In Her Shoes is a celebration of life. Yes, it is a cancer journey, but it is also a tribute to courage, tenacity and to the team of so many who come alongside the one with cancer, even if just to celebrate with scarves!
With riveting, engaging, real talk, Joanie Shawhan shares the account of her walk with ovarian cancer, and will wrap you in the wonder of illness and of our God who is bigger than any diagnosis. She uses her experiences to encourage others and to train medical students in the Survivors Teaching Students program.
I’ve walked through chemo with three friends, yet found I had no clue as to what they really experienced. Joanie shares the reality of prognosis and the emotional rollercoaster of treatment. Included are the stories of other women, facing Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, ovarian and breast cancer, Leukemia and one with a brain tumor. Their stories are heart-wrenching, yet heart-warming, in their struggle for survival.
A registered nurse, Joanie also includes helpful hints for prevention of blood clots, care of the bald head, dealing with chemo day, fatigue, hair loss, wigs, managing constipation, diarrhea, mouth sores, nausea and nutrition. Her attention to the care of the whole person is even evident in the “12 Steps to Spiritual Wellness.”
I found in Joanie a sister with a heart for missions and the gift of encouragement. She adds verses that perfectly illustrate God’s faithfulness and prayers that voice heartfelt cries. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone going through cancer or caring for a loved one in the middle of their storm. Whether coping with brain fog or going through clinical trials, there’s reassurance in knowing you’re not alone!

Joanie Shawhan reveals the struggles, heartaches, and hopes of a variety of women who have fought and won the battle against cancer. Because she is one of the survivors, she shares a firsthand account of how she dealt with the process from diagnosis to treatment and back to wholeness. Her story and the stories of the other women in her book are authentic and heart-touching. The book offers candid advice about dealing with treatments and their side effects, but more than that, it offers simple scripture passages that speak directly to the fear, the pain, the desperation, and the joy that each patient shares about her own journey through the valley of the shadow of cancer. Each chapter is brief and ends with a short prayer that encapsulates exactly what a patient would need at that moment. I would highly recommend this book for anyone you know who has cancer as well as for the loved ones supporting them through the process. The insight and encouragement are sure to meet their most basic needs at just the moment they need it.

In Her Shoes, Dancing in the Shadow of Cancer by Joanie Shawhan is an honest and revealing look at what it’s like on the cancer journey.

Joanie tells not only her story of ovarian cancer, but also the stories of eleven women who have traversed the stony path of cancers such as non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, breast cancer, leukemia, brain tumors, and others with ovarian cancer.

It can be a raw, heart-breaking read, but it’s layered with faith-filled encouragement, helpful hints on dealing with various aspects of cancer’s side effects, and even humor.

If you know someone who’s going through cancer, read this to find out how you can help. And, if not, read it anyway. With the rising numbers of cancer diagnoses, you may know someone in the future. If you are the one on this path, Joanie’s stories show that you are not alone.

In Her Shoes is sure to provide comfort and support for women battling cancer. The author has experience as an oncology nurse and ovarian cancer patient. In her book, she shares stories of her personal challenges with cancer as well as the stories of other cancer survivors.

Everyday women facing cancer, and their friends and family, will find encouragement and hope as they read the stories of women who have coped and prevailed. I especially appreciated the practical tips for friends and family, the scriptures and prayers, and the interspersed hints of humor. It’s evident the author is eager to come alongside those facing the challenge of a cancer diagnosis in order to share kind counsel and hope.
