One year after Kaiser Noire's rebirth, he has risen to knighthood. Trained by the legendary Seeath Reinhart, Kaiser is sent to quell a rebellious group of deserters in the South forest. His achievements soon put him on a path to discover more about his race and his fate becomes entangled with a kindred spirit.
When a young girl named Tessa is saved by a disgraced knight turned mercenary, she forces him to confront the sins of his past. In keeping a promise to the girl, he finds information that could lead him to his lost ward and discover an enemy other than the Glas.
While the fates of the realm slowly close in on each other, secrets across the sea begin to stir and shine light on what happened to the Glas four hundred years ago.
Will the uncovered truths help defeat the Glas of present day or awaken something worse?
I had the privilege of getting an advanced copy, being a fan of his first book in the Kingdom of Glas series, and in SHATTERED Vider continues his wonderfully crafted world and compelling characters spanning several cultures. In this book, his writing flows, the characters are compelling as all get out, and the world-wide mystery really ramps up.
I really felt for so many of the characters, and LOVE the arcs that are present. I was left really needing the next book (the cliffhanger is OH CRAP, so be aware of that). The answers (and more questions) we get are fascinating, the world is complex and interesting, and the mythology is neat and creepy in the best way. I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens next.
If you're a fan of epic fantasy with complex politics (Kingdom of Glas reminds me a lot of Game of Thrones without all the rape and misogyny), you'll like this series.
I would have to agree with the other reviewer. I don't usually like book twos, but this has great action. It picks up a year after the ending of the other book left off. Grant is still on his quest to redeem himself and his crew. Kaiser, with his unique magic, is learning revenge can be interrupted by love, but an old woman vividly reminds him of who he is. The glas brothers seem invincible, but the queen has a new mad wolf to hunt down her prey. Can Grant save everyone before the wolf consumes everything he's worked to save? I really enjoyed the twists and turns - and unexpected defeats of this book. :-) I am definitely looking forward to book III
Sometimes the second book in a series just doesn't impress like the first. This isn't the case with Kingdom of Glas. Vider draw us into the world of the six kingdoms and keeps building on the solid foundation he laid out in Rebirth. In Shattered, we see even more character development and budding conflict, particularly with complex characters like Kaiser Noire who learns to value love as much as revenge. Readers (along with our favorite heroes) discover a deep secret hidden within the realm -- one with dire consequences for the future. I can't wait for the third book of this series!
I honestly wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. Just like the first book, the second book is so captivating. Definitely a change in pace in the second book. I love that we get to see different sides to the characters that we met in the first book. And the introductions to the new characters we come to know in the second book. The ending is one hell of a twist that will keep you on the end of your seat till you finish the last page. I'm so eager to read the third book and can't wait till its available. I highly recommend reading this series. This book is well written and the attention to detail will make you feel as if you're in the book.
