The last thing partners-in-crime, Taylor and Sam, expect when caught red-handed picking pockets is an all-expenses-paid trip to Paris to work as spies. However, uncovering corporate espionage in the City of Love is at the bottom of Taylor’s to-do list. For her, capturing self-centered Sam’s romantic interest takes priority. Bullets fly, hair gets straightened, discount stilettos bought, and jealousy pervades. Is he worth the trouble?
Picking Pockets, as the author, Marian Bron, notes in her acknowledgment, has been percolating for 32 years – since a visit to Paris. The story is predominantly narrated by two teenagers, Sam and Taylor. Bron uses a very unique approach in the story-telling and it works brilliantly. The use of first person creates an intimacy with the character and handing the story back and forth between Taylor and Sam allows for a broader perspective than 1st person usually allows. There is also a sprinkling of 3rd person “Meanwhile” sections to flesh out the story even more. The story itself? Throw in the slightly criminal element of pickpocketing by Taylor to make money for Sam’s medical school expenses and the intrigue of an intelligence organization and international villains. Add a little romance and jealousy (in the City of Love)….I won’t spoil it. This is young adult fiction and wouldn’t be my normal choice of reading material. However, the story has great pace and is an easy, enjoyable read. Not surprisingly a sequel is in process. I look forward to the next adventure of this cast of characters.
Taylor and Sam are two teenagers with an unusual relationship. She is full of bravado but lacking the confidence to stand up for herself or to set life goals. He on the other hand knows what he wants and has no qualms when it comes to using people to get it. One is a giver, the other a taker. Ultimately, Picking Pockets is a story about understanding and accepting those closest to you. The book was a lot of fun to write, giving me the opportunity to live vicariously through my pick-pocketing spies. Enjoy!
I found the characters charming and realistic. I loved the way it shows the main characters as just a couple of innocent young people who believed there was nothing wrong with what they were doing. I recommend people read this book. I know they will enjoy it as much as I did.
