With only six students remaining alive out of the original 15, the final trial will also reveal the mastermind behind their imprisonment in Hope's Peak Academy...and the true purpose behind the deadly game they've been forced to play! The survivors might count themselves lucky to have been right...but are they sure they've counted "themselves" right...? The latest "Danganronpa" videogame was released in 2016 through NIS America! Based on the "Danganronpa" anime TV show, released in 2015 through Funimation. A quirky, fun, weird, dynamic take on the high school Battle Royale genre.
I do maintain that this series is probably... the worst out of the DR manga series, but... the ending of the original DR REMAINS super fucked up and fun. I mean, it is near-impossible to see coming from the beginning, and reading through it reminds me of being 14 again.
LEEANLO.
Wowowowowowowowowowowowowowow! There has to be another book, My brain is literally 🤯 right now! Whywhywhywhywhywhywhywhywhy!?!?!? The twist like ooooooooooh my gooooooood!
Danganronpa - The Animation is a book in many volumes that is mainly about trust. In this story, Naegi is a boy who gets accepted into the honorable high school named Hope’s Peak High School. In this school, the students quickly realize that Hope’s Peak High isn’t a normal school and know that in order to survive, they must trust their peers, and most of all, they must trust themselves. The rest of the book is about surviving this nearly impossible ordeal. I enjoyed Danganronpa for many reasons. One thing mainly that I liked about this novel was that it was based mostly around court and law. These judging scenes were really interesting, and really kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Another thing that I found interesting was the fact that the whole book was very video game-ish. It seemed like the players were playing a video games, which was why there was multiple concepts like verbal bullets, which were awarded to the students if one student proved another students’ point wrong by using clear evidence. I rated Danganronpa a ⅗. The reason that I rated Danganronpa this way was because of the fact that it was very unique. I originally at first thought that it might have been a ripoff of The Hunger Games, but I soon realized that that was not true, as Danganronpa was unique in its own way. The reason that it didn't get higher was because of the fact that the end was just not good. I expected more, and at the end I thought we would have some more interesting scenes, but it strolled off from the main topic so much that I often had to go back a few pages and check what they were talking about. All in all, I think that Danganronpa-The Animation was a good book, but it could have done better during key moments like the end.
The first Danganronpa series ends here. I doubt I have anything left to say--as with the prior volumes, the manga is but a brief skimming of what the original visual novel does so well. It's a speedy overview of the story--and with the gameplay such a huge element of the VN (impossible to replicate in a static medium) the manga feels like half a story.
As a nostalgic way to reexperience the story in a faster way (and without being chained to a PS4), this is pretty fine. We still get to hang out with our beloved characters. And for those of us who DID play through the VN, we get lingering echoes of that adrenaline rush of Ace Attorneying our way through those last few trials--and the despair as the gameplay becomes more and more frenetic; that wondering of whether we can actually figure out the right clues, match them with incorrect statements, and find success during some of those harder minigames.
I would have loved to see the Danganronpa manga attempt a looser adaptation, to create an experience that skewed further from the source material--something that would have embraced the non-interactive medium. As far as I know, all of the manga series are simply retreads of the VNs, but maybe one day we can get the manga series we desire.
This is a review about the whole Danganronpa manga series.
I’m seeing a lot of people complaining about the series being rushed, but that’s actually something I liked about it. I’m a person who loves a quick read and doesn’t want to spend a lot of time and money on a long series which will bore me at the end from it taking too long to get to the point. I rarely ever give five star reviews, but in my opinion this really deserved the five stars. It had so many good plot twists and whenever I thought I found a scheme it got put on it’s head again. I read all four volumes in around 7 hours, the series was just simply so good I couldn’t stop. The cliffhanger at the end was really what threw me off completely and made me want more, this is also what makes this series so darn good. But I guess a thing that would’ve been nice would be if Naegi wouldn’t have gotten saved that easily towards the end. Him trying to survive (or even perhaps actually dying) could’ve added some more action, but the way things took place was alright.
I recommend this book to mystery book lovers that maybe also, like me, love a quick read.

recently finished the game so i decided it was only right to finish the manga alongside it
cant lie, the ending will always make me a bit teary eyed :') it's so bittersweet yet hopeful.
i know danganronpa gets its fair share of judgment (and with good reason) but i've always loved the overall message of optimism and hope it carries. it speaks volumes of the indomitable human spirit—how we can persevere despite the odds, move forward in the face of adversity, and so on.
makoto naegi's character is basically mascot for this. even though naegi's optimistic attitude and hopefulness are seen as naive, it never deters him. even when all of his friends betrayed him, he still held hope and forgave them. even when facing the ultimate despair, he still held hope and inspired hope in those around him.
i know danganronpa gets a lot of bad rep, and i get why, but i think it's genuinely worth giving it a shot. be it the game, watching a gameplay or the anime, reading the manga, or whatever, it's definitely still worth it.
This final book is a rush from start to finish and I couldn't put it down. We see explanations/answers for about the last half--if not more--of the book, but we are left with an ambiguous ending. I'm not sure if it's meant to be interpretive or if I missed something, but it leaves a lot up to the reader. Considering how powerful the final book was, with the discussions of Hope vs Despair and the cinematic illustrations, I just was expecting more of a big finish.
For: readers looking for an exciting, compelling series with a strong cast of characters and lots of suspense.
Possible red flags: gore, blood, murder, violence, characters in peril, mentions of suicide; manipulation and holding people against their will; Dissociative Personality Disorder; mentions of sex and sexual situations, though not graphically shown or discussed; death of family members; being haunted by the past; missing memories/losing time.
I really enjoyed this series, though I'd say the game gives a lot more info in regards to collecting information and how the characters went about it. That is probably the one thing that bothered me about how the story was presented in the manga. The investigation times were so short and you didn't really know how all the information was found. Instead it was just laid out for you during the trial.
Also, you don't really get to know the characters as well in the manga as opposed to the game. That may not bother you but since my first introduction to this story was with the game, I think that definitely has an impact on my second interaction with the story. That being said, this was still an enjoyable read through and I would definitely recommend it especially if you have not been introduced to this story through the game or anime.
The fourth and final volume again manages to perfectly encapsulate the Danganronpa art style and the character dynamics. I especially loved the use of different fonts to match the mastermind's personalities.
I think this volume does fall slightly short of the other three since, because it isn't about investigating the murderers, the scene changes very quickly from page to page and I sometimes had to double check I hadn't accidentally skipped any. There are some frames as well which are a bit too chaotic with the speech bubbles and it is hard to tell who is talking.
The final book in this series. I really enjoyed this and I had never heard of the game before. Everything played out and we were told who the bad guy was in the end but I would never have guessed it. Admittedly it did get a bit far-fetched but what manga doesn't. We are left with an uneasy ending too, so there might be a sequel. But regardless, there are a lot of Danganronpa series that haven't been translated into English yet and I really, really want more!
It kinda makes sense in the game that Naegi is led by the others to be the one to solve the mysteries because it's a game where Naegi is the protagonist.
But in a manga it just looks like the others are assholes who clearly knew what was happening and decided they didn't want to be the ones to actually bring it up but let Naegi fumble along to hopefully the correct answer so that they pass the class trial ¯\_ಠ_ಠ_/¯
"If Kirigiri did it... and gets executed? That would be the end of her investigation... Those of us still remaining might spenmd the rest of our lives in here..." (insert bad ending and Aoi with three kids) "Maybe the murders would come to an end... abd we'd live in peace within these school walls... Is that where our hope lies?" WHY do you have to add this to the manga I'm practically screaming. Ewww
Well, the story was good almost all the way, but the ending was so lame that it spoiled a good mystery (syrup everywhere).
One feature of this series that I found to be extremely useful was a 6-page stretch of volume 1 where all the major characters were introduced. I stuck a bookmark there and consulted it any time a name didn't resonate with me; Japanese names are not my long suit.
At this point, I find that the story has gone off the deep end. It also feels rather rushed compared to the other volumes. That being said, there are a lot of twists that keep you on your toes
