This is a good start to what promises to be an exciting series. I loved the concept of many worlds accessed via seams that can be opened by mages with the proper spell and enough power. The book opens with an evil tyrant overthrowing the ruler of a kingdom called Chevalon. A mage loyal to the king manages to rescue the king and queen’s two-year-old son and daughter. He spirits the children and their caretakers through a seam to Chicago. From that point on, the story moves back and forth between the two worlds as the children grow up thinking they belong in our world, while the evil tyrant never ceases his search for them and their parents.

I occasionally had a little trouble following the timeline when the character of Phaetrix, the mage, thought back to things that happened in the past. I’ve read some novels that note the year of the action or how long ago it happened at the beginning of chapters, and that would probably have helped in this one. I was usually able to figure it out, although it did interrupt the flow for me.

The invasion had begun! The usurper, Mortas Frost, was attacking and the mage Phetrix had to get to the royal children and save them at all costs. He had once accidentally opened a seam into another dimension which he kept secret. Now he could use it to transport and hide the prince and princess on another world in the city of Chicago.

The children remained hidden over fifteen years, but Mortas never stopped looking for them. When Rhoden, a mage serving Mortas, discovered the ancient spell, he was able to send forces through the seam to resume the hunt for the royal children. Now Phetrix and a small band of loyal followers must defend those royal heirs and prevent their capture and death at the hands of Mortas Frost. Can they keep the children safe? Can they defeat Mortas’ forces? Or must they seek another world to hide in?

This is an enjoyable, exciting read. The action is gripping, the story line is fast-paced, with an intriguing plot and engaging characters. Highly recommended!

Escape the first novel in the Seam Travelers series is an incredible book written by Jason J. Nugent. This book drew me in from the very first page and I admit I had a very difficult time putting it down. The plot was very well developed and had a very nice twists hidden within that the author unraveled throughout the story. The pace of the book was just plain perfect. There was always something happening and left me never feeling like the book was dragging out. On the other hand the author never rushed me through the story either. A well put together novel that I really enjoyed.
