FROM POPULAR GAY ROMANCE AUTHOR K. EVAN COLES Book one in the Boston Seasons series Sometimes you have to start over to get love right. Luke Ryan’s life is too chaotic for romance, what with running his business and being the legal guardian to his ten-year-old niece, but he’s hopeful he’ll find the right man. Trauma surgeon Finn Thomason recently relocated from Chicago to Boston, where his focus on medicine leaves him little space for a personal life. Making a commitment to find a better work-life balance, Finn hopes he’ll also find a relationship. Caught in an evening rainstorm, Luke shelters under a sidewalk awning…and encounters a handsome stranger. The two strike up a conversation and Finn offers to walk Luke under his oversized umbrella. Charmed, Luke accepts and asks Finn out for coffee in thanks. Luke and Finn quickly grow close, but, as the summer draws to an end, Luke struggles to keep his connection with Finn while Finn tries to come to terms with caring for a man whose attention is pulled in many directions. Both men are scrambling to get it right, but only time will tell if they’ll learn there is more than enough room in their hearts to go around.
K. Evan Coles is a mother and tech pirate by day and a writer by night. She is a dreamer who, with a little hard work and a lot of good coffee, coaxes words out of her head and onto paper.
K. lives in the northeast United States, where she complains bitterly about the winters, but truly loves the region and its diverse, tenacious and deceptively compassionate people. You’ll usually find K. nerding out over books, movies and television with friends and family. She’s especially proud to be raising her son as part of a new generation of unabashed geeks.
K.'s books explore LGBTQ+ romance in contemporary settings.
This was a fabulous story! Unimaginable realistic and with the most engaging personalities. So many feelings, I loved the way this story was built, the whole plot, absolutely fascinating.
Who could ever think you meet your love under a sidewalk awning. But Luke and Finn did.
Luke has the care of his ten-year-old niece. His love life is on hold because no guy can handle a man with a ten-year-old girl to share your time with. The start with Finn is somewhat different. Luke is clear about his situation and it seems Finn can handle it, it seems they both can handle it... like I said ‘seems’.
It’s not a light story, there is so much depth. We see both men with their awful full agendas, one of a trauma surgeon and one an owner of an IT company trying so hard to stay strong. The connection between Luke and Finn was heartfelt and mature. Lots of conversations, they try to meet each other as much as possible and when they are together they are sensual and passionate. We meet both their closest friends, we see a lot of interaction with niece Ella, we see struggle and confusion and failure. The hurt goes deep and was all so palpable, my stomach hurt by it all. Both men were so kind, flawed and lovable. I loved it how it all processed and progressed. It wasn’t an easy ride but oh boy, it was so worthily and precious real I wouldn’t want to miss a thing. I’d even read several parts over and over again. What a top read this was!
This is a rare find; a love story of two men who act like adults, having actual conversations about their differences and problems. Who knew?! That’s an oversimplification but this was a highly engaging story about building a relationship amidst the demands of professional careers, family and friends. There are a few instances of non and mis-communication but they aren’t used to contrive drama for the sake of drama. Ordinary human foibles create the tension and anticipation necessary to lift the plot and drive it forward. The characters are well-rounded, including all the friends of Finn and Luke and the 10 year old niece Ella. I’ve often complained about not enjoying kids in my stories, yet the darn things keep showing up! Ella was written superbly for that awkward stage of a kids life, between childhood and adolescence. The setting is awesome, as I lived and worked in Boston and the surrounding suburbs for many years and greatly enjoyed glimpses of familiar places. Pacing is excellent for the entirely character driven, dual POV narrative. Recommended for low angst, stimulating steam-level and engaging romance!
*An ARC was provided by the author, publisher or a promotional service and I have chosen to publish a fair and honest review*
This story opens with a cute meeting for the men as Luke is caught in the rain without an umbrella and the men are attracted to each other from the start. The book is character and relationship focused and we see the daily lives of both men and how they try to balance a relationship with work and the demands of family.
Luke is guardian to his niece as his brother is in the military. He is devoted to her, but his schedule is demanding. He hasn’t had a lot of luck with men in the past when they learn about Ella, and he’s wary of Finn’s reaction when he finds out. Finn never expected to date a man with a child, but he feels a special connection with Luke and is willing to keep an open mind, yet Ella isn’t overjoyed at the new development.
I enjoyed meeting both Luke and Finn and seeing their relationship unfold. The book overall was a little slow as we see a lot of daily activity from both men and while I do enjoy that aspect, there was that little special spark missing for me here. The tension in the story comes from the work schedules of both men and the demands Luke has with caring for Ella. The men are good together and their intimate moments are filled with passion, but their relationship is new so they don’t have in-depth conversations that much at first and their lives start moving in different directions without putting down a framework for what they are looking for.
3.5 stars rounded down because oh yeah, still no 1/2 stars here on GR, full review to follow soonish!
‘Third Times the Charm’ was my first time reading this author...
...and I’m pretty sure it’s not going to be my last because at the very least be looking for the next book in this series.
Between running his computer programming company with his friends, being the primary caregiver for his 10-year-old niece with everything that raising a 10-year-old entails the last thing that Luke Ryan has time for is a relationship.
Finn Thomason’s new to Boston and with his hours in the ED at the hospital, trying to find himself a place to live and the whole reason he left Chicago there’s no way that he’s looking for a romance.
Yet when these two men spot each other in line at the local Starbucks and then meet again when Luke’s caught without an umbrella during a torrential downpour and stops under the awning of the nearest building to wait out the storm. Not willing to just walk away from someone that they’re so attracted to the two men decide that where there’s a will, there’s a way and some how they’ll find the much needed time to spend with each other.
I can only imagine how frustrating things were at times for Luke and Finn, since I found things to be more than a little frustrating at times. But my frustration was also due to the fact that I really like these two and I wanted to see them together as a couple.
I really can’t say that I would call this story a slow burn, it was more a case of constant progress interruptus… over and over again. You know that old saying ‘life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans’ well for Luke and Finn it was also a case of ‘Life is what happens when you’re trying to have one. While a busy life wasn’t the only problem these two faced at times there was also a definite breakdown in communication; another one of those real life things that can happen sometimes no matter how hard we try to avoid them and sometimes it seems like the harder we try the more things can break down.
Interestingly enough Luke’s niece turned out to be a bit of an emotional quandary for me. I loved her bad jokes and while I wanted to like her I also felt like she was keeping me at arms length along with Finn and it was this same thing that had me thinking the author did an awesome job portraying her character since given her circumstances she really didn’t come across as a child who would be open and affectionate with the world. Ella knows the pain of having someone you love and who you should be able to depend on more than anyone else in the world leave, she’s not a bad child by any means just one who’s scared of being hurt again. So while I did get where she was coming from I still found myself getting a bit frustrated with her as well.
Overall I enjoyed this story there were a few moments in the pacing that just felt a bit too slow for me causing my interest to wane and ironically at the ending I almost felt like things were a bit rushed…maybe a bit of the story time could have been shifted over to add to the ending but then again if you ask me where to take that time from I’d tell you I don’t know because while there were parts of the story that the pacing seemed slow for me everything connected…so I guess when it comes right down to it, I really just wanted a bit more ending.
One of the things about this story that I actually enjoyed the most was just how easily it was to imagine a relationship like Luke and Finn’s happening in the real world…how many times have any of us made a comment like “there just aren’t enough hours in a day.” Well for some of us that could be a daily mantra and that’s the case with Luke and Finn. I’m really looking forward to the next book in this series with the hopes that it will fill out the ending from this book making me a very happy reader.

An ARC of ‘Third Times the Charm’ was graciously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
This story had me super entranced from the start. I am sporting a big time crush on Finn! And I’m a sucker for a good book cover and I’m in love with this one.
While standing in line for coffee with his friend, Luke turns and notices the hot guy behind him and smiles. Finn smiles back, but they both hesitate and miss an opportunity to speak. Later that night, they run into each other again under Finn's friend's awning and this time when the sparks fly, they take advantage of the situation.
The meet-cute in this was epically arranged and romantic as hell. I loved how both Finn and Luke paced themselves and were so adult about their blossoming relationship. There were plenty of hurdles on both sides and there were times when my throat got tight, but I loved their story. It was so charming and sweet.
This read felt so timeless to me. The characters were just so emotional and real, wanting and trying so badly to ensure the other was priority. It was refreshing to read such a deeply charged romance with two passionate MC's. I really loved this story and felt their instant connection so deeply. Gah. Totally recommended.

This is my first read by this author, but any time I see a hot dad, or in this case, a hot uncle, I can’t help but get suckered in.
In this one, we have Luke, who is taking care of his niece, Ella while her daddy (Luke’s brother) is deployed, or stationed in a different state. Its been a few years and the routine is working for them, even if it does put a damper on Luke’s social life. I mean, not many single men want a ready-made family. Dating is hard when you’re a single parent… I remember!
And Luke’s life revolves around her, she’s his first priority….. as she should be.
Finn is a trauma surgeon and doesn’t have a whole lot of time for much. What with crazy work hours and really pushy friends to boss him around. I do have to mention that I didn’t like any of the friends in this entire story… Maybe, Mick, or Mack, I don’t even remember his name, but he’s one of the friends’ husbands…. He seemed alright, but everyone else was so bossy and pushy and seemed jealous or possessive. I just didn’t like any of them.
When Luke and Finn catch each other’s eyes at Starbucks, a phone call interrupts either man from saying hi. Luckily, they run into each other a few days later and that starts the “courting.”…. This goes on for a really long time. I felt like there was so much dialogue and explaining things, I found myself skimming a good half of the book. I’m sorry, I know that’s rude….but nothing important happened as far as I could tell. I didn’t feel like I missed anything and it was sooooo much of the same thing.
I liked how they took their time getting to know one another before introducing Finn to Ella. Finn wasn’t sure he was ready for such a big step and Luke wanted to be sure that Finn was going to be around before he started introducing him to family.
Ella, I was confused about. She seemed older for her age, and the cussing was kind of something that put me off. I mean, she’s 10, but swears in front of adults?? Not in my neck of the woods, her behind woulda been eating a bar of soap. And hey, I’m no prude… I live with 4 guys… I’ve heard it all, seen it all and have likely seen it all and said it all, myself…. But let one of my kids be that disrespectful and swear in front of anyone….. Wouldn’t happen more than once, I’ll say that.
Eventually, though, we get to the good stuff and these two fall for each other. There is somewhat of a misunderstanding… poor communication and again, the friends, or one in particular, gets in the way… but other than that, once the two talk about what they want with each other, the last third of the book is cute and doesn’t drag on so much.
It had a cute ending, so I can’t be too disappointed, but it’s not one I’d revisit or probably even recommend.
4.5 stars! K’s first book in the Boston Season series starts off with low angst and sweetness. I adore Finn and Luke so much. Finn is amazing and sweet. Their meet cute is perfection. Both times. ;) Luke is just as fabulous. His loyalty to those he holds closest is heartwarming. He sacrifices his personal life over and over until he meets Finn. Even if it takes them a couple times to get there, Third Time’s definitely the Charm.
Ps. I want more Simon!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Three and a half stars rounded up to four. I’ve never read any books by K. Evan Coles before so I was very happy to be given an ARC in return for an honest review. Luke and his friends run a successful firm in Boston and he has custody of his niece while his brother serves overseas. Ella had been abandoned by her mother when she was young and, with her father serving in the Forces, living with her uncle was the best option. Finn is a successful trauma surgeon who has recently moved to Boston. His hectic lifestyle means that he has little time for a personal relationship. When Finn and Luke trade glances at the local coffee shop and then actually meet and talk while sheltering from a storm sparks are kindled but there is no engulfing flame. They have the obstacles of their jobs and a young child so it wasn’t going to be easy. This is a slow burn romance but it is definitely worth reading. There were a few times when I wished that the book would speed up a little but, generally, the pace was good. These two men are not going to get their happily ever after unless they fight for it. If you don’t mind a book which is not on steroids this is worth reading. It is also well edited and well written. I would be happy to read more by this author.
My first ready by this author and I really enjoyed it! A thoroughly engaging and uplifting story about the intricacies of dating when you're a single parent (albeit a temporary one) and also the complications of trying to become a 'third-party' to a ready-made family. This had two engaging men who actually act like adults and talk about their problems, differences, wants and desires. So refreshing! I loved both Luke and Finn and adding 10 year old Ella into the mix just made this a wonderful story that you don't want to miss!
This woman loves to torture me with her words, and this was some epic stuff. Between Ella and problematic Chad, I was up to my ears in it, but I soldiered (hey, was that a pun?) on to the very end. Like most of what she writes, K Evan had some surprises for us, some angst, and have I mentioned problematic Chad?
Finn and Luke’s story was a joy to read and I’m looking forward to more from this bunch of friends.
Generally pleasant M-M romance between an IT programmer and a ID physician. Their dance of attraction is quite protracted, with myriad internalized and external roadblocks, misunderstandings and assumptions - so much so that I was beginning to get a little frustrated / annoyed towards the end.
This story started out sweet, in fact, it was a bit too sweet and perfect and maybe just a a tad boring at first, but I’m glad I stuck with it, because the second half was much better. The first half was, I guess what you’d call the honeymoon stage of the relationship and in the second half, real life rears it’s ugly head.
I liked both Finn and Luke and I loved Luke’s devotion to his niece, Ella, but I often steer clear of books with kids and while Ella was a mostly sweet little girl, when it came to Finn, she was a little asshole and I know you shouldn’t want to do mean things to kids, but I did here. Later on when her reasons come to light her reactions made sense, but I still kind of wanted her to disappear from the story.
As for Finn and Luke, they were sweet together, but the chemistry between them was missing in the first half of the story, thankfully, nearing the end, it finally showed up and I felt the connection between them I was looking for. I loved the plot and the story was well-written for the most part.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read that I’d have no problems recommending.

Completely charming and adorable. I enjoyed this so much! <3 <3 <3
Coles’ style feels so easygoing and effortless. The pace and general flow of the story are excellent. There were a couple of points where things could have dragged or gone off track—not gonna lie, I hate “the big misunderstanding” as a plot device, and I was worried the story might lag there—but, Coles smoothly worked through the storyline and kept the guys heading where they needed to be. There were some bumps in their road, sure…Luke’s responsibilities as his niece’s caretaker take up a ton of his free time, and as a trauma surgeon, obviously Finn’s schedule is crazy, but for the most part the drama is realistic and short-lived.
Third Time's the Charm is the third(coincidence if I ever heard one 😉😉) solo story by K Evan Coles that I've read. I love her co-written books with Brigham Vaughn and her solo holiday novellas have been keepers so I went in with probably higher hopes than one really should because that route often leads to disappointment. WELL! No worries there because Luke and Finn's journey is absolutely brilliant!!
My knowledge of Boston geography is strictly from what I've read in books and see on the screen but with Miss Coles' skill of scene description, I really felt that I was there, if I looked up I wouldn't see the neighborhood in my College View development here in River Falls, Wisconsin. I expected to look up and spy Finn walking to his next shift at the hospital or Luke and Simon getting coffee for the office on their lunch break. Now granted, some of that is the author's ability to connect the readers to the characters but scene settings are a huge factor in this one and K Evan Coles is a whiz at it.
Now I should mention that I don't normally rate my reads with any kind of checklist, its all about the enjoyment, the writing, the characters, and my hatred to see it end when the last page turns. Third Time's the Charm isn't really any different but to be completely 100% honest I have to admit that Luke and Ella's love of puns/dadisms got a solid bookmark as did the multiple fandom references such as Marvel and Star Wars. I enjoy Marvel and have been a lifelong devoted Star Wars nerd since I was 4 years old, so when I see them mentioned in a book I always get a little giddy and extra connected to the story so having both got a solid bookmark too.
K Evan Coles and I have been Facebook friends for years and I know some are probably saying "that's why she loves the book so much, of course she's going to have a favorable review" well just the opposite, being friends gives me the freedom to read with a brutally honest eye. If I had issues with the story, I'd tell you but the truth is Third Time's the Charm is a wonderful read with minimal but realistic drama and humor that helps lighten the tone. This is not a rom-com, there isn't that much humor but there is enough to make this a fun read that gives hope and realism to Luke and Finn's love story.
Just because I use the term "fun" doesn't mean I didn't want to shake Finn and Luke or knock their heads together a few times because I did. You need to have some tension, be it from misunderstandings or disagreements, otherwise you'd be reading a 12-page pamphlet instead of a full length novel. There were times I wished Luke was a bit more "put my foot down" with Ella but that would have caused a whole load of other dramas which I'm sure Miss Coles would have tackled excellently but this is the way the characters spoke to her and quite frankly I can't imagine Luke and Finn finding their HEA any other way(BTW: that's not a spoiler because as so often in romance its not the ending but the journey that keeps a reader hooked). Can't wait to see what else the author has in store for this Boston Seasons series.
This was a good book. I enjoyed the whole make shift family scenario. Them adding in a boyfriend to the mix, that is always a recipe for disaster or for a happily ever after. Both the two main characters have so much going on in their lives that they have to figure out how to shift everything around to leave time for the two of them as well without letting everything else fall in the wayside.
Luke is a make shift father to his his ten year old niece. His brother is in the military and has been overseas on deployment. So he is what Ella has and he takes his responsibility to her seriously. Between work and Ella he has very little time for anything else.
After getting caught out in a storm without an umbrella, Luke meets a man named Finn. Finn remembered Luke from seeing him previously at a coffee shop and is excited to have the opportunity to speak to him as well as help him out with the umbrella situation. After walking and talking together to Luke and Finn’s destination, hey decide to meet up once again later in the week.
At this meet up, this is where Finn learns about Ella. Of course Luke is concerned that Finn will no longer be interested but surprisingly he is. So the two start slowly getting to know one another and dating when Luke is free.
After a while of dating things start to get complicated with not only meeting each other’s friends and family but with also finding the time to be able to see each other. Both men have so many responsibilities it starts to become complicated and starts to cause problems. When an accident occurs, this is why will either bring Finn and Like together and seal their future together or it could be what tears them apart once and for all.
This was a really good read. I enjoyed this book. It was a slow burning read but when things did heat it up, it got spicy. I enjoyed the drama and the connection these two men have with each other. I definitely look forward to more books by these two authors in the future.
Was given this galley copy for free for an open and honest review
What a lovely story this was. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The writing is flawless. It flows so easily, seemingly without any effort at all. And that had me reading it in one sitting. Then there are the characters. Both the MCs and the side characters are deeply developed. Finn and Luke are just to die for. Both men have successful careers, content with their life. Finn is a trauma surgeon. Luke has his own business and is caretaker of his ten-year-old niece, Ella. Then suddenly the pouring rain come meddling in. What a way to meet! It’s lust at first sight when Finn holds his umbrella above Luke’s head. If you think, it will be one sex scene after the other from then on, you’re mistaken. Of course, they have their sexy times, and believe me, the chemistry between these two men is off the charts, but there is so much more to this story. The emotions this author evokes are heartfelt and hopeful. Luke and Finn are sincere and genuine characters, who grab their chance at love with both hands but are thrown back time after time by real-life events. Growing and nurturing a relationship with busy careers and busy family is not an easy thing to do. K Evan Coles show their struggles to juggle their day-to-day lives but also their willingness to make it happen. Luke and Finn give it their all, give each other their all, but never without forgetting the important people surrounding them. One of the most difficult things is writing about children, to get their actions and reactions just right for their age. And this author hits it right on the nail with Ella. She’s a precocious child who doesn’t hide her feelings nor minces words. Just as a ten-year-old is prone to do. So besides the developing relationship between Luke and Finn, we also bear witness of Ella and Finn growing together.
Well, at least it isn't a gay-4-you or a bi guy waking up to the fact that he might be gay. In this beautifully written and deceptively plotted book we have two exceedingly likable gay men who meet cute and continue to meet cute midst bumps in the road that have something to do with their life situations--and a lot to do with their inner turmoil over previous relationships gone wrong.
Emergency trauma surgeon Finn, new to Boston from his home in Chicago, meets up with tech wizard and entrepreneur Luke by taking pity on him in a rain storm and offering him a spot under his super wide umbrella, viz the cover. After that we get to know these two intimately and how they take an instant attraction and turn it into a reasonable, persistent, but always interrupted romance. Finn's problem is his schedule which led to previous relationship disasters, and Luke's is his 10-year-old niece Ella, whom he takes care of while her father, Peter, completes his tours in the Marines--which also led to previous relationship disasters.
There is a very interesting family twist to these two brothers, and though it's unexpected, it's really treated as an acceptable part of life in liberal Boston. But it is key to how this tale is spun--almost in a matter-of-fact way that brooks no fantasy. These guys have a bunch of bumps in their roads but it takes a totally unexpected bump of sorts to get them to realize what they have, and how they must deal with it to save their relationship.
I liked everything about this book but especially the way it moves--smoothly, with sophistication in every paragraph and very realistic problems that need to be dealt with. I will definitely look forward to the next in the series.
K Evan Cole's Third Time's the Charm's a wonderful romance of two men trying to make a relationship work despite their busy schedules and many commitments.
Set in Boston, Luke and Finn have a memorable meet-que, as they meet under an awning in the rain. Seriously, it's just damn sweet. And the Boston setting is well written, allowing the reader to feel the charm of the city.
I love Luke and Finn. Instantly attracted to one another, what follows is a great story of two men living their lives while trying to work on their developing relationship. All realistic situations, they're faced with conflict as friends, family, and jobs all get in their way.
Luke's niece Ella is adorable, as she's well written and adds so damn much to the tale. A ten year old, her feelings definitely seem appropriate. Same with Luke, as raising Ella is his top priority, and no one wants to be involved with a man raising a child.
This tale is wonderfully realistic, as Finn wants to be able to handle Luke's priority being Ella, but it isn't quite as easy as he thinks. Their story's complex, with a whole lot of depth. Hot and passionate together, they want so badly to be together, but they can't avoid all the complications. At times, there's extreme amounts of hurt. I could feel the pain myself and my heat ached for these men.
Written in dual POV, the author does a good job of giving us the feeling of both Luke and Finn. The writing is great, but be warned that the pace is slow-ish.
Third Time's the Charm's a wonderful character driven book that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a sweet, slow burn romance. Definitely a tough read at times, it is well worth it.
Another great book by one of the best authors I've read this year. To me, Third Time's The Charm has it all: the charming MCs, very funny second characters (who I HOPE will get their own story, btw) and all those Star Wars and Marvel references <3 <3
What I really like about her books is the everyday life aspect of the stories. Finn and Luke first met on a Starbucks line and start to flirt without actually talking to each other, just stolen glances and smiles. They start to build a friendship, that evolves to feelings for both of them, in their own time, not rushing and falling on love on the seconf or third chapters. Both adults, with exigent jobs and demanding lives, and yet they work hard to find a way to make it all work. It's not all perfect, they have their share of hits and misses, and that's what kept me hooked until the very last line. The interactions between everyone around the couple was beautifully buited too: it's not just someone meeting their lover friends/familiy; they start a connection too, and we see that all throught the book that's another piece that helps Luke and Finn in the path to their much deserved HEA. In the end, Is all about second, third chances... as many as you need to be happy!
This book is emotional and a little angst, but is also funny and very captivating! I highly reccomend reading this with a nice cup of coffee... Makes it all better! 5+++ stars, for sure!
“Third Time’s the Charm” by K. Evan Coles is the first story in the ‘Boston Seasons’ series. This gay romance features a pair of men who take their responsibilities seriously to the exclusion of pursuing a personal relationship. Each of them has past history that makes them wary of believing in the possibility of a relationship. Finding a way past the wall each has built around his heart may be almost impossible, but neither man is a stranger to working for what he believes in…they just have to learn to believe in each other.
There are some characters who just leap off the page, and the beautiful connection between Luke and his niece definitely made this story touching. The corny cow jokes (and the pterodactyl one, lol) appealed to my wacky sense of humor and that deep bond in this family that reminds us of the sacrifices contributed by the families those connected with military service all made me forge a connection with these folks. I was immediately invested in the realism of this story and enjoyed watching the relationships play out. There is love, quirkiness, a bit of danger, and normal emotions of jealousy and insecurity, and of course, a wonderful happy-every-after…what more can one ask for? I hope there are more stories that feature these engaging characters and I will be looking for more tales from this talented author.
A copy of this story was provided to me for review
As a long-time fan of K Evan Coles' writing, I was thrilled when I heard she would be writing a series based in Boston. A native, she knows her way around the city. Her appreciation of the nuances of Boston’s diverse neighborhoods steep the story in a rich sense of place that make the reader feel dropped right into the city. As a transplanted Midwesterner who adopted Boston as home, I deeply appreciated Finn’s teasing Luke about the general crabbiness of New Englanders.
I loved the two main characters, individually and especially together. Their cute-almost-meet right at the top of the story drew me right in, but it wasn’t until they spoke to each other in their own unique flirty banter that my heart flipped along with theirs. This author is a master of the flirt, but even more, at exposing the insecure underbellies of the complex characters she writes, making us root for them right from the start. I loved the side characters who jump off the page, especially sweet Ella and her awful jokes. It’s never an easy journey for K’s characters, but it’s always worth the wild ride. There were times I loved Finn more than Luke, i.e.- Luke had some serious growing to do, but in the end, SPOILER SPOILER, Luke won my heart along with Finn's.
Two men with too busy lives, each occupied with jobs and family situations that sometimes get out of control. Two busy men, just like you and me, looking for that elusive someone to share a life with!
This story shows us real life situations. Men looking for someone to share life with. Men looking for that balance that would make life worthwhile. Men trying to cope with responsibilities at the same time looking for someone to share it with. It also shows us the doubts, insecurities, frailties that we each have especially when it comes to trusting another person with our heart and happiness. It tells us in realistic situations how each of the MCs try to cope with it. We can see our MCs’ struggle, think about things they want and how to go about letting the other person know how they feel. It is a very realistic tale of two people looking for “the one” amidst all the chaos in their lives.
Congratulations K. Evan Coles on a very relatable story. I just love the way you created Luke and Finn, they are so lovely and amazing in their humanity! Once again, you have shared with us a tale of two amazing characters who can be you and me!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I was torn about what to rate this but ultimately went with three stars. I liked this story but it just didn’t wow me. Luke and Finn were perfectly likable and I appreciate how they addressed issues like adults. The friendship circle was an interesting bunch. Both MCs had a BFF who was once a lover. The expanded circle included some dubious characters, including a coworker/friend of Mick’s who made it clear he didn’t care for Paul (Finn’s BFF and Mick’s husband). Then there’s Chad, who was just creepy and I didn’t trust him. Then there’s Ella. I could understand her situation but I just didn’t like her and felt she had way too much control over her uncle Luke’s life. I was disappointed that it took Luke and Finn almost the entire story before the “I love you’s” came out. Even with the mild drama surrounding the “third time” I would have expected it sooner. And since it came so late in the story, there wasn’t time to move them further along in their relationship; thus, no epilogue, which really could have helped cement a HEA with us readers instead of the tepid HFN we got.
Really liked this. Finn is charming and funny, Luke loves his friends and family, is kind hearted and also totally unaware of how gorgeous and desirable he is.
He and Finn fall in love and are perfect for each other. However, for them to be together they both need to overcome a number of obstacles life keeps throwing their way, pesky things like work and family demands. In fact, the latter was one thing that did annoy me, I did feel that Luke's family took advantage of his good nature somewhat.
Saying that, this is ultimately a beautifully written love story, with very little angst. There is some misunderstanding on both sides near the end of the book, but it was more of a hiccup, than a major fall out. Both guys sat down, like adults, discussed their problems and then attempted to work them out.
On the whole, it's a sweet feel good story which will make you smile. Good first book in a series. Highly recommended, if you don't want major drama in your books.
A story of two guys meeting in a coffee shop. Well, we've seen it before, right? Two guys trying to fit their new relationship into their busy lifes? Yup, been there. What we don't see often, and this book has it in spades, is two MCs struggling to build a lasting connection among a host of secondary characters, witty remarks, life's curve balls and complicated emotions, all described in a way that just pulls you in with every page with humor and heartfelt emotions you feel deep down :). I love the attention given to Luke's and Finn's emotions, insecurities and concerns. I absolutely loved the overall plot, real life struggles and all in between. I also totally love the secondary characters, one of whom will hopefully get his own story, full of sass and witty comments :) If you haven't guessed already, yes, I loved this book a lot :) No dragons, explosions and gun fights, but this story holds your emotions in a vise all the same :)
This is an excellent start to a new series and I love everything about this book. It is sweet, fun, sexy, emotional, entertaining, the storyline is great, there is a lovely family dynamic, a cute but opinionated kid, supportive friends and the characters are amazing. I love Finn and Luke together and their first and second meetings are as adorable as they are awkward. They have an instant attraction, a strong connection and their chemistry is off the charts. Trying to balance their extremely busy lives and a new relationship is difficult enough but add in Luke's niece Ella who lives with him while her father is deployed and finding time to be together is almost impossible. They have a few obstacles to deal with and their lack of communication about their feelings for each other does not make it easy. The ending is perfect, I love the secondary characters and I can't wait to read the next book in this wonderful new series.

Third Time’s the Charm by K. Evan Coles. This is Finn Thomason and Luke Ryan’s story.
Luke is providing day to day care for his brother’s daughter while he is fulfilling his military duty which doesn’t leave much time for a personal life.
Finn is new to Boston and works as a trauma surgeon so with being the new guy his schedule is crazy. He is getting over a bad relationship.
I loved Finn and Luke’s story and how they met. The chemistry was hot between them when they could finally work it out between their schedules. They really care for each other but neither one wants to get hurt plus between their jobs and Luke’s commitment to his niece will these two be able to take a chance on finding true love and happiness?
This was an entertaining story that I couldn’t put down. I look forward to the next books in this series.
FYI, contains mature content. This is a MM romance. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I loved this story! Luke and Finn were great. I loved how sweet their first meeting was. Finn sharing his umbrella with Luke after they both thought they had missed their chance at the coffee house. It wasn't easy for Luke and Finn to build their relationship. Both of them had crazy schedules, Finn was a doctor with a hectic schedule. Luke juggled work and helping to raise his 10 year old niece, Ella. Not only did they have to schedule their time together around work, but also how to help Ella understand that Luke finding love didn't mean she would lose him. While they struggle to get their happy ending, they finally find a way to mesh their lives together. I thought the characters were so well written and the story was so great! Can't wait to see what's next from K. Evan Coles.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is the story of two sexy single men meeting and trying to carve out a relationship around their busy, complicated lives. I'll admit, it took me a while to warm up to Finn. He let his friends' doubts drive his actions in his relationship with Luke too many times. That was very frustrating for me. Meanwhile, Luke was being the best brother and uncle on the planet and still bending over backward to try to keep Finn happy with him. (Luke also let his niece run over him at times, which didn't do either of them any favors.) Once I got a bit further in the story, I grew more attached to both Finn and Luke, and I knew they belonged together. Some of their conversations and actions made me sigh, because they were so caring toward each other. I felt really satisfied with the way things worked out, and I am glad I got to read this romance.
I loved this story. Luke is computer programmer who helps care for his niece Ella while her father is stationed elsewhere because her mother had left them. He meets Finn who's an ER doctor. They've both been hurt by previous partners. Luke especially has a difficult time maintaining a relationship because most of the men he's tried to date have a problem understanding that his niece Ella is so important to him. Both men have strange, conflicting schedules. Ella also has some difficulty with Finn because of her experiences. Eventually Finn begins to feel left out of Luke's life. Things take a turn for the worse. An unforseen situation forces Finn to realize how much he truly cares for Luke and just how much he's willing to do to stay together.
