Oresama Teacher follows high school student and former delinquent Mafuyu Kurosaki. She's just transferred schools after being kicked out from her previous school for fighting. She makes a promise to her mother that she'll quit fighting and start a fresh new life at her new school. A run-in with someone she once knew from her past, proves her plan isn't going to be as easy as she initially anticipated.

Oresama Teacher was one of the first manga I ever started reading, and I remembered it being hilarious with a fantastic and super loveable cast of characters. The first chapter of this series wasn't anything special, and from a storytelling perspective this volume is pretty sloppy. So far we've only been introduced to three of the main characters, and their interactions have yet to impress me. This is also far less funny than I remember, though I imagine the humour will improve as I continue on in the series. I do still really love Mafuyu, so I'm optimistic I'll enjoy this series more as I read on.

okayyyyy..
The teacher (Takaomi) was rude, displayed predatory behaviors, abusing his role as a teacher via blackmail AND just a terrible person. He gave the main character (Kurosaki) a expired riceball. (honestly I didn't know that riceballs expired.) And he repeatedly kept getting close to Kurosakis face and making her blush (💀 which is like, ok, just why)

I think I'm just a negative Nancy because this book was written for people who have a personal interest in a tomboyish high school girl getting in a relationship with her male teacher. Terrible tbh, OH AND THEY KNEW EACH OTHER!!! when Kurosaki was in 2nd grade he was the 'boy next door' ... but he's like 7 years older than her. SHE'S MY AGE GUYS (15)
I can't imagine dating a 22 yr old male rn 💀😭

(2.5/5)⭐️🍙
(it's only .5 because I love the older generation drawing style😇)

This gender reflective Manga is unusual because it combines a serious topic with inane hilarity. The heroine is battling her own deeply ingrained habits and ideals in an attempt to conform. Conformity for a girl means pleasant, sweet, cute, etc.

Mafuyu is just not that kind of girl. She is, in the eyes of society, a guy-like delinquent. She is deeply honorable, but it is not valued because of her propensity for violence.

She is determined to change, but before she even begins at her new school, one of her teacher's sabotages her efforts. Why? I'm not entirely sure. This is one of the things that makes me want to read the next volume.

Takaomi, her teacher, harasses and supports her in equal measures. He obviously instigates or exacerbates some of her struggles.

And her new, reluctant, friend ,Hayasaka-kun, is equal parts emo bad-ass and stumbling teen boy.

I suppose I identify with Mafuyu, to some degree. She's a yanki and I'm a yankee. Despite oceans and continents between our cultures, the terms are fairly similar. Hah!

I read Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun previously to this, and this earlier story of the author's doesn't hold up anywhere near as well. Still, it's fun. I enjoy manga stories with silly, earnest and mildly stupid characters like Mafuyu and Hayasaka. They're a balm in a cynical world.

3.5 - This was pretty funny.

As I was reading, I was comparing this to Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun. The humor and the occasional panel are the same but the entire feel of the story is different.

I’m not a huge fan of teacher/student romances, this one included. I’ll suffer through it for the humor and story but I don’t know if I’ll actually root for them.

I enjoyed Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun much more than this one. This was a great starting point and I’m glad the author’s storytelling has improved (somewhat, but it’ll get better over time and with practice).

The art was odd most of the time. It was similar to the art within Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun (and the anime) but most of it was different. This had a problem with consistency although it was managed well by the end.

I feel like most of this review was comparing this to Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun but what can you do? ʅ(◞‿◟)ʃ

Τhis manga from the early 2000s is actually, really entertaining! I had read reviews of people not being able to contain their laughter while reading and the potential for that is seen from the first volume. Totally likable, hilarious characters, I would like to learn much more about!!

Reactions:
From the creator of the manga « The Magic Touch » published by Delcourt in France, here's a story about a yankee who wishes to change her image by starting anew her high school years. An interested manga to read because of the heroine with a heart: Mafuyu. I really like her!

Tsubaki Izumi offers us a funny manga with a rather complex and endearing heroine. By turns frightening, by the inhuman strength she has shown in her fights, she also remains a shy girl in front of her teacher and childhood friend Takaomi Saeki.
She has a special relationship with all male characters of the story. They have all developed some feelings for Mafuyu in the course of the action. She does not leave indifferent. By cons, as she has difficulty showing her feelings and she is not alone in this situation, there are plenty of romantic possibilities that can be developed by the author ... Although I bet on Takaomi Saeki to win the heart of the girl!

But the romance is not the theme of this manga. Rather, it is friendship.

The author attaches importance in its history to show the loneliness that evaporates if one is surrounded by friends. The importance of open up and talk to someone about his problems to help them disappear...

This manga also touches on other issues that seemed to me interesting. The first is why people feel the need to fight? Many different answers are made during the adventure. Yet this is not a manga about violence. Instead, the author discusses the importance of friendship, respect of the opponent, to help others and show understanding before launching head fell in the action.
Suddenly, the reader discover the importance of the battle for a good cause and that violence is not necessarily useful. The fighter must use his head and think ahead to succeed. Good advice for young men!

There are plenty of twists and the volumes have seen that all the characters keep secrets and that one is curious to find out. Endearing, funny, heroes are shown full of faults but always with the desire to excel and improve. A manga that moves and which covers a little "girly" does not necessarily make him justice.

In fact compared to other manga drawn by Izumi Tsubaki, the author has improved the quality of its finishing. The male characters are more successfuly drawn than Mafuyu. Although the expressions of the girl when hit, joyfol, angry or serious are well reproduced. After the author share in delusions that make us smile and make entertaining reading.

I enjoyed following the adventures of Mafuyu on the 12 volumes that I found available and I look forward to read more.

"Okay, I used to be a straight-up delinquent."

At least the idea was interesting? Mafuyu is forced to attend a new school in the hopes of changing her delinquent ways and become a normal girl. Of course, things go wrong and she stops a fight her first night there. Turns out the guy she saved is her homeroom teacher, Takaomi.

And he's such an asshole.

Mafuyu painted a romantic picture of this ass when she was little and....still does so despite how he hasn't changed. Ew. He's her teacher too. No thanks.

The mangaka said she's mainly going for comedy here, and if you've seen Gekkan Nozaki-kun, you know she does great comedy. Here....not so much. Most of the jokes just fall flat or work but never made me laugh.

Mafuyu was fine as a character when she didn't swoon over Takaomi.

The only decent guy in this series was Hayasaka and when the romance inevitably happens, I'd hope he'd be endgame. But we all know it won't be because this is shoujo. The guy that shows up first, the dark haired one, the childhood friend...Takaomi ticks all the boxes.

And for any self-respecting girl, he'd never be on their list.

I won't be continuing this series.

If you're looking for a fantastic rom-com where the heroine has to accept her flaws first and finds a respectful guy with plenty of tension and development, Skip Beat! is your read.

*I own all the manga I read/review and don't support scans.

What do you get when you gender switch the main character in a shounen manga about yankees, school and fighting? Oresama Teacher, of course.

Because that's exactly what this manga is: a story about friendship, struggle and victory, but with a female main character that kinda wish she was in a regular shoujo story and several extremely good looking allies.

Still, this is definitely not a harem manga, as it isn't a gender-bending manga, even if there's quite a bit of crossdressing going on. It's a story about what is means to be female (or male) and how society will overlook a person's obvious characteristics on its rush to fit her/him in the "proper" gender stereotype.

But what I love best about this manga is the way the manga-ka can approach this complex gender discussion and still keep things light and absolutely hilarious. Also: lot's of fighting and deep relationships. Those things always get a gold star from me.

On a final note, if you read this, do avoid thinking about Takaomi's relationship to his students. If it makes you feel better, there's a (crazy) reason for everything, and the writer slowly gets the focus away from him and into the characters, eventually hanging a lampshade on the whole weirdness.

So, read this. It's one of those series that start slow and grow beautifully as it gets it's cast, I promise.

Story and Art by Izumi Tsubaki. Published in English by Shojo Beat of Viz Media in 2011.

Demographic: Shoujo. Genre: Action, Romantic Comedy.

Series Synopsis: Mafuyu’s life of ignorant delinquency has landed her in an isolated high school: Midorigaoka Academy. Now Mafuyu must become a normal no-fights girl or be disowned by her mother. Leaving the life of a gang leader behind completely is difficult. Childhood friend Takaomi—the one who set Mafuyu on the path to today’s dilemma—is Mafuyu’s homeroom teacher! And he’s not just an old acquaintance. What will happen to the school, to Mafuyu, and to those around her?

Volume 1 Impressions: Oresama Teacher hits you on the ground rolling with laughter. Writer and illustrator Izumi Tubaki takes advantage of high school life’s frustrations by ramping up the ridiculousness level. I didn’t even realize this was a series romance series. There are a few hints that protagonist Mafuyu and her homeroom teacher Takaomi could develop into the series’ romantic couple. Any romance, however, takes back stage in this first volume to Izumi’s second serialized work. The comedic portrayal of delinquents and gangs in high school is what takes center stage. I expect to see this deliquent-world comedy continue throughout Oresama Teacher.

The protagonist–Mafuyu–is just fun to watch. She is resilient, sincere, a bit air-headed, and straightforward. She can lay down the hurt. Yet, Mafuyu has a gentle, nurturing female side. Mafuyu’s idealized fluffy high school experience contrasts against her like of dragon wallets and gangster-like chain jewelry. This mix of qualities to create a strong female character is what makes Mafuyu so appealing. How those qualities mix is what makes her interesting. Readers will also see that Mafuyu has a strong desire for true friends. People have avoided her for years because of the delinquent world she is wrapped up in. Those who did follow her were essentially her gang, and not quite the public reputation she wanted.

I could immediately tell that Oresama Teacher’s author knew the realities of school life as a teacher. Teacher Takaomi voices that the teachers were no different than the students, with cliques and bullying one another. Izumi in fact is a certified teacher at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels of education (in Japan). This may not be a major factor in Oresama Teacher’s story. However, Izumi’s experience has already translated into homeroom teacher Takaomi’s relatability to both readers and the story’s high-school cast.

My biggest compliment to volume 1 is all of the foreshadowing it laid down. There are intriguing tidbits in the actions of Mafuyu, Takaomi, and new classmate Hayasaka. Izumi has given herself a lot of opportunities for interesting character and story development. A second prop to volume one is the small number of characters introduced. They are few, but, memorable. It is easier to digest the information presented in Volume 1 than in other character-dense series.

I would recommend trying out Oresama Teacher if you are looking for a good laugh-out-loud comedy and a shoujo protagonist who is not struck with love from volume 1.

Izumi Tsubaki’s other manga works include THE MAGIC TOUCH (2003-2007) and MONTHLY GIRLS’ NOZAKI-KUN (2011-present).

Volume 1 of Oresama Teacher is thanks to the Mid-Continental Public Library system of Missouri. #publiclibraries #mcpl

I really wanted to like this since the protagonist is cute and has an interesting motivation, but the love interest is so unlikable and with there only being one side character there just isn't really enough to keep it going. Just feels a little underworked.

A comedy work of genius. its looks like 100% comedy, feels like 100% comedy but is more like 80% comedy with a super sneaky ninja 20% of really serious and sometimes heavy stuff with only the barest hints of it most of the time till it draws into each arch's climax. Plus i really enjoy when there is a really long yet really subtle build up of information or non-information leading up to important parts.

One of my favorite series. Mafuyu is so different from the typical shoujo damsel-in-distress and I adore her to bits. Her friends are also endearing. This series is so much fun to read and I kind of hope that it'll never end.

Today's manga post is on Oresama Teacher, Vol. 1 by Izumi Tsubaki. It is 192 pages long and is published by Shojo Beat. The cover has the main character, Mafuyu on it. The intended reader is someone who likes funny shojo manga. There is no foul language, no sex, and mild comedy violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the main character. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the manga- Can high school delinquent Mafuyu clean up her act and still kick some butt?!
Mafuyu is the no-nonsense, take-charge and hard-hitting leader of he high school gang. But when she gets expelled for being a delinquent, her mother, fed up with her daughter's wayward ways, sends Mafuyu to an isolated school far off in the country.
Determined to make the best of the situation and make her mother proud, Mafuyu decides to turn over a new, feminine, well-behaved leaf. But her fighting spirit can't be kept down, and the night before school starts she finds herself defending some guy who's getting beaten up. One slip wouldn't have been a problem, except the guy is…her teacher?! How can Mafuyu learn to be a good girl if her teacher won't let her forget her wicked past?

Review- This is a pretty funny manga about a girl with a strong sense of justice who has a reputation as a bad girl. Her mother sends to a private school to try and get her away from her old 'gang'. But instead she finds the old friend who give her the reputation instead as a teacher. So she is trying to make friends but still wants to stand up to bullies. So she has to make some choices in coming volumes and I think that it will be funny to see what she is going to do next.

I give this volume a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

Every once in a while I see glimpses of the mangaka that wrote the amazing series of "Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun". The art is far from the same, but the girl, Mafuyu, looks sometimes similar to Sakura. The comedy is not the same ("Nozaki-kun" is much, much funnier) but all the misunderstandings are just soo Nozaki-kun. There is one yankee boy (a punk) that is supposed to be scary but he is a bit afraid of Mafuyu. She thinks he is her friend, he thinks she wants to bit him up. More or less the same premise as Nozaki-kun, with hilarious results (ok, not so hilarious but I think it is going to be).

I get serious nostalgia reading this series now, because it is probably one of the first shoujo series I ever read when I was first getting into manga. Izumi Tsubaki is currently better known for Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, which is pretty much pure comedy, where as this series is about a former delinquent teenage girl, and the hijinks she gets up to at her new school as she tries to be normal. However, thanks to the zany personalities of the people around her, her meddlesome teacher/childhood friend, and her own inability to stay out of trouble, normalcy does not seems attainable for Mafuyu and hilarity often ensues.

I like the concept of a former delinquent desperately trying to reform her image at a last chance school, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The main character's personality doesn't really make sense- she was functionally the leader of a gang of delinquents, but she's also wildly naive. The apparent love interest is both an asshole and her teacher, and the probable rival is unappealing and frankly kind of dim. I get that this is supposed to be a humor manga, but I found this way more annoying than funny.

Vediamo come proseguirà.

I read this book a long time ago and I plan to start from the begin of the series and reread it. I enjoyed all of the gender bender moments. I always found it really entertaining to watch how the main character wants to act just like a normal school girl, but she always tends to get involved in situations that cause her to act more like her old delinquent self. I always find myself laughing at all of the situations that she ends up having to face.

Man, I had a tough time following the artwork! Mafuyu is a likeable character but a bit too hyper to track at times. And I don't claim to understand Japanese culture, but I was incredibly uncomfortable with Takaomi's complete disregard for his responsibility as a teacher to maintain safe and appropriate boundaries with a student. Plus, he was really REALLY unlikeable. So, good luck to them all but I'm getting off here.

Okay.. this definitely different from other shojo series I’ve read but definitely on par for this mangaka LOL. She always makes hilarious comedies (like Monthly Girls Nozaki Kun) so I really wanted to try this series.
So far, Mafuyu is an interesting girl. And Takaomi is mysterious… I do wish he wasn’t her teacher though? Or maybe he’s not a love interest? I do like Hayasaka. He’s funny in his own way.. Especially at the end, him blushing for “Super Bun” lol..
