Jack is determined to root out the evil in Arcanton and enlists the aid of John Asher and Catalyst to do it. Meanwhile, Eleanor, all grown up and graduated from medical school has achieved a fame status from her early medical exploits on Nar. Questions arise, though, causing Eleanor to doubt herself. She decides, in a brave move, to take up an ambassadorial exchange physician program to the closed-off colony of the Westlands, an enigmatic place on the other side of the planet where Arcanton has been losing its foothold for decades. Rumors abound about the region, closed off from most outsiders, and shrouded in magic. Eleanor is determined to help heal their overabundance of magical malady cases and see the place for herself.
Meanwhile, on the far reaches of the icy tundra, 16-year-old Liberty Fields struggles to survive in the Gulak, a Rusky mercenary factory where she has lived since childhood because of her wild, unpredictable magic gift. She ferociously carves out her life there until one day she is plucked out of the Gulak by a mysterious Westlander, Doctor Thomas Lawrence. Life does not cease to be difficult for Liberty, however, as she finds herself struggling at the Westlands Junior Military Academy to curb her violent impulses and learn how to become part of a team. Will she be able to meet the demands of her new life?

When dark secrets begin to unravel, Deliverance’s clan must decide where their loyalties lie. They must wrestle with the what is the cost of liberty?

A Magical Alternate History

Once again, this story drew me in from the first page. Although this has a darker story line, the characters are just as engaging. And the magic! So much wonderful magic which is allowed to flourish and be the showcase of the story. While we get to know a whole new set of characters, all of the familiar favorites from the first book are front and center as well.

I love how the storyline is based on real places and real problems, but set in a fictional setting with names reminiscent of the real ones. I wish our land t imbued with magical power, imagine how fun that would be! If you’re looking for a wonderfully written magical tale, then this should be on your reading list for sure. I’m looking forward to reading what comes next because it’s sure set up for an epic turning point!

Engaging, edge of your seat story telling at its finest

The second book in the series, this exceeded all expectations after I enjoyed the first book (Deliverance) so much. The story is a fast paced adventure of political, familial, and magical intrigue that made it awfully hard to put down.

I so loved part one of this series and couldn't wait to read this one. I should mention again that I simply adore the names and what they mean to the characters. It is told from different perspectives and gives insights into not only other people but the places and politics. My favorite in this part was Liberty. Her path took a direction I didn't see coming and neither did she. When threads merge things really get interesting. The pace is perfect and the details bring things to life. I loved how it made you think about real world issues without interruption the magic of the story. Very well written on all levels.

My grandmother was floored. I can't decide which book I like better. She can't either. It's explosive. Check it out if you like Hunger Games, Divergent, or Harry Potter.
