“Is it true?” With these words, Giulia Livinius Volusenus knows her son’s world has been turned upside down with the revelation that the respected Roman Centurion, Titus Pullus, is his father. Even worse, Giulia knows that Gnaeus’ newfound knowledge means that her former, and recently reunited, lover is dead. Now everything Gnaeus Volusensus previously thought to be true about himself is to be questioned and revised. He has decisions to make that will affect his future and that of his yet-to-be-born children. There are also new Pullus relatives who bring with them a whole host of challenges, and threats. Meanwhile, with the mutinies by the Legions on the Rhine and in Pannonia finally quelled, Rome’s new Emperor Tiberius has turned his attention to avenging the slaughter of Publius Quintilius Varus and three Legions under his command by the Cherusci chieftain Arminius. It will prove to be an extremely trying time, not just for the Army of the Rhine, but for the Fourth Cohort of the 1st Germania, especially for Titus Pullus and the young Equestrian Centurion Gnaeus Volusenus. In this fifteenth installment of the bestselling Marching With Caesar series, the final months of Pullus’ life are explored. What events led up to his death? How did he save Volusensus by sacrificing his own life? Most importantly, will Volusensus be able to carry on the Pullus tradition of leadership in Roman Legions?
The first adult author with whom RW Peake developed a long-term relationship was Louis L’Amour, whose body of work shaped his life philosophy. After retiring from the Marines, RW proceeded to earn a BA in History from the Honors College at the University of Houston.
Although RW wrote a novel as a kid, he didn't publish his first novel until age 50. In addition to is time in the Marines, and before the tech bubble burst in 2000, he was a paper millionaire in the software industry.
A native Houstonian, RW recently relocated to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington, where he lives with his yellow Lab, Sadie.
This instalment of the Pullus family story is just as interesting, surprising and page turning as any of the others. What I, and many other readers no doubt, suspected finally see the light of day. Not, perhaps in the way many would wish but this sets forth the ripples that we will see effect the Pullus family in the next instalment. This whole series has been a real not to read
This book 15 of Mr. Peake's series about the lineage of Roman soldiers named Pullus. This is a particularly hard book to read if you follow the series. The last book ended with the death of Titus and this leads us through his last days. Every chapter has you wondering if it was the last of Titus Pullus. When it is the last you can't help shed a tear or two.
Peake is good at pulling each set of emotional strings with this entry in the saga of the Pullus family. Even though fans will have known the outcome from the ending of the last book, it’s still a testament of his writing skill that one feels the impact of the conclusion regardless. Highly recommended read.
Overjoyed when I noticed this book featured the actual history rather than the alternative history. It was a long wait. Exceptionally captivating and nearly impossible to put down. Hurry of with part 2!
Yet again another great addition. There were parts where I was genuinely sad. Bravo to the author for allowing me to become so attached to the characters. I eagerly await the next installment.
Too much about interpersonal relationships and not enough about Roman history and war. Keeping track of all the characters over multiple generations is getting difficult.
