This beautifully illustrated companion to celebrated scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson's popular podcast and National Geographic Channel TV show is an eye-opening journey for anyone curious about the complexities of our universe.
For decades, beloved astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has interpreted science with a combination of brainpower and charm that resonates with fans everywhere. In 2009, he founded StarTalk, the wildly popular podcast that became an Emmy-nominated talk show on the National Geographic Channel. Tyson's pioneering, provocative book will take the greatest hits from the airwaves to the page in one smart, richly illustrated compendium. Featuring vivid photography, thought-provoking trivia, enlightening facts, and fun quotes from science and entertainment luminaries like Bill Nye and Dan Aykroyd, StarTalk reimagines science's most challenging topics--from how the brain works to the physics of comic book superheroes--in a relatable, humorous way that will delight fans and new readers alike.
Neil deGrasse Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science. Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia.
In 2001, Tyson was appointed by President Bush to serve on a twelve-member commission that studied the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry. The final report was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would promote a thriving future of transportation, space exploration, and national security.
In 2004, Tyson was once again appointed by President Bush to serve on a nine-member commission on the Implementation of the United States Space Exploration Policy, dubbed the “Moon, Mars, and Beyond” commission. This group navigated a path by which the new space vision can become a successful part of the American agenda. And in 2006, the head of NASA appointed Tyson to serve on its prestigious Advisory Council, which guides NASA through its perennial need to fit ambitious visions into restricted budgets.
In addition to dozens of professional publications, Dr. Tyson has written, and continues to write for the public. From 1995 to 2005, Tyson was a monthly essayist for Natural History magazine under the title Universe. And among Tyson’s fifteen books is his memoir The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist; and Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution, co-written with Donald Goldsmith. Origins is the companion book to the PBS NOVA four-part mini-series Origins, in which Tyson served as on-camera host. The program premiered in September 2004.
Two of Tyson’s other books are the playful and informative Death By Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries, which was a New York Times bestseller, and The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet, chronicling his experience at the center of the controversy over Pluto’s planetary status. The PBS NOVA documentary The Pluto Files, based on the book, premiered in March 2010.
In February 2012, Tyson released his tenth book, containing every thought he has ever had on the past, present, and future of space exploration: Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier.
For five seasons, beginning in the fall of 2006, Tyson appeared as the on-camera host of PBS NOVA’s spinoff program NOVA ScienceNOW, which is an accessible look at the frontier of all the science that shapes the understanding of our place in the universe.
During the summer of 2009 Tyson identified a cadre of professional standup comedians to assist his effort in bringing science to commercial radio with the NSF-funded pilot program StarTalk. Now also a popular Podcast, for three years it enjoyed a limited-run Television Series on the National Geographic Channel. StarTalk combines celebrity guests with informative yet playful banter. The target audience is all those people who never thought they would, or could, like science. In its first year on television and in three successive seasons, it was nominated for a Best Informational Programming Emmy.
Tyson is the recipient of twenty-one honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest award given by NASA to a non-government citizen. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid “13123 Tyson.” And by zoologists, with the naming of Indirani Tysoni, a native species of leaping frog in India. On the lighter side, Tyson was voted “Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive” by People Magazine in 2000.
More recently, Tyson published Astrophysics for People In A Hurry in 2017, which was a domestic and international bestseller. This adorably readable book is an introduction to all that you’ve read and heard about that’s making news in the universe—consummated, in one plac

StarTalk: Everything You Want to Know About Space Travel, Sci-Fi, the Human Race, the Universe and Beyond, by Neil deGrasse Tyson, is a simple book that offers small tidbits of information on space related topics of interest. Tyson is a famous astrophysicist and somewhat of a celebrity. He currently hosts a podcast called StarTalk, where famous celebrities, politicians, comedians and scientists mingle and discuss space. This book is a sampling of topics covered on that show.
The book discusses many issues in small detail. Space exploration and its minutia, constellations and stellar bodies, and some of the more theoretical underpinnings of the galaxy and universe are discussed, as well as topics like extraterrestrial life, science fiction and our own planet Earth. Tyson also looks at issues affecting the planet, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and so on.
This book was a quick and interesting read, but very shallow in content. Much covered I had read about previously, but there are lots of interesting bits of information in this book about space. For a layman on space and astrophysics (such as myself), this book had a lot of interesting information to offer. I enjoyed my time with it. Negatives include the lack of detail in most of the topics covered (previously mentioned), as well as the Reddit/4Chan style humour on offer - not funny to my tastes. Even so, if the above sounds interesting, or you are looking for a good book on space subjects that you can read in a sitting, or alongside your kids, then this is a good book to pick up for some quick, interesting topics on space.
Neil Degrasse Tyson, has a way with words. I have listened to his podcast, interviews and general talks. He is a very interesting man and he knows how to make things just ebb and flow. This book like all of his others had a conversationalist tone and the content was just like the podcast StarTalk. I love everything about this book and I will continue to read his books because they are always right on time.
Well suited for anyone who doesn't keep upwith current science, or just to keep around as a fun book to read a two-page spread from. It has a breezy tone, and doesn't go into subjects at length, but does take the topics seriously. I didn't think the pulled-out jokes worked very well, but the cocktails amused me.
This was a wonderfully written book about how space, human beings and sci fi factor into our everyday world. I had the honor of seeing Dr. Tyson in person at the Warner Theater here in DC. He made learning about the stars and space interesting.
I love books about science and space so I jumped at the chance to review this when Libro FM offered it- thank you for the gifted listening copy! This book wasn’t quite what I expected- I figured it was going to entirely be about space, space travel, planets etc, but it’s actually about all sorts of different science topics. For those who might think “hey, this would be great to listen to with the kids!” - this is your warning that there are a couple of chapters you’re going to want to skip! This book is actually a collection of quotes from stars/celebs that guest starred on deGrasse Tyson’s show Star Talk, and the quotes are all grouped into their respective chapter based on topic. Listening to it on audio is an exercise in attention because it is constantly bouncing from topic to topic. This is one I think I’d recommend sticking to the paper book instead.
Great pictures add to the amazing way this author explains to all about our universe. Anyone who is fascinated by space and wonders what is really out there has to grab a book by this author, someone who knows his stuff.
This was so bad in audiobook form for me. It was like a random jumble of facts that come out of nowhere for no reason and aren't tied to any other facts. There's no narrative. Maybe that's okay if it's a print book and you're picking it up as a coffee table book. But not for audio... So I listened to this while falling asleep and it worked great for that. I love nonfiction, but this wasn't it for me.
Fun little book - with a coffee table style that belies its importance
The Elon Musks of the world may give us hope, and the Sean Carrolls of the world might unlock the secrets that give humanity its meaning but –
You have to inspire the Elon Musks and the Sean Carrolls first.
I have been interested in Science-Communication field since reading Cosmos, and then realizing how many millions of world-improvers it inspired. And books like these – though they seem a bit broad, inspire.
Not all of us can be scientists, but still – a general appreciation for such things can make the world a better place.
pretty disappointed in some incredibly glaring factual inaccuracies in this book. the audiobook presentation was weird and hard to follow, would probably be better in physical book form. maybe this would be interesting to the casual space interested person, but i like his cosmic queries book better
StarTalk: Everything You Ever Need to Know About Space Travel, Sci-Fi, the human race, the Universe, and Beyond By Neil deGrasse Tyson
Review made by Aden W.
Do you ever look up to the night sky and wish to know more about space? Or maybe you would like to know more about being human? In the book StarTalk Neil deGrasse Tyson walks you through a repertoire of often intriguing facts about space, planets, sci-fi and numerous conversations between a variety of famous people collected from the podcast StarTalk.
Although all of the information from the book StarTalk is taken directly from the podcast StarTalk, the actual writing was written by astrophysicist Charles Liu. The vast range of information in StarTalk is briefly organized and doesn’t follow a clear path other than the random facts. But because of this the book covers a wide spectrum of information. The book features an array of different PhDs from people such as science educator Bill Nye, astrophysicist Dr. Charles Liu, comedian Chuck Nice and of course astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Even though what I said before about how the book has a broad nature still stands valid, the book is often pretty passionate and Charles Liu adds a touch of goofiness to lots of the writing. Neil has written a plentiful amount of other books in the Science genre like Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries, The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet. Since Charles Liu was the person behind all of the writing here are some books by Charles: The Handy Astronomy Answer Book, 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Phoenix.
Personally I thought that even though the book was almost random in terms of information being captivating to me, overall the book offers a bunch of relatively compelling information. From my perspective StarTalk will at best give you knowledge of little fun facts about Science and will grant you an joyful afternoon. The humor tends to appeal to a younger audience yet the book occasionally talks about the science behind sex. The writing and editing in StarTalk is fairly good. When you compare Neil deGrasse Tyson’s very well respected reputation StarTalk looks cheesy. Even so I will gladly read more from Neil deGrasse Tyson I imagine that StarTalk is just not my cup of tea. Anyhow I'm getting tired, I would firmly suggest the book StarTalk to others, the content was fun to read and had a cheerful tone to the writing.
StarTalk Radio is a podcast hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson, and features interviews with prominent scientists, policy makers, etc, along with a rotating panel of guest hosts who are described as comedians*. StarTalk draws on the shows, particularly the "Cosmic Queries" segments devoted to listener questions, to offer a smattering of information on both astronomy and Earth science. Each chapter is based on an episode of the show, and uses listener questions as a jumping-off point into a broader subject. It's very much a coffee table book, largely proportioned and very visually-appealing. Text-wise, it's very busy, with multiple sidebars and quotes per page surrounding a paragraph of two of the actual narrative. The section subjects run all over the place and leave the domain of science towards the end, with chapters on futuristic speculation.
* Tastes vary, but I find most of the comedians to be more inane than entertaining.
I was blown away by how engaging this was. The tension built steadily, keeping me on the edge of my seat. The twists were surprising and kept me guessing until the very end. I found myself thinking about it long after I finished. It’s the kind of story that stays with you. Highly recommended!
More like ScienceTalk rather than StarTalk. A diverse array of science subjects covered in a brief, breezy manner. Made me add StarTalk to my watchlist.
I love NDT. But meh. One, I don’t think this translated well to an audiobook. Two it’s mainly a rehash of lots of other pieces of material that were much better in source form.
Thanks to LibroFM for gifted access via their ALC program. All opinions above are my own.
