Have you ever been to a rain forest? Many plants and animals live in the rain forest where it is warm; it is a good place for growing things.

Come; see the Amazon River flowing through the largest rain forest on Earth.

In this captivating book, the author [who, when he was four years old, sat on the tail of an alligator] brings the rain forest to life for the young reader. Charming, colorful pictures accompany the text; upper elementary grade readers will enjoy discovering the plants and animals that make their homes here. While exploring the ecology of the rain forest, readers will learn about old-growth forests, the forest floor, the understory, and the forest’s canopy. Young readers interested in plants and animals will enjoy learning how each species fits into the rain forest’s ecosystem.

Also included is a listing with contact information of Rain Forest organizations.

Highly recommended.

A wonderful book about the science and ecology of rainforests. It touches on all aspects of the rainforest that we teach for biomes in middle school. The temperature, rainfall, adaptations of plants to compete for sunlight and soil nutrients, adaptations of animals to camouflage themselves or find food, results of clear-cutting on water quality and climate change, etc. Each page has a different focus and shows native creatures in their environments. The illustrations are nice and detailed and there are lots of things to see on each page. I'm definitely adding this one to my classroom library.

The illustrations did not wow me, but this is a nice overview of many of the plants and animals of the rain forest (focusing primarily on tropical rain forests, but temperate forests are mentioned as well). The book also details some of the benefits we receive from rain forests as well as the importance of protecting these old growth forests.
