The Irregular at Magic High School, Vol. 11: Visitor Arc, Part III

Rate this book
USNA Major Angie Sirius's arrival in Japan as Lina the American exchange student was suspiciously coincident with the vampire attacks occurring in the vicinity of Magic High School. With the parasites behind the uproar finally neutralized, things have mostly settled down. However, since they merely vacated the bodies they were inhabiting, it's only a matter of time before the parasites find new hosts. As soon as Tatsuya learns the vampiric creatures are still on the loose, he rejoins his friends on the hunt to eliminate the monsters once and for all-even if Major Sirius hounds him in the process!

Haven't had wi-fi when I was reading it, and now it's been too long and can't remember particulars so my star rating will have to do.

Overall, this was a good read, but it seemed a little disjointed.

The final part of the Visitors Arc, plus a short story about Mayumi. The plot seemed to be rolling along pretty well in the first two parts of this arc, but when it came to wrapping everything up it seemed like I was reading somewhat disconnected fragments rather than a cohesive whole. It was not unenjoyable, but it did feel disjointed and I wasn't clear on the logic of some of it. Too many cogs, I think. There were so many disparate groups involved, so many political angles and machinations, that it was hard to keep track. Especially when some of them appeared to pop up out of nowhere just to complicate things. I got the vague impression that the author wanted this story done with and cut a few corners, but it doesn't detract hugely from the story.

The short story at the end gives us a view of Mayumi Saegusa's home life and Japan's only acknowledged strategic magician. It's main purpose appears to be to introduce Mayumi's younger twin sisters who are going to turn up at First High in the next book. The story is really just filler.

Overall, not bad, could be better.

The gang has a final confrontation with the vampires and the various factions within the Japanese forces. Things are resolved for the most part. We also get a peek behind the scenes - things of previous books seem more connected then appeared at first glance. The arc ends with the graduation part tying up some minor loose pieces from earlier stories and a short extra piece on Mayumi. Like earlier books, some great world building and character development. Also, there are some references to Isaac Asimov’s laws of robotics being used - a great wink to the SF classics. The part focusses a bit more on Tatsuya then the first 2 parts of the arc.

Similarly, at times the book drags a bit with too much detail. I am not entirely sure I like how the Americans as a whole are depicted. Don't get me wrong, no government is in the right in this story and that includes the Japanese. It is just that the American operatives are a bit simplistic in dealing with the parasites. It might make sense for Sirius, but would her superiors really be that uninformed? I also find the explanation on why the parasites came to Japan lacking, or to be more precise on the how. That seems to be something for one of the next books though...

In short, I enjoyed the Visitor Arc, but it was not the best of the various story arcs. Maybe it is the lack of school life events? More perspectives being used then in earlier books? Still, Tatsuya has me still hooked which is more then some other light novel series after almost a dozen parts.

A review.

I like the novel. It has been well written. It has a good plot, etc. I always like novelizations of television shows or motion pictures in back stories can be added. Sometimes it can fill in gaps that a teleplay can't due to its brevity. I hope this makes sense.

Interesting arc which showcase the capability of someone other than the main character's prowess.

glad the parasite arc is finally over. It would be cool if Lina takes Tatsuya up on his offer to go undercover but I wonder if that will ever be revisited
