl in her place AS HE SHOULD
I also really love how considerate he is like studying hard for her and meeting her dad to let him know that he only has good intentions with her
Honestly the only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because why the hell are Uka and Kai not in the same class 0-0
like I understand but girl u did NOT need to separate them

Honey Lemon Soda
Tome 8

A suivre.

I continue to be impressed with how Uka stands up for herself: not in a blustering, aggressive way, but that still states her feelings unmistakably to the people around her.

Kai's harder for me to read than Uka, but he has the same honest streak, I think. Whenever people around him misinterpret his actions, or snipe at Uka for daring to be attractive to Kai, more or less (which happens a lot), he tells them what's what in no uncertain terms. In that sense, at least, I don't see him as being as much of a mismatch with her as the trope-y popular guy/reticent girl setup made me think at the beginning.

This title is very much an example of a shoujo manga staple that I find rather stifling, where no one on earth can think about anything but the main couple's relationship. Even the teachers and Uka's dad are in the mix, as they show concern either for Uka's grades as they've started dating, or the extent of Kai's romantic intentions towards Uka. It all works out in the end, thanks to our couple's individual efforts, but I wish that somebody would let up on spiting them, supporting them, pressuring them, etc., once in a while.

I really liked the last episode in this volume, where Uka joins the art club. Her classmates' malice in junior high made her miserable in a school where club participation was mandatory. Now she feels confident enough in herself and her support network to join up in second year "...because I finally have enough emotional leeway now." No wonder her friends are awed, and put their hands on her shoulders like she was a talisman. So cute.

this series is MADDENING. Uka and Kai are very cute but there continues to be no clear reason why Kai likes her other than a savior complex.

what’s worse is that there is CONSTANT internalized misogyny and victim blaming in these books. ALL THE TIME. that would be fine if the characters or the series itself interrogated or critiqued those behaviors in any way, but it *really* doesn’t.

what happened to Serina being a kind, supportive ex who’s cheering Uka on? where did she go? I don’t think she’s been around for two volumes now. instead we get Uka’s classmates telling her she’s not good enough for Kai, she’s not working hard enough to deserve him as her boyfriend, and she goes “yeah I need to be better” and somehow that’s?? the correct answer???? the series doesn’t question this attitude at all?????? the girls are all acting catty and mean and fighting over boys and now there’s a *rival* on the way ooooooo oh no what will Uka do???????

can we stop pitting girls against each other for boys’ attention PLEASE.

I just. can’t read this anymore.

This one was so brilliant and a great read, Kai and Uka are now in a relationship and they are so cute together. In their figuring out how this relationship will go for them and how they will progress it for each other. Uka is so cute and lovely, and Kai's reaction to her is so brilliant and stunning. Now that everyone knows, and that they proved that it would not effect their studies Uka's father approves of them it really feels so cute and wholesome. The way they celebrate each other's birthdays is awesome and so them, it was so cute. It is so nice to see them grow as a couple and become more comfortable with each other, with slight bit of drama involved. Second year seems so fun and more challenges will definitely pop up now, it will be intresting to see how they handle it and what will be next for them as a couple. This was so worth the read and it made me giggle like mad, this was so enjoyable and fun.

The starting is hilarious. All of that drama and the declarations, even kissing, and Uka still didn't think they were dating yet? It's like when she first asked Ayumi to be her friend in a panicked rush and Ayumi thought they already were friends. At least Kai seems willing to go along with it, if not maybe slightly angling to get her to admit it. The split classrooms in different buildings seemed like a pretty major hurdle, especially with Kai's popularity and Uka's insecurities, but it doesn't look like he's willing to let that get in the way of things. The rest of the girls would fare much better if they gave up now instead of continuing to needle Uka about their relationship failing because of the split classes. That curfew change isn't a whole lot either, but hopefully, they can make the most of it and come out stronger for all of this.

Coming straight from the anime into the manga, I was blown away by how much deeper the story feels here. People often call Uka a crybaby, but she’s not weak. She’s careless, shaped by her upbringing, and her growth makes perfect sense when you see her background.

Kai isn’t just the “cool” one either. He’s still a kid, figuring things out, and that honesty makes their bond so real. And in this volume? I was literally peeling back my own emotions. The things Kai says, and the way Uka shows so much love - it’s wild and hilarious.

Vol. 8 isn’t just romance. It’s about love, growth, and finding the courage to stand while still reaching for someone else’s hand.

Absolutely, 100%, adore this series! °˖✧◝(⁰▿ ⁰)◜ ✧˖°

Only complaint is that I don’t know the original language so I have to wait for English which you gotta be strategic about….. stop reading at a point that seems like the arc is finished. In this case, they just started their second year, so imma wait a bit until I read the series again because I know it’s gonna be juicy!

Also, I love how she is growing and he is getting possessive. At least, that’s what it felt like with this volume.

This was one of the better volumes. I especially appreciate how the main couple aren't in the same class anymorw and how separation can affect relationships. There were some cringe moments towards the beginning that literally had me squirming from second hand embarrassment. The author definitely knows how to describe those embarrassing emotions with first love and crushes.
