The Mechanics of Love

Rate this book
Adam Wendover is not in a good mood when he walks out of a meeting in Florence, Colorado, and realizes he is going to have to drive back to Denver in a snowstorm, and the main interstate is a parking lot. Deciding that all-wheel drive and luck will give him better odds of getting home, he gambles on a winding mountain road instead. And then he promptly hits a large rock. Franklin “Rust” Scott has lived in a small mountain town his entire life. Abandoned by his mother to live with his gruff, mechanic grandfather, he enjoys running a repair shop and gas station along the highway. He’s just getting ready to close the place down and go home to wait out the snow, when an expensive German import with bad suspension problems pulls into the parking lot. Neither of the two men were looking for romance, but close quarters can lead to unexpected things. As the snow melts, choices are made, a relationship is forged, and things begin to look up for both of them. It all seems so easy, at least until a character from Adam’s past appears, determined to make him see reason and return to Boston with her. Please Note: This book contains adult language and steamy adult activities, it is intended for 18+ Adults Only. Novel, approximately 31,000 words in length. HEA (happy ever after ending). Does not end with a "cliffhanger." Themes include: Forced proximity, snow storm, cat, family drama, return of an ex.

‘Folks with fancy cars usually go down into Denver for repairs.’

Max Hudson is now one of the more important authors of the genre of MM romances. Yes, there are many authors – men and women – who understand the subject matter and treat it well and erotically, but what Max adds to his stories is a fine sense of appreciation for history, fantasy, the effects of previous wars, and now with this book – the coincidences leading to pairing and the effects of previous loves. His chief attribute – the one that sets him apart from other MM authors – is his careful character building before the romance sets in.

The synopsis is particularly well written – ‘Attorney Adam Wendover is not in a good mood when he walks out of a meeting in Florence, Colorado, and realizes he is going to have to drive back to Denver in a snowstorm, and the main interstate is a parking lot. Deciding that all-wheel drive and luck will give him better odds of getting home, he gambles on a winding mountain road instead. And then he promptly hits a large rock. Mechanic Franklin “Rust” Scott has lived in a small mountain town his entire life. Abandoned by his mother to live with his gruff, mechanic grandfather, he enjoys running a repair shop and gas station along the highway. He’s just getting ready to close the place down and go home to wait out the snow, when an expensive German import with bad suspension problems pulls into the parking lot. Neither of the two men was looking for romance, but close quarters can lead to unexpected things. As the snow melts, choices are made, a relationship is forged, and things begin to look up for both of them. It all seems so easy, at least until a character from Adam’s past appears, determined to make him see reason and return to Boston with her.’

Intelligent, absorbing, well-scribed, THE MECHANICS OF LOVE is well-titled and offers not only a fine evening’s read, but also a level of understanding about the conflicts people face dealing with their relationships and the complications therein – the challenges that alter our lives. Max writes beautifully, inserts erotica in ample amounts, and brings his story to an end that is satisfying.

City lawyer meets country mechanic; a nice MM romance. Adam’s a lawyer from Denver. He’s extremely attractive and has an ex-girlfriend that seems delusional. His family is just as crazy with trying to make Adam come back home and married the bi*ch and take a position as lawyer in her father’s firm. He has his hands full.

He was at a prison away from his home in Denver, CO, on the other side of the mountains. When he came out from meeting with his prisoner client, there was a heavy snowstorm. The prison guard mentioned to him that there were accidents all along the highway and parts of the highway closed. If he insisted going back to Denver that night, then he would be better off taking the mountain road which would by-pass the highway.

So with his fancy car he headed over the mountain to beat the snowstorm headed for Denver. As luck would have it, the roads became worst and then he hit something in the road that did damage to his undercarriage. So he creep the car the rest of the way to the small town ahead and was lucky there was a garage that he pulled into.

Franklin (Rust) owned the shop and was just closing up for the night when this black sedan pulled into his lot and not in good shape. Franklin is a gorgeous man. He never went to college due to his grandfather’s aliments, and then with his passing he left the shop to Rust.

Franklin confirms the damage and it would be at least the three days with the snowstorm to get parts to fix it. Adam has no transportation and too far away to get to the Inn, so Franklin offers him to stay at his place out back. The budding romance/relationship developed between them.

Then Adam’s estranged, deranged ex-girlfriend come to the garage making a scene to break them up. But as events unfold little did they know that she could cost them their lives. The book has a HEA ending and I really enjoyed the book.

Short story and it feels as two MC met and fall for each other for relatively short time. Despite it, it doesn’t feel unrealistic just two lonely people meeting each other in right moment. Adam has car trouble and ends up stranded in small town during the snowstorm. Luck is on his side, because handsome mechanic is willing to lend a hand and a room for the night. They start talking and found they have more in common than expected. It has nice cozy feel and there is solid backstory on characters, which makes their interaction believable.

But it’s a short story and it misses space to further develops. There are abrupt shifts in scenes which I was OK in first part of the story because that part was engaging. The second part, which introduced crazy ex and family drama, not so much. Felt like everything I liked about Franklin and Adam faded in the background.

So, I’m not thrilled but for short story it was fine

I received copy of this book in exchange for review.

You never know when love is going to find you...even when you're stuck in a snowstorm. Adam Wendover never though that he would be attracted to a man like "Rust", the mechanic who took care of his car. But once you got beyond stereotypes...Adam was the image of the corporate attorney and Franklin was the mechanic..."definitely good in a hardworn way". Franklin has Adam stay with him when the storm worsens and sparks fly. But can the sparks still fly when Adam goes home? Roscoe the cat was a cute character and Adam's family...wow, what a group. I loved this book. The characters were warm and believable and the spark between the two of them remarkable. The theme of family really runs through this story...family you keep and toxic family you don't.

This is a very quick read...get your hankies out, because you'll need them.

Reviewer 'Grady' (Grady Harp, author) wrote a piece that I cannot come close to in emulating so I am just copying his last paragraph.

Adam and a blizzard collide on the way back to Denver and he has to find a place to pull over as he damaged his car on his attempt to get home. Franklin or "Rust" helps him out and the two make a connection. Now one would think that this was it. Just another romance, but there is angst, stress, rotten family, a dangerous stalker and a cat that likes attention. An excellent story and would recommend it to anyone. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.

Ends Well

This was an interesting story with a moderately quick romance between two unlikely characters. Meeting by chance, and slowly falling in love. There’s a quick intense dramatic moment, with a well rounded outcome for everyone involved. The story ends with a promise for a HEA.

This is The Mechanic. Adam is an attorney based in Denver and Franklin has an auto shop in the Denver area. They click immediately, and there's nothing that Adam's family in Boston can do to break them up, even using a gun. Yes, they get married at the emd of the book.
