When twenty-something Lia’s grandmother dies, her life is knocked upside-down. In order to satisfy the terms of her inheritance, Lia is forced to move to the family’s apartment complex in the scenic mountain town of Applebarrow, leaving behind her dead-end job and long-term boyfriend, Jason. While she’s happy to fulfill her Granana’s unusual dying wish to play social director to the eclectic group of tenants, she’s surprised to discover they are not what she was expecting.
Her days as an RA in her college dorm were inadequate preparation for personalities such as a jealous librarian who names her Thanksgiving turkeys, a charmingly naive mechanic who thinks New Wave is beach music, and a volatile menopausal woman who claims to be a delicate flower.
To add to the mayhem, she meets Logan, an attractive young bartender with a penchant for rescuing her from absurd antics, such as losing her phone to a raccoon and thinking Long Island Iced Teas contain little alcohol. As Jason’s behavior becomes increasingly suspicious and erratic, Lia can’t help being drawn to Logan’s thoughtfulness, wit, and intense blue eyes.
As she adapts to her new community, secrets and lies emerge, and Lia wonders what the deceased, AND living, people in her life are hiding. Working to uncover the evidence, Lia hopes a wacky, unexpected visitor from beyond will provide the answers she craves – before she loses her grip on reality, and the love of her life.

As y'all may know, I'm a sucker for chick lit, cozies, and light paranormal books so I was excited when Carol Maloney Scott announced her new paranormal chick lit book, NOBODY TELLS LIA ANYTHING! I loved the idea of Granana playing matchmaker—she was probably my favorite character—and while there were some predictable moments, there were definitely a few things that kept me guessing right up until the end! The cast of secondary characters were a hoot as well. Would love if they were my neighbors! If you're looking for a light chick lit read with a little love triangle, crazy neighbors, and a ghostly Granana, go snag your copy now!
Laugh-out-loud funny! Perfectly charming, quirky and heartwarming characters. Interesting plot that kept me thoroughly engaged throughout. Enjoyed every minute of it! Can't wait for the next one!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
This isn't for me, I'm afraid......I knew it was going to feature ghostly goings-on but I hadn't got that far before I gave it up. What managed to spoil it for me was that Lia didn't read the letter her grandmother had left her BEFORE relocating, and I'm sorry, but she was well aware that that missive was going to be explaining her terms and conditions, so she would've read it pretty much as soon as she laid hands on it, and to think she hung onto it till moving-in day I thought was just rubbish. Then apparently she'd read up on her new tenants and she was also extremely close to her deceased grandmother, but she clearly never spent ANY time with her as she was clueless about her life with them altogether, it seems. Just made it too farfetched for my tastes. Not sure why she keeps capitalising the word Will but she does, day dreaming doesn't merit a space, girls nights out needed an apostrophe and it is stationery and not stationary. I was 10% in when she made another veiled criticism about her boyfriend Jason. This was a bloke she'd been with for 5 years but every single sentence in which he merited a mention was also a snide comment or dig about him.....that was already tiresome. I did like the dedication at the beginning for Benny a great deal but that was the high spot of this one for me, I'm afraid.
I read it at a sitting! Lia is hilarious. I've fallen in love with all the side characters and crazies living in and around the Pentagon apartment complex...can't wait to see more of them in future Spooky Matchmakers stories. I did want to kick her boyfriend in the balls. All good things come to them that wait.
What a hoot!! This is a laugh out loud paranormal romance that is utterly fantastic! Great characters all around not just the main ones but all the secondary ones too. They are fully fleshed out and alive. This is a really well written and very funny book. Such a different plotline and presented in such a dynamic and hilarious way. This is the first book by this author that I've read and will not be my last. I hope this is the first installment in a brilliant new series. I would highly recommend this to everyone who likes a laugh out loud paranormal matchmaker romantic comedy. A rollicking good time! I recieved an advanced copy from the author. This is my voluntary honest opinion.
Yes, nobody tells Lia anything, including her recently departed (except when she sounds like a ghostly gang member) Grandmother. Lia is adorable and has to deal with a bunch of characters that will make you laugh.
The story begins with Lia and her parents at the reading of the will of Lia’s grandmother, her Dad’s mother. Lisa’s parents are hippies from Vermont and her dad is a famous “Happiness Guru” who is always happy, and equally happy to share his “Happiness Tenets.” (I’m laughing again, just writing this!)
Turns out that the will has an unusual provision and Lia must move to her Grandmother’s apartment complex in a small Virginia town, Applebarrow. According to her late grandmother’s desires, Lia must live there as the apartment manager for a year and bring the residents of the complex closer together.
We have fun meeting all the residents of the apartments as Lia helps them to plan monthly get-togethers. One of the residents is the attractive Logan. Will Lia settle in to the country life?
Maybe, but she’s young, a recent college grad trying to find her way. She has left a boyfriend and her plans for the future back in Richmond. Can she find her way with this crazy new life? (Turns out she can’t literally find her way, she gets lost a bunch, but we cheer her on as she figuratively tries to find herself.)
Readers, you will laugh and have fun with all of Lia’s antics. Good writing by Author Carol Maloney Scott. The book was a bit slow and repetitive for me, but overall, I had a good time in Applebarrow! Thanks to The Letterers Collective for a review copy. This is my honest review.
This book is like wrapping an awkwardly shaped present, all frustrating and unruly until taa daa! you end up with a perfectly wrapped package tied with a pretty bow.
When I first started to read this book it reminded me of Matchmaking for Beginners so I was very hopeful I would enjoy this story as well, unfortunately I didn't like it as much.
I liked more of the secondary characters than I did the actual protagonist of the story, Lia. Lia, for the most part, lets other people direct her life. Nothing that happens in the story (other than getting drunk her first night in town) is instigated by Lia, but rather occurs as a result of actions performed or suggested by others. Lia is consistently complaining about being alone, lonely and missing her boyfriend (who works sooo hard to fulfill his dreams, while she works a dead-end job/ does nothing so that one day she too will have an opportunity to fulfill her dream) but really seems to do nothing to change that experience other than attending resident-driven events in her apartment complex.
I loved the characters of Granana and Sassy, and I think Axe was an interesting character as well. I hope some of the other residents, such as Molly and Olivia, get a chance in the spotlight in further episodes, as well as the mechanic brother, Tucker.
I really liked it, but the ending let the book down just a bit
The book starts out with a dramatic Will reading. A lighthearted tone makes sure it isn’t sad or heavy. Lia is to bring the residents of her late grandmother’s apartment complex together, socially.
But not everything is as it seems.
Nobody tells Lia anything.
Not Jason, her boyfriend. Not Amy, his work wife. Not Logan, one of the residents. And certainly not Granana, her late grandmother.
But then again, Lia doesn’t tell her boyfriend everything either. She’s only ever complaining about him to us (the readers), and she’s also only ever defending him to everyone including herself. She refuses to really SEE that he isn’t good for her.
I really liked the whole book, it was entertaining and enjoyable - and then the end came and it was just too quick. Something happened that was just too sudden. With not enough explanation at the time. Lia doesn’t even know everything yet! Too abrupt. There’s this whole slow, long process and then all of a sudden BAM. The whole book had been full of detail, and that’s what the ending lacked. There was a HEA, but I was left feeling ever so slightly disappointed by the speed and suddenness. I did read an early copy, so it might have changed, I don’t know. But I can only judge what I have read, so it cost the book a star.
Bedroom door stays closed but there are some slightly naughty references and there is some swearing.
Wow! This is a delightful book full of endearing characters that succeeded in making me laugh out loud! Lia is a lovable young lady who shows some understandable confusion when her beloved Granana leaves some unusual conditions in her will. Lia needs to leave her home for a year, move to where her Granana lived and play social director to a group of tenants whom she is suppose to make happier. She (Lia) decides to do this to honor her Granana and find out more about her life. Lia manages to find her way even though faced with many challenges such as a boyfriend from her home who is acting strangely, new friends who are acting equally strange, tenants who seem to be happy without her help, multiple situations that are hilarious, and a new man who seems to frequently save the day and has enough honor not to interfere with her current romance. During this time no one ever shares everything with Lia (as the title suggests) and she is determined to know it all . Granana makes some interesting appearances in the tale while she learns to handle her new situation. These are unique people from many walks of life who come together to win your heart and leave you smiling. This author has the ability to tell her story with unbelievable wit and grace. I probably should not have stayed up till 5 AM reading but it was difficult to put such a wonderful tale down. I will read this story again!
Oh, what a crazy ride this book was! Lia's life is turned up-side-down because of her late granma's will. She moves into her granny's apartment complex believing she has to be it's manager, but her dear granny had other plans in mind! Even from the beyond, she plays matchmaker, trying to persuade her to give up her current boyfriend Jason and fix her up with Logan, the hot bartender and resident of the apartment complex.
Needless to say, the residents of the apartment complex is an assortment of eccentric characters, while Lia is prone to crazy accidents, involving Long Island Teas, raccoons and mud, to name a few. Not to mention that everybody has something to hide, starting with her boyfriend.
The book is full of humor, crazy antics, and yet deep emotional moments. One moment I laughed out loud, while the next I cried as I felt the emotional turmoil Lia was in. While some will claim that Lia was trully stupid in trying to save her relationship with Jason, I can't help but sympathize with her. She's invested too many years of her life in a relationship and she feels that she has to try and salvage it. But the heart wants what the heart wants, and with a little help from the spirit realm everything comes full circle and questions are answered.
This was my first book by Carol and it really hooked me! I read it in one sitting and I can't wait for the next book in the series|!!!
🙈Zany, with a naive heroine and a tad de trop silliness🙉 August 26, 2019 Format: Kindle Edition 👻💕😁 I ultimately found Lia's story enjoyable but it could have been better. This book improved as it built momentum and, as the months progressed, lives changed and new relationships formed. Heroine Lia gets involved in the lives of her new tenants and does some detective work to get a better understanding of why her Granana specifically requested her stay in rural Applebarrow, Virginia as a stipulation to her large inheritance. All of that is good, interesting, often amusing.
🙉💕🙈 Her love life, on the other hand, is a repetitive string of suspicion and then ignoring the signs that something's rotten in Jason, the boyfriend she left behind in the city. Their long distance relationship is disappointingly one-note. And her ghostly Granana's visits and Lia's odd pajama fetish are just too silly. If Granana's visits actually advanced the plot it would have been better IMO, but she keeps getting sidetracked and disappears before Lia gets her questions answered. Having only Lia's POV through the whole book kept the wondering and suspense alive, but it also made the other characters a bit stereotyped.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Lia leaves her life in the city for Applebarrow, a small town due to a clause in her grandmother's will. She must live there for a year and manage a small apartment complex owned by her grandparents before their deaths. Her job is to act as cruise director to help a group of unhappy people become happier. When she arrives, she soon realizes that these people, while quirky, are all happy and get along well despite their differences. Trying to understand why she has been sent there, she is flabbergasted when her grandmother's ghost appears to fill in some of the gaps.
As a result of her move, her personal life begins to blow up. She sees the life she has been living for what it is - aimless and not particularly happy or fulfilling. She will have to decide who and what she wants in her life.
Filled with quirky characters like a snooty librarian, feisty ghost, some ex-hippies from Vermont as well as a slew of other unique and lovable characters, there is a dash of the supernatural, a bit of a mystery and a wholesome romance all woven into an enjoyable read.
Four stars for this romance with a touch of the supernatural.
This is an honest, voluntary review of an ARC of the story.
I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.
The book is advertised as "Laugh Out Loud Paranormal" - I did not find this to be true. I smiled a few times but no laugh out loud moments for me. At times, I found this story to be very tedious. Lia has a boyfriend Jason- and Lia is told on numerous occasions that he is not right for her - and Jason behaves on numerous occasions like he is not right for her. Lia is told on numerous occasions that her neighbor and bar owner Logan is perfect for her - and Logan is shown on numerous occasions that he is perfect for her. Yet, Lia complains about Jason and daydreams about Logan - over and over again. I get Lia's reluctance on not wanting to quickly give up on a long-term relationship - but, I'm sorry I just got tired of her wishy-washy behavior and every time it happened - Jason bad, Logan good - I audibly sighed. I think this would have been better had it been shorter.
The narrator, Rosie O'Toole, did a very nice job. She provided various voices for the different characters.
A light -hearted read that is just what the doctor ordered.
Nobody Tells Lia Anything is the first Carol Maloney Scott book I have read. I will be reading more! Written as first person present tense I was a little wary to start with, but the more I read the more I enjoyed it. The book starts slowly, I would have preferred a bit more pace at the start, but the book is so easy to read the pages almost turn by themselves and it is hard to put down.
The author has created a cast of eccentric characters that I can see being entertaining for the whole series, I love the character of Granana, she's a hoot! I wish she would make more appearances!
The ending came a little too quick, both in my wanting to keep reading and the wrap up of the story. For most part the book progresses slowly, but humourously, through the plot but I thought the ending was a little too condensed. But maybe that was because I enjoyed it so much!
I recieved an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review, and am glad I did, I can;t wait to read what happens next.
If you’re looking for a feel good, make you chuckle, swoony read then Nobody Tells Lia Anything by Carol Maloney Scott is perfect. It's a good add to your beach reads for the summer. Lia is a loveable character whose naive nature is a charming edition to a cast of hilarious secondary characters, and some not so funny ones (I’m looking at you shady boyfriend Jason). The town of Applebarrow sounds delightful, and the apartment complex Lia inherits from her cooky grandma is full of characters that made me laugh out loud, and heavily swoon (Hello, Logan!). What I truly loved about this story was how everyone in her grandmother’s apartment complex connected, they were like a little community, a little family. Hysterical yet genuine and heart-warming. Her grandmother’s ghostly meddling was also a delight. The writing flowed very well, and the story had several good twists and turns that kept me turning the page. A little bit of mystery, a love triangle, and self discovery, turn this story into the complete package!
This was definitely one of the most entertaining reads I've had this year. Whatever genre you prefer you should be able to find something in this one. Paranormal, mystery, rom-com, family issues, small town living, wealthy heiress ... there's a little bit of everything wrapped up in a laugh- out- loud funny story that keeps delivering chuckles and surprises from start to finish. Scott has created a full cast of characters I recognized from my own life, from the naive and trusting heroine to her melding granana, hunky and ever helpful Logan, manipulative Jason and the whole gang at the Pentagon Place apartments. They're quirky, sometimes obnoxious and often self-absorbed, but together they are a community- even an extended family, and I came to love them all during the course of the book. If you're looking for a light-hearted, sweet read for a summer afternoon, you can't go wrong with this one.
I am no stranger to books from Carol Maloney Scott. Even though this was not part of her other series, it was an enjoyable read.
The story starts off with Lia learning about her grandmother's will and what she has to do to get her inheritance. A few hoops have to be jumped through (that only involve uprooting her life to take over a complex that her Granana owned) but she feels that she can do it. Along the way she realizes that she has less work than she imagined and starts to get confused as to why she is there. As well as being confused about her boyfriend she left back home, her Granana life, and even her residents she is suppose to be 'looking after'. As she slowly starts to piece these things together she realizes some of her old life may not be in the cards for her anymore. In the end she realizes what she needs.
A few nitpicky things I have about the book are conversations that seemed skipped between characters and the ending that, though expected, was too quick.
When her Gran dies, Lia discovers her will has some odd stipulations. One of those requires her to work as an apartment administrator for the complex her grandparents owned.
While this will cause her a separation from her current live in beau, her current job as a personal shopper is something she can easily leave behind.
Lia discovers that the life she left behind was one with little in it for her . Her long time beau Jason says he wants to stay and build a life with her .
Finding out bits of her family past and opportunities for her skills and inheritance to be put to work show her a very different possible future- one that might not include her inattentive and manipulative beau.
Add in a very quirky collection of characters at the apartment complex and a randomly appearing ghostly grandmother, a fun and wacky read I really enjoyed.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is the first book by Carol Maloney Scott that I've read, but it certainly won't be the last. I enjoyed this book so much. Lia is a spunky gal who seems to have lost some of her spunk in the shadow of her boyfriend. So when her grandmother dies and gives her an 'assignment' to get her inheritance, she packs up and moves to Applebarrow to manage an apartment complex her grandma owned. And that's where the fun begins. Lia has a lot of...mishaps. And almost all of them will have you laughing until your sides hurt. I had to stop reading this book in bed because I was waking my husband up laughing so hard.
I love a book that combines romance (a hint of mystery) and humor all together. "Nobody Tells Lia Anything" is a perfect combination of all of these. I don't want to spoil it, so trust me, you need to read it.
This is a great book; this is book 1 in the Spooky Matchmakers series written by Carol Maloney Scott. This is a great book with well-developed characters. Once I started reading this book I didn’t want to put the book down until the end. I can’t wait to read then next book by this author. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Thank you to Hidden Gems for providing an advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I greatly enjoyed this story. Lia, a twenty-something woman, lives with her boyfriend in Richmond, VA. They are planning to move to Europe when his company opens an office there in the near future. Lia’s plans are upended when she discovers her recently deceased grandmother’s wish is that she live in and manage the apartment complex her grandparents had owned. Lia wants to honor her “Granana” and commits to living in the small town of Applebarrow for a year. In the process she will meet the quirky residents of the apartment complex (including the good looking and kind Logan), forge new friendships, learn family secrets, and try new activities. Will Granana influence Lia’s life from beyond the grave? Find out by reading this book.
OMG.. This was one of the funniest books I’ve ever read! I was laughing so hard at some points, I had to cover my mouth so I wouldn’t wake up my husband haha. Reading about Lia, and her Granana was hilarious. The little apartment complex housing the quirky but lovable tenants, and the love triangle had me turning page after page until I finished the book. Jason is Lia’s boyfriend, but Logan is interested in Lia and seems to turn up whenever she needs him. That’s a LOT because she sure does find herself in need of rescue on more than a few occasions. There were a few twists and turns along the way, and every one of them just added to my enjoyment of the book. A new author for me, and I look forward to reading more of her books. Well worth the 5 stars
I really enjoy what I’ve read from Carol Maloney Scott in the past, and Nobody Tells Lia Anything sounded like another promising novel to me! I loved the ghostly aspect that we got from the story, and also the quirky setting of Applebarrow. Lia is a fun main character to follow, a little clueless but good-hearted in her intentions to follow out the wishes in her late grandmother’s will. We get plenty of laughs from the secondary cast, from Lia’s parents to the tenants in the apartment building that Lia is now overseeing. Of course there is a romance angle and a bit of a love triangle that was fun to follow along, and overall I had a good time with this chick lit novel. Would definitely recommend for a light-hearted spring read! I received a review copy
This book is so funny. If you like a book that has mystery, love triangles, and ghost then this is the book for you. Lia inherits an apartment complex, along with a factory that was shut down years before by her grandfather, and her grandparents fortune from her deceased grandmother. The only problem is that she has to move from her home in another town, leaving behind her job and her boyfriend of 5 years to live in the apartment complex and play entertainment director for the complex for a year in order to get her inheritance. But it seems as if grandma has some matchmaking plans from the grave planned with one of the residents of the complex. Oh, and grandmother comes back to haunt her to give her advice. Overall this book will keep you turning the pages to see what comes next.
Wellllllll, Frankly I truly enjoyed the book! Yep, even I got a little frustrated with Lia, blind and lost, but with her parents, well understandable. It took me some time to get into book, I kept thinking, okay something is going to happen now.. Jason, a total and complete snake, who really wanted Lia for her money, almost if he knew eventually she would get an inheritance from her grandmother. Ironically, it was what one saw. You really had to think about, however KUDOS for the Thanksgiving dinner. That was so sad, it was truly funny, best part no one seems to bothered, and Lia finally catches on and simply watches, "dinner theater". I did like, however, others of yours I enjoyed far more. The story started out slowly – I almost gave up at chapter two but glad that I plowed through. It gets so much better after that. I did not think chapter two added much to the overall book. There were parts that I though dragged on for too long, so I just skimmed them.
I liked the humor, liked to hate the boyfriend – what a creep! Eventually, he gets what is due him.
Great characters. It was pleasant to get to know the characters. Unique individuals. Hope to see more in the future in this series.
I received a copy from the author and am not obligated to leave a positive review.
My first read by this author and I loved it! Even though the story was over 400 pages, it didn't drag. This book was hilarious and I especially loved the secondary characters. This was more of chick-lit with lots of character development for Lia, the MC, than a true romance. I look forward to reading the next story, which is about Molly.
It should be noted this was going to be a five star read but I got sick of
Omg, this book is so funny. I loved the Granana from the otherworld, with her crazy cloths.. Soo funny. Lia is a very loyal woman and realy wants to belive her long term boyfriend but he is really sketchy... And them we have the mistyrious Logan... So sexy... And at the same time a true gentlmen. I have to tell you i had to put my face in the pilows so i wouldn't wake my baby girl with my laugther. It is a must read!
Lia's grandmother dies. In her will she wants Lia to move into a family owned apartment complex to be the social director. She is to live there for at least one year. Lia uncovers family secrets that were kept hidden for years. Lia has a boyfriend, Jason, who does not have her best interests as a priority. Lia meets Logan and immediately feels some spark with him. This novel is a page turner. You really want to keep reading to find out details of the happenings with Lia.
