Q Hayashida (林田球, Hayashida Kyu) is a manga author from Tokyo. Hayashida studied oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. She has discussed her childhood and artistic inspirations in interviews but maintains a high level of privacy about her personal life, to the point that her true name and face are unknown. Hayashida's first major manga was Maken X Another (1999-2001), a comic book adaptation of a video game. Her most famous work is the 23-volumes long Dorohedoro (2000-2018). It was originally serialised in the alternative manga magazine 'Monthly Ikki', but it was later moved to 'Hibana' when Ikki ceased publication, and finally transferred to 'Monthly Shōnen Sunday'. Dorohedoro has been partially adapted into an anime on Netflix in 2018. Hayashida's most recent manga series Dai Dark began serialisation in 2019 in the pages of Monthly Shōnen Sunday.
Loved the lecture "The afterlife made easy to understand" at the end of this volume. "Now you'll being your tour of the trials of Hell. You will suffer tens of thousand of them. Be ready for that, everyone!"
wow okay it was a lot to take in. I loved the gore and the violence, Q. Hayashida is doing an excellent job as always. My biggest grip for a couple of volumes has been that various threads are slowly moving together but too slowly for my liking.
also in this volume Shin?!?!?!?!!? Asu?!?!?!?!? Noi!!!!!!!!! Nikaido!!!!!!!! Fujita,,, Risu's curse design is excellent.
also hot take: devils in drhdr are like mechas right???
What. The. Hell?! I have never felt so excited to be so confused. As soon as the Central Department Store sinks into the cesspool it was built above, the rules change. Strong characters get brought low, the powerless rise up in a horrifying fashion, and there are growing insinuations that there's a power at work here that's far larger and more insidious than anything we've seen before. Dorohedoro's swift tonal shift into outright horror is staggeringly effective. I really like most of the characters we've gotten to know in this series, and in the span of just a few volumes, suddenly everyone is in danger. Or worse. I am both eager and afraid to read what happens next, because I really don't know who's going to survive this.
Long gone is the humor in the first volumes, now the gore manages to intensify somehow with each volume.
I'm too invested in everyone, and I honestly have no idea who will be the last ones standing, but the role Hole plays in these last volumes is very intriguing and surprising. Surprising and shocking are keywords for this volume.
Ohhhhhhhh shiiiiiiiiiiitttttt. A new kind of threat, a particularly nasty take on puppet-zombies. And Shin! SHIN! And Noi! How will their relationship survive this?! I liked the little guide to the afterlife, as well as the sudden twist ending. Only five more volumes to go...
( I am currently re-reading the series, my review will be edited later! I enjoyed all of the volumes though! :D)
All of my Dorohedoro reviews are actually a summary of what I've read & some thoughts! I have the memory of a goldfish.
[RE-READ] SEPTEMBER 2021 TW: Strong language, blood & gore, graphic violence, body horror, substance (drugs : black powder), decapitated head & body parts, non-consensual neurosurgery & nudity Rating: 5 stars
ONE OF MY FAVOURITE VOLUMES. SO INTENSE AND HEART-WRENCHING. BRILLIANTLY EXECUTED.
Summarising with bullet points from now onwards so I can get through my re-reads faster
Spell 110: Revival Bluff - The volume started off with Sho's skull fracturing during the fall. His devil's tumour (sorcerers lifeforce) is no longer intact and in a fetal position - His magic on Fujita vanishes causing panic and confusion in the elevator. Before Tetsujo was able to harm Fujita, he quickly remedies the situation by making a deal with Tetsujo. He revealed that he's a member of the En family and promises him that his friends will be resurrected - What's left of the En's family gathered around Sho's badly injured body. Chota and Turkey are now awake. Their injuries were probably healed by Noi. They plan to search for Judas's Ear to revive Sho. Unfortunately, En's body, Ebisu and Judas's Ear are nowhere to be found - Shin remembered what Prof Kasukabe told him about the size of the building being a mirage and questions where they are (since they're stuck somewhere big and vast) - Ebisu survived the fall but one of the horns on her mask broke off. One of her arms is broken too. She searches for Judas's Ear. Fortunately, he survived the fall too (can the dog die though? I mean, he can revive himself, right? hahaha) - She found Noi's smoke given by Sho inside of her backpack and healed her injuries. En's body broke her fall but she used Noi's smoke to turn the body back to normal. She tries carrying En's body but it was too heavy. She finds Dokuga inside a plastic bag. She initially wanted to leave him alone but Dokuga must've hit his head and got amnesia. She proceeded to take advantage of the situation - She convinces Dokuga that he is Kaiko, her servant. She used Noi's smoke to heal his body but avoided the head in case he'll get his memories back - Dokuga's personality changed drastically after losing his memories. He was overjoyed to be saved by Ebisu. Ebisu asks him to carry the body bag. He happily obliged
Spell 111: Castle On The Lake - We see monks arriving at the central department store for the funeral service but the entrance has been closed. It was sealed by a black wall. All of the sudden, the building starts sinking - Back at the hospital, Dr Vaux finally shares his findings with Prof Kasukabe regarding Caiman's head. It happened during the previous Living Dead Day (in volume 2) when Nikaido escaped with Caiman from En's cleaners by conjuring a portal door. They were found by Vaux. Caiman's head was decapitated and he sees smoke coming out of Nikaido's fingers, deducing that she's a sorcerer - He doesn't care about her being a sorcerer but he just wants everyone to know how sharp his eyes are (lol, flexing I see!) - Thirteen revealed to the group that Nikaido is turning into a devil & can only use her magic four more times (a piece of information he didn't share with the sorcerers). While Prof seems interested and unfazed about the update, Dr Vaux is quick to judge (lol) - Dr Vaux told the group that Nikaido had told him that Caiman isn't dead and that his head will grow back. Prof saw the head at Shin's room (it was taken when En killed Caiman at Berith's Hot Springs). It's the same head as the one that disappeared during the autopsy so Vaux is confused as to how it ended up at Shin's - At first, Dr Vaux couldn't believe what Nikaido said. However, when he took both of them back to the hospital, he set up a camera pointing at Caiman's head. He sets the timer to shoot every 5 minutes. He left the room to treat Nikaido. He had forgotten about the camera until recently. He shares Caiman's x-ray with the rest of the team. It's taken before the head was cut off by Shin. At first, he thought it was just a stain but there's something around his neck. It looks like a lot of tiny skulls. The camera that he set up managed to capture Caiman regrowing his head. He deduces that this is not because of magic. It's because he has multiple heads (it reminded Prof Kasukabe of Ai) - It looks like there are 9 heads but two of them looks dead (no skull, just vertebrae). Thirteen asks Vaux if he will die if all his heads are cut off (lol, he still wants Nikaido to himself, I see) - The staff of the En's family revealed to the gang that they saw on TV about the disappearance of The Central Department store. One of them concludes that it could be the works of Sho's magic. Prof Kasukabe decided to head out and check it with Johnson - Prof Kasukabe thinks about the operation he performed on Ai on the way to the store. He remembered that Ai had requested eight sorcerers' bodies for the surgery. He works out that everything is connected (the sludge that covered Ai when he fell on the dumping lake, the one he smelled at Haru's house back in Hydra Forest, the black liquid Ai vomited at En's mansion, the rain in Hole and the sorcerer's world). He also remembered Ai telling him that ' It felt like I was turning into the Hole myself.' - When he arrived, the store is no longer there and we see the dumping lake exposed once again
Spell 112 : Deep House LET ME JUST SAY HOW DARE YOU TEASE US WITH THIS HOT CHAPTER COVER, HAYASHIDA SENSEI. IS SHINOI CANON OR NOT :(
-Due to the wind, Prof is separated from Johnson. Johnson's caught up in power lines. He landed on the black house. He went inside the house and finds Haru (she called him HONEYYYYY ASDFGHJKL) - The house connects to hell. She hid Kasukabe in her devil body to avoid detection from other devils. Not Duston asking if she gained weight - The house, where all devils gathered submerges in the dumping lake - Haru mentions to Prof Kasukabe that the devils are heading to the Central Department Store to meet the Cross-Eyes boss. Prof asks what the devils want from Ai. She simply said that they're interested in something deep inside of him - Nikaido, Kawajiri and Risu is stuck in the blackout. Nikaido's eyes turned devil and she uses it as a flashlight - Risu forms into Curse after sensing a desire to kill. The three wanders the store to find an exit. No humans are insight - En's family is still perplexed by the magic of the central department store. Anxious, Noi sets off to find Judas's Ear. Shin runs after her, leaving Chota and Turkey behind. They plan to make a Judas's Ear doll - Shin manipulated Noi to put the tiny smoke flasks inside of her head. As per volume 17, if you can get the devil tumour to hug the flasks, you can survive anything (a higher chance of defeating the boss). He sees a dark figure appearing
Spell 113: Blind Labyrinth - Noi is healed from the unconventional neurosurgery and finds Shin missing. She finds his clothes with bloodstains on the ground and calls out to him - Ebisu and Kaiko (Dokuga) attempts to escape from the tunnel with Dokuga carrying En's body inside of a body bag (she made sure that he doesn't see En's body because he might get his memories back. Ebisu is smart!) - Tetsujo took on Fujita's deal of resurrecting his friends. Fujita shares about what happened to Dokuga. They discuss what the boss meant by 'sacrifice'. Tetsujo deduced that all of the devil tumours could actually be sorcerers' souls and the boss wanted to exchange them for something - Tetsujo did his research on Fujita. He knows that he's one of the low-ranks and that Sho's magic made him invisible. He remains sceptical about Fujita's promise to resurrect his friends (as he should). Both of them are actually wary of one another and are just simply taking advantage of the situation - Kawajiri attempts to use his magic (transportation) but it seems to be stopped by something or someone. It affected his second sight and it injured his eyes, turning him blind - The only thing that doesn't make this part of the story that bad is Nikaido's personality change T_T Don't worry, Kawajiri!!! You'll be healed, surely? - Nikaido shares that she saw something in the darkness. All of the humans have been wiped out (floated and disappeared) - Kawajiri then attempts to conjure a door but a mysterious individual (with his eyes scraped off) cuts his hand. Kawajiri screams in agony :(
Spell 114 : The Wired Dead - Prof Kasukabe remains curious about the devils and their activities. Although Haru keeps mentioning that everything is classified, she keeps sharing little things with Prof. The dumping lake isn't just any old puddle of water. It takes its power from the dirt. It thinks. It acts to achieve its goals. So what you're saying is that the lake is alive and has an inhabitant? OMG - Prof remembers Ai mentioning that there's something deep inside of him and Haru spill the beans that that's exactly what the devils are interested to see. We also learn that the house is a living being. They're actually inside the house's true form. Haru told Prof she will sneak him out but Prof Kasukabe is still satisfying his curiosities - Kawajiri becomes weak and scared upon losing his sight and hand. Nikaido proceeds to fight with the human. The human seems to be controlled via a suction hose/tube of some sort. The tub keeps the human alive despite being cut into pieces. More bodies are seen connected to the tubes. These 'zombies' attempts to attack the trio - Risu uses his Curse magic as per Nikaido's request (it's refreshing that he finally gets to shine after being deemed useless by Kawajiri before he got badly injured hahaha). Kawajiri (still with devil's sense of thought) sulks in Nikaido's arms not wanting to be useless - Risu managed to defeat all of them but it seems that more humans connected to the tubes are coming - Dokuga and Ebisu found an exit but it was filled with bodies with tubes on them. Meanwhile, Tetsujo realises that Fujita is holding onto something in his pocket. Something that he's trying to protect (En's devil tumour). Tetsujo quickly grabbed it (without knowing what it is) and Fujita became concerned and anxious
Spell 115: Cracking Tube - We see Shin's dad explaining to him that the dumping lake is used to bury sorcerers. His mother was killed by the Neighbourhood Patrol (NP) and tossed her right in (poor Shin) - Shin woke up to find that he's attached to the tube. As he wanders the room, he sees several monster 'suits' that are alive. He calls out for Noi and attempts to free himself from the tube but to no avail. Apparently, something is flowing out of him into the tube and it makes him sick. - Magic, heavy force doesn't work on the tube. He checks to see what the tube is hooked up to. He opens a door and finds his dad (just like when he was younger, tied to a chair & badly injured) - We see Shin waking up in a room with a pile of human bodies. He sees a cocoon or moulted skin stuck to the ceiling. The bodies all line-up, as if being controlled and are seen heading towards an unknown location. Shin calls out to them and notices that they have tubes attached to their bodies like him. He sees that mysterious dark figure again. Is it ' THE HOLE'? The tube moves throughout his entire body. It seems that it's being controlled by The Hole. We see blood coming out of his body (eyes, mouth, ears, his sewed arms ) - Meanwhile, Noi is still trying to locate Shin. She founds his mask on the ground - We see that the tube 'process' is completed and it triggered Shin's violent streak. He smiles and seems to be anticipating violence
Spell 116 : Smash 'N' Grab WE HAVE SEEN SHIN BEING VIOLENT BUT THIS CHAPTER'S COVER PAGE IS THE CREEPIEST AND MOST DISTURBING THAT I'VE SEEN OF HIM OMG
- Fujita tries to fight Tetsujo to get En's tumour back. Tetsujo realises that it's En's and he is opposed to him being resurrected. Fujita threatens to let Tetsujo friends die if he destroys the tumour. Tetsujo is happy now that he has leverage to make sure Fujita will resurrect his friends - We see Shin heading towards them. Tetsujo realises that he doesn't have a chance of winning the fight so he gave up and gives back the tumour to Fujita. Fujita is delighted to be reunited with the member of the family again. Unfortunately, Shin is completely different now. We see Shin cutting him up into pieces. Tetsujo is shocked at the sight of it - Chota and Turkey are together with Sho's corpse. We see Shin entering the room. He proceeds to injure them both too - Noi went back to the room to find Chota and Turkey gone. Sho's body disappeared too. Noi put her mask back on and prepares for the worst - Dokuga helped clear the bodies to escape the tunnel. The bodies started becoming alive and they ran for it - We see tubes coming from above attempting to attach themselves to Nikaido, Kawajiri and Risu. While Nikaido quickly frees herself from it, Risu and Kawajiri are taken away. Kawajiri gave Nikaido her mask and asks her to save herself. She attempts to help him but was stopped by the franken-humans. She promises to come back for him (OMG THIS VOLUME IS SO INTENSE. SO MANY THINGS HAPPENING TO ALL OF THE CHARACTERS. GIVE ME SOME TIME TO BREATHE, MAN)
Spell 117 : Decentralized Department Store - The tubes can't seem to be defeated with brute force nor magic. Nikaido follows the tube and hopes for her friends to still be alive (normal Nikaido would freak and opt for revenge in a matter of seconds. Cuckoo devil Nikaido is calmer and plans to follow the tube to find its source *this personality change eases the tension for the readers so I'm grateful to the mangaka* - Noi finds decapitated body parts on the ground and starts collecting them. She quickly realises that it's Shin's magic (though Shin's cut is cleaner). One of the hands that she finds is Chota's and she recognises it. She plans to heal the body parts but couldn't find the heads. She followed the trail of body parts to find Fujita's feet with his funeral shoes. Noi is delighted that Fujita is still alive. - Noi is happy to find Shin. The two fights. Noi tries stopping Shin's smoke by breaking his arms off. He uses his hammer to strike Noi's head - Noi's devilisation caused her to shop all of the sudden. She tries to find suitable clothes. She wears Aikawa's jacket in hopes to return it. She ponders about Caiman. She saw a devil's tail and attempted to follow it. We see Caiman's mask on the floor. THE LONG-AWAITED REUNION OF CAIMAN AND NIKAIDO IS FINALLY HERE! He greets her with a smile ASDFGHJKL (this caiman seems to be the one with his spikes taken out) IM DEAD EVENTHOUGH THIS IS MY SECOND TIME READING IT, it's STILL ONE OF THE BEST ENDING CHAPTER AFTER ALL THAT BLOODSHED AND SH*T HAPPENING TO EVERYONE ELSE AAAA
The bonus chapter is on the afterlife, using En as an example lol ( we see En fighting with the dead cross-eyes hahaha because grudges still exist in Hell, apparently). The devils love tormenting sorcerers, huh?

This volumes continues with the same level of bizarre plot points, warped and gory artwork, and oddly humorous asides that the series is based on. The events in this book seem to be pointing to an upcoming ending. I still find it occasionally difficult to tell what is actually going on, but for the most part I can just be swept along by the story.
I really loved this volume of Dorohedoro. In essence, it continues the story of what happens to En's family; the remaining Cross-Eyes; and Nikaido, Asu and Risu in the Central Department Store. We also get to see a bit more about what the devils are up to and Kasukabe makes a crucial connection that has thus far evaded him. Again, the extra evil is very amusing.
The only thing that bothers me is Haru. I don't understand why she can climb in and out of her devil form, but ripping Asu out of his was so traumatic. Nor do I understand why Nikaido is effectively in the same form she was pre-devil, but with a little tail and horns. Is this some sort of power unique to Haru?
is it actually kaiman? we will see i guess but im not sure how it could be... its dorohedoro tho, anything is possible. so excited to learn about the thing deep inside of ai, the dark essence of hole? we shall see... also excited to see what the devils are up to,,, still waiting on the haru chekhovs gun situation, although im sure that will come at the end toward the climax. also zombie shin is so scary omg
3.5/5 I had to refer back to the last volume to make sense of the first page. This one moves at a fast clip. Kasukabe’s adventure with Haru was the best part - not just because I love to see them together, but because we are getting closer to the core of what’s going on with Ai/Aikawa/Caiman (Hole Jesus??). Memory-Loss-Dokuga and Ebisu make a fun pair. We also got THE Shin and Noi illustration, before the black goo set them against each other. Ends on an exciting cliffhanger.

CAN ASU CATCH A DAMN BREAK!? He’s been through enough. Then there’s Shin? What’s wrong with him!? He better not hurt my Noi, that’s all I know. Also Caiman? I miss him, but idk if he’s really back or Nikaido was hallucinating. I love Ebisu and Kikurage together.
