This book may not be as deep or comprehensive as other books on the topic, but it is a really nice introduction to whet the appetite. I thought it was very approachable and well written. The author's focus on women also appealed to me, because, duh - I'm a woman. I really appreciated the sections on women's health issues and sex - topics that are too often overlooked, glossed over or just plain not discussed. I definitely feel inspired to implement some of her suggestions in my life. I also anticipate the meditations, recipes and resources that she includes are going to be useful. (And now I have the itch to re-read The Red Tent. Because reading something the year you graduate high school is not the same as reading it when you're...a little bit older than that. Ahem.)
Пити більше імбирного чаю, свіжий імбир найкорисніший. Або ж чай з додаванням кардамону, коріандру;
Більше жирів (лляна, конопляна, кунжутна олія); Частіше вживати: гарбузове насіння, фініки, кокос і кокосова олія, авокадо, мигдаль замочений у воді та очищений, насіння льону, волоський горіх, батат, кабачок та баклажан, шпинат, родзинки, лохина, червона сочевиця, тушковані м’ясо та риба;
Легка їжа ввечері для мого типу Доші - супи та трав’яні чаї;
Нарізати імбир скибками, збризнути лимоном, додати дрібку солі. Їсти кілька шматків перед їжею або під час неї щоб покращити метаболізм та роботу травних ферментів;
1/4 склянки соку алоє вера вранці і перед сном для кращого засвоєння поживних речовин;
Okay, I had to get over myself and yes, read a book that had the word sexy in the title. It's bizarre that I should be embarrassed by that I guess. The word does have a rightful place there though-- because there are three pillars of Ayurveda, and sex is one of them. I was only familiar with the doshas and food/herbal part of Ayurveda before reading this book. In a Western way, much of what I knew about Ayurveda was what herb to buy to balance my out of wack pitta/vata. This book gives a good overall explanation of each of the three pillars, and then provides recipes, mantras and meditations. Everything presented is very approachable. I recommend it for any woman interested in learning more about Ayurveda.
Great introductory book for learning about the ayruvedic lifestyle. Information was easy to comprehend and easy to adapt to a modern way of life. Also, the recipes in the back are delicious.
If you want to read a white woman writing about an ancient practice from another culture, this will be the book for you. This book has some obvious and glaring errors ("eskimos" do not have over a hundred words for snow; women do not sync cycles) and definitely wouldn't be an effective tool for anyone who has even a basic knowledge of Ayurveda already. It does serve as a very surface-level exploration of what the Western world thinks Ayurveda means but doesn't provide anything new to the subject.
I read this bit by bit in preparation to undertake Katie's Ayurveda course and this was a very accessible book geared specifically towards introducing Ayurveda to modern Western women. I'm born and raised in Australasia but I can relate to many of the things mentioned in the book and appreciated this gentle overview before I embark on years of study to become a practitioner.
Published in 2015, Katie shares some meditations, recipes and how-to's on living by Ayurvedic principles and it serves as a gentle nudge to start your practice if you haven't already, and bit by bit adopt this beautiful lifestyle through a deeper connection to our inner selves. With my background in yoga and tantra, I found the information easy to digest.
Given that a lot of books on this subject are either very dry or tries to do too much in one volume, I loved this chatty intro to Ayurveda and it is a recommended place to start before diving into more detailed study.
Silcox teaches us how to love our bodies and ourselves. Her book is about more than yoga, she relates how we can fully embrace our human experience. As a male reader, I felt like she was letting me peel back the layer of feminine secrets that had always bewildered me. Surprise!, sex is not merely a physical act for women. "In order to supercharge your sex life, you've gotta start by training your mind." I mean, who hasn't had an orgasm interrupted by thoughts of a work deadline? And if a male partner can get past a woman's big O as the goal of intimacy, then we may achieve a "healthy, happy sexy" life.
This book was recommended to me by my yoga teacher after talking to her about my interest in becoming a Yoga Teacher. I am so glad that I read it. There are so many wonderful references and eye opening and heart enlightening ideas and practices for your everyday life. I love this book and the journey it has taken me on for the past few weeks. I recommend this book to everyone.
Perhaps not the book for me, I found myself crossing certain things out before realising that I would not be keeping the book. Certainly a good introduction to Ayurveda, and paired with online resources it helped me discover my Doshas. Some good recipes included and many tips for eating better and daily routines. I wouldn't necessarily recommend the book.
I'm new to Ayurveda and this was certainly an interesting read. There is so much to learn regarding foods, herbs, and oils that it can feel overwhelming. I appreciate the women power/positivity in this book. I'm not sure much of this info is very accessible for those of us on very tight budgets, but it's helpful to know where you can start small. All I'll say is- that's a LOT of sesame oil lol
This book is an easy to read, relevant and modern take on Ayurveda with easily digestible (pun intended) ideas for living a more centered and pleasurable life. I read this book after taking a workshop led by Katie. She has a magical and passionate way of presenting information that makes it relevant and fun.
I am not going to lie, I was a little put off by the word Sexy in the title. However, I felt like I got a lot out of reading this book and it gave me some practical tips and reflections. I enjoyed the meditations and see some spaces where I would like to go deeper. Overall, a good and interesting overview of Ayurveda!
Despite the girlie magazine-style writing, I loved this book. Ok, I loved the writing too. It reads like a guilty pleasure but it contains many brilliantly distilled principles of Ayurveda. Helps the American reader connect in a unique way.
The book is not bad. There was some interesting information on ayurveda philosophy and its outlook on diet, exercise, way of thinking etc. There are some nice ayurvedic recipes, both culinary and esthetic (like herbal remedies for colds, home-made beauty products etc.) However, I lacked guidance. For example, the author obviously values spices, and she does provide some recipes that use them, but I would like a more general description of how each spice can (and should) be used, otherwise I will just end up coming home with this huge bag of exotic powders not knowing what to do with them. The recipes she provides also seemed a bit too exotic. The author advocates using home-grown products that our grandmas used in the past, but where do mangoes, quinoa and agave come in? I understand it is an Indian philosophy, but couldn't we also use our beloved apples, currants or beets (which are also much cheaper but still very good for you)? Overall, I don't regret reading this book, I found out a lot of interesting things, but I think it should have been more holistic and concrete.
This is such a wonderful book! After the first chapter I felt like I was glowing with excitement about the rest. The description on that back made this sound very shallow and vain take on ancient practices, converting them to unintelligent modern women with more air in their head than above it. And so when I received my AR copy, I didn't have high expectations. Boy was I wrong!
I consult this book often. There are journal options and questions, each chapter challenging you to look at life in a slightly different way, but never in a pushy manor. The whole tone is pleasant and kind.
My husband actually texted me the other day saying he hoped I didn't mind that he was borrowing it, because he thought the chapter on sex was very useful and he wanted to read more....ha!!
So needless to say, this has definitely earned a happy spot on my night stand. :)
This is a book I want every woman in my life to read - and maybe certain chapters for their significant others. While it's a lot to digest and many people shy away from newness, I feel that so many people would benefit from the advice and resources this book has to offer. I will definitely revisit it frequently and am looking at the resource section to slowly integrate more of these practices into my life.
