At the tender age of seven, Jess Riley’s parents were ripped out of her life by the Tear, a ripple of white light in the sky which randomly transports people from Earth to alternate realities and distant planets once a year. On the night the Tear first appeared, the Watchers, a mysterious group of men possessing supernatural powers, made their presence known to the leaders of the world, earning their complete trust to deal with the turmoil the Tear caused.
Now twenty-two years old, Jess is an agent working for the Watcher Agency searching for a way to bring her parents back home. When the leader of the Watchers, Mason Collier, recruits her to join his team, Jess quickly discovers she is meant to play a major role in sealing the Tear forever. Mason and Jess instantly find themselves drawn to one another but they both resist their mutual attraction for different reasons. Broken by past events in their lives, they each struggle to overcome their fears and find the strength to take a chance on one another.
A Disclaimer from the Author:
It is not necessary to have read The Watchers Trilogy to read The Watcher Chronicles. But if you are interested in reading The Watchers Trilogy, I would recommend you not read this new series until you have finished Forgiven. What happens at the end of the trilogy is explained fairly early in Broken and I would hate for the ending of Forgiven to be ruined for you.
Once upon a time, a little girl was born on a cold winter morning in the heart of Seoul, Korea. She was brought to America by her parents and raised in the Deep South where the words ma'am and y'all became an integrated part of her lexicon. She wrote her first novel at the age of eight and continued writing on and off during her teenage years. In college she studied biology and chemistry and finally combined the two by earning a master's degree in biochemistry. After that she moved to Yankee land where she lived for four years working in a laboratory at Cornell University. Homesickness and snow aversion forced her back South where she lives in the land which spawned Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey, John Grisham and B.B. King. After finding her Prince Charming, she gave birth to a wondrous gift named Caylin and they all lived happily ever after.
The second book to the Harvester of Light trilogy will be available for purchase no later than December 2012.
I have to say book one was a pretty good read. It held my attention and I looked forward to starting book 2. So far about 75% thru book 2 I have been surprised at how fast they declare love and then the sloooow burn after the fact. They still have not gone beyond kissing. While I do understand the reasoning regarding her past it still just seemed backwards. The story seems to have gotten off track as well. So while I can recommend the first book, I am stopping where I'm at in the series.
The reason I'm still adding this series to my page is because of the first book and I really do think it will be for a lot of people who enjoy paranormal. I lose interest when there is lack of heat between the MCs unfortunately but realize that's not a deal breaker for many.
I was iffy about this story line not revolving around Lilly and Brand since I just love those two!!! But Mason and Jess quickly showed why this series was based around them. The characters SJ West has created are so amazingly cool! Angels, Lucifer, God, Werewolves..... even Vampires? What more could a girl ask for! Well maybe for this to be a very very long movie with both the trilogy and chronicles combined!!! duh! lol.
Jess Riley became an agent of the Watcher Agency in the hopes of finding her parents one day. They were among the first victims of the annual tear between realms that randomly transports people from Earth and replaces them with "Tearers" from other realms. Her job is to find these Tearers and help acclimate them to a new life on Earth. This year, an altercation with a Tearer leads her to meet the Watcher, Mason. He heads up a special group that is investigating the Tear in the hopes to close it. Mason believes Jess might be the key he has been searching for over 15 years to find. It turns out that Jess is even more than she seems.
I like the premise of this book and the author did a good job of giving it a direction. Now the pieces just need to be assembled to fix the problem - seems straightforward. The budding romance between Mason and Jess could have had a little less angst and back and forth for my taste but I expect that it will flesh itself out in future books. I'm looking forward to reading the next one.
Interesting premise of Angels in this book and the tear. I liked the characters - especially Faison. Mason was dark and mysterious, but Jess and Mason seemed to fall in love too quickly - especially given how long Mason has lived and all of his guilt.
Despite liking the story, the writing lost a star for the terrible editing - incorrect use of there/their/they're and you're and your - which are some of my biggest pet peeves. Also a lot of misspellings like taunt versus taut.
This was my first read by S J West and I have to say, I am now addicted! I absolutely loved this story and grew to love all the characters within it. The main character, Jess I immediately warmed to and the blossoming relationship between her and Mason was so heart warming. I did have a few episodes of melting during some of the chapters, It was just so cute to read xD!
Romance aside, this book has a fantastic story and plot too. The idea of the Tear and Lucifers plots intrigued me from the get go and it held my attention throughout the entire book. I literally couldn’t put it down!!
And now after how this book ended (no spoilers here but omg..!) I am launching myself straight into the second book in this series because I really need to know what is going to happen and how it’ll play out!
I loved the idea of the Tear, created by Lucifer, and a passage to an alternate universe. The take on God, angels, demons, heaven and hell are slightly different in this book which is quite refreshing.
Wish the length was a bit longer and more stuff happened, but there's always book 2!
P.S - I don't exactly get the wings the girl (which I assume is the MC Jess) has on the cover, since in this book angels don't have wings and she isn't even an angel. (Maybe it's a metaphor, I guess)
Available to read and listen via KU. Listened to the audio of this. Felt the narrator did a great job. I really felt like the world was built great, and the premise really went super unique with the angels and demons concept adding just enough new things to not make it stagnant at all. Unfortunately after the super strong start, I felt the book really drug on and on through the middle. The plot basically was at a standstill for multiple chapters while we went through a back and forth between our FMC, Jess, and MC, Mason. It drug on for so long in fact that I almost gave up, but I'm glad I didn't because things finally picked right back up there at the end. I could actually tell that this series was a spin off but never felt like I was dropped in the middle of the story. It seems like these events happen after the events from the previous Trilogy.
FMC, agent Jess Riley, was orphaned at age 7, when out with her parents trying to see the aurora borealis a worm whole opened up and her parents disappeared forever. Every year since then the worm whole opens up taking people and leaving people from alternate dimensions in their place. Now years later Jess is a part of an agency of "Watchers" that helps the people transported through the tear come to grips with their new world all in the hopes that some day she may be able to find her parents again. During a routine transport of a "tearer" back to the station Jess's eyes are opened to a new supernatural aspect to her world as her passenger goes demon and tries to kill her only to end up a pile of ash. At which point she becomes super interesting to the head "watcher", Mason, who's main goal is to seal up the tear and she has just demonstrated powers that may lead him to his goal...
We start with a lot of questions, and spend the entire book waiting for answers. I say waiting because it doesn't seem like our characters are really all that bent on finding answers as much as just waiting around till someone gives them the answers.. Some reveals are finally made and then we go back into waiting for answers again. Then we are left on one heck of a cliffhanger ending that made me want to dive right into book 2, I just don't know if I want to do a whole lot more waiting for answers.. I'll think about it.
DNF. Made it to chapter 10/22. I started reading this book because the description is about a tear in our Earth’s dimension that is randomly sucking people from Earth into other dimensions with other Earths. It sounded super interesting. Sounded a little bit like the TV show Fringe from about 10 years ago. False advertising! This book is entirely about angels and Satan. The tear between dimensions is almost a side story. The author has God turning Angels into vampires and werewolves as punishments, and meanwhile, Satan is written as a hottie who just wants to be your friend.
We live in an era where cultural appropriation and misrepresentation is no longer acceptable. In my opinion, that same respect should be shown toward people’s religious beliefs. I really can’t imagine anyone writing a book like this about Allah or Buddha or elements from the Qur’an. Why would Biblical elements be okay to misrepresent in such an awful and insulting way? It was awkward and uncomfortable to read, and I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone.
As a side note, the main female character uses the term “ample bosom” in the first chapter to describe another character. What 22 year old on this planet talks like that today?? .... and this book is set in the future! Honestly, I almost stopped reading at that point because it was an instant cringy “oh-no” moment and that was before the Biblical references entered the picture.
Wow, what a great story. Even if it did end on a cliffhanger, and I'm sure the other books in the series will too.
This is about Mason , an angel, and Jess, who fall in love but Mason leaves her to protect her from Lucifer's evil men.
There is no sex and no swearing. AND I won't be reading any other after these 4 in the series, because I can't read books for teenagers.
As to the narration: I think the reason I liked this book so much was because of Brittany Pressley. She's simply awesome, with the men and women's voices and her emotions.
Read via audio through KU; the narration was excellent!
I cannot believe I’ve not read these books before now! This book was just amazing; I don’t read much YA any more but this was phenomenal! Had everything I didn’t know I was craving.
I thoroughly enjoy the characters, the pace of the story line and this world S.J. West has created, boarding on sci-fi in nature. Straight onto the next book!
This continues the story from the Watchers trilogy which my advice you read first (and you will love it) Some of the characters from the first series appear in this book. The author does a great job with her characters and you feel their emotions. Good well made story of Angel's, love and action. I highly recommend both series.
An angsty romance with a fantasy, sci-fi twist on religion. The story has a lot of potential, the story of fallen angels, the tears, Lucifer, and vessels for archangels who may hold the key to saving the world. The book is medium paced though there were parts that lost me. For most of the story I was able to follow along but the romance between Mason and Jess gave me heartburn at times.
Only once in a great while do you come upon an author that makes you feel everything her characters feel. I can’t stop smiling and laughing with them, crying and sharing their pain. She truly has a gift and I can’t wait to read more.
I didn't read the Watcher Trilogy (didnt know I should've read those prior) but I like this series so far. I felt I didn't miss much by not reading the previous series. This jumped right in and took off! I loved it! Jumping right into the 2nd book
There’s a great storyline and some amazing characters, but it seems Rosie’s and melodramatic. The storyline is good enough I am going to try book two, though.
I think i'm actually beginning to be a little jaded what with all the choices that are out there for me to choose from.
This book had a really good story. I thought the idea behind it was great. The whole 'watcher' thing with the tear and other dimensions and universes ; i liked.
What i realise i don't like with audiobooks by now ; the ones that have both a female and a male lead, but only has one voice actor. Hint ; pay yourself another oneeeee. I hate when a female actually has to do the male's voice ALL THE TIME. It's really hard to get hooked to the story when that happens!
I do think i'll be checking one the next one of the series eventually. But not right away!
I love series that feature angels and near-apocalyptic scenarios and this one is no exception! I was so happy that I found it and took a chance to read it!!! I began "The Watcher Chronicles" series before ever reading the first series, "The Watchers," and was perfectly able to follow along; though the background knowledge from the proceeding would have made things a little clearer, it was not absolutely necessary to read it first.
Having lost her parents when she was seven years old to the Tear- a literal tear in the fabric of the universe that randomly whisks people off to distant planets and alternate realities- Jess waits year after year for them to come back to her. Now 15 years later she's still waiting, but becoming an agent for the Watcher Agency has taught Jess to become stronger and learn to fight her own fights, taking crap from no-one, least of all Mason- the leader of the Watchers. After a run in with a demon in the desert leads to mysterious powers emerging in Jess, Mason appoints himself as her guard to keep an eye on her to see what new things will develop, never expecting for feelings to be one of them. As the two tip-toe their way around each other, they face a problem that can very well lead to the end of life as they know it.
Loved Jess and Mason, although I wanted to kick Mason's a$$ on more than one occasion. I haven't read the rest of this series yet, but moved on to Caylin's story and then fell in love with Malcom so I HAD to continue on to the Redemption series- following him and a descendant from Caylin's line as they are once again trying to save the world. These books are quick-ish and easy reads, but they have sympathetic characters and continue to keep my attention ... I'll keep on reading them as long as S.J. West will keep on writing them! :)
Broken The Watcher Chronicles Book 1 By S.J. West 12 July 2015
After reading "The Watcher Trilogy" twice, back to back. I just had to read how everything was going to progress!!! I'm one of those readers that will read the entire series and then seek out anything the Author has also written. I'm very loyal, smile....
I loved the way Author S. J. West smoothly transitions in to the next faze of her Watcher Series. With ease she effortlessly delves into the the lives of new characters, while continuing to develop further the characters from her first Trilogy to also continuing the characters I came to love and also the ones I loved to hate.
She is truly a master storyteller!!! I crave each page like a part of me that I've misplaced and won't be the same until I've recovered it. I am in absolute awe......
Her series has touched my soul like my mentor and Author "Ms. L.A. Banks" who's no longer with us, but I still own and reread her "Vampire Huntress Legend Series" every so often..... I used to wait one baited breath every six months just to buy my copy of her next installment.....
I can truly say without a doubt, that Author S. J. West has an absolute Forever Fan!!! I've already downloaded books 2 and 3 of this continuing saga..... I Definitely recommend this series and give this book a 5 Star rating!!! ~WaAr~

This book has an interesting premise in that so many years before this story begun, a giant 'tear' appeared across the sky and lots of Earth's citizens disappeared through it to be replaced by citizens of other dimensions. Every year the tear opens and every year more people are lost. At the time the tear appeared a mysterious group of individuals stepped forward to help keep order and these were called Watchers. It is not common knowledge who the watchers are or where they come from but the leaders of the world trust them implicitly.
Jess is a young Watcher agent with secret talent. Through a series of events she gets drawn deep into the world of the watchers and discovers she has a special destiny that must be fulfilled or bad things will happen... Pretty standard fare really but the world created was incredibly interesting. The author writes about angels and fallen angels without religiously pontificating. She writes heartfelt characters who you really like and bad guys who you want to know more about. There is a slow(ish) burn romance that romance lovers - like me - can sink into but it doesn't dominate the story and you 100% do not have to have read the sister series (prequel series?) to this one to follow the events and enjoy them.
On a side note, when I borrowed this book via Kindle Unlimited, I also got the audiobook included (on loan). How cool is that?! I ended up listening to the book via audible and the narrator was pretty good! The pace was nice, it was easy to differentiate between characters and it wasn't too long!
Broken is a brilliant, exciting and enthralling story.
Jess Riley thought she lost her parents in the Tear. Which in turn, made her become a watcher. With the hope that she will find them one day. A significant thing happens that quickly changes her life. Thrust into one of the chosen, whose destiny is basically to save the world.
This was such a fantastic tale. I loved Brittany Pressley’s narration. Her voice just took over, and I found myself not being able to think of anything else. There’s a major love story; it feels very epic. The way that Jess and Mason come together and then start to fall for each other is beautiful. It’s also quite heartbreaking for both of them.
I’m glad that stumbled upon this story. And can’t wait to jump into #2. I love the whole angels vs. demons; it’s fascinating. Thanks to the audible romance package, I wouldn’t have probably stumbled upon it.
It took me less than 24 hours to finish this book and I cannot wait to start the next. I didn't know how I'd take the transition from the Trilogy to the Chronicles but it was easy. These characters were just as, if not more likable than the originals and the originals do make their appearances. This romance is so much more believable and I really like Mason. Jesse's awkwardness is adorable and relatable. And the end...I'll just say I can't wait to start the next one!
Amazing series! I didn't notice that I started reading the 2nd series installment until I was at book 3! But I'm just going to have to finish all the way to "Redemption" and then start with book 1 when I'm done because I just can't seem to stop until I find out how it all ends. S.J. West is a FABULOUS AUTHOR!!! If you enjoy the Angels/demons genre, then you MUST READ THIS SERIES!!! But start with "Cursed" (book 1 of Watchers trilogy). Awesome sauce!!!
West skillfully extends the WATCHER TRILOGY to fully expand characters between serials in BROKEN, Book 1 of THE WATCHER CHRONICLES. Humans become more than monkeys to the original seven archangels and become the vehicle of West to restore the importance of human souls. Enjoyable writing with a new twist. I'll keep WATCHING (reading) the tale.
I really loved this book. I couldn't put it down. The storyline is really interesting and I'm excited to see where it goes in the next books. I really like the way this author makes you connect with her characters. I love her characters so much that I'm about to dive into book 2 right now!
