Born in 1946 in Meerut, educated in Hyderabad (Sindh) and London, she is among the front rank writers and poets of Urdu. She is also the author of several short stories and novels. Three volumes of her novels and collection of short stories, apart from the Urdu translation of selected verses from Shaikh Ayaz and the Iranian poet, Farough Farrakhzad have also been published. She has translated a selection of ghazal from Divan-e-Shams Tabriz into Urdu. She has travelled widely and lectured at universities and cultural forums in many cities of Europe and the United States.
She lives in Karachi where she has been publishing for women and children.

ایک کتاب
یہ کیسا جگ مگ سونا ہے
ان حرفوں میں،
ان لفظوں میں،
یہ ، کچا سونا ، جس کی ڈلک سے میرے نین دمک اُٹھے
میرے تاریک لہو میں کیسا نڈر اجالا در آیا
اور سارے تن میں پھیل گیا
یہ کیسی سچی سانسوں کی گرمی سے کتاب پگھلتی ہے !
یہ کس دل کی دھڑکن، دھک دھک
میرے دل سے ٹکراتی ہے !
میں کان لگا کر سنتی ہوں دروازے پر کیسی دستک !
اس گھر میں تو اندھیارا تھا
پھر کون جھروکہ کھلتا ہے
یہ کہاں سے آئی چندر کرن
جس سے روشن سارا آنگن
میرا دل ایسے چونکا ہے
حیرت سے آنکھیں بھر آئیں
یہ آنسو پیار کا آنسو ہے
یہ آنسو، اُجلا آنسو ہے
اس آنسو میں تو ہنستا ہے
وہ کچّا سونا ، جس کے ڈلک سے میرے نین دمک اُٹھے
یہ کیسا جگ مگ سونا ہے
ان حرفوں میں،
ان لفظوں میں،
یہ ، کچا سونا ، جس کی ڈلک سے میرے نین دمک اُٹھے
میرے تاریک لہو میں کیسا نڈر اجالا در آیا
اور سارے تن میں پھیل گیا
یہ کیسی سچی سانسوں کی گرمی سے کتاب پگھلتی ہے !
یہ کس دل کی دھڑکن، دھک دھک
میرے دل سے ٹکراتی ہے !
