Thunder Girls #3

Idun and the Apples of Youth

Rate this book
From the authors of the Goddess Girls series comes the third book in a series steeped in Norse mythology, magic, adventure, and friendship.

Twelve-year-old Idun is the goddess of youth, and her magical and deliciously sweet golden apples are what keep all of the academy’s gods and goddesses healthy and youthful. They grow year-round—even in winter snow—in one very special grove in Asgard.

But when the mischievous Loki ends up making a bet that jeopardizes Idun—and her powerful apples—she must figure out a way to protect herself and her magical orchards from a giant who wants those apples all to himself! Can Idun save the apples—and the gods and goddesses who rely on them—from the two bad seeds at Asgard Academy?

Long-awaited! Still a fantastic cozy, comforting children's fantasy. Idun is a kind people-pleaser who struggles with expressing her needs, asserting herself, or making her true worth visible. Since the series is set in Scandinavia, sprouts from myths and focuses on the lives and friendships of young women, it's a good read for Frozen fans.

A sweet book! I think I like this one best of the series. Idun is a very likeable, sweet character and I enjoyed her sweet first blushes of crush with Bragi. Thundergirls is a very well written series and can compete with Goddess Girls. I could learn a lot! Idun is my favorite Norse goddess (and of course, in the book). Highly recommended for all mythology and Rick Riordan fans.

Mehhh, wasn't really my cup of tea. I was re-reading my favorite book series from when I was a kid, and...
I suppose I wasn't the brightest child.
"Crushes?" Excuse me? They treated "crushing" on someone as a binding agreement that must be agreed upon by both parties as a mutually exclusive relationship that isn't a relationship.
I don't know what the Nordic call it, but here in the States, we call that a relationship. You know? Boyfriend and Girlfriend?
Ah, whatever.
The storyline was a little bit too basic, and the characters a little too underdeveloped, but definitely a good book for kids just reaching their tween years, looking to read books a bit older than Elissa Weitman.
A sweet, funny read for kids between 8-12, I would recommend this book to them or anyone searching for a light book that reminds them of what its like being a tween.

Liked it

The plot line is very cute and I love Idun; she’s so sweet (in the series and original mythology) and yet ignored so much. This is my favorite of the Thunder Girls series and I would definitely recommend it to fans of mythology, specifically Norse (obviously).
The reason I gave it a 4/5 instead of a 5/5 is not about the book but the series. While the main plots are different, the romance plots are very similar: a boy and the main character like each other but feel awkward and aren’t sure if they “like like” each other. At the end of the book, the boy kiiinda admits his love and the girl just thinks “I like him as a friend anyway. Maybe sometime, we’ll come back to this ‘feeling’ thing.” It’s kind of repetitive. Otherwise a great book.

When Idun's tricky classmate Loki makes a deal with a giant/eagle to capture Idun, Idun must find a way to escape. But Idun feels like her friends don't appreciate her apples anymore, even though they keep everyone youthful. They don't really like to eat the apple chips, apple fritters, and other apple related foods served at the school cafeteria, known as "the V". The eagle who captures Idun is a giant in disguise, and he really wants her magic apples all for himself. Meanwhile, back at school, the students are getting older and older by the second! Idun has to find a way to get out fast, because otherwise she and her classmates are going to be really old!

Another solid entry in the Thunder Girls series. Everyone finds Loki's trickster ways annoying, but Idun believes that he has a good heart. Will Loki prove her wrong? One again, Holub/Williams's characterization of Loki is spot on, and their interpretation of the Norse myths is utterly charming. The only minor quibble I had was that all four girls were obsessed with fashion in the opening scene after their personalities already having been established otherwise in previous books.

I loved the first 70% of this book, but then I lost interest. My favorite character is Freya and these books have made me wanna learn more about her and Norse mythology. I hate Loki in every single thing I have seen him in and can't stand him as a person.

Despite the fact that I lost interest in this book, I still think it's worth reading. I recommend this series to your kids. I'm hoping the last book in this series is awesome.

There are things about the author’s verbiage that just annoy me. Also it’s like everybody has a schtick: Idun has the apples, Skade likes boots. Loki is the most well developed character. These are cute for what they are but hoping I can turn my kiddo onto Rick Riordan for her myth-based fiction soon.

I read this book about a year ago right when it came out. I always liked the writers, but the story was kind of infuriating because Idun didn't even get a chance to say she wanted the cloak before Freya snatched it up. And I think Freya should have given it to her at the end of the book but she didn't, so now she's not my favorite character. Also it's sad how nobody cares about Idun's apples.

I read this book in one sitting. I love Norse mythology (Magnus Chase!), and this book pleased me. I saw this book at the library, not realizing it was the 3rd book, so I will definitely go read the others. The characters are well made, the
Plot makes sense, and I recommend to kids 9+!
