Number 7 in the S-Squad series and this time Captain Banks and the team faces trolls in Norway. This one is my favorite in the series so far and it has a few nice angles in here which it brings out with a combination of history, mad science and extraterrestrial intrigue, which makes this the best crafted book so far. The body count is also the highest of the series so far with a troop of trolls rampaging through suburban Norway. This is exactly what I have come to expect from the series, fast paced and full of action, and a nice break from reality.

The Troll Reception

Captain Banks and his S-Squad are sent to Norway to sanitize a research center.

They must destroy any of the research information that may have been left behind fifty years ago.

While there, they discover that something has violently destroyed the campsite.

Dead bodies, though frozen long ago, have been cannibalistically brutalized.

When setting off some C4 to begin their “sanitizing,” they awaken a sleeping giant and boy is it angry.

This..rocks.. hehhehe pun

This book might be super stoney, but not with the emotions it had me feel.

With what happened in the last two books, this one especially hit hard like a ton of bricks...
And i can't help it with the puns, but the squad really was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Captain Banks and his crew have been promised extended leave and their next few missions to be in warmer, easier climates. Only none of that was to be when Banks is called into the office of his Corporal and instead of their leave being approved, he is given a new and urgent mission. Promised it’s a quick in-and-out and just a look-see with potentially an explosive “sanitation” of the site, Banks is hoping for once their mission might be straightforward and relatively easy.

I really enjoy these S-Squad stories by William Meikle. With big beasties, a well-versed group of Army squaddies and a strong hint of paranormal (and very mild horror) these are the best kind of B-grade monster movies in a quick story that I could ever imagine. The stories are usually shortish (about 150 pages) but they are always high action with loads of explosions and shooting and quite a fast pace to them.

Readers looking for something strongly intellectual or high brow won’t find that here. These are fun, fast paced, action shoot ‘em up style of stories with monsters and beasties and a whole load of rambunctious fun.

This time our favourite squaddies are in Norway, and I was really pleased with the atmosphere the author created. With such a short page length I feel Meikle did a brilliant job keeping the tension high and slowly fed the reader enough hints and tips to both what had occurred in the past – and therefore what we could expect our squaddies to unearth – for me to be eager to continue reading. When the action begins it’s all the usual S-Squad fast paced romp and I feel readers who enjoy this series, and this style of writing will be as happy as I was.

Fun, frivolous and a romping good tale – this was a great story and excellent addition to the series. Recommended.

It's a cold trip to Norway for S Squad but an easier mission. The remote outpost was previously used as a base to carry out joint operations between the UK and Norway. The team are tasked with destroying any evidence that could prove damaging. Banks discovers that scientific experiments were carried out on soldiers, resulting in the creation of a super-sized monster, and that monster has been awoken by the arrival of the team.

Oh dear, S Squad simply can't catch a break! A simple clean up mission goes badly pear-shaped when Banks finds a diary detailing the experiments on volunteers amongst the soldiers. The creation of the super-soldier has long been of interest to governments but this time, they were attempting something very advanced, turning a poor unfortunate man into what could be described as a Cave Troll. By investigating where the samples used in the experiment were taken from, the dormant Troll has woken up somewhat grumpy.

How do you take on a creature made of hard rock? Well the team are going to have to work that out quickly to save themselves from the monster, dealing also with harsh weather and being cut off from help. I liked that again, this was a totally different kind of creature that they were dealing with, with new challenges rather than just let's shoot and kill it. The team must use their brains as well as their weapons to try to win this battle. And of course they do it with the usual ironic humour that I love in these guys.

The book also brings in the ethical dilemma of experiments on the soldiers. I feel sorry for the men who volunteered to serve their country and were condemned to brutal pain and misery. I liked to see the mental struggle that Banks was having over the prospect of having to kill one of their own, seeing the monster as the soldier he once was and hating the thought of him being killed. It was nice to see the added depth to his character as he struggled to deal with the situation.

Another excellent and dramatic story with unexpected twists.

Captain John Banks is still having his hunches, and thank goodness he does. They certainly help, even if things do go horribly wrong. For once the squad ends up having to do some of their hardest work in a heavily occupied area (content warning for child death), bringing new challenges to the fore. There’s also something of a mad scientist added to the monster-mix this time.

I don’t have a lot to add over my reviews of previous books–all the wonderful aspects of them are repeated here. The characters are simple-yet-interesting. The monsters are scary, with a few poignant moments mixed in. The squad spends plenty of time swearing and shooting at things, although maybe not as much shooting as in some previous books. As Wiggins himself pointed out in a previous book, this is something of a Scottish “X-Files”-like series. It’s a fairly simple genre, but Meikle carries it off unusually well.

I truly hope Meikle plans to publish more books in this series–I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for them!

While I have been basically reading these stories out of order, I am still familiar with the triumphs and loss of the notorious S-Squad. With this last installment, I think I have finished them all. Insert sad face here. You know its a good series when you're feigning for a new or the next book. This squad of Scottish soldiers are not only badass but they are true ma=onster magnets. Alas, if you are already on book 7, you're probably a creature feature loving fiend anyway.

This book is special to me out of all the others in the series because it really hit me in all of my feels. In Operation Norway, the creature of the day is...Trolls. I don't want to give anything away other than for some reason, I am jonesing to see that Norweigan film 'Troll Hunter' again. The squad's mission in this book is not a simple one of putting down the beast. Instead Mr. Meikle really gets into what it means to be a solider considering all that the S-Squad has been through.

My favorite so far!!

Trolls!

Past losses have come back to haunt Cap and it comes at a heavy cost. In what was supposed to be a simple mission becomes a journey into past military experiments by the UK and Norway. A lost recruit is found d but in a mutated form. A huge stone troll. The squad tracks down the creature and subdued it in hopes of getting him help. Unfortunately that is not the case as a mad scientist type decides to treat the unfortunate soldier as a experiment. And then we find out the professor has even more of them during his experiments he goes to far and the results end in all the rock trolls awakening. Thirty or trolls escape in a murderous rampage and the so squad and a troop of Norwegians try to rein them in. Plenty of gore and action makes this my favorite so squad novel to date

Absolutely Love the S-Squad!

The S-Squad series has no drag about it! The action starts in the first chapter and keeps going till the end. Well written, creative, the author does a excellent job bringing his characters to life. I will not put any spoilers in here, but I really hope there are more S-Squad books in the future! There is so much more out there for the S-Squad to discover and blow to buggery!

Another fun, high-octane read from the S-Squad, this time tackling alien trolls (yes, that’s right, alien trolls!) first in the fjords of Norway, then later through its suburbs. As is par for the course with this series, it’s not the most highbrow of reads, but it goes along at a pace that never lets up.

FANTASTIC!

I love how these books are covering myths and legends.

Each soldier has redeeming and not so great qualities but they seem like REAL soldiers you could meet!

"Matinees we are leaving" but hopefully only for a short time for the next great book!

S Squad are sent on a simple sanitising mission to a long deserted project site, but nothing is ever straight forward for this team. What they uncover proves deadly and the team have to fight for there lives, trying to save one of the poor subjects. Good book that moves at a good pace.

Trolls!

I really enjoyed this book. It had local lore mixed with science fiction. This book also discussed loss and regret in an interesting way. I actually ended up feeling sorry for the troll.

Fast paced, keeps your interest, a bit sad at times, a bit different from SS usual stories as you almost become understanding of the Troll - great read

William puts his S squad in harms away again. Military science experiment gone wrong, ancient beings melded into rock coming to life. He creates a great adventure story here full of fighting and violence not any girly stuff that makes a book boring. Giant Rock Trolls doing bad things and the S squad must save the day. fun read.
